Dave Jones was delighted with Craig Bellamy’s debut – and so was Craig.
Everton manager David Moyes is jealous.
It's not just me who's talking about how good Craig was against Doncaster Rovers. Oh no. Far from it.
Cardiff’s chief executive Gethin Jenkins thinks the signing of Craig on loan was a great move financially. A sell-out match, increased interest in season tickets and over 1000 Bellamy shirts can only help.
Darcy Blake probably won’t be fit for Cardiff City’s Carling Cup match against Peterborough United.
Robbie Savage has been a naughty boy. He allowed his son to give betting tips on a gambling website and I have to say, I’m really not on Robbie’s side this time. True, it was predictions for Premier League games but still, it’s a bit naughty.
Andy King is happy to hear that Leicester City have money to buy new players – and they might just need it.
Leicester’s academy director Jon Rudkin thinks Andy sets a good example to the younger players.
Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan says he’s a big fan of Gary Speed – but he still wants him to lose his first match in charge of Sheffield United. And as Sheffield United are playing Middlesbrough, you can’t blame him for that.
Gary Speed says he is yet to be surprised by his first management job at Sheffield United.

Championship Results 21st August 2010 Part 3
Preston 1-0 Portsmouth
Preston had no points at all before this month but luckily they were playing Portsmouth so they were able to get three of them.
Craig Morgan helped Preston to get their first clean sheet but Paul Parry wasn’t in the squad after playing for Preston’s reserves the night before. Unfortunately they lost 1-0 to Accrington Stanley’s reserves although Paul nearly scored.
Reading 1-1 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest are still without a win but at least the fans know they can take their gilt-edged chances.
Robert Earnshaw had a good game for Forest and was the player to profit when Reading keeper Adam Federici (who otherwise had a good game) messed up a kick which rebounded from a team-mate before dropping nicely for Rob to score his first of the season.
Simon Church, Hal Robson-Kanu and Jake Taylor were all on the bench for Reading but their manager chose not to call on them and they didn’t win the game.
Forest were without Chris Gunter, who was suspended.

Championship Results 21st August 2010 Part 2
Crystal Palace 1-2 Ipswich Town
Ipswich continue their quest to make this season the opposite of last season – they’re yet to lose a match. Crystal Palace didn’t win but they are out of administration which is more important.
Andy Dorman played on the left for Palace and nearly scored a few times for Crystal Palace but he only got the ball in the net once and even then it didn’t count because it was offside. Lewis Price was on the bench.
Troy Brown was back on the bench for Ipswich after recovering from an ankle injury but he didn’t get to play this time.
Hull City 0-0 Watford
This wasn’t the best game in the world (though it had its moments) but both teams are (so far) doing better than expected after Watford struggled last season and Hull sold most of their best players.
Jonathan Bond was on the bench for Watford.
Leeds United 3-1 Millwall
Millwall did the double over Leeds last season before following them to the Championship. This season, Leeds took revenge – and got their first win of the season, while Millwall conceded their first goals. Millwall were the first to score when they took the lead through an own goal but Leeds got an equaliser before one of those annoying supersubs put Leeds into the lead late on. Then, when Millwall were pushing up for an equaliser, he got another goal. I don’t think I like him.
Sanchez Watt got the assist for Leeds’ second goal and could easily have scored too. He had a good game but what do you expect, he’s on loan from Arsenal.
Millwall’s best player was arguably another Wales-eligible forward, Steve Morison, who got the assist for Millwall.
Norwich City 2-0 Swansea City
I don’t mind seeing Swansea lose occasionally. I definitely don’t want them finishing ahead of Cardiff or anything like that. But I don’t want their Wales internationals losing confidence and today probably didn’t help. It looks like Norwich’s season could be similar to their last season. A shock defeat followed by Norwich going up and up and up… and then up in another sense.
Swansea aren’t in too much trouble yet – they’re on relegation form but they’re also mid-table. But if they carrying on playing like this, they won’t only be in trouble, they’ll be in League One next season and that would be a shame. If Cardiff do miss out on promotion again, beating Swansea twice next season should provide some small consolation but it won’t happen if they’re in League One.
Swansea did manage to keep the sheet clean for 87 minutes so they can’t have been completely awful and they could have gone ahead in the 83rd minute when they were awarded a penalty but David Cotterill’s shot was brilliantly saved. Then things got even worse. Ashley Williams cleared the ball in the wrong direction and it went into the back of the net. A winning goal for Norwich followed in the fourth minute of extra time.
Andrew Crofts played for Norwich and came close to scoring.
Neil Taylor made his Swansea debut as a half-time substitute and took lots of throw-ins, maybe he’s some sort of Welsh Rory Delap. There wasn’t any action for substitutes Joe Allen or David Cornell.

Championship Results 21st August 2010 Part 1
Bristol City 3-3 Barnsley
Bristol City doubled their points tally by drawing with Barnsley but with all their Welsh defenders out, of course they’re going to struggle. Barnsley will be disappointed with a draw after taking the lead not once but three times.
Gavin Williams made an 89th minute appearance for Bristol City. If they want to see how good he is, they really need to bring him on earlier. Christian Ribeiro didn’t make the bench despite reports that he might.
Burnley 3-0 Leicester City
Burnley are pushing for promotion as expected (if you can push to promotion when you’re only six points from the bottom of the table) but what has happened to Leicester? True they lost their manager but they got quite a good one to replace him. They were in the play-offs last year but if they don’t improve it could be the League One play-offs next season.
But you don’t want to concede a penalty against Burnley. I can’t find the exact statistics but his winning goal was something like the 73rd he’s converted in 78 attempts. Although I suppose that does mean he’s missed more than Gareth Southgate…
Andy King played the full match for Leicester. He probably should have scored but maybe it was harder than it looked.
Cardiff City 4-0 Doncaster Rovers
It was always going to happen wasn’t it? Craig Bellamy was one of the best in the Premier League last season. Now he must be the best in the Championship. I just feel bad for Jason Koumas. His move was brilliant for Cardiff and a bit of a step-down but Craig has put him in the shade. But Doncaster are still in the top half of the table and I don’t think losing to an inspired Cardiff is any reason to worry. They didn’t even play badly.
Craig Bellamy… what can I say? (Not even he knew what to say.) I’d welcome him at Arsenal with open arms but I’m thrilled to see him at Cardiff. I just hope he doesn’t retire for a very long time. True, a top class Premier League player is probably always going to look brilliant even when playing for a good Championship side but what a great signing – a great pair of signings, let’s not forget Jason – for a team who really looked up against it before the season began.
Craig got the assists for the first and third goal (so where was he when the second went in?) before finishing the performance with a deserved winning goal from a brilliant free kick. He left the field to a standing ovation but I’d like to think some of the applause was for Jason, who replaced him. Jason hasn’t played competitive football for several months and it looks as though he actually had an injury in the second half of last season, rather than just being ignored so it might take a while before he’s able to play a full match but once he’s ready, he’ll be able to show the Championship how good he is. And maybe he can show the Premier League how good he is at the same time because for one reason or another, I’m not sure they know.
When I first looked at the BBC Sport page, Darcy Blake was in the starting line-up and Adam Matthews was on the bench but when I looked later on, Adam was in the starting line-up and there was no sign of Darcy. I decided that either I was going mad or Darcy had suffered an injury in the warm-up and unluckily for Darcy it was the latter – he rolled his ankle. And luckily for Cardiff, they clearly hadn’t handed their team-sheet in so they were able to give Adam his place and get an extra squad member to sit on the bench (if the team-sheet had been handed in, Adam could still have been promoted to the starting line-up but they’d have to do with just the six substitutes).
Brian Stock played in midfield for Doncaster and nearly scored a couple. For both sides, the Welsh captain was the best player. But you can’t blame Brian for texting Craig and asking him to delay his move to Cardiff for another week!
Coventry City 2-1 Derby County
Coventry are joint-second after a win over Derby that was arguably deserved but looked far from easy.
Freddy Eastwood was unable to add to his two goals although he came close but he did get a yellow card for not retreating the required distance for a free kick which isn’t great and I don’t think he should do it again but at least it provides a bit of a contrast from the fouls players usually get them for.
Robbie Savage made his 500th appearance for Derby. He played a part in Derby’s (then) equaliser and also helped out defensively. He didn’t get a yellow card either although defender Gareth Roberts did. Before the match, Gareth said he hoped Derby would be up for the challenge and I’d say they were really but that won’t be much consolation.

Premier League Results 21st August 2010
Arsenal 6-0 Blackpool
Many have written off Blackpool (again) following their 6-0 defeat to Arsenal. But since when does losing 6-0 to Arsenal mean you’re a bad team? (And if Blackpool are bag, what hope do Wigan Athletic have?). True, Blackpool weren’t at their best but it’s difficult for any team to play well when they’re being thrashed and they only have ten men. (That shouldn’t have been a sending off. If it was in the penalty area, which is very debatable, it was a red card according to the rules but that lst man rule is stupid. It makes less sense than the offside rule and that’s saying something. The penalty was enough.)
Arsenal were excellent. One 6-0 win against a team who will probably still go down doesn’t necessarily mean this could be the season but it looks promising. If they carry on playing like this, Aaron Ramsey might struggle to get back into the team.
David Vaughan was the only Welshman to feature for Blackpool. He looked pretty good pre-thrashing and could have opened the scoring but Manuel Almunia made a good save. Neal Eardley and Rob Edwards stayed on the bench which can only be a good thing as far as Arsenal are concerned. Blackpool remain in the top half of the table.
This isn’t real but I enjoyed reading it all the same - despite the Arsenal result and the incorrect use of the word fulsome (the correct meaning isn’t impossible but it’s not in keeping with the tone of the rest of the article).
Birmingham City 2-1 Blackburn Rovers
No sign of second-season syndrome here as Birmingham beat Blackburn, who are expected to do fairly well.
But however they do, it looks as they won’t be a regular feature of this blog. Jason Brown was again omitted from the bench in favour of Mark Bunn.
Everton 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Everton played well and took the lead to the end of a promising first half but after that Wolves defended solidly – and attacked just about enough to win a share of the points and maintain their unbeaten record. They won’t be 5th at the end of the season but points like these can only help.
David Jones played the first 70 minutes for Wolves. Wayne Hennessey was on the bench. Dave Edwards was missing due to a groin injury.
Stoke City 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Stoke feel they should have drawn this game and the whole of the ball probably was over the line but Stoke probably did foul the keeper. It looked that way and they fouled pretty much everyone else.
I don’t usually like to see Tottenham win but there is something satisfying about watching Gareth Bale get the winning goal, something which has happened regularly during the past few months. This time last year, the words ‘Gareth Bale’ and ‘winning’ were only in the same sentence if you pointed out he hadn’t yet. Now Gareth is a winner and even the Tottenham fans can see it although some would sell him if £100 million was offered.
The first one looked lucky and painful but if Ryan Shawcross has to mess up a clearance like that, giving it to the Welsh player is probably the best thing he could have done.
The second goal wasn’t as funny but it was just as amazing in some ways – and considerably more amazing in others. A perfect, acrobatic, unstoppable left-foot volley, the type that makes me feel very glad Gareth is Welsh. The calls for Gareth to be picked for England haven’t entirely abated but those who know he’s Welsh tend to feel he’s better off out of the England team. I’m very glad his Welsh but I wish he played for Arsenal.
Playing alongside Ryan in Stoke’s defence was Danny Collins. It was a surprise to see him recalled – I wouldn’t have recalled him for the simple reason that I wouldn’t have dropped him – but he looked defensively solid and also made a few good attacking moves.
West Bromwich Albion 1-0 Sunderland
West Brom going to struggle? Sunderland pushing for a place in the top half of the table? One game can’t tell you much but West Brom looked like the team more likely to get a top-half finish.
But it’s not all good news. With Scott Carson keeping a clean sheet for west Brom, it doesn’t look very likely that Boaz Myhill will get a chance next week.
West Ham United 1-3 Bolton Wanderers
It’s been suggested that the bottom three will include at least one team whose name begins with W. West Brom looked like they were trying to avoid this but West Ham looked like a team in trouble. Bolton are now up to fourth after Johan Elmander found out where the goal net was. But unfortunately for him, he won’t be shooting into the same goal net next week.
Danny Gabbidon got the chance to start for Bolton and to be fair, he didn’t seem to do anything too badly wrong. It was the other defenders.
Sam Ricketts was on the bench for Bolton.

Scottish Premier League Fixtures 22nd August 2010
Celtic v St Mirren
Celtic will be joint top of the league if they win this match. St Mirren too are unbeaten but they haven’t actually won yet and Celtic Park isn’t the easiest place to get three points.
Joe Ledley should start for Celtic but St Mirren won’t have Andy Dorman because he plays for Crystal Palace now.
Hibernian v Rangers
Hibernain were in third place in the League – but now they face the Champions.
David Stephens will probably be on the bench for Hibernian.
Kilmarnock v Motherwell
Both teams are in search of their first point – and by the end of this match, neither team will be pointless.
Kyle Letheren will probably be on the bench as his new club Kilmarnock face his former club Motherwell.

Middlesbrough v Sheffield United
The title favourites are still searching for their first win but they’re facing one of the few sides that are below them in the table.
Danny Coyne will probably be on the bench for Middlesbrough. Rhys Williams is in Australia recovering from a pelvis injury.
Gary Speed takes charge of his first match as manager of Sheffield United. But will he start fellow Welshman Ched Evans?
