Welsh Summer Transfers 2010 (Premier League,W)

West Bromwich Albion
West Brom paid £1.5 million to sign goalkeeper Boaz Myhill from financially-troubled Hull City on a three-year contract. For now he is the back-up goalkeeper but Bo has plans to change that.
Kayleden Brown was sent to Tranmere Rovers one a one-month loan deal.

West Ham United
Danny Gabbidon was rumoured to have attracted the attention of Blackpool but they must have been wary of his injury problems as no move was made as far as I know.
West Ham wanted Joe Ledley just like pretty much every other club but he went to Celtic instead.

Wigan Athletic
It was reported that Jason Koumas had been released by Wigan but that can’t be true as he has now joined Cardiff City on a season-long loan from Wigan.

Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wayne Hennessey attracted the attention of Liverpool and Burnley (one club apparently made a £2 million bid) and he was rumoured to be on his way to both but instead he signed a new five-year ontract with Wolves. They rewarded him by giving his No. 1 shirt to Marcus Hahnemann.
David Jones was coming to the end of a contract and he still hasn’t signed a new one but I think his current one has a while to run yet. Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United were all said to be interested in signing him.
Sam Vokes was linked with the exit door and with loan moves with Crystal Palace said to be interested. But Sam signed a new contract with Wolves and Mick McCarthy said he wasn’t going anywhere and there had been no interest in taking him on loan. Hours later, it was announced that Sam would play on loan at Bristol City until January 5th.
Jake Cassidy joined Wolves on a two-year deal this close season. He was at Llandudno Junction a short time ago, then he signed for Airbus UK but he left for Wolves without having played a competitive fixture.
And let’s not forget Joe Ledley – Wolves wanted him too. But he didn’t fancy England and went to Celtic instead.

Premier League Fixtures 21st August 2010 Part 1

Arsenal v Blackpool
A team under pressure take on a team who just want to enjoy the Premier League while they’re in it. The team under pressure should still win but I can’t help feeling a little bit worried. Blackpool demolished Wigan Athletic last week and Wigan beat Arsenal the last time they played… But the last time Blackpool beat Arsenal, Arsene Wenger was about eight years old.
Arsenal’s leading goalscorer is Pepe Reina. Not something they would have expected, even if Liverpool had accepted Arsenal’s bid for him. Hopefully we’ll have a new top goalscorer by tomorrow.
Aaron Ramsey won’t play for Arsenal again until November.
David Vaughan is likely to be in Blackpool’s starting line-up with Neal Eardley and Rob Edwards on the bench at least.

Birmingham City v Blackburn Rovers
Both teams finished in the top half of the season. In both cases it was a bit of a surprise, with Birmingham newly promoted and Blackburn looking like they were in relegation trouble at one stage. This could go either way – not least as the referee is younger than Stuart ‘Ghost Goal’ Attwell. Scary thought.
Jason Brown was Blackburn’s second-choice goalkeeper last season but he wasn’t on the bench last week so maybe he’s been overtaken in the pecking order.

Everton v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Everton often have a slow start to the season before going on a great run and getting into Europe. This could be great news for Wolves, who are expected to struggle again next season and need all the points they can get.
Wolves’ Dave Edwards is out with a groin injury and teenager Jake Cassidy is unlikely to play any part in Wolves’ Premier League campaign but David Jones should start after his wonder goal last week and Wayne Hennessey will be on the bench.

Stoke City v Tottenham Hotspur
Stoke are famed for their good home form (and, of course for their throw-ins) and they’ll need to maintain it if they hope for another improved finish this season. So they probably aren’t looking forward to a visit from Tottenham – although if they play as they did against Young Boys in the Champions’ League qualifier, Stoke are in with a chance.
Ryan Shawcross will be Stoke City’s captain again but Danny Collins will probably be on the bench.
Tottenham have huge problems up front after the poor darlings couldn’t cope with that nasty plastic pitch in the Champions’ League. So they’ll be grateful for the presence of Gareth Bale, a potent attacking threat even when he plays in defence.

Welsh Player News 18th August Premier League

I’m not overly fond of Mick McCarthy as a rule but we do seem to feel similarly about Welsh players. He already has Wayne Hennessey, Dave Edwards, Sam Vokes and Wales-eligible David Jones at Wolverhampton Wanderers but he has now signed 17 year old striker Jake Cassidy from Airbus UK. He might not be in the first team for a while but like Sam he’s one for the future.
