Preston North End v Doncaster Rovers
I really want Cardiff, Millwall and Middlesbrough to get promoted but if any team deserves it, it’s probably Preston, the longest-serving Championship club. All those times they’ve been in the play-offs and fallen either at the final hurdle or the penultimate one. But they’ll need to play better than last season. Doncaster probably surprised quite a few people by challenging for the play-offs before finishing a respectable mid-table. But can they do it again?
I might not be all that keen on his dad but I think I quite like Darren Ferguson. He rescued Craig Morgan from Peterborough United and brought him back to the Championship. I bet he’ll play him too. Paul Parry is back from his knee injury and should also play.
Derby County stole Gareth Roberts away from Doncaster pre-season but I’m Welsh, I love rams.
Doncaster still have Brian Stock despite interest from various clubs but they don’t have John Oster because he’s recovering from knee surgery.
Reading v Scunthorpe United
Reading took a while to recover from failing to get promoted and for a while it looked like they could be spending this season trying to win promotion from League One. But then they sorted it out and even made a late run for the play-offs.
Simon Church is expected to be in Reading’s starting line-up after his four pre-season goals. Hal Robson-Kanu could also start if Jimmy Kebe fails to recover from injury. Jake Taylor is looking promising too. He doesn’t seem to have played in goal yet but he can do all the other positions.
Leeds United v Derby County
Leeds finally managed to get back into the Championship but will they stay there? Probably. Maybe Derby will go for promotion, even though it didn’t work out so well last time they were up there.
Arsenal’s Sanchez Watt has returned to Leeds for a second loan spell and could play as all Leeds’ strikers are injured or at Everton.
Gareth Roberts picked up a knock in his last friendly for Derby but he’s expected to play. Robbie Savage hasn’t retired after all so he’s still Derby’s captain. And he’s a lovely man too, my friend said so.
