Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester United
Manchester United won the Carling Cup yet again and they were probably the best side but Aston Villa also did played well, making it an exciting Cup Final. It was difficult to understand why Man Utd didn’t go down to ten men after last-man Nemanja Vidic conceded a penalty, maybe the referee thinks that particular Law of the Game is a bit silly but it’s still a law.
Michael Owen – who could have played for Wales if they’d changed the rules earlier - scored Man Utd’s equaliser after James Milner had put the penalty away. If Owen hadn’t gone off injured, maybe he could have scored another one but substitute Wayne Rooney certainly had a lot to do with Man Utd’s win and could have scored more than one.
Villa started to look tired late on with even the star centre back pairing of James Collins and Richard Dunne beginning to look shaky but Villa kept fighting until the end and James nearly got them an equaliser. Ryan Giggs didn’t play for Man Utd due to a broken arm.
