Gary Speed appointed Wales' new manager

To begin with, Gary Speed wasn't even interested. He'd only recently been appointed manager of Sheffield United although he'd been with the club for a number of years, first as a player and then as a coach.

But when Ryan Giggs yet again turned down the chance to become Wales' manager, the Welsh FA turned to an inexperienced manager whose club are near the bottom of the Championship.

A number of people are believed to have applied for the job. Brian Flynn, the caretaker-manager of Wales for their two most recent matches, was the choice of the players and was interested in remaining in the job. Chris Coleman and John Hartson were also thought to have been very keen. Chris was the most experienced Welsh candidate while John had none at all. Lars Lagerback was also interviewed for the position whilst other managers linked with the job included Martin O'Neill.

But it seemed FA Wales were looking for a star rather than an experienced manager and, after holding interviews, they made the decision to approach Gary Speed - and he accepted their offer to become manager of Wales.

It's true he's a Welsh legend and he could inspire the players, as no doubt Ryan Giggs would have done - and although his managerial track record is not particularly good, he does have experience as a coach. The younger Welsh internationals (which to be fair is most of them) will remember him as a star. He's just not that experienced or that successful as a manager and that could turn out to be a disadvantage.

I really hope it works out for Gary and he has my full support. I hope the unsuccessful candidates won't be too disappointed. Brian Flynn certainly has reason to be, although he clearly loves working with and developing young players and there will be more opportunities for him to do this at under-21 level and lower. Chris Coleman has also been offered another job but he'd decided not to accept it until he knew whether or not he's got the Welsh job. It looks like he'll be managing Greek side Larissa then.

As for Wales, we have a Welsh manager who loves his country. That's not something every country can claim.

Gary Speed's career in pictures.

Gary says he has taken a pay cut in order to manage Wales. It's always good finding people like that in the world of football.

Gary says one of his first jobs will be to try to coax Welsh players out of international retirement. That might actually be a harder job than beating England but some of those players could well be his friends so maybe he can do it.

Gary says Wales have nothing to lose. Well, we can lose the rest of the games which would also mean finishing bottom of the group but I do see what he means.

Former Wales manager Mark Hughes, who was linked with a return to the role, believes Gary will do a great job.

Premier League Fixtures 27th November 2010 (Part 1)

Aston Villa v Arsenal
Arsenal will be desperate to bounce back from two humiliating wins in their last two matches. Birmingham City did them a huge favour last weekend by beating Chelsea and while Arsenal spurned the chance to overtake them, at least it means Chelsea aren’t too far ahead. He’s not Welsh but former Arsenal star Robert Pires could start for Villa – who are unbeaten at home this season.
James Collins will return from a calf injury to play in defence for Aston Villa
Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has joined Nottingham Forest on loan until January, a move which has been welcomed by Wales caretaker manager Brian Flynn.

Bolton Wanderers v Blackpool

Blackpool’s impressive start to the season has got everyone’s attention but meanwhile Bolton have been sneaking quietly up the table and they are currently in fifth place.
Sam Ricketts will hope to keep his place in Bolton’s defence – and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t, given how well he’s done. But it’s not all the defence – Sam believes Johan Elmander is one of the most in-form players in the Premier League.
Neal Eardley and David Vaughan will probably start for Blackpool with Rob Edwards on the bench. Ian Holloway really wants David to remain at Blackpool but he doesn’t sound very hopeful.

Everton v West Bromwich Albion
West Brom’s six-match unbeaten run seems like a long time ago and they could be in the relegation zone on Saturday evening if results don’t go their way. But with Everton winning only three times this season (although they have only lost four in their last 25), maybe this is the time for West Brom to halt their slide down the table… and win their second away league match this season.
Boaz Myhill probably won’t start for West Brom.

Fulham v Birmingham City
Fulham are in trouble after losing to Manchester City in their last match. Now they must try to beat the team who’s just beaten the League Champions. Birmingham are however much weaker away from home – they’re yet to win away this season. The last time Birmingham beat Fulham at home, Robbie Savage scored. Even more incredibly, so did Emile Heskey.
Fulham are short of strikers as usual but they’ve been short of strikers for the last two years and that didn’t stop them from getting their highest finish ever and going all the way to the Europa League final. They do have a number of midfielders capable of scoring, including Simon Davies. Although if Roy Hodgson has his way, Simon might not be a Fulham player for very much longer.

Wales manager news 16th November 2010

Brian Flynn is hoping he’ll be able to stay in the role after becoming caretaker managers for the qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland (which didn't go quite as I'd hoped).

Brian, John Hartson, Ian Rush, Chris Coleman, Dean Saunders, Brian Kerr, Lawrie Sanchez, Lars Lagerback and Terry Venables are said to be on a shortlist of candidates to become manager of Wales. I really hope it’s one of the ones in bold. If any of the others have Welsh blood, if they have or have had eligibility to play for Wales, I’d be very happy for them to become manager of Wales. But I really want a manager who is part of the national identity of Wales. Someone who supports Wales.

Read more about the candidates.

FA Wales wanted Ryan Giggs but he doesn’t want the job just yet. Martin O’Neill is said to be their second choice (even though he’s not on the shortlist) but James Collins would have something to say about that if the champagne bottle rumours are true.

Ian Rush would love the job but he won’t say whether he’s applied or not.

Championship Fixtures 6th November 2010 (Part 2)

Doncaster Rovers v Millwall
Kenny Jackett celebrates his third anniversary of becoming Millwall’s manager. Or he’s hoping to celebrate.
Brian Stock and John Oster should both start to Doncaster.
Steve Morison should keep his place in Millwall’s starting line-up.

Middlesbrough v Crystal Palace
Danny Coyne he has had a calf injury and is a doubt.
Andy Dorman could keep his place in Palace’s starting line-up with Lewis Price on the bench.

Norwich City v Burnley

Andrew Crofts should start for Norwich.

Queen’s Park Rangers v Reading

Simon Church deserves to start after two recent winning goals as a substitute. If so, he could replace Hal Robson-Kanu but I hope they both start. Simon this week became probably the tenth Wales international to say he wants Brian Flynn to become the permanent Wales manager.
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11673_6482939,00.html

Sheffield United v Ipswich Town
Ched Evans will be hoping to start for Sheffield United, something he hasn’t done for over a month.
Troy Brown will probably be on the bench for Ipswich.

Watford v Nottingham Forest
Chris Gunter, who signed a new contract with Forest this week, should start. Robert Earnshaw could be the next to sign – he’s currently in contract talks. Rob has been on the bench recently after returning from a hamstring injury but he could start today.

Under-19 squad for UEFA qualifiers mini-tournament

Brian Flynn’s under-19 squad for the UEFA qualifiers mini-tournament in South Wales is as follows.

Goalkeepers: Jonathan Bond (Watford), Daniel Ward (Wrexham)
Defenders: Daniel Alfei (Swansea City), Tom Bender (Colchester United), Aaron Holloway (Bristol City), Max Penk (Wrexham), Joe Walsh (Swansea City), Adam Matthews (Cardiff City)
Midfielders: Billy Bodin (Swindon Town), Josh Dawkin (Norwich City), Kieron Freeman (Nottingham Forest), Reece Jones (AFC Wimbledon), Lee Lucas (Cardiff City), Jonathan Williams (Crystal Palace)
Strikers: Tom Bradshaw (Shrewsbury Town), Kayelden Brown (West Bromwich Albion), Elliott Chamberlain (Leicester City), Ibrahim Farah (Cardiff City)

Ibrahin Farah has been called up to replace Richard Peniket (Fulham), who withdrew from the original squad.

Fixtures:
20.11.10 – Wales v Turkey
22.10.10 – Wales v Iceland
25.10.10 – Wales v Kazakhstan

Championship Results 16th October 2010 (Part 2)

Derby County 3-0 Preston North End
Preston were unbeaten in their last three and are steadily improving but Derby were unbeaten in four and had improved even more.
Derby’s final goal, a penalty, was scored by Robbie Savage, in his 600th career appearance. He had a great game. I hope you were watching, Brian Flynn. Congratulations, Robbie, and Happy 26th Birthday for yesterday. Yes, that’s right, Brian, he’s only 26. Easily young enough to play for Wales. And Wales do need a good penalty taker…
Gareth Roberts has recovered from his calf injury but he was only on the bench for Derby.
Craig Morgan played the full match for Preston with Paul Parry coming off the bench in the 79th minute

Ipswich Town 1-2 Coventry City
Coventry are behind Ipswich only on goal difference after beating them at Portman Road for the first time since 1994.
Troy Brown was on the bench for Ipswich.
Coventry were without the injured Freddy Eastwood.

Leicester City 1-1 Hull City

Sven Goran-Eriksson didn’t help Leicester to the win they needed but at least he can say he’s unbeaten.
Andy King put Leicester ahead after just three minutes.

Middlesbrough 1-2 Leeds United
This result proved the final straw for Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan, who allegedly tore up his contract and walked out earlier today. He should know better at his age. Boro are now just two points above the relegation zone.
Danny Coyne was on the bench for Middlesbrough but maybe not for much longer.
Jason Brown played in goal for Leeds and I’d like to say he was brilliant but unfortunately Boro didn’t give him much to do.
Sanchez Watt got an assist for Leeds for the second consecutive game.

Portsmouth 3-2 Watford
Watford lost an away match for the first time this season as Portsmouth continued their rise up the Championship table. Watford were 2-1 ahead in the 69th minute but there were two more goals to come and unfortunately none of them were scored by Watford.
Jonathan Bond was on the bench for Watford.

Queen’s Park Rangers 0-0 Norwich City
Norwich are doing well but until this match, only one team had taken points off QPR at Loftus Road. And now it’s two – although they are still yet to concede a goal. Norwich could have grabbed all three when they were awarded a penalty but Wes Hoolahan, who has been excellent for Norwich this season, shot wide.
Only a last-ditch clearance from Andrew Crofts prevented QPR from getting all three points. Again.

Welsh Player News 15th October 2010

The Football Assiciation of Wales will hold a conference today to discuss who should take charga of their country next. Welshman Ian Rush, Chris Coleman and John Hartson are among Brian Flynn’s rivals. The new manager will be named by December 1st.

A Daily Post writer feels Brian Flynn got the tactics wrong against Bulgaria and Switzerland. I hate to say it but I think he’s got a point (unlike Wales). However I don’t agree that Wales had no chance of winning against Bulgaria and Switzerland. Northampton Town beat Liverpool after all.

Brian Flynn would like to become Wales’ permanent manager but he doesn’t think he needs to make any big changes to the side.

Gareth Bale and Ashley Williams believe Brian should be offered the Wales job.

Having all but giving up on his own wish to play for Wales again, Robbie Savage is now putting in a good word for Ryan Giggs.

Shaun MacDonald says he was proud to make his Wales debut against Switzerland. The Swansea City midfielder, now on loan at Yeovil Town, has made a record number of appearances for the Wales under-21s but hadn’t appeared for the senior squad until Tuesday. Yeovil manager Terry Skiverton was also delighted for him.

Darcy Blake was also very happy to make his Wales debut, particularly now Brian Flynn is the manager. Brian has played a big part in helping Darcy to progress from the under-17 side to the senior squad and Darcy hopes he’s offered the job of Wales manager permanently and he feels Wales will soon start to get the right results.

Christian Ribeiro's second international cap left him with mixed feelings.

Gareth Bale hopes Wales will beat England next year and believes it could happen. Me too, Gareth!

Danny Collins hopes to be in the squad to face England.

The return of Aaron Ramsey from injury could provide Wales with the boost they need to get one over on England.

The Daily Post North Wales looks at the difficulties of attending a Wales match. I don’t really see the problem of internationals always being held in South Wales, England matches are always held in Wembley and I’ve never heard people from the north of England complaining (well, not about Wembley anyway) but the article does make a very good point about how difficult it is for people with jobs and/or children to get to a Friday night match.
I don’t think the writer’s children will necessarily be put off supporting Wales though. I grew up in England but while I am more Arsenal than Cardiff City, I certainly don’t feel any love for the England team. If Theo Walcott scores a hat-trick against Wales I’ll be in a mood with him for weeks. Unless, of course, Aaron Ramsey scores four.

Switzerland v Wales News 12th October 2010

Goalkeepers: Jonathan Bond (Watford), David Cornell (Swansea City), Wayne Hennessey (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Boaz Myhill (West Bromwich Albion)
Defenders: Darcy Blake (Cardiff City), Danny Collins (Stoke City), James Collins (Aston Villa), Adam Matthews (Cardiff City), Craig Morgan (Preston), Christian Ribeiro (Bristol City), Neil Taylor (Swansea City), Rhoys Wiggins (AFC Bournemouth), Ashley Williams (Swansea City)
Midfielders: Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur), Andrew Crofts (Norwich City), Dave Edwards (Wolves), Andy King (Leicester), Shaun MacDonald (Yeovil Town, on loan from Swansea City), Jazz Richards (Swansea City), David Vaughan (Blackpool)
Forwards: Simon Church (Reading), Ryan Doble (Southampton), Steve Morison (Millwall)

No more injuries to report although Ashley Williams still seems to be a slight doubt with an ankle injury.

Various reports suggest the following players will start for Wales:
Wayne Hennessey
Darcy Blake, James Collins, Ashley Williams, Danny Collins
Dave Edwards, Andy King, Shaun MacDonald, David Vaughan, Gareth Bale
Steve Morison

Subs: Boaz Myhill, Adam Matthews, Craig Morgan, Andrew Crofts, Jazz Richards, Simon Church, Ryan Doble

Other squad members: Jonathan Bond, David Cornell, Christian Ribeiro, Neil Taylor,Rhoys Wiggins, Jazz Richards

Possible alternatives:
Craig Morgan to replace Ashley Williams if he’s not fit. If Ashley isn’t fit enough for the bench, Christian Ribeiro and Jazz Richards are options to cover the centre back positions.
Simon Church to take Steve Morison’s place up front with Steve dropping to the bench.

Happy Birthday to Brian Flynn, who is 55 today. I hope the Wales boys have a nice present in store for him this evening.

Brian Flynn says Darcy Blake will make his Wales debut tonight not just because the other right backs are suspended but because he deserves it – although Adam Matthews will be heartened to learn there’s not much between them in terms of ability. Christian Ribeiro might prefer not to read this article. He doesn’t get a mention at all although maybe Brian sees him more as a centre back cover..

Despite reports yesterday that Steve Morison would start up front for Wales, The Sun believes Steve will be dropped in favour of Simon Church. And the Sun are just so reliable. But that doesn't mean it isn't true.

Ashley Williams says the defeat to Bulgaria was one of the most disappointing results he has ever experienced as a player but Brian Flynn managed to cheer him up.

James Collins says that, as the most experienced member of Wales’ squad, he must lead by example on the pitch tonight.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe is delighted that Rhoys Wiggins has been called up into the full Wales squad. I wonder if he’d have been quite as thrilled if Bournemouth had a match tonight.

John Hartson is still hoping he might be appointed manager of Wales. I’m actually kind of hoping he doesn’t. His best chance of getting the job is if Wales lose and I really don’t want that to happen.

Ruud Gullit could be one of John's rivals for the position but only if he’s offered the job.

Switzerland v Wales News 11th October 2010

Goalkeepers: Jonathan Bond (Watford), David Cornell (Swansea City), Wayne Hennessey (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Boaz Myhill (West Bromwich Albion)
Defenders: Darcy Blake (Cardiff City), Danny Collins (Stoke City), James Collins (Aston Villa), Craig Morgan (Preston), Christian Ribeiro (Bristol City), Rhoys Wiggins (AFC Bournemouth), Ashley Williams (Swansea City), Adam Matthews (Cardiff City), Neil Taylor (Swansea City)
Midfielders: Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur), Dave Edwards (Wolves), Andy King (Leicester), Shaun MacDonald (Swansea City), Jazz Richards (Swansea City), David Vaughan (Blackpool)
Forwards: Simon Church (Reading), Ryan Doble (Southampton), Steve Morison (Millwall)

Injured: Neal Eardley (Blackpool, ankle), Danny Gabbidon (West Ham United, retired), Chris Gunter (Nottingham Forest, suspended), Sam Ricketts (Bolton Wanderers, suspended), Joe Allen (Swansea City, groin), Joe Ledley (Celtic, partner giving birth), Brian Stock (Doncaster Rovers, back), Robert Earnshaw (Nottingham Forest, hamstring), Ched Evans (Sheffield United, groin) Hal Robson-Kanu (Reading, hamstring)

The Wales players only need to look at a fixture list to get injured. At least, that’s how it seems. You could almost make a team out of the injured players. And let’s not forget Jack Collison, Aaron Ramsey, Craig Bellamy and probably Lewin Nyatanga, who would have been in the squad if they’ve been fit.

Ashley Williams has become the latest player to fall victim to the injury curse after turning his ankle during the defeat to Bulgaria but it looks like he will be fit to face Switzerland. Also, Gareth Bale and James Collins suffered slight strains during the match but they are okay now.

Craig Morgan is the player called up to replace Ashley just in case. I’m very happy for Craig as he’s done really well for Wales under John Toshack and was unlucky not to be called into the squad this time.

Ashley says Brian Flynn has kept the spirits of the Wales players high. It’s hard to imagine how but it’s good to know we have a manager who can work miracles. That could be very useful.

Brian Flynn says Gareth Bale will be their matchwinner which seems a bit unfair. Gareth is one of the best players but he doesn’t need that sort of pressure. If Wales win, Gareth will be a big part of it but he won’t be doing it on his own. Gareth is the third-youngest in the squad but also the third-most experienced.

Brian says he will play a more defensive side against Switzerland but luckily he doesn’t fancy the idea of playing 4-6-0 like Scotland did. Brian has been criticised for his defensive approach against Bulgaria but it’s good to know he has his limits.

Brian says he will pick a young squad against Switzerland. He doesn’t have much choice really but you can't underestimate the value of an experienced player or two.

Darcy Blake is expected to make his Wales debut at right back, in place of Chris Gunter, who was sent off in the match against Bulgaria. Second-choice right back Sam Ricketts is also suspended after picking up his second yellow card in the qualifiers.

David Vaughan says Wales will turn the corner. And I’m sure he’s right. They might not to it in time for tomorrow’s match but we can always hope.

Dave Edwards says the Wales players really want Brian to become their permanent manager.

Steve Morison says Wales will end their scoring drought. Steve is almost certain to start against Switzerland with Simon Church and Ryan Doble the only other options.

Sam Ricketts believes Wales can cause an upset against England. Well if Wales could only win two games in qualifying and I had to choose which two, I wouldn’t choose the games against Bulgaria, Switzerland or Montenegro.

Switzerland v Wales News 10th October 2010

So far, no-one else has dropped out. Anyone else worried that the players are all going to step off the plane and turn their ankles?

Where now for Wales? (I’m hoping it’ll be the World Cup…)

Brian Flynn says he wants Wales to beat Switzerland (and I should think so too, he is the manager) – but he wants to do it for Wales, not for himself.

Switzerland need the three points as much as Wales do – but still I won’t be supporting the Swiss to win. Against England, possibly. Against Wales, no.

James Collins says Wales’ chances of qualifying haven’t gone yet but they need a miracle. Preferably a ‘doing-the-double-over-England’ miracle but all miracles are welcome.

David Vaughan thinks Brian Flynn should become Wales’ permanent manager.
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,19692_6437407,00.html

England want to play against Wales in the Millenniun Stadium. So, it’s up to England, is it?

Robert Earnshaw thinks Ryan Giggs should be Wales’ new manager I'm sure Brian really appreciates the vote of confidence, Rob.

Switzerland v Wales News 10th October 2010

Goalkeepers: Jonathan Bond (Watford), David Cornell (Swansea City), Wayne Hennessey (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Boaz Myhill (West Bromwich Albion)
Defenders: Danny Collins (Stoke City), James Collins (Aston Villa), Christian Ribeiro (Bristol City), Ashley Williams (Swansea City), Adam Matthews (Cardiff City), Neil Taylor (Swansea City), Darcy Blake (Cardiff City), Rhoys Wiggins (AFC Bournemouth)
Midfielders: Joe Allen (Swansea City), Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur), Dave Edwards (Wolves), Andy King (Leicester), Shaun MacDonald (Yeovil Town, on loam from Swansea City), Jazz Richards (Swansea City), David Vaughan (Blackpool)
Forwards: Simon Church (Reading), Ryan Doble (Southampton), Ched Evans (Sheffield United), Steve Morison (Millwall)

Those of you who did more than glance briefly at the squad list might have noticed that there are a few players missing. And a few players added. It doesn’t look good but at the same time, it’s great to see all the new players coming into the Wales squad. Let’s hope they have a good experience, whatever the result. (Now if only the fans can have a good experience too.)

If Wales only get a point, qualification will look even more impossible. But at least they’ll be better than Spain. (We Welsh fans have to take enjoyment where we can find it.)

Joe Ledley has withdrawn from the squad as his partner Ruby is expecting their first child on Tuesday. And I can’t really argue with that but in a way it’s a shame fans weren’t made aware of it before. Maybe not all fans are like me but I prefer to have a bit of notice. Maybe not the full nine months Joe would have had but last week would have been good. But anyway, this only gives us more reason to win. Joe’s baby will be born in Scotland and will be eligible to represent that country if he wants to. It’s up to Wales to do all they can to ensure he doesn’t want to.

Chris Gunter and Sam Ricketts are both suspended, following Chris’ red card and Sam’s second yellow. Darcy Blake is expected to make a deserved Wales debut – Christian Ribeiro and Adam Matthews are also options for the right back position.

Wales wouldn’t be Wales without more injuries. Hal Robson-Kanu was only on the field for five minutes (or rather eight minutes plus stoppage time) but it was still long enough to injure his hamstring.

Brian Flynn has called up a few extra players to replace the injured, suspended and expecting. Left back Rhoys Wiggins of Bournemouth, who has had a great start to the season, was saying only last month that he would love to get into the Wales squad. Well, Rhoys – here you are. He will be joined in the squad by two Swansea Cuty players: Shaun MacDonald, captain of the Wales under-21s, currently on loan at Yeovil Town, and Jazz Richards, also an under-21 international.

Ashley Williams
hopes Wales will bounce back from their defeat to Bulgaria. Sam Ricketts believes they can do it. David Vaughan feels their qualification hopes could already be over.

Robbie Savage's desperation to play for Wales has reached new heights. Whilst interviewing Brian Flynn, Robbie heard the team would need new full backs and he immediately jumped in to offer his services. I think it's great to see him showing such enthusiasm for his country and I wouldn't say that all the other midfielders who have been called up to play for Wales have done better than Robbie this season.
I suppose it's possible that Brian wants to go with the players he's seen recently - all the midfielders involved have been part of either the senior or under-21 teams in the past few months. As Brian was only recently appointed manager of the Welsh national team and was formerly in charge of players eligible for the under-21 team, he would have had no reason to watch Robbie (although he'd have missed a treat if he had. Even when Robbie plays badly, which doesn't happen often, his hair still looks amazing).
Danny Collins and Rhoys Wiggins are the only members of the squad who haven't played for Wales recently and they have had more recent experience of playing full-back then Robbie. If it was in goal where they had the problem, I'm sure Brian would have been straight on the phone.

Ashley Williams will be the next player to end his international career with Wales. But don’t worry. It’s not that one. It’s the Airbus UK one who will soon be too old to play for the Wales under-23 semi-professional side. He's not as old as Michael Pearson though. (Michael was really born in 1988.)

Wales v Bulgaria News 8th October 2010

There's been only one withdrawal in the past 24 hours and luckily that's only me which shouldn't make any difference at all. Except that Wales always win when I go so it should be quite easy to pick out which matches I've attended and which I haven't. My Welsh blood is obviously in my heart but I wonder if my English blood is located in my thyroid, there must be some reason why it doesn't want me to go to Wales.

Way-ulls, Way-ulls, Way-ulls! Or Cym-ru, Cym-ru, Cym-ru! as I prefer to say, just out of awkwardness really.

Brian Flynn thinks Wales can win tonight.

Brian says there’s more to Wales than just Craig Bellamy.

In fact, Craig isn’t guaranteed to have a place in future squads – he’ll only be there if he is one of the best.

Ashley Williams speaks about learning the Welsh national anthem with the help of Owain Tudur Jones. Ashley says it’s the best anthem in the world and I agree. I can’t hear it without wanting to stand up really straight.

Brian Flynn felt Ashley was the ‘natural choice’ for the captain’s armband.

Ashley’s manager at Swansea City, Brendan Rogers, thinks Ashley should become Wales’ permanent captain. I’m not so sure, what if Craig Bellamy gets in a strop and retires? I think Wales can do without him but they're even better with him.

Ashley has asked Cardiff City and Swansea City players not to boo each other’s players – there’s only one team playing tonight and that’s Wales.

Gareth Bale thinks Wales will qualify for another tournament soon.

Brian Stock explains his reasons for withdrawing from the Wales squad. They’re quite reasonable really. It doesn’t take much to aggravate a bad back. He just hopes his withdrawal won’t discourage Brian Flynn – or whoever is managing Wales – from picking him in the future.

Very…interesting revelations concerning Brian Flynn and Chris Gunter. Though he probably doesn’t mean it literally!

Robbie Savage believes he will never play for Wales again and he’s trying to come to terms with that. I hope he’s wrong. I love his enthusiasm and maybe he would have been picked if he was in good form. He did brilliantly last season but most players spend a bit of time off-form and Robbie is unfortunate that his off-form time has coincided with two Wales matches. I would really like to see him play for Wales again.

Wales v Bulgaria/Switzerland v Wales Updates 5th October 2010

Danny Gabbidon has retired from international football. It’s true that he’s had a number of serious injury problems and understandable that he might prefer to concentrate on club football but I’m very disappointed, by both his retirement and the timing of his announcement. Brian Flynn isn’t happy and I don’t blame him. Danny ought to have announced his retirement either before the squad was announced or after he’d played in the match. Maybe one day he’ll feel able to reconsider. It would be great to see him have a good run in West Ham's team.

Neal Eardley, Brian Stock and Robert Earnshaw have all been ruled out of Wales’ qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland. Rob has missed the last few matches for Nottingham Forest with a hamstring injury so his withdrawal is not a surprise. Neal suffered a knee injury during Blackpool’s win against Liverpool (funny how the second half of that sentence goes some way towards making up for the first) while Brian’s back is playing up again.

Neil Taylor (Swansea City), Darcy Blake (Cardiff City), Andrew Crofts (Norwich City) and Ryan Doble (Southampton) have been called into the squad. I’m especially thrilled for Darcy, who has been one of Cardiff's best players (no disrespect to the others but I was particularly shocked by Darcy's omission from the original squad) while Andrew and Neil have done really well for their new clubs Norwich and Swansea. Ryan recently made a very brief Southampton debut but he’s obviously impressed at under-21 level.

Wales squad
Goalkeepers: Jonathan Bond (Watford), David Cornell (Swansea City), Wayne Hennessey (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Boaz Myhill (West Bromwich Albion)
Defenders: Darcy Blake (Cardiff City), Danny Collins (Stoke City), James Collins (Aston Villa), Chris Gunter (Nottingham Forest), Christian Ribeiro (Bristol City), Sam Ricketts (Bolton Wanderers), Neil Taylor (Swansea City), Ashley Williams (Swansea City)
Midfielders: Joe Allen (Swansea City), Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur), Andrew Crofts (Norwich City), Dave Edwards (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Andy King (Leicester City), Joe Ledley (Celtic), David Vaughan (Blackpool)
Forwards: Simon Church (Reading), Ryan Doble (Southampton), Ched Evans (Sheff Utd), Steve Morison (Millwall), Hal Robson-Kanu (Reading).

Hal Robson-Kanu could be a doubt after missing Reading’s weekend match but I haven’t heard anything about him being a doubt so maybe he’s okay now.

Danny Collins is happy to be back with Wales. He explains what went wrong between him and John Toshack.

Chris Gunter believes Brian Flynn is the answer to Wales’ problems.

Gareth Bale is also very happy with his new manager.

It might sound strange but Craig Bellamy’s health is even more important than Wales' qualifying. I’m not happy that Craig wasn’t allowed to play for Wales but then he plays for Cardiff but I don’t blame Craig for that. It’s a strange situation, a player’s being withdrawn from contention for their country but then playing for their club before their country’s match was due to take place but it’s not a situation for which we can really blame the player. But the manager? That's a different matter. Maybe the Wales fans should have been given more of an explanation for Craig's absence.

Simon Davies has spoken about his retirement from international football and the seriousness of his foot injury.

Wales squad v Bulgaria and Switzerland announced

Brian Flynn has named the Wales squad for the matches against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
Goalkeepers: Jonathan Bond (Watford), David Cornell (Swansea), Wayne Hennessey (Wolves), Boaz Myhill (West Brom)
Defenders: Danny Collins (Stoke), James Collins (Aston Villa), Neal Eardley (Blackpool), Danny Gabbidon (West Ham), Chris Gunter (Nottm Forest), Christian Ribeiro (Bristol City), Sam Ricketts (Bolton), Ashley Williams (Swansea)
Midfielders: Joe Allen (Swansea), Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Dave Edwards (Wolves), Andy King (Leicester), Joe Ledley (Celtic), Brian Stock (Doncaster), David Vaughan (Blackpool)
Forwards: Simon Church (Reading), Robert Earnshaw (Nottm Forest), Ched Evans (Sheff Utd), Steve Morison (Millwall), Hal Robson-Kanu (Reading).

Goalkeepers
Jonathan Bond could make his full debut for Wales although he does have competition from three other goalkeepers. None of them, however, are first choice at their clubs. David Cornell has previously been called up by Wales but he hasn’t been in a matchday squad.

Goalkeeper Jason Brown (Leeds United, on loan from Blackburn Rovers) hasn't been selected, perhaps because he hasn't played first-team football this season although ironically it is rumoured that he will start for Leeds tomorrow.

Defenders
Danny Collins returns to the Wales squad for the first time since falling out with John Toshack.

Christian Ribeiro could make his competitive debut for Wales. He was surprised to be called into the full Wales squad. But I don’t think he minds.

Ashley Williams is the favourite to be Wales’ captain against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Darcy Blake was hoping to be part of the squad after some excellent performances for Cardiff so he’ll be disappointed he wasn’t selected.

Craig Morgan (Preston North End) has done well for Wales in recent matches but he has been omitted from the squad. Defender Lewin Nyatanga (Bristol City) has a knee injury.

Midfielders
Gareth Bale is named as a midfielder after some outstanding performances for Tottenham on the left wing. This means right backs Chris Gunter and Sam Ricketts are likely to play in the full back positions.

Simon Davies wasn’t recalled to the squad despite reports that Brian Flynn went to watch him playing for Fulham. Simon has now ruled out a return to international football.

Robbie Savage wasn’t recalled to the squad after recently coming out of retirement. It is possible he will be involved in future squads.

Ryan Giggs was also linked with a return to international football but he has a hamstring injury so it’s hard to know if there was any truth in this or not. I think probably not. Ryan has also ruled himself out of managing Wales until he retires from playing.

Andy Dorman (Crystal Palace) and Andrew Crofts (Norwich City) have both said recently that they are passionate about playing for Wales so they’ll be disappointed by their omission from the squad. Andrew in particular is a surprise as he has had an exceptionally good start to the season.

David Cotterill is another who has done well this season for Wales and Swansea City but he has a groin injury. Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) and Jack Collison (West Ham United) are out with long-term leg and knee injuries.

Forwards
Robert Earnshaw has been selected despite a thigh injury that has seen him miss three matches for Nottingham Forest recently.

Steve Morison and under-21 international Hal Robson-Kanu could make their competitive debuts for Wales.
Steve says he’s not worried about playing for new Wales manager Brian Flynn. He says he didn’t even know what he looked like until this week but he does now so there should be no embarrassing moments in the hotel. It is thought that Brian could favour former under-21 strikers Simon Church and Ched Evans but Steve feels he’s in better form than the other Wales strikers.

Craig Bellamy hasn’t been selected due to his recent knee problems on the advice of Cardiff City manager Dave Jones.

Wales v Bulgaria/Switzerland v Wales News 29th September 2010

Brian Flynn will announce his squad to face Bulgaria and Switzerland on Friday 1st October.

Doubts
Robert Earnshaw (hamstring) is a doubt for Wales’ next two matches. Sam Vokes, currently on loan at Bristol City from Wolverhampton Wandererers, has a hamstring injury and is yet to return to Bristol City’s squad.
It has been speculated that Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp doesn’t want Gareth Bale to play in the qualifiers as he needs a rest but this is just speculation.

Out
Craig Bellamy has been ruled out of Wales’ Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
Jack Collison (knee) and Aaron Ramsey (leg) will definitely be missing.

Possible Call-ups

Tony Pulis believes Danny Collins will be called back into the Wales squad now Brian Flynn has taken over from John Toshack. Danny has done very well the last few seasons and thoroughly deserves a call-up and he’s even said he’s like to play for Wales again but he’s one of quite a few players to have had issues with Tosh.
Brian spoke to Danny when he visited Stoke’s training ground and asked if he’d retired from international football. Danny said he hasn’t.
Robbie Savage has declared himself available for international games again following Tosh’s ‘resignation’. However the midfielder, who also presents radio show 606, will be 36 next month.
Simon Davies announced his retirement from international football. However, it is thought that he has since been in touch with Brian Flynn, who has recently watched him playing for Fulham.
Vital Reading say that Hal Robson-Kanu has been called up to the full Wales squad. It would be a deserved call-up after Hal’s excellent form for Reading and the Wales under-21s but to my knowledge the squad hasn’t been announced yet.
It is thought that Jason Koumas could also return to international football but the Wigan Athletic player, now on loan at Cardiff City, says he is currently focused only on building up his match fitness.
Darcy Blake is hoping to be called up to the full Wales squad again after having to withdraw from the previous squad. His excellent form for Cardiff suggests this is a real possibility. Wales have few central defensive options, as well as being light in midfield, and Darcy can play both roles.

Wales v Bulgaria News 28th September

It is looking increasingly likely that Wales will have to face Bulgaria and Switzerland without Craig Bellamy. It’s his knee again. Cardiff are working to build him up to full fitness but they don’t think he’ll be ready for Wales.

Millwall manager and former Welsh international Kenny Jackett believes Brian Flynn should become the permanent manager of Wales.

The Mirror thinks Terry Venables could be the next manager of Wales.

FA Wales have not yet advertised the job of national team manager so any rumours are probably without foundation.

Premier League Results 18th September 2010 Part 2

Sunderland 1-1 Arsenal
I still love you, Arsenal, and I still think you’ll win the League. But the only good thing about this game is that Sunderland’s goalscorer is an an Arsenal supporter. The referee, on the other hand, clearly wasn’t.
Aaron Ramsey didn’t play due to a broken leg. As this was an away match, let’s hope he was spared the agony of watching. He’s suffered enough agony.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolves started well and took the lead and although Tottenham played well, the equaliser just would not come. The excellent Gareth Bale sent over cross over cross but not only were the opposition mostly unable to deal with him, neither were his team-mates.
The equaliser eventually came from a penalty, an incident which (if you’ll forgive the pun) spurred on two of the substitutes.
David Jones was back in the starting line-up for Wolves and, as usual, did more than enough to make me hope Brian Flynn knows about his eligibility for Wales. Dave Edwards came off the bench after 58 minutes and nearlt got Wolves another goal. Wayne Hennessey was on the bench.

West Bromwich Albion 3-1 Birmingham City
West Brom brought Birmingham’s unbeaten start to the season to an end, with three second-half goals to cancel out Birmingham’s first-half opener.
Boaz Myhill was on the bench for West Brom.

Premier League Results 18th September 2010 Part 1

Aston Villa 1-1 Bolton Wanderers
Bolton can be more difficult to play against away than at home because of their tendency to park the bus. Aston Villa were unable to beat Bolton on this occasion but that wasn’t because of any bus-parking – they were surprisingly easy on the eye but still too much for Villa, who are still getting used to life without James Milner.
James Collins played the full match for Aston Villa. Most reports say he should have conceded a penalty for handball
Sam Ricketts was on the bench for Bolton, despite the suspension of Gary Cahill. Luckily for Sam, Andy O’Brien went off injured in the 18th minute and Sam was given his chance. BBC Sport said the change seemed to galvanise Bolton – and I find that very easy to believe.

Blackburn Rovers 1-1 Fulham
Fulham remained unbeaten after managing a good draw at Ewood Park. With Blackburn strong at home and Fulham known for their away struggles – and the team still adapting to the loss of Bobby Zamora – Mark Hughes is happy with the result. Although a win would have been even better.
Simon Davies had a good match for Fulham. Brian Flynn was said to be watching this match with a view to calling Simon up to the Wales squad despite his recent retirement. The signs are positive.

Stoke City 1-1 West Ham United
West Ham got their first point of the season at the Britannia Stadium, a venue where many bigger clubs have struggled.
It was a mixed day for Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross. He made the foul which led to West Ham’s goal and got away with handball and elbowing Carlton Cole in the head. But he was also struck on the head by the ball, so providing Scott Parker with the assist for West Ham’s goal. I'm not sure if it was the back of his head or his face. I thought it was the back of his head but reports differ and Ryan was probably too groggy to remember where it hit him.
Danny Collins wasn’t as naughty as Ryan but unlike Ryan, he got a yellow card.
Danny Gabbidon was back in the starting line-up for West Ham.

Wales International News 18th September 2010

We’ve known about this for ages but Brian Flynn is now officially Wales’ manager for the next two matches. And only fifteen years after he should have been given the job. Brian would like to be offered the job 'permanently' after the qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

If Brian doesn’t hang onto the job, Wrexham manager Dean Saunders is waiting in the wings.

Brian Flynn suggests that Craig Bellamy won’t necessarily be Wales’ captain anymore – but he is very important to Wales. Joe Ledley and Ashley Williams are possibilities for the armband.

Brian Flynn doesn’t want his players to be too cautious against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Aaron Ramsey has vowed to play his very best for Wales when he returns from injury.

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones feels he should have withdrawn Craig Bellamy from Wales’ match against Montenegro. Craig has missed Cardiff’s last two matches with his recurring knee problems.

Brian Flynn has admitted defeat in his mission to persuade Ryan Giggs to play for Wales again. Blame Ryan’s manager, not Ryan. But he is off to Blackburn Rovers today to see Fulham’s Simon Davies. He’s not interested in any of the other retired players though although they can call him if they’re interested in returning for Wales. I can kind of see why he doesn’t want to phone them all as there are loads of them but I can’t blame any players who feel it’s not quite right to go ringing the national team manager and asking to be put in the team.
Of the younger players, Adam Matthews is thought to be in line for a promotion to the senior Wales squad. Chris Gunter and Sam Ricketts currently play in his right back position but one of them will play left back if Gareth Bale is pushed forwards into midfield. Adam has also played in central midfield for Cardiff, an area in which Wales are quite week.

Rotherham United midfielder Mark Bradley is delighted by the news that Brian Flynn is interested in managing Wales permanently. Mark thinks Brian likes him so he fancies his chances of playing in the full Wales squad.
