Arsenal 1-1 Leeds United
Arsenal will need a replay in order to beat Leeds – and from the way that both teams played, an Arsenal win is not a foregone conclusion. Arsene Wenger fielded a weakened, if not weak side and they were very nearly made to suffer as Manchester United were last season. Leeds took the lead through an early penalty before Arsenal equalised in stoppage team by the same method. Arsenal were rightly awarded a penalty earlier in the game, only for the referee to change his mind, but a penalty was later awarded following what Theo Walcott is very keen to tell us was a dive. The team who wins the replay will play Huddersfield Town at home.
Aaron Ramsey was on the bench for Arsenal and was seen warming up although he was an unused substitute. It’s not necessarily an insult to Arsenal’s performance to say that this was the best moment in the game.
Sanchez Watt, on loan from Arsenal, was given permission to play for loan club Leeds in this match. He says his loyalties were divided, as were those of his family but he’s happy with the result and he’s looking forward to playing Arsenal at Elland Road.
Bolton Wanderers 2-0 York City
York came so close to winning themselves a home replay but late appearances for Bolton strikers Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander, both of whom have been on good form, gave Bolton two goals in the last seven mnutes. York played well and they deserved something from the game. Hopefully it will give them some comfort to know they can match a side who are competing for a place in the Europa League. Bolton have another home tie in the fourth round and will face fellow Premier League side Wigan Athletic.
Sam Ricketts played the full match for Bolton.
Danny Parslow was in defence for York and nearly got an assist but it was only an assist for a Bolton goal so I bet he was glad that chance was missed. Levi Mackin was on the bench.
Bristol City 0-3 Sheffield Wednesday
At first glance, this result doesn’t seem like much of a surprise but it was actually the first (alphabetically) of many giant-killings. Bristol City gave Sheffield Wednesday some trouble in attack but in defence they struggled as much as the scoreline suggests. Sheffield Wednesday will host either Wycombe Wanderers or Hereford United in the next round.
Lewin Nyatanga was in defence for Bristol City. Christian Ribeiro was a 63rd-minute substitute but he left the field just ten minutes later with a hamstring injury. It looks as though he could be out for several weeks but Bristol City won’t know for sure until the swelling goes down.
Brett Pitman kept the Wednesday defence hard at work but there was no place in the squad for Gavin Williams. Gavin was on the losing side for loan club Yeovil Town against Sheffield Wednesday but Yeovil only lost by two goals, despite being the home side.
Burnley 4-2 Port Vale
Burnley might be struggling in the Championship but they were convincing winners over League Two promotion contenders Port Vale, who have just lost their manager to Sheffield United (and yes, it was Wales’ fault). However, while the better team certainly won, Port Vale worked very hard and gave Burnley more than a few anxious moments.
Lewis Haldane started for Port Vale for only the second time since recovering from blood poisoning Stoke & Staffordshire says it’s his third start of the season though so maybe I missed one) and got the assist for Port Vale’s first goal. Gareth Owen, new manager Jim Gannon’s chosen captain for the day, played 90 minutes.
Burton Albion 2-1 Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough’s only consolation is that Newcastle United, Sunderland and also Hartlepool United were also the victims of a Cupset but perhaps it is slightly more painful for a Middlesbrough side who have seen themselves fall from being a mid-table Premier League side to contenders for relegation to League One within a couple of years. Too good to go down? Well, they weren’t good enough to beat a mid-table League Two team yesterday.
Middlesbrough didn’t play badly. They dominated and created chances but chances are no good if you don’t take them. However, Burton were excellent. They worked hard, played well and they won the game. They will be away at Burnley in the next round.
Tony James was a half-time substitute for Burton – which means he won’t be available for Cup games if Hereford United buy him.
Danny Coyne got a rare start for Middlesbrough but was sadly unable to make the most of it. But that wasn’t entirely his fault. He didn’t have to make a save for the first 80 minutes.

Transfer News and Rumours 8th January 2011 (Leagues 1 and 2)
Jason Price has returned to Carlisle United after his loan spell with Bradford City came to an end.
Rochdale have signed Nicky Adams from Brentford permanently. Nicky joined Brentford in the summer from Leicester City but he couldn’t settle and was loaned to former club Rochdale. It seems he likes it there.
Hereford United are interested in signing their former player Tony James. Tony returned to the club on loan this season but is now back with Burton Albion.

Burnley v Port Vale
Port Vale are the team on the winning run although it’s only a winning run of one match and Burnley are on a win-lose win-lose run and it’s their turn to win.
Gareth Owen should play in defence for Port Vale – new manager Jim Gannon says he will be a big part of their promotion push. Lewis Haldane might be saved for games they have more chance of winning but you never know.

Owain fon Williams exchanged Stockport County’s relegation fight for a promotion race with loan club Bury. He was great but as soon as their other keeper was fit, Owain was on the bench. (And Bury lost.)

League Two Results 11th December 2010 (Part 1)
Barnet 2-0 Accrington Stanley
Barnet remain in the relegation places on goal difference but they do mean business and could move ahead of Accrington if they win their next game too.
Grant Basey helped Barnet to keep a clean sheet.
Joe Jacobson was probably trying to do the same for Accrington but he was less successful.
Bradford City 1-0 Hereford United
It was all going so well for Hereford but now the confidence has gone (and if they keep this up, the physio manager could be going too). Bradford end a run of four matches without a win.
Jason Price didn’t score Bradford’s goal but I’m sure he would have done if he hadn’t been put in a defensive role when he finally came off the bench.
Due to suspension and injury, Stuart Fleetwood was Hereford’s only Welsh representative and even he didn’t make it onto the pitch until the 72nd minute.
Burton Albion 3-1 Southend United
Southend’s five-match unbeaten run came to an end when they were overcome by Burton, who moved into the top half of the table.
Tony James has a hamstring problem and wasn’t in Burton’s squad.
Southend were without Peter Gilbert due to suspension.
Chesterfield 1-0 Torquay United
Chesterfield moved back to the top of the table after beating Torquay.
Craig Davies didn’t recover from injury in time for this game.

Gillingham are just showing off now. This was their third consecutive away league win. They’re only a point behind Macclesfield now.
Sam Wedgbury was on the bench for Macclesfield.

FA Cup Results 27th November 2010 (Part 1)
Burton Albion 3-1 Chesterfield
In the league, Chesterfield are on top while Burton (like every other team in League Two) are further down. But Cup matches can go either way even when the two sides involved are in different divisions so this probably shouldn’t really be a surprise. Even though it is. Burton’s next opponents are struggling Championship side Middlesbrough.
Tony James was on the bench for Burton. I like to think he was rested but the truth is he isn’t really first-choice anymore.
Craig Davies didn’t have the best day. After spending the first half being booed by the Burton supporters (he was born in Burton which was hardly his fault, I blame the parents), he then suffered a hamstring injury. Chesterfield aren’t sure how serious it is but they seem pretty hopeful.
Bury 1-2 Peterborough United
Bury killed one giant in the first round but Peterborough were just a little bit too much for them in the second. Next time, Peterborough could be the giant-killers as they face Fulham.
Loanee Owain fon Williams was in goal for Bury. His loan runs out at the end of December but he’s not sure what will happen then.
Arron Davies was a substitute but he didn’t come on until the 94th minute so he might not have actually kicked the ball or anything like that. Despite being left on the bench, Arron believes manager Gary Johnson will take Peterborough back into the Championship.
Lewin Nyatanga was not given permission to play in this match by parent club Bristol City but most reports suggested his loan had already come to an end by the time this match came around. But he’s definitely back at Bristol City now.

Tamworth will feel disappointed to go out but the non-league side played well and didn’t look like minnows. Not that I’ve ever seen a footballer who does. The score was 2-2 with minutes still to play and it looked as though Tamworth had forced a replay but then Carlisle scored which spoiled things a bit. Carlisle will need to up their game just slightly when they face League Two Torquay United.

Swindon Supermarines bowed out of the FA Cup after another great performance against one of the best teams (according to League place) in the competition. They couldn’t quite equalise but they must have given Colchester’s players a few scares. Colchester’s next opponents are a few more stops down the train line from Swindon – Swansea City.
Lee Beevers and Lloyd James were unused substitutes for Colchester.

FA Cup Fixtures 27th November 2010 (Part 1)
AFC Wimbledon v Stevenage
AFC Wimbledon would have played MK Dons if they’d managed to beat Stevenage in the replay – but MK Dons just weren’t good enough.
AFC Wimbledon’s Reece Jones missed out in the last round as he was on loan at Lewes and it looks like he’s still there.
Burton Albion v Chesterfield
The last time these two teams faced one another, Burton got their first away win of the season. In theory, it should be even easier at home.
Tony James could be back in the starting line-up after being dropped to the bench in Burton’s last game – he’s on standby to replace an injured player.

Bury have already knocked Exeter City out of the Cup. Now they face an off-form Peterborough.

League Two Results 13th November 2010 (Part 1)
Bury 0-1 Stockport County
BBC Sport described this as a shock win over Stockport but I’m not so sure. Bury have been doing well lately but they were forced to play without their goalkeeper, Owain fon Williams, as he is on loan from Stockport.
Robbie Williams (not the famous one, by which I mean not the one at Altrincham who played for Wales) is credited with the assist for Stockport’s goal but it sounds like Anthony Pulis’ free kick was a very important part of it.
Chesterfield 1-2 Burton Albion
Chesterfield lost at home for the first time this season while Burton won away for the first time. But Chesterfield are still top of the table so things aren’t too bad.
Craig Davies didn’t score for what I believe is the second time in three matches. But I don’t think that’s anything to worry about.
Tony James was in Burton’s starting line-up. Tony says he’s happy to have found himself again after being lost on the bench.
Gillingham 1-3 Crewe Alexandra
Gillingham lost again even though they need all the home points they can get but the manager was happy. Why? Because he had 12-14 players out through injury or suspension. Manager Andy Hessenthaler used to be a footballer so I think we can forgive him for having trouble with counting to fourteen.
Rhys Taylor was in goal for Crewe after recovering from an ankle injury (it seems to be Goalkeeper Injury Curse month – Rhys, Danny Coyne, Lewis Price and Tony Roberts have all been injured) and his presence was probably another reason why Gillingham lost. He did actually do them a big favour at one point but luckily Gillingham didn’t score.
Hereford United 1-1 Cheltenham Town
It’s a bit unfair when you’re unbeaten in six whole games and you’re still in the bottom two. Even if you do have an aversion to winning at home. But Hereford are only there on goal difference and if they can win the next game they should move ahead of Gillingham who are playing away.
Right back Ryan Green has been playing in central defence for Hereford and he says he likes it which is always good. He and Ryan Valentine played the full match for Cheltenham but Stuart Fleetwood was suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season.
Josh Low played the full match for Cheltenham. He thinks Cheltenham are playing a bit like Spain.
BBC Sport described this as a shock win over Stockport but I’m not so sure. Bury have been doing well lately but they were forced to play without their goalkeeper, Owain fon Williams, as he is on loan from Stockport.
Robbie Williams (not the famous one, by which I mean not the one at Altrincham who played for Wales) is credited with the assist for Stockport’s goal but it sounds like Anthony Pulis’ free kick was a very important part of it.
Chesterfield 1-2 Burton Albion
Chesterfield lost at home for the first time this season while Burton won away for the first time. But Chesterfield are still top of the table so things aren’t too bad.
Craig Davies didn’t score for what I believe is the second time in three matches. But I don’t think that’s anything to worry about.
Tony James was in Burton’s starting line-up. Tony says he’s happy to have found himself again after being lost on the bench.
Gillingham 1-3 Crewe Alexandra
Gillingham lost again even though they need all the home points they can get but the manager was happy. Why? Because he had 12-14 players out through injury or suspension. Manager Andy Hessenthaler used to be a footballer so I think we can forgive him for having trouble with counting to fourteen.
Rhys Taylor was in goal for Crewe after recovering from an ankle injury (it seems to be Goalkeeper Injury Curse month – Rhys, Danny Coyne, Lewis Price and Tony Roberts have all been injured) and his presence was probably another reason why Gillingham lost. He did actually do them a big favour at one point but luckily Gillingham didn’t score.
Hereford United 1-1 Cheltenham Town
It’s a bit unfair when you’re unbeaten in six whole games and you’re still in the bottom two. Even if you do have an aversion to winning at home. But Hereford are only there on goal difference and if they can win the next game they should move ahead of Gillingham who are playing away.

FA Cup Fixtures 6th November 2010 (Part 4)
Hereford United v Hythe Town
Hereford really have lost Tony James this time but parent club Burton Albion probably wouldn’t have allowed him to play anyway. Stuart Fleetwood will hope for the start he should have got two matches ago and maybe Ryan Green and/or Ryan Valentine will be in line for a rest.
Macclesfield Town v Southend United
Sam Wedgbury will hope for another start for Macclesfield.

He was originally suspended for their match against Cheltenham Town but then he got updates from his team-mates telling him the floodlights have gone. Welsh Player News 4th November 2010 (League Two)
Charlton Athletic manager Phil Parkinson believes that his former player Grant Basey, currently on loan at Barnet, still has a great future ahead of him.

Cheltenham Town A-A Southend United
Cheltenham were leading 1-0 when the match was abandoned due to floodlight failure.
Josh Low got the assist for Cheltehnam's goal so he's probably a bit annoyed it won't count.
He won't be as annoyed as Southend's Peter Gilbert though. He picked up his second yellow card at the weekend and he didn't mind missing this match if it meant he could play in the FA Cup the following weekend. But suspensions only count if the match is completed and this one wasn't/

Hereford’s search for a home win continues after a draw with Aldershot.
Stuart Fleetwood did a pretty good job coming off the bench in the last two games, first scoring two goals for his side, then one. Unfortunately the pattern continued and he ended up scoring none in this game. How many will he score next week, minus one? It’s possible, he could score a disallowed goal.
Tony James played his final game on loan at Hereford but was substituted in thr 45th minute due to injury which really messes up Burton Albion’s plans. Ryan Green and Ryan Valentine also played.
Aldershot decided not to appeal against Darren Jones’ red card so he missed this match. And there’s a lot to be said for missing a match against a former club where the supporters might be just a little bit annoyed with you.
Aaron Morris took Darren’s place in central defence and helped them to get a point
Lincoln Cirt 0-2 Northampton Town
Northampton win their second game in succession but if there is such thing as an easy game, at this or any other level, a home match against Gillingham (whose away form has been well-documented) and any match against Lincoln (who have only won one of their last nine games) could be included in this description. But three points is three points (especially at the wrong end of the table, where three points can seem like six) and it will hopefully give Northampton a bit more confidence to push up the table.
Paul Walker was on the bench for Northampton.

Stockport suffered their second successive defeat to a struggling side when Morecambe thrashed them 5-0. Although to be fair to Morecambe, it doesn’t look like they did much struggling in this match.

I thought Tony James would be back at Burton for this match but I messed up, he wasn’t, he was still at loan club Hereford United. Burton decided not to let Burton extend his loan because they need Tony to cover for injuries. Small problem: Tony has a thigh injury.
Port Vale seem to have forgotten how to win away. It’s a shame they’ve already played their home tie with Gillingham really.

When I looked for Bradford in the League Two table, it took me ages to find them. I wasn’t looking high up enough. They’re now up to tenth after beating third-placed Bury.
Owain fon Williams conceded a penalty for fouling Bradford’s Jason Price. The penalty was scored (although not by Jason) which gave Bradford the win. But that’s good. It means Stockport County will be less likely to want Owain back and he can stay with his third-placed team instead of going back to his 21st-placed team.

Accrington are still without an away win this season after Chesterfield;s unbeaten home record continues.
Craig Davies returned to his goalscoring duties with a bang, scoring Chesterfield’s first and last goals, as well as getting the assist for the fourth. Chesterfield fans might have preferred it if he’d used one of his goals or assists for the previous match instead and got six points instead of four but you can’t have everything. Not even when you’re at the top of the league.

League Two Results 30th October 2010 (Part 2)
Southend United 1-0 Rotherham United
Southend won for the first time in three matches with an excellent win over promotion hopefuls Rotherham.
Peter Gilbert got his fifth yellow card of the season for Southend.
Mark Bradley was back on the bench for Rotherham.
Stevenage 0-0 Chesterfield
Chesterfield have been going well so some would have been surprised to see them drop points against league newcomers Stevenage. But it extends their unbeaten run to six games and Port Vale couldn’t quite knock them off the top of the table.
Craig Davies had a break from scoring for Chesterfield. Unfortunately, so did the other strikers.
Stockport County 0-5 Hereford United
Being thrashed 5-0 at home would have been bad enough if they were playing Chesterfield. When it’s Hereford United, a team who were at this stage still in the bottom two, it’s just embarrassing. No disrespect intended to the goalkeeper but maybe Stockport are beginning to regret sending Owain fon Williams on loan to a team in the top three.
Anthony Pulis played 90 minutes for Stockport.

League Two Results 16th October 2010 (Part 1)
Accrington Stanley 2-3 Rotherham United
Accrington’s unbeaten home record ended with a stoppage-time goal from Rotherham.
Mark Bradley wasn’t very impressed with his first start for Rotherham so let’s hope this one met with his approval.
Aldershot Town 2-1 Morecambe
Both sides will have been disappointed with their start to the season after being in the play-offs last season but whilst Morecambe are still uncomfortably close to the bottom of the table, Aldershot’s win puts them in seventh place, very much in the play-off race. And even Morecambe are only five points away.
Darren Jones played well for Aldershot but Aaron Morris didn’t. It’s impossible to play well when the manager leaves you on the bench.

It looked like Bradford were getting back to their own selves when they went 1-0 down after seven minutes. However, the good thing about early goals is that there’s plenty of time to turn things around and struggling Bradford scored three times to beat play-off hopefuls Cheltenham.
Jason Price made a good start to life at Bradford City. The striker, who has just joined from Carlisle United on loan, only came off the bench at half-time but he knew his team-mates well enough to provide the assist for the second goal. (It would have been even better if he’d actually scored the second goal, not to mention the third, but you can’t have everything.)

Hereford did what Liverpool couldn’t when they beat Northampton 3-4. It’s particularly impressive considering Hereford let Northampton have a three-goal start:
But then Stuart Fleetwood came off the bench for Hereford and scored two goals. Two more duly followed and Hereford took all three points.

Hereford did what Liverpool couldn’t when they beat Northampton 3-4. It’s particularly impressive considering Hereford let Northampton have a three-goal start:
But then Stuart Fleetwood came off the bench for Hereford and scored two goals. Two more duly followed and Hereford took all three points.
Paul Walker was on the bench for Northampton.
Ryan Green, Ryan Valentine and Tony James played in defence for Hereford and kept a clean sheet in the second half. Ryan G managed to get a Northampton player sent off when his prone figure somehow incited his opponent to throw the ball of them while Ryan V did his bit to prevent Northampton’s opening goal from coming a lot sooner than it did.

League Two Fixtures 16th October 2010 Part 1
Accrington Stanley v Rotherham United
Mark Bradley will hope for a fourth consecutive start for Rotherham.
Aldershot Town v Morecambe
Darren Jones should keep his place in defence for Aldershot. Aaron Morris has a chance of returning to the starting line-up due to the suspension of team-mate Jamie Vincent.
As for Morecambe’s Darren Moss, I’ve heard nothing but rumours.
Bradford City v Cheltenham Town
Jason Price is likely to sit on the bench for his first match as a Bradford loanee but maybe he’ll get to come off the bench and score a winning goal. Michael Flynn (groin) probably won’t be fit enough to play for Bradford.
Josh Low should play in midfield for Cheltenham.
Macclesfield Town v Oxford United
Sam Wedgbury is probably more likely to be on the bench for Macclesfield.
Rhys Day won’t play for Oxford as he’s joined Mansfield Town on loan.

League Two Results 9th October 2010 Part 2
Hereford United 1-1 Port Vale
It was bottom v top and Port Vale had until this match only lost one away game. Hereford’s losses included seven games and their manager Simon Davey so this wasn’t a bad result at all. Hereford will be disappointed after missing a penalty, while Port Vale had an offside goal ruled out but as Hereford went down to ten men after just 25 minutes, maybe the overriding emotion is relief.
Hereford’s physiotherapist took charge of this match – they might be off-form but Hereford are very much on-trend.
Ryan Green returned from illness to play in defence for Hereford alongside Ryan Valentine and loanee Tony James. Stuart Fleetwood missed out with a back injury.
Gareth Owen played in defence for Port Vale.
Lincoln City 2-1 Macclesfield Town
Lincoln climb out of the bottom two after beating Macclesfield.
Sam Wedgbury made a late substitute appearance for Macclesfield.

Morecambe got their first home win of the season with victory over Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury remain in the play-off places despite a fifth consecutive match without a win.
Tom Bradshaw has done more than his fair share of supersub goal-scoring exploits so no-one can blame the teenager for not doing the business for Shrewsbury this time.
Oxford United 0-1 Aldershot Town
Aldershot’s victory lifts then above Oxford, who spent more than half the match with just ten men on the field.
Injured defender Rhys Day, now at Oxford, missed the chance to play against his former side.

Bradford hadn’t won their last four matches in all competitions so they’d have been glad to get three points in this match, even if they were only playing Barnet. The win was their first of the season at a ground other than their own and it meant Barnet took their place in the bottom two.
Grant Basey started for Barnet but left the field after 47 minutes due to an ankle injury.
Michael Flynn made his return from a groin injury in Bradford’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to Hartlepool United but then (as if losing to Hartlepool wasn’t bad enough) he suffered a reaction and was forced to miss this game.
Burton Albion 1-2 Wycombe Wanderers
Going into this match, Wycombe hadn’t lose away while Burton hadn’t won at home. So a draw looked the most likely result but instead it was Burton’s unbeaten run which came to an end.
With Tony James on loan at Hereford United and Garyn Preen unselected, this tie wasn’t nearly as Welsh as it has been.

Chesterfield 2-1 Southend United
Chesterfield keep their unbeaten home record intact as they beat Southend. The match looked like it was going to finish as a draw but a stoppage-time Chesterfield winner put paid to any ideas from Southend about sharing the points.
Chesterfield’s victory could have been greater without the disallowed goals, including one from Craig Davies. It’s not often a match passes without Craig either scoring or getting an assist. And in a way, he got both. He won the penalty that became the opening goal.
Peter Gilbert played the full match for Southend and could have got an own goal but luckily his deflection took the shot away from the goal. Nathaniel Jarvis made a 79th-minute substitute appearance and nearly got his first goal. Nathaniel’s would have been in the right net though.
Crewe Alexandra 3-3 Torquay United
Another goal-fest for Crewe, who are unbeaten in nine League matches – although only two of those matches were wins. Torquay probably still remember their record-breaking run of games without defeat – but it probably seems like a long time ago. Their run of matches without a win is now nearly as long.
Rhys Taylor was on goal for Crewe.
Gillingham 2-1 Stockport County
Gillingham won this time but maybe Stockport can win when they host Gillingham. Neither seem to be particularly good at winning away games this season. Not that they were that great at it last season either.
Anthony Pulis made his debut on loan for Stockport County and if you ignore the fact they didn’t actually win, it was a good game for him. He was the one who scored Stockport’s goal. Owain fon Williams was on the bench.

Welsh Player News 5th October 2010 (League Two)
Michael Flynn should make his return from a groin injury in Bradford City’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy match against Hartlepool United.
Crewe Alexandra’s former No. 1 goalkeeper Steve Phillips is fit again – but Rhys Taylor isn’t giving up his place in the team as easily as all that.
Hereford United manager Simon Davey has been sacked, as predicted by one of my favourite blogs. He has been with Hereford for ten games and they’ve won one of them.
Tony James has re-signed for Hereford United on loan from Burton Albion. Great news for Hereford (and it could result in a back four which is 75% Welsh) but are you sure that’s a good idea, Burton?
