Southampton v Plymouth Argyle
Southampton are the favourites to win the League but I don’t think anyone’s expecting Plymouth to bounce back at the first attempt.
Southampton have released Lloyd James but Anthony Pulis and Ryan Doble are still at the club. Anthony was expected to be out for months following a shoulder injury but then he played for Southampton again about ten days later so he’s presumably fine. And maybe Ryan will become more of a regular in the matchday squad this season.
Carl Fletcher is probably still Plymouth’s captain so he should play. Owain Tudur Jones is on trial at Plymouth but I’m not sure about the rules on trials. You don’t need to know that sort of thing for Level One coaching unfortunately.
Carlisle Unted v Brentford
Carlisle and Brentford both finished in the top half of the table last season so let’s see if they can do it again this season.
Jason Price should play for Carlisle after signing for them permanently (though in football ‘premanent’ could mean six months) so I hope he’ll start getting some of those goals the manager is expecting from him.
Nicky Adams refused to go to Brentford when they offered so they’re without a Welshman.
Charlton Athletic v Bournemouth
Charlton, who didn’t miss out on automatic promotion by much last season, take on promoted Bournemouth.
Charlton have sold Stuart Fleetwood to Hereford United and are also without Grant Basey after they forgot to give him a contract and he pissed off to Aberdeen.
Rhoys Wiggins has finally signed for Bournemouth, probably only about two years after deciding he wanted to join them. Joe Partington is also likely to be in the squad.
