Welsh Player News 21st August (Championship)

Robbie Savage thinks Craig Bellamy won’t have an entirely easy time of it in the Championship. It’s demanding, it’s physical and Craig is used to playing with much better players.

Fulham manager Mark Hughes is disappointed to miss out on signing Craig Bellamy but he respects his fellow Welshman’s decision to play for his hometown club.

Craig might upset people everywhere he goes but his heart’s in the right place.

Craig’s new team-mate Michael Chopra believes Craig will have an immediate impact on Cardiff City. I heard he also made an impact on John Arne Riise but let’s forget about that.

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones thinks those who have criticised Craig’s move to Cardiff are just jealous.

Vital Norwich City have profiled new signing Andrew Crofts.

Swindon Town’s assistant manager Peter Shirtliff says he doesn’t know where the rumours about Norwich City's Owain Tudur Jones rumours have come from.

Former Swansea City midfielder Matty Collins seems to have signed for Welsh Premier League side Haverfordwest.

Welsh Player News (and rumours) 16th August (Championship)

Millwall’s Steve Morison is named in footballeague.co.uk’s Championship Team of the Week.

Christian Ribeiro wasn’t able to play for Bristol City in their draw with Doncaster Rovers due to a back injury but he’s on the way, er, back and is expected to feature for Bristol City’s reserve team in a friendly with Cheltenham Town.

Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra wants to score 30 goals this season – and he hopes Jason Koumas will help him.

Robbie Savage
is in the unenviable position of being caught between two friends who hate each other.

Brian Stock is enjoying life at Doncaster Rovers and is hoping for a new contract. His current one runs out at the end of the season.

Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan says it wasn’t easy leaving Danny Coyne out of Middlesbrough’s team to face Leicester City. But Danny played his part anyway – Strachan says Jason Steele’s good performance in goal was partly because of support from Danny.

Gary Speed is expected to become manager of Sheffield United after Kevin Blackwell was sacked. Robbie Savage thinks he’ll do well.

Robbie Savage is thinking of quitting Twitter after some ignorant twats made horrible posts about his seriously ill father. Don’t quit, Robbie. Not over some bunch of wankers.

Steve Morison hopes he can repay Millwall manager Kenny Jackett for showing faith in him. He says he’s never lost at Wembley so let’s hope he plays for Wales when we face England there.

Steve’s international manager John Toshack was delighted with his performance against Luxembourg.

Norwich City midfielder Andrew Surman has a very high opinion of fellow new signing Andrew Crofts. Andrew hasn't returned the favour yet.

Plymouth Argyle have decided not to sign Norwich midfielder Owain Tudur Jones after managing to get a Tottenham midfielder on loan.

Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwall was expecting great things of Ched Evans and he hasn’t necessarily changed his mind now he (Blackwall) s been sacked/let go by mutual consent.

Matty Collins has left Swansea City by mutual consent and his looking for a club that can give him some first-team football. Poor Matty was a while ago in the horrible situation of having a wag who was more famous than him. To make matters worse, she was famous for being on Big Brother. Oh, the humiliation.

David Cotterill knew he had to grab his chance after being a late call-up to the Wales squad so he was thrilled to score. John Toshack has challenged him to fulfull his potential and become a Wales regular.

Welsh Player news (Championship) Part 2

Hull City are said to be making a move for Millwall’s Steve Morison. Steve scored Millwall’s goal when they lost 2-1 to his former side Stevenage.

Norwich City’a Academy boss Ricky Martin is delighted that Josh Dawkin is a standby for the Wales under-21 team.

Swansea City manager Brian McDermott wasn’t exactly thrilled when his team were trailing 1-0 at half-time. Luckily Hal Robson-Kanu managed to help out with a goal

Brian McDermott thinks Jake Taylor could end up like Nicky Shorey but I kind of hope he’ll be better than that.

Ched Evans got the only goal as his team Sheffield United beat Notts County 1-0 away.

Joe Allen is a doubt for Swansea’s first game of the season as he is recvering from a shoulder operation.

Matty Collins has been on trial at Wycombe Wanderers but manager Gary Waddock has decided not to sign him. Matty played for Wycombe at the weekend when they beat Hayes & Yeading 3-1. That’s not a bad result you know when you’re playing against two teams. Matty is going back to Swansea though so it looks like he hasn’t been released.

David Cotterill scored for Swansea as hey beat Haaglandia 4-1 away.

Goalkeeper Jonathan Bond has signed a three-year professional contract with Watford.

Wales Player News 19th May (Championship)

Australia manager Pim Verbeek have criticised Middlesbrough’s decision to force Rhys Williams to play through a pelvis injury. Rhys is having treatment on the injury, which could cause him to miss out on playing for Australia in the World Cup. Isn't that what I said would happen? Sometimes it's horrible being right. I've dreamed of seeing a former Wales under-21 player at the World Cup. Of course, in my dreams he didn't play for Australia but you have to be willing to compromise in football.

Preston North End manager Darren Ferguson would like to buy centre back Craig Morgan from his old club, Peterborough United. Preston are however in financial difficulties so they probably won’t be able to afford him. Ferguson says Paul Parry is unlikely to be fit in time for the start of the 2010-11 season. Paul injured his knee in December and hasn’t played since.

Yeovil Town manager Terry Skiverton thinks that Shaun MacDonald, who had two loan spells with his club this season, has a big future. Unfortunately, Skiverton seems to feel Shaun’s future is with Swansea City rather than Yeovil. Shaun is currently in contract talks with Swansea.

Swansea City midfielder Matty Collins had a trial with Bristol Rovers in April which I didn't know about. No news on whether that came to anything.

Swansea City’s Kerry Morgan spent time this season on loan at Newport County, helping them into the Blue Square Premier. Manager Dean Holdsworth wouldn’t mind having him back.

Former Coventry manager Chris Coleman has been linked with Swansea City. For the moment, Swansea still have a manager, Paolo Sousa but that might not be the case for long.

Jonathan North is set to be released by Watford after not playing this season. He’s played for Oxford City on loan but the 19 year old goalkeeper hasn’t played for Watford this season.

Championship Results 16th February Part 2

Nottingham Forest 1-0 Sheffield United
Robert Earnshaw’s fourth-minute goal wasn’t just the winning goal. It was also the striker’s 150th league goal. Congratulations to Rob and I hope he got lots of big applause when he was substituted late on. Chris Gunter showed he’s an attacking threat as well as a good defender – and hopefully this is the start of another run of clean sheets for the right back. Sheffield United’s Ched Evans came off the bench after 78 minutes.

Peterborough United 3-1 Ipswich Town
If Peterborough can survive, that would really be something but you can’t say they’re not going the right way about it. Another win – and it was against the team they want to send into the bottom three in their place. The winning goal was a powerful header from Craig Morgan.

Plymouth Argyle 1-1 Swansea City
You know, maybe Plymouth will escape too. Okay the chances of them both escaping doesn’t look very likely at all but there’s nothing like a great escape in football. Fulham did it, Brighton did it (one of my first football memories), it does happen.
Carl Fletcher had a starring role in the best moment of the match, where the unpopular referee got a ball in the face and Carl called for a replacement. And his football was at least equal to his wit – it was another solid performance in central defence.
Ashley Richards made a surprise start for Swansea – his first I believe although it seems I must now call him Jazz Richards which will make things easier given that Swansea have another Ashley in the squad.
Ashley Williams was the only other Welshman in the starting line-up. Joe Allen was a late substitute but David Cotterill, who scored yet another spectacular goal for Swansea in their last match, was left on the bench alongside substitute keeper David Cornell. I really don’t understand Paolo Sousa’s selection methods but let’s look at the positives, maybe David Cornell will get a start soon.
David, Daniel Alfei, Joe Walsh, Matty Collins and Chad Bond all played as Swansea Reserves beat Bristol City Reserves 2-1.

Welsh Non-Keague/Reserves news

Aaron Morris, on loan from Cardiff City, was in Newport County’s team as they drew 0-0 with Blue Square Premier side York City in the FA Trophy. Kevin Gall and Danny Parslow were in York’s team. The replay is on Tuesday.

Troy Brown played for Ipswich Town’s reserve side as they drew 1-1 with Southend United reserves.
Ben Thatcher played 45 minutes for Ipswich and Roy Keane says he is progressing well as he recovers from a knee ligament injury.

Swansea City’s reserves lost 2-1 to Llanelli. Their side included David Cornell (goalkeeper), Daniel Alfei, Kristian O’Leary, Daniel Sheehan, Matty Collins (captain), Scott Evans and Chad Bond. Rhys Wilson (goalkeeper), Casey Thomas, Lee Lucas and Joe Walsh were among those on the substitutes’ bench.

Wales News

Southampton Reserves 3-0 Swansea City
Kayne McLaggon got an assist as Southampton thrashed Swansea. Ryan Doble replaced Kayne after 70 minutes with Garyn Preen coming off the bench fifteen minutes later.
However Swansea’s Welsh players had a lot less to be happy about. David Cornell played in goal Ashley Richards, Daniel Sheehan, Matty Collins, Scott Evans (replaced by Casey Thomas after 73 minutes) and Chad Bond also played with Daniel Alfei coming on after 73 minutes. Lee Lucas stayed on the bench. (At least, I think all these players played. I only saw their surnames so some of them could be other people.)

Swansea.Cardiff News 10th December

Swansea City beat Hereford 3-1 in a reserve match (and the match report found its way onto Google News where I could find it). David Cornell, Daniel Sheehan, Matty Collins, Scott Evans, Casey Thomas and Chad Bond. Daniel Alfei came on as a substitute.

Joe Ledley has found he needs surgery on both his hips, not just the one as he thought. He could be out for eight months. He’s agreed to play on for the rest of the year (luckily for him it’s December) but he understandably wants the operation sooner rather than later. He’s expected to play on Sunday.
