Chesterfield
Craig Davies was in and out of the team with a hamstring injury but when he played, he scored.
Stockport H 4-1 (Y unsporting 27, G4 90, played all)
Accrington A 2-2 (out, injury)
Robert Page finished 2011 with another appearance on the bench.
Stockport H 4-1 (unselected)
Accrington A 2-2 (bench)
Mark Crossley hasn’t been named on the bench since September.
Crewe Alexandra
Rhys Taylor has the option to move to another club in January and considering that he’d actually pretty good for a Chelsea goalkeeper, I would certainly have forgiven him if he did just that (although I’m not so sure about the Crewe fans). But the good news is that he hasn’t been corrupted by Ashley Cole and he does know what the word ‘loyalty’ means.
Northampton H 2-0 (played all)
Shrewsbury A 0-1 (played all)
Hereford United
Ryan Green returned from suspension to play Hereford’s final two matches of the season, in which they were unbeaten.
Wycombe A 2-1 (suspended)
Torquay H 2-2 (played all)
Aldershot A 1-2 (played all)
All the same, Hereford probably missed Ryan Valentine, who is still sidelined with a stomach injury.
Stuart Fleetwood made the most of his final two starts of the year by scoring in each of them.
Wycombe A 2-1 (starts, off 64)
Torquay H 2-2 (starts, G1 32, off 79)
Aldershot A 1-2 (starts, G1 3, off 78)
Macclesfield Town
Have Macclesfield Town actually superglued Sam Wedgbury to the bench or do they just not want him to play? I don’t know which is more ridiculous. I’m sure it’s no coincidence that they didn’t win any of their last three games.
Oxford A 2-1 (bench)
Bury A 2-2 (bench)
Rotherham H 0-2 (bench)
Northampton Town
Paul Walker remains Northampton’s second-choice keeper despite apparently being too young to play in League Two.
Crewe A 2-0 (bench)
Lincoln H 2-1 (bench)
Oxford United
Rhys Day was destined never to play with Oxford in the Football League. He spent the first part of the season absent with a knee injury before being sent out on loan to former club Mansfield Town. He has now signed for Mansfield permanently.

FA Cup Fixtures 6th November 2010 (Part 3)
Forest Green v Northampton Town
Forest Green have lots of injury doubts but the manager won’t say who which is no help at all. Brothers Mike Fowler and Lee Fowler and also Curtis McDonald are on Forest Green’s books. Mike seems to be a regular starter and Curtis has recently returned from a calf injury but Lee will be out for about three months due to a knee ligament injury.
Paul Walker will probably be on the bench for Northampton.
Gillingham v Dover Athletic
Adam Birchall could play for Dover against their Kent rivals. He was released from his last club, Barnet, by manager Ian Hendon, who is now the assistant manager at Gillingham. Adam has just signed a two-year contract extension after being linked with a move to... Gillingham.
Guisley v Crawley Town
Glenn Wilson could play for Crawley Town. Guiseley are unbeaten in 16 matches in all competitions.
Hartlepool United v Vauxhall Motors
Rob Marsh-Evans played for Vauxhall in the FA Cup whilst on loan from Southport but he’s returned to his parent club now. Vauxhall are unbeaten in nine.
Harrow Borough v Chesterfield
Craig Davies will hope to continue his excellent scoring record against Harrow – but only if he’s played. Mark Crossley could play in goal for Chesterfield. Robert Page could also be in contention.
Havant & Waterlooville v Droylsden
Two of the most famous giantkillers (in my time as a football supporter) go head to head in the first round of the FA Cup. The home side will be remembered for romantic reasons but the Droylsden story was more a comedy. Of more than a few errors. (Neither of them seem to have any Welsh players at the moment but these are two of my favourite football stories ever.)
Havant knocked out York City, Notts County and Swansea City before taking the lead twice at Anfield. Liverpool went on to win the game 5-2 but it should have been 4-2. One of those goals was offside. I bet Havant would love another go at Liverpool this season.
Droylsden knocked out Darlington in the FA Cup two seasons ago and then faced Chesterfield.
The first fixture between these sides was abandoned due to fog (Chesterfield were leading 2-0).
The second match was drawn 2-2 in controversial circumstances. Droylsden kicked the ball out of play to allow an injured Chesterfield player to be treated. Chesterfield didn’t return possession and following the throw-in, they accidently scored a goal. The Chesterfield manager solved the problem by telling his players to stand aside and let Droylsden score.
In the replay, Chesterfield went two goals ahead but the match was abandoned due to floodlight failure.
When the replay was replayed, Droylsden won the match and knocked Chesterfield out of the Cup.
Except they didn’t because they’d accidentally fielded an ineligible player (he was banned for a fifth booking but because of all the replays all over the place, Droylsden got confused). And not only did he play, he scored the two goals to knock Chesterfield out.
So Droylsden were thrown out of the competition, with Chesterfield progressing in their place.
Chesterfield went on to lose to Ipswich Town and therefore became one of I’m sure comparatively few teams who have played in the first two rounds (proper) of the FA Cup without actually winning a game.

Welsh Player News 16th September 2010 (League Two)
Michael Flynn says his biggest football regret is moving to Gillingham rather than staying with Wigan Athletic and possibly playing in the Premier League with them – although he probably did do the best thing for his career.
Tony James was given a warm reception when he came off Burton Albion’s bench to play against Hereford United. And not just by the Burton fans.
Chesterfield goalkeeper Mark Crossley takes part in the latest Football League podcast.
Gareth Owen was delighted to help Port Vale to their first home win of the season.
Young Shrewsbury striker Tom Bradshaw says former team-mate and mentor Dave Hibbert is his inspitation but now he has to go it alone. And he’s certainly doing all right on his own – he not only scored on his Shrewsbury debut, he scored on his Wales debut too.
Peter Gilbert says the problems at Southend United are helping to bring the players closer together.

League Two Results 4th September 2010 Part Two
Chesterfield 2-1 Lincoln City
Chesterfield remain in the top three after a narrow but probably deserved victory over Lincoln.
Craig Davies got the winner for Chesterfield, his second goal in as many games. Mark Crossley was on the bench for Chesterfield but Robert Page was missing with an Achilles injury, despite reports that he could be back in the starting eleven.
Macclesfield Town 0-2 Stockport County
Stockport claimed their first win of the season over Macclesfield, who sit second bottom in the table.
Owain fon Williams was dropped to the bench and his replacement, unfortunately for Owain, did rather well. He kept a clean sheet and saved a penalty which just isn’t fair.
Sam Wedgbury was on the bench for Macclesfield.
Oxford United 4-0 Morecambe
Morecambe are bottom of the table after Oxford thrashed them 4-0.
Oxford were without Rhys Day, who has a knee injury.
Darren Moss was dropped to Morecambe’s bench. I wouldn’t leave him there again if I were you, Morecambe.
Shrewsbury Town 1-0 Rotherham United
A win for Rotherham would have put them level on points with Shrewsbury but the home team won and climbed to the top of the table too. The goal came after just five minutes but Rotherham refused to concede defeat (although I suppose they had to after the match) and played very well, without quite managing to do anything like score a goal.
Tom Bradshaw wasn’t in Shrewsbury’s squads although he did score in a recent reserve match.
Rotherham’s Mark Bradley was away with the under-21s.
Southend United 2-1 Torquay United
Torquay’s unbeaten run finally came to an end at the hands – or hopefully feet – of Southend. Torquay had a good game and could have got an equaliser but Southend weren’t having it.
Peter Gilbert played in defence for Southend.
Stevenage 1-1 Crewe Alexandra
The points were shared but perhaps that was only right as both teams did look as though they were playing for the same side – the referee wasn’t happy with Crewe’s kit and they ended up playing in Stevenage’s away shirts.
Rhys Taylor played in goal for Crewe and looked pretty good. Literally and figuratively.

League Two Results 21st August 2010 Part 1
Accrington Stanley 3-0 Macclesfield Town
I thought Macclesfield Town would finish in the bottom two this season and they’re certainly in the bottom two now. Accrington are unbeaten this season.
Sam Wedgbury played his first complete game for Macclesfield.
Burton Albion 3-2 Morecambe
Last season, Burton had a good start and then tailed off while Morecambe put together a great run towards the end and got into the play-offs. This season looks similar, which should be some comfort for Morecambe fans. Morecambe were winning 2-1 but Burton came back to take the points.
Tony James was back on the bench for Burton. Morecambe had the sense to play their own Welsh defender, Darren Moss, who got the assist for their first goal.
Bury 1-1 Northampton Town
Northampton took the lead at Bury through a penalty and although Bury equalised, Northampton held firm and doubled their points tally for this season.
Paul Walker was on the bench for Northampton.
Chesterfield 4-0 Hereford United
Hereford’s start to the season hasn’t been too bad but promotion contenders Chesterfield, now in second place, were too much for them on this occasion.
Ryan Valentine usually takes great penalties and he did on this occasion but the goalkeeper made an impossibly good save. Chesterfield were only winning 2-0 at the time. To quote various commentators, the score would have been different if that had gone in. Without a doubt. Not the way Ryan was hoping to celebrate his 300th Football League appearance.
Chesterfield were without all their Welshmen. Robert Page is injured, Craig Davies is suspended and Mark Crossley is apparently just old. He’s also famous for saving penalties so Ryan wouldn’t have done any better with him.
Ryan, namesake Ryan Green and Stuart Fleetwood, who hit a shot against the bar, all played the full match for Hereford.

League Two Fixtures 21st August 2010 Part 1
Accrington Stanley v Macclesfield Town
Accrington and Macclesfield are both without a win this season and that can only come to an end for one of them tomorrow.
Sam Wedgbury has played a part for Macclesfield in every game so far this season.
Burton Albion v Morecambe
And here are two more teams without a win.
Tony James could be back on the bench for Burton but I would keep him where he is. Burton have kept clean sheets in both their league games. The defence seems fine.
So maybe they could bring in a new midfielder instead. They do have a new one called Garyn Preen…
Darren Moss has started every game for Morecambe this season so let’s hope that continues.
Bury v Northampton Town
Bury have three points from their opening two games but Northampton have just the one.
Paul Walker will probably be on the bench for Northampton. Apparently the old saying ‘if he’s good enough, he’s old enough’ doesn’t apply in this case. (He is good enough. He played in pre-season and Northampton were unbeaten. Even though they played against Watford and Birmingham.)
Chesterfield v Hereford United
Chesterfield are up in the play-off places now with Hereford only behind them on goal difference.
The Sofas will be without Craig Davies as he completes his three-match suspension. I’ve finally found out that Robert Page’s absence from Chesterfield’s squad is due to an Achilles injury but I don’t know about Mark Crossley. Maybe he’s just a bit old.
Ryan Green and Ryan Valentine should keep their places in defence for Hereford but Stuart Fleetwood hasn’t scored yet this season. I’d still play him but managers can be a bit funny sometimes about strikers who don’t score.

League Two Results 14th August 2010 Part 2
Macclesfield Town 0-1 Shrewsbury Town
Shrewsbury continued their perfect start to the season and were a goal up after just three minutes but they were probably just a little bit worried when they lost their goalkeeper eighteen minutes later. Macclesfield had a few chances but were unable to find an equaliser.
Sam Wedgbury came off the bench for Macclesfield after 61 minutes. Tom Bradshaw stayed on the bench for Shrewsbury.
Morecambe 0-0 Rotherham United
Morecambe found promotion hopefuls Rotherham to be trickier customers than Coventry City but at least Morecambe managed to get their first point out of it.
Without Morecambe’s strong defensive performance, Rotherham could easily have scored but Darren Moss helped enure this didn’t happen.
Mark Bradley is yet to cement a place in Rotherham’s starting line-up. He stayed on the bench.
Northampton Town 0-0 Accrington Stanley
Northampton worked hard to break down Accrington’s resistance – while the Accies did little to test them in return. But Northampton could not penetrate Accrington’s defence and the points were shared.
Paul Walker was on the bench for Northampton.
Port Vale 1-1 Chesterfield
Port Vale should have won this comfortably but they would not take their chances and Chesterfield got away with a point and actually came pretty close to winning it but the Port Vale keeper was, lucky for them, more alert than his team-mates.
Gareth Owen was unlucky when an attempted clearance fell to a Chesterfield player who promptly put the shot away but he did his best to make up for it, coming close to scoring as well as trying to set up his team-mates. And he didn’t let in any other goals.
Chesterfield were without all their Welsh players. Craig Davies is still suspended after losing an appeal to have the card rescinded while Mark Crossley and Robert Page just didn’t make the squad.
Stockport County 0-0 Wycombe Wanderers
These two sides didn’t win many matches in League one last season and neither of them managed a win when they faced each other again in League Two. Stockport had no problems when it came to creating the chances but putting them away seemed a step too far.
But it was a good day for Owain fon Williams. He worked hard to keep a clean sheet and he’s hardly responsible for what happens at the other end of the pitch.

League Two Results 7th August 2010 Part 1
Accrington Stanley 0-0 Aldershot Town
Aldershot’s record of winning every opening game of the League season came to an end yesterday. They do remain unbeaten in opening games… but this is only their third season in the League. It wasn’t the best game in the world but both clubs are officially on an unbeaten run. That’s pretty much all they can take from this game.
Darren Jones started for Aldershot and helped them to a clean sheet. Aaron Morris stayed on the bench but Aldershot manager Kevin Dillon only made one substitution. Who knows what would have happened if he’d made two?
Burton Albion 0-0 Oxford United
Burton remain the Football League’s newest recruit as the two teams that came up this season have played in the League before. And in the case of Oxford, they’ve played in the top division. They probably were the better side but not by as much as their history might suggest.
Burton manager Paul Peschisolido left Player of the Year Tony James on the bench.
Bury 0-1 Port Vale
Bury looked set for a play-off place at least last season while a late run from Port Vale meant that manager Micky Adams’ claim that Vale would make the play-offs didn’t seem so ridiculous after all. Neither made the play-offs but on this showing, Port Vale are more than capable of getting there this year. Bury looked less capable but it’s only the first week.
Gareth Owen played in defence for Port Vale. He did use his hand in a naughty sort of way like Thierry Henry but the referee didn’t see it and I’m sure he’ll never do anything like that again.
Chesterfield 2-1 Barnet
Chesterfield are another who just missed out on the play-offs but Barnet just missed out on something else entirely. They’ll be wanting to do much better this season but losing to Chesterfield probably doesn’t count as a disaster and Barnet played well and created chances.
It wasn’t a great debut match for Chesterfield’s Craig Davies. He got a straight red for a nasty tackle in the 83rd minute. Robert Page was on the bench but goalkeeper Mark Crossley wasn’t in the squad.
Crewe Alexandra 0-1 Hereford United
Crewe did surprisingly well in pre-season but this will make their opening-day result all the more disappoiuting as Hereford are one of the favourites to go down. Crewe didn’t play badly in this match either but they didn’t take their chances.
It wasn’t an ideal debut for loan keeper Rhys Taylor but he shouldn’t feel too discouraged. Without Rhys, it could have been much worse.
Ryan Green and Ryan Valentine played in defence for Hereford. Stuart Fleetwood made his second ‘debut’ for Hereford – actually his 45th appearance. He’ll be hoping to have doubled that by the end of the season and if he continues to play like this, he deserves it. He might be a striker but he defends. There are defenders who don’t do that.

League Two Fixtures 7th August 2010 Part 1
Accrington Stanley v Aldershot Town
According to my new favourite football blog, Aldershot are the best team in the league at winning their opening matches. They have also won all their pre-season games. Watch out Accrington!
Aldershot have signed two Welsh players following their releases from Walsall and Cardiff City. Darren Jones and Aaron Morris will be hoping to start.
Burton Albion v Oxford United
Burton start their second season in the Football League against newly-promoted Oxford.
Some journalist somewhere said Tony James would be on the bench for this match but I don’t know why. New signing Garyn Preen could also be in the squad although he’s pretty young.
Oxford centre back Rhys Day is expected to be out until September with a knee problem.
Bury v Port Vale
Both clubs will be hoping for a place in the play-offs this time around after just missing out last season.
Gareth Owen should play for Port Vale but Lewis Haldane is still recovering from blood poisoning.
Chesterfield v Barnet
Chesterfield just missed out on the play-offs last season and are expected to be contenders again. Barnet definitely won’t want to go through another season like the last one, stressful isn’t the word.
Craig Davies is expected to make his League debut for Chesterfield after signing from Bristol Rovers. Robert Page could start too but Mark Crossley will probably be on the bench.
Rotherham United v Lincoln City
Rotherham could have been promoted last year without their enforced winter break and subsequent backlog of fixtures. This year, they’ll probably make it. Lincoln will probably be thinking more about relegation.
Mark Bradley has signed for Rotherham after being released by Walsall. I hope he’ll get more chances at Rotherham but he’s a doubt for this match.
Lincoln came very close to signing David Stephens from Norwich City following his very successful loan spell last season. But he decided to go to Aberdeen instead.

Welsh Player News (and rumours) 2nd August, League Two (Part 1)
Aaron Morris made his first appearance for new club Aldershot Town in a 2-1 victory over League One’s Colchester United. He came on as a substitute in place of Darren Jones. Colchester’s squad included Lloyd James, Tom Bender and Lee Beevers.
Michael Flynn’s commanding presence in midfield should help Bradford City to win promotion this year, according to a Sky Sports blog.
Tony James stayed on the bench as Burton Albion lost to Kidderminster Harriers. But every team is allowed an off-day and it’s better if it happens in pre-season.
Cheltenham Town did pretty well to draw with Bristol Rovers. Josh Low made a very fine pass. Josh Klein-Davies came off the bench after 73 minutes.
The Football Network preview Chesterfield’s season, saying Craig Davies is the pick of their new signings. I quite agree. No mention of Mark Crossley or Robert Page but I’m sure they’ll be a big help too.

Welsh Player News (and rumours) 3rd June (Leagues One and Two
League One
Colchester United’s Tom Bender has been told he’ll have more first-team opportunities next season.
Tony Roberts has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Dagenham & Redbridge. The newly-promited Daggers have also signed a very Welsh-sounding left back from Histon – Gareth Gwillim. Histon’s Wikipedia page says Gareth is English but he must have some Welsh blood with a name like that.
Tony was delighted when Dagenham achieved promotion at Wembley last Sunday.
Ben Davies is one of just nine players under contract at Notts County. I suppose you could argue Ben has the skills of two players but even that only brings you up to ten...
Craig Morgan wants to leave Peterborough United following their relegation to League One. Peterborogh Today thinks his departure looks likely.
League Two
Michael Flynn says he hopes to stay at Bradford City next season but he needs to ‘iron out’ a few things in his contract first.
Chesterfield’s second-choice goalkeeper Mark Crossley has been interviewed for the position of manager of Oldham Athletic.
Rob Page is one of three players thought to be in contention to win Chesterfield’s Player of the Season award. He’ll find out on Saturday as long as this isn’t a really really old article with yesterday’s date on.
Grimsby Town striker Chris Jones has been put on the transfer list. He played a part in Grimsby’s season, even scoring two League goals but then he was sent out on loan to Neath and never heard of again.
Lincoln City were hoping to sign David Stephens from Norwich City after a very successful loan spell last season. However, David is now having second thoughts.

Welsh Player News 29th May (League Two)
Michael Flynn says he is embarrassed by Bradford City’s inability to mount a promotion challenge.
However, joint-chairman Mark Lawn thinks Michael will probably be still at Bradford next season.
Former Wales goalkeeper Mark Crossley, now with Chesterfield, says he’s proud to be the only keeper to save a Matt Le Tissier penalty. Mark was taking part in a study on how to take the perfect penalty. My tip would be: make sure Mark Crossley isn’t in goal.
Mark is also on the shortlist to become the new manager of Oldham Athletic. He is currently a player/coach at Chesterfield.
Ryan Green is disappointed with the contract he’s been offered and could leave Hereford United. He says he’d love to stay but he doesn’t want to take a pay cut.
Craig Jones has not been offered a contract to stay at Hereford but chairman and acting manager Graham Turner has written him a reference and suggested the new Hereford manager might be interested in signing him.
Ben Davies has written about the highs and lows of winning promotion with Notts County.
(I’m not posting a link because it’s on a gambling site but it’s a great read)

League Two Results 8th May Part 1
Burton Albion 3-0 Grimsby Town
Burton won their second consecutive game to secure a 13th place finish – and relegate Grimsby Town. A great escape was on the cards for Grimsby after an impressive recent run of form but they still needed another win – and for Barnet not to win (Barnet beat Rochdale 1-0).
Tony James played in defence for Burton.
Cheltenham Town 1-1 Accrington Stanley
Cheltenham went into the final game with a mathematical chance of being relegated. A draw was enough to guarantee their safety, but with Grimsby Town losing anyway it didn’t matter in the end. Accrington finish 15th.
Josh Low scored in the eighth minute in what could be his last professional football match. Josh is about to qualify a lawyer and has been offered a job for next season. However, he has also been offered a new contract at Cheltenham so let’s see what he decides. Josh was in the League Two Team of the Week following this match, along with Hereford United’s Darren Jones and Ryan Valentine.
Chesterfield 2-1 Bournemouth
Chesterfield still had a chance of the play-offs before this game, while a defeat for Bournemouth could have meant they finished 3rd instead of 2nd. But in the end, this result didn’t make any difference, except to the two teams involved. Wins for Morecambe and Dagenham & Redbridge meant that they took the two play-off spots up for grabs while another defeat for Rochdale meant they couldn’t climb above Bournemouth.
Robert Page kept his place in Chesterfield’s starting line-up with Mark Crossley on the bench.
Bournemouth were without Rhoys Wiggins, who returned to parent club Norwich City last week. Joe Partington was on the bench.
Crewe Alexandra 0-1 Bradford City
Both these teams were picked out by Football League Show pundits as being teams who finished lower than they should have done. When the teams met on the final day, Bradford took all three points the former Premier League side finished 14th. Former Championship side Crewe finished 18th.
A Michael Flynn free kick started the move that led to Bradford’s goal.
Darlington 0-2 Dagenham & Redbridge
Darlington might be long down but that doesn’t mean they can’t cause trouble when they want to, having recently done just that for Macclesfield Town, Cheltenham Town and Rochdale. Dagenham needed to win to be sure of taking the final play-off place. But this time, the best team won and Dag 7 Red could be in League One next season.
Tony Roberts didn’t have loads to do in goal for Dagenham & Redbridge but when called upon, he was always awake.
Hereford United 3-0 Rotherham United
It might not have been a great season for Hereford but they did secure survival some time ago and they ended the season with a comprehensive win over one of the teams in the play-offs. So it’s not all bad. Rotherham got into the play-offs anyway but they’re probably very glad the league doesn’t have 39 games a season.
Darren Jones scored Hereford’s second goal in the 21st minute. Ryan Green and Ryan Valentine also played in defence with Craig Jones on the bench. Darren, Ryan V and Cheltenham’s Josh Low are all in the League Two Team of the Week. I hope Ryan G doesn’t feel left out.

League Two Fixtures 8th May Part 1
Burton Albion v Grimsby Town
Last week, Burton beat the club in second place. This week, they finish the club who’s second bottom. Grimsby really need a win to survive although a draw will be fine if Barnet lose 7-0 or something. The team Burton beat last week, Rochdale, play Barnet this week.
Tony James is the Players’ Player of the Year and the Supporters’ Player of the Year for Burton. He’s hoping Burton can aim for the play-offs next season.
Cheltenham Town v Accrington Stanley
Cheltenham should be fine too unless they get seriously thrashed. Accrington still have a chance of a top-half finish.
Josh Low could be playing his last match for Cheltenham. Josh is about to qualify as a lawyer and he’s been offered a job in that profession.
Chesterfield v Bournemouth
Chesterfield could get into the play-offs if they win this match. Bournemouth are already promoted but considering Rochdale are playing Barnet, they might need a win in order to hang on to second place.
Robert Page seems to be in and out of Chesterfield’s starting line-up all the time at the moment so I won’t predict where he’ll be. Mark Crossley will probably be on the bench though.
Rhoys Wiggins has left Bournemouth – for now, anyway – after his loan spell to the end of the season turned out not to be until the end of the season after all. Joe Partington is still there though.
Crewe Alexandra v Bradford City
Bradford still have a very very faint chance of finishing in the top half but Crewe don’t. The former Championship and Premier League sides will be hoping for a better season next time. And Bradford, certainly look like they’re going to get it.
Michael Flynn will be in midfield for Bradford. He is out of contract at the end of the season and was probably told today whether he has a future with Bradford or not.
Darlington v Dagenham & Redbridge
Dagenham & Redbridge need to win to be sure of a play-off spot although a draw could be enough. However, relegated Darlington seem to be enjoying playing their part in seeing who goes into the play-offs and who goes down.
Tony Roberts will be in goal for Dagenham.
Hereford United v Rotherham United
Rotherham might rest some players to keep them fresh for the play-offs so Hereford might grab the opportunity to put some more points between themselves and the relegation zone.
Ryan Green, Ryan Valentine and Darren Jones will probably all start. Craig Jones could be on the bench again. So if you’re a Welshman and your name is Ryan or Jones, you might like to consider a move to Hereford next season. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind having Ryan Giggs in the side.

League Two Results 1st May Part 1
Accrington Stanley 2-0 Chesterfield
Chesterfield still have a chance of play-off football – the twists and turns of League Two probably aren’t over quite yet. Another result like that for Accrington could give them a top-half finish.
Robert Page was back in the starting line-up for Chesterfield. Mark Crossley was on the bench.
Aldershot Town 3-1 Lincoln City
Aldershot’s win means they are guaranteed to be in the League Two play-offs, alongside Rotherham United and any two from six other teams. Lincoln will finish 20th or 21st.
David Stephens was given another start for Lincoln after en excellent performance when he was thrown into the starting eleven last week.
Bournemouth 4-0 Port Vale
Bournemouth’s emphatic win over Port Vale puts them in second place, a point ahead of third-placed Rochdale. Vale are still only two points outside the play-offs.
Rhoys Wiggins played what I believe is his last game for Bournemouth, due to the silly loan rules. It seems as if you sign someone on loan until the end of the season, they can’t actually stay until the end of the season, they can only stay until a certain date. Which is fine if you’re on loan to a Championship side, as I think the cut-off date came after they’d finished their season (play-offs aside). Rhoys was substituted in the 87th minute but I would guess that was so he could be given a deserved standing ovation rather than because he was injured. Rhoys celebrated his final match for Bournemouth with the assist for Bournemouth’s opening goal. But he hinted he’d be more than happy to be back with Bournemouth next season. With Norwich going up to the Championship (not that Rhoys isn’t good enough for the Championship) and Bournemouth now without a transfer embargo, anything is possible.
Joe Partington was on the bench for Bournemouth.
Craig Davies and Lewis Haldane both played for Port Vale but Gareth Owen was again out with hip and back problems. Craig could have scored but the Bournemouth goalkeeper was having a world-class moment. Lewis might have scored too but the post got in the way.
Bradford City 2-0 Northampton
Bradford are unlikely to get into the top half of the table although it is mathematically possible but this sort of game will stand them in good stead for next season. Bradford are now unbeaten in five matches. Northampton could still get into the play-offs mathematically but it’s very unlikely that every result will go their way.
Michael Flynn was in Bradford’s midfield while Peter Gilbert played in defence for Northampton.

League Two Fixtures 1st May Part 1
Accrington Stanley v Chesterfield
Accrington hope to build on their victory over, well, Barnet by getting another win against Chesterfield. Chesterfield are only out of the play-offs on goal difference so they’ll really really want to beat Accrington.
Mark Crossley and Robert Page were on the bench for Chesterfield’s last two matches. They didn’t win. But they also didn’t win the last time Robert played…
Aldershot Town v Lincoln City
Aldershot are in 5th place and in any other division that would mean their place in the play-offs was confirmed. In League Two, all it really means is that they’re guaranteed to finish in the top half of the table. But Lincon’s recent victories include matches against play-off contenders Bury (last week) and promoted Bournemouth. Then again, they’ve also recently lost to play-off contenders Shrewsbury Town and Morecambe, and promoted Notts County.
David Stephens was impressive in his surprise debut for Lincoln and it would be very mean to drop him after that.
Bournemouth v Port Vale
Bournemouth are up and nothing can stop them. They’re also out of administration. So no-one would blame them if they’ve spent the week partying. It’s a great achievement and they deserve it (I mean the promotion but they do deserve the party too). Port Vale on the other hand are one of seven teams with between 66 and 69 points. They’ll definitely be hoping for a Bournemouth hangover (not necessarily a literal one, just one of the sort teams often get when they’ve just done something amazing).
For some reason, this could be Rhoys Wiggins’ last game for Bournemouth. I thought he’d signed until the end of the season so he should have two more games. But actually, maybe he’ll play a lot more than two more games for Bournemouth. The fans would certainly like that. They’ve been chanting for manager Eddie Howe to sign him permanently.
Joe Partington could be left out of the squad again as for once there just isn’t room for everybody.
Gareth Owen missed Port Vale’s last match with a back and hip injury and he could be out for this match too. He’s had a sugar injection and he’ll be assessed before the match. Gareth is supporting a fun run called the 210k but he’s hoping he won’t be able to run in it because it’s on the same day as the play-off final.
Craig Davies and Lewis Haldane are fit as far as I know. I’m thrilled Bournemouth got promoted and not just because of Rhoys and Joe but it would be great to see Craig and Lewis banging the goals in for Port Vale.
Bradford City v Northampton Town
Bradford could yet sneak into the top of the table but it isn’t that likely. Northampton meanwhile are hoping to sneak into the play-offs. They’re currently tenth but just a point behind seventh place.
Michael Flynn and Peter Gilbert will probably play for Bradford and Northampton respectively (not that I’m suggesting it might happen the other way around).
Accrington hope to build on their victory over, well, Barnet by getting another win against Chesterfield. Chesterfield are only out of the play-offs on goal difference so they’ll really really want to beat Accrington.

League Two Results 24th April Part 1
Burton Albion 0-2 Bournemouth
Bournemouth sealed promotion with a win over Burton Albion, who are set to finish their debut League season in mid-table.
Tony James was absent from Burton’s team, apparently rested.
Rhoys Wiggins played in defence for Burton but Joe Partington wasn’t in the squad.
Well done to Bournemouth – it’s an amazing achievement. They could so easily have been aiming for promotion from the Blue Square Premier this season. Instead they’re promoted from League Two and next season’s fixtures might even include Leeds United.
Cheltenham Town 1-2 Aldershot Town
This match looked like it was going to be a draw but a late winner kept Aldershot in the play-off places. Cheltenham could still, in theory, be relegated on goal difference.
Cheltenham’s Josh Low was a doubt due to a leg injury but he was able to play.
Chesterfield 1-1 Bradford City
Chesterfield are out of the play-off places after only managing a draw with Bradford. Bradford will finish mid-table, which can’t be what they were hoping for but it could be worse – and would have been, if they hadn’t managed to turn around their run of bad form.
Robert Page and Mark Crossley were both on the bench for Chesterfield.
Michael Flynn was in midfield for Bradford and got the assist for their goal with a throw-in.
Hereford United 2-1 Rochdale
Rochdale’s poor run of form continues, with Hereford being the latest to take points off the possible Champions.
Ryan Valentine had the chance to put Hereford 2-0 ahead after winning a penalty and choosing to take the kick himself. It was saved but he stayed focused and managed to put one of the rebounds away. Ryan Green and Darren Jones also played for Hereford.

League Two Results 17th April Part 1
Accrington Stanley 1-2 Hereford United
I kind of knew for a while that Hereford will definitely be playing League Two football next season but I’m still really happy for them now it’s official. Accrington will be fine too of course but they’ve now failed to win their last eight matches.
Hereford’s Ryan Valentine conceded a penalty for the second time in two matches (although this one seems harsh, more ball to hand than handball) – but when you’re on the winning side, it doesn’t seem to matter nearly as much. Darren Jones also played the full match but Ryan Green didn’t recover from a thigh injury in time to play.
Bournemouth 2-0 Darlington
Bournemouth are now right points clear of fourth-placed Rotherhan United – they’d have to do something pretty bad to mess this up. Newly-relegated Darlington might have beaten Rochdale but Bournemouth were far less amenable.
Rhoys Wiggins was unlucky not to score for Bournemouth, if Darlington’s goalkeeper made saves like that more often, maybe they wouldn’t be relegated. There was no sign of Joe Partington although Bournemouth did have their full complement of substitutes.
Bradford City 2-1 Barnet
Bradford haven’t had the best season but at least they’re nearly twenty points clear of the relegation places – and at least they didn’t lose to a team who are known for their inability to win matches and are the most likely team to be caught by Grimsby Town (although this is unlikely).
Michael Flynn started on the bench after recovering from a rib injury. He came on as a substitute and while it would be an exaggeration to say he *soon* made his presence felt – it actually took him thirty-four minutes – he was the player who got the important stoppage-time winner.
Bury 1-1 Port Vale
A draw was enough to keep both sides in contention for the play-offs – although Bury are more in contention than Port Vale. Vale are two points outside the play-offs with Bury four points ahead of them.
Gareth Owen, Craig Davies and Lewis Haldane all played for Port Vale. Craig was a bit upset that he didn’t get to take Port Vale’s penalty but luckily it went in anyway.
Dagenham & Redbridge 2-1 Burton Albion
Degenham & Redbridge won this match in the 93rd minute. It must have been a great feeling for the- but less so for Burton. The win moved Dagenham & Redbridge back into the play-off places. They’ve been there before but as soon as they get there, they start dropping points. I really hope they can stay there this time. I don’t know why but I’ve always liked Dagenham & Redbridge. Maybe it’s because they’re named after Tube stations.
Tony Roberts played in goal for Dagenham.
Macclesfield Town 2-0 Chesterfield
Macclesfield put a dent in Chesterfield’s play-off hopes with this win. Although as Chesterfield are only outside the play-offs on goal difference, it isn’t a very big dent. But really, you can’t expect to go up to League One with a goal difference of 0... although there’s a chance Bury could do just that. Good thing Macclesfield didn’t win by more.
Matthew Tipton was given another start despite scoring in the wrong net last time but I think he must have been worried about doing that again because he didn’t score at all this time. He should still stay in the team for next time though, you shouldn’t change a winning team, should you?
Robert Page dropped back to Chesterfield’s bench, where he joined Mark Crossley.

League Two Fixtures 17th April Part 2
Macclesfield Town v Chesterfield
Chesterfield need to win to keep them in the play-off places but Macclesfield only need a point to ensure sure they’re mathematically guaranteed to spend next season in League Two (although the chances are they would do even if they lose their next four games – Grimsby Town could catch them on points but Macclesfield have a much better goal difference.
Matthew Tipton would probably love another start but he scored an own goal last week and that tends not to go down well with managers.
Robert Page was back in Chesterfield’s starting line-up for the last game so I hope he’ll stay there. Mark Crossley will probably be on the bench though.
Notts County v Morecambe
Notts County moved to the top of the table after beating Lincoln City. A point today will see them promoted no matter what Rotherham United do. Morecambe are out of the play-off zone but only by a point.
Ben Davies seems to be getting a goal or an assist in every game at the moment – so watch out for Wales’ answer to Lionel Messi. Darren Moss played for Morecambe reserves as they beat Tranmere Rovers reserves 5-2 this week and Sky Sports think he could start the non-reserve match too.
Rochdale v Northampton Town
Rochdale were looking certain to win the League but they’ve recently suffered a string of poor results, including most recently a defeat to, well, Darlington. Oops! Notts County have now claimed the top spot and Bournemouth are gaining on Rochdale now. But they could seal promotion today if Rotherham United fail to win.
Northampton are one of three teams who are just two points outside the play-offs.
Peter Gilbert should play for Northampton.
Rotherham United v Cheltenham Town
Rotherham need to win to stand any chances of winning the League but I imagine they’ll be thinking more of 3rd place now. Cheltenham moved up a place this week and their small chances of relegation will disappear almost completely if they win this weekend and Grimsby Town lose.
Josh Low will be in Cheltenham’s line-up. He’s scored two goals in the last two games so I’m sure he’ll want to keep that run going.
Shrewsbury Town v Lincoln City
Shrewsbury are six points outside the play-offs but that doesn’t mean they can’t get there. I don’t think they will though. A win could see Lincoln mathematically safe from relegation.
Shrewsbury’s Will Richards has been ill this week, poor baby, and might not be available for this match. David Stephens could be on Lincoln’s bench.

League Two Results 13th April Part 2
Grimsby Town 2-2 Chesterfield
Grimsby were 2-0 up at one stage but there’s a reason why Chesterfield are in the play-off places and Grimsby’s best chance of the play-offs is getting into the Conference ones next season.
Robert Page was back in Chesterfield’s starting line-up while in Mark Crossley they have a very experienced substitute goalkeeper.
Macclesfield Town 1-1 Burton Albion
Macclesfield took the lead early on but an own goal from my favourite Macclesfield player gave Burton an equaliser. Both clubs look set to finish in mid-table which is really good considering where they expected them to finish – I thought about 10th for Burton and 23rd for Macclesfield.
Matthew Tipton finally got a start and he even scored a goal but he kind of got it in the wrong net. I think Macclesfield are very lucky to have a striker (BBC Sport rightly called him a ‘star striker’ even though he’s mostly been bench-warming lately) who is prepared to track back and defend. They should definitely offer him a new contract.
Tony James was in defence for Burton and came very close to getting them a late winner.
Notts County 3-1 Lincoln City
Notts County moved to the top of the table with a win over Lincoln. They could have been promoted too but unfortunately Rotherham United remembered how to win. But never mind lads, it won’t be long now. Lincoln are safely in 20th place.
Ben Davies didn’t score this time but he got the assist for the first goal. I think I might marry him, if he carries on scoring and setting up goals every week he’s going to make me very happy.
David Stephens wasn’t on the bench for Lincoln. But I still love him… which might be a problem if I’m going to marry Ben.
Rotherham United 1-0 Northampton Town
Ten-man Rotherham spoiled Notts County’s promotion party when they beat Northampton Town. But as Northampton had only nine men perhaps it wasn’t really surprising. Northampton are two points outside the play-offs.
Peter Gilbert played in defence for Northampton.
Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Cheltenham Town
Shrewsbury still entertain hopes of the play-offs while Cheltenham might not be as safe as they look. But they did move ahead of Barnet on goal difference.
Will Richards wasn’t in Shrewsbury’s side. Josh Low nearly scored again which would have made it three in two games.
Grimsby were 2-0 up at one stage but there’s a reason why Chesterfield are in the play-off places and Grimsby’s best chance of the play-offs is getting into the Conference ones next season.
