Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 Peterborough United
Brighton won for the fourth successive match which probably wasn’t what Darren Ferguson was hoping for when he returned to manager Peterborough. An away win over Brighton would have been quite an achievement. No team has managed it in the league this season.
Arron Davies wasn’t in Peterborough’s squad.
Carlisle United 4-0 Bristol Rovers
Bristol Rovers’ long run without a win continued as Carlisle’s own winless run was ended in em[hatic style.
Jason Price wasn’t in Carlisle’s squad due to an Achilles injury.
Ben Swallow started for Bristol Rovers but Byron Anthony was still recovering from food poisoning and didn’t start. He was the player who replaced Ben. Eliot Richards was an unused substitute.
Hartlepool United 0-1 Dagenham & Redbridge
Dagenham & Redbridge got their third away win of the season while Hartlepool lost for the third consecutive match.
Tony Roberts kept a clean sheet for Dag & Red.
Milton Keynes Dons 2-0 Tranmere Rovers
MK Dons moved into the play-off places with victory over Tranmere, who are only out of the bottom four on goal difference.
Ash Taylor kept his place in Tranmere’s starting line-up.
Plymouth Argyle 0-2 Oldham Athletic
Oldham are now only a point behind the play-offs after this result.but Plymouth were starting to look over their shoulders again.
Carl Fletcher played the full match for Plymouth.
Rochdale 1-1 Leyton Orient
This game went ahead despite adverse weather conditions and arguably shouldn’t have happened at all. Rochdale scored first and it was the Rochdale manager who seemed to feel strongly that this match should have been abandoned. But I’m sure that’s just a coincidence.
Nicky Adams started for Rochdale and really got Leyton Orient worried but he was replaced by Matt Done after suffering an ankle injury.
Southampton 0-0 Notts County
Notts County brought to an end a run of five consecutive wins for Southampton – including a 6-0 thrashing of Oldham Athletic and an FA Cup victory over Premier League Blackpool.
Ryan Doble was on the bench for Southampton.
Ben Davies played the full match for Notts County.
Swindon Town 0-1 Yeovil Town
Yeovil keep their survival hopes alive with an excellent away win over Swindon Town. Yeovil remain in the bottom three only on goal difference while Swindon are just two points ahead.
Nathan Jones was on the bench for Yeovil.
Walsall 2-4 Huddersfield Town
Walsall matched Huddersfield for much of the game but unfortunately football matches last longer than 76 minutes and Huddersfield scored two late goals. If Walsall had managed to hang on (without scoring a winner), it would have been their first home draw of the season.
Sean Geddes was on the bench for Walsall.

League One Fixtures 15th January 2011 (Part 1)
Brighton & Hove Albion v Peterborough United
Brighton need to draw to be sure of keeping their place at the top of the League One table. Peterborough, meanwhile, need a point in order to remain in the play-off places but I doubt either team will want to settle for a draw. Manager Darren Ferguson is back at Peterborough United fourteen months after they sacked him. Don’t be surprised if a few young Manchester United players end up joining him.
Arron Davies faces a former club in rather unusual circumstances. At the beginning of the season, he was at Nottingham Forest and was loaned out to Brighton. When Forest released him in December, he decided to join former Yeovil Town but this was against the rules because he’d already played for two clubs. So Arron became a Brighton player again on non-contract terms and was loaned out to Yeovil. The expectation was that he’d sign permanently for Yeovil in the summer but he decided that the thing that made Yeovil so wonderful wasn’t the place, it was his old manager there. The manager was in question was Gary Johnson who was at Peterborough so Arron signed for Peterborough. Last week, Gary Johnson left the club by mutual consent. So who knows what will happen next?

Carlisle are only six points from the play-offs, which certainly isn’t insurmountable considering they have between one and three games in hand over most teams. But they’re just five points from the relegation places – it’s that close. If Bristol Rovers win, they will probably still be in the bottom four but only on goal difference. And if they win by three goals and Tranmere lose by three goals, they’ll be out of the relegation places altogether. Bristol Rovers just need to remember how to win, that’s all. Let’s hope they’ve got long memories. They haven’t won in the league since October. Carlisle however might have some sympathy – they haven’t won in any competition since November 30th.
Jason Price is back at Carlisle after choosing not to remain at Bradford City on loan. He believes he can help Carlisle get their season back on track. But only if he can get into the team. So maybe he’s better off going out on loan again.

Loanee Kayleden Brown has returned to West Bromwich Albion after his loan spell came to an end. He’s missed the last three matches due to injury.

MK Dons are just a point outside the play-offs and their home record is very good. Tranmere might struggle to get the point they need to be absolutely sure they won’t be spending the week in the bottom four.
MK Dons have just sold Jermaine Easter to Crystal Palace so he won’t be playing for them again anytime soon.

League One Results 11th January 2011
Bristol Rovers 2-2 Walsall
A point was enough to lift Walsall off the bottom of the table while Bristol Rovers are now just three points from safety – but they really needed a bit more than one point.
Byron Anthony was missing from Bristol Rovers’ squad due to illness. He has food poisoning, poor boy. I want to give him a hug… from a distance. Ben Swallow and Eliot Richards both started but manager Dave Penney says Bristol Rovers need another striker bue he thinks Eliot is too young.
Huddersfield Town 3-2 Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth were 2-0 up after 15 minutes, despite being down to 9 men, but Huddersfield worked together to ensure they didn’t score anymore. A second red card for Plymouth early in the second half probably helped a bit too..
Carl Fletcher played the full match for Plymouth. He was booked for applauding the referee, which is a new one. I wonder if that would count as dissent, unsporting behaviour or time-wasting. I would say it is more the first two but that the third is easier to prove. A player could argue that applause is usually a gesture of agreement or support but not that it doesn’t delay the restart.

Peterborough needed a stoppage time goal in order to beat Brentford but that’s not bad at all for a team who have just lost their manager. The win put Peterborough into the play-off places, having played one or more games fewer than the teams immediately above them.
Arron Davies apparently went to Peterborough because he liked the manager. He wasn’t in the squad for this match.

A win for either club won’t be enough to lift them out of the bottom four although Bristol Rovers would be just a point from safety, despite not having won a league game since the middle of October. For Walsall, the situation is more worrying. They are eight points from safety and without Bristol Rovers’ luxury of a game in hand.
Byron Anthony was staying positive – in a way – at the end of 2010, claiming Bristol Rovers were in a false position. It’s not clear whether this is still his opinion now but he’s almost certain to be given a place in the starting line-up – and the chance to put things right. Ben Swallow and Eliot Richards should also be in the squad.
Sean Geddes could be on the bench for Walsall.
Huddersfield Town v Plymouth Argyle

Fa Cup Fixtures 8th January 2011 (Part 3)
Doncaster Rovers v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Doncaster have only played Wolves six times but at least four of them must have been in the last two seasons. Doncaster are unbeaten in three matches and their last home defeat was in mid-October.
John Oster and Brian Stock should start for Doncaster.
Wayne Hennessey is expected to be rested. Dave Edwards is hoping for a run in the team but he could be rested too – although this would give David Jones a chance of coming into the side. Sam Vokes is still out with his hamstring injury.
Fulham v Peterborough United
Fulham are having striker problems again. They face Peterborough, who have apparently spent only one season in the same division as them.
Fulham could rest former Peterborough player Simon Davies, who has long-term ankle problems.
Arron Davies (no relation as far as I know) will hope to start for Peterborough.
Huddersfield Town v Dover Athletic
Dover are the lowest-ranked team left in the FA Cup. They scored six against Macclesfield Town in the last round and seven against Thurrock in their last match but Huddersfield are probably better than Macclesfield and Thurrock. They’ll hope so anyway. But they’re not taking any chances: they are expected to name a full-strength team.
Adam Birchall has scored eleven FA Cup goals so far this season. He’s so happy to be back in love with football again but he still dreams of being back in the Premier League one day. As for the FA Cup match, Dover can do it again.
Lincoln City v Hereford Town
Two of League Two’s strugglers meet in this match.
Ryan Valentine (stomach) remains out for Hereford but Ryan Green should start and Stuart Fleetwood certainly deserves to. Stuart feels Hereford can get to the fourth round.
Millwall v Birmingham City
Millwall’s season in the Championship is going better than many predicted (and worse than I predicted, I said they’d get promoted but I only said that to make my dad happy) – they are unbeaten in the last eight matches. Birmingham are perhaps struggling a bit more than most people expected. They’re unbeaten in one.
Steve Morison should play for Millwall but I’m hoping he won’t do anything too brilliant until the transfer window has closed and he’s still safely at Millwall. A hat-trick should be just about okay but four goals will be pushing it.

Welsh Players Christmas-New Year matches 2010-11 (League One, Part 2)
Exeter City
Richard Duffy got an assist in Exeter’s shock thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday but the cold weather meant they didn’t play again for the rest of the year. And when they did play again, they’d forgotten how to thrash top teams.

Rob Edwards seemed to have a Christmas break from playing but no doubt he was still there in a coaching capacity.

FA Cup Results 27th November 2010 (Part 1)
Burton Albion 3-1 Chesterfield
In the league, Chesterfield are on top while Burton (like every other team in League Two) are further down. But Cup matches can go either way even when the two sides involved are in different divisions so this probably shouldn’t really be a surprise. Even though it is. Burton’s next opponents are struggling Championship side Middlesbrough.
Tony James was on the bench for Burton. I like to think he was rested but the truth is he isn’t really first-choice anymore.
Craig Davies didn’t have the best day. After spending the first half being booed by the Burton supporters (he was born in Burton which was hardly his fault, I blame the parents), he then suffered a hamstring injury. Chesterfield aren’t sure how serious it is but they seem pretty hopeful.
Bury 1-2 Peterborough United
Bury killed one giant in the first round but Peterborough were just a little bit too much for them in the second. Next time, Peterborough could be the giant-killers as they face Fulham.
Loanee Owain fon Williams was in goal for Bury. His loan runs out at the end of December but he’s not sure what will happen then.
Arron Davies was a substitute but he didn’t come on until the 94th minute so he might not have actually kicked the ball or anything like that. Despite being left on the bench, Arron believes manager Gary Johnson will take Peterborough back into the Championship.

Tamworth will feel disappointed to go out but the non-league side played well and didn’t look like minnows. Not that I’ve ever seen a footballer who does. The score was 2-2 with minutes still to play and it looked as though Tamworth had forced a replay but then Carlisle scored which spoiled things a bit. Carlisle will need to up their game just slightly when they face League Two Torquay United.

Swindon Supermarines bowed out of the FA Cup after another great performance against one of the best teams (according to League place) in the competition. They couldn’t quite equalise but they must have given Colchester’s players a few scares. Colchester’s next opponents are a few more stops down the train line from Swindon – Swansea City.
Lee Beevers and Lloyd James were unused substitutes for Colchester.

Two former League sides battled for the right to face a Premier League side in the third round and it was York who went through, with Bolton Wanderers their reward.
Danny Parslow missed out for York after suffering from larynx damage which is an unusual one for a footballer but as an ex-singer I can tell you it can be pretty bad. Levi Mackin is being brought back slowly from a knee problem and wasn’t in the squad for this match even though he did feature in the last round.
In the league, Chesterfield are on top while Burton (like every other team in League Two) are further down. But Cup matches can go either way even when the two sides involved are in different divisions so this probably shouldn’t really be a surprise. Even though it is. Burton’s next opponents are struggling Championship side Middlesbrough.
Tony James was on the bench for Burton. I like to think he was rested but the truth is he isn’t really first-choice anymore.
Craig Davies didn’t have the best day. After spending the first half being booed by the Burton supporters (he was born in Burton which was hardly his fault, I blame the parents), he then suffered a hamstring injury. Chesterfield aren’t sure how serious it is but they seem pretty hopeful.
Bury 1-2 Peterborough United
Bury killed one giant in the first round but Peterborough were just a little bit too much for them in the second. Next time, Peterborough could be the giant-killers as they face Fulham.
Loanee Owain fon Williams was in goal for Bury. His loan runs out at the end of December but he’s not sure what will happen then.
Arron Davies was a substitute but he didn’t come on until the 94th minute so he might not have actually kicked the ball or anything like that. Despite being left on the bench, Arron believes manager Gary Johnson will take Peterborough back into the Championship.

FA Cup Fixtures 27th November 2010 (Part 1)
AFC Wimbledon v Stevenage
AFC Wimbledon would have played MK Dons if they’d managed to beat Stevenage in the replay – but MK Dons just weren’t good enough.
AFC Wimbledon’s Reece Jones missed out in the last round as he was on loan at Lewes and it looks like he’s still there.

League One Results 20th November 2010 (Part 2)
Huddersfield Town 0-1 Exeter City
Exeter are only in 12th place but they are only two points behind the topsix – and one behind Huddersfield.
Richard Duffy scored Exeter’s goal with his head. Daniel Nardiello was a late substitute but Rob Edwards stayed on the bench.
Leyton Orient 2-2 Bournemouth
Orient came back from 2-0 down to snatch a point in the second minute of stoppage time.
Jason Brown made his first start for Orient, after joining on loan from Blackburn Rovers, who’d only just got him back from Leeds United. He let in two goals but he had no chance with at least one of them.
Rhoys Wiggins played the full match for Bournemouth.
Milton Keynes Dons 1-4 Sheffield Wednesday
MK Dons lost at home for the first time when they were thrashed 4-1 by Sheffield Wednesday. MK Dons took the lead in the 6th minute but it all went downhill from there.
Jermaine Easter was again absent for MK Dons due to a thigh injury.
Notts County 0-1 Tranmere Rovers
Notts County are in the bottom four, three points behind Plymouth Argyle, after losing to Tranmere, who are now six points clear of trouble.
Ben Davies could have got a couple of goals for Notts County.
Ash Taylor made a surprise appearance on the bench for Tranmere. It was his first appearance in a Tranmere squad this season since having a knee operation in the summer.
Plymouth Argyle 1-2 Brentford
Brentford continue to improve as Plymouth go the other way.Another defeat and they could be in the bottom four – but only if Notts County win.
Carl Fletcher is still out with a leg injury.
Rochdale 3-3 Swindon Town
Swindon must have been feeling all hopeful after first they equalised and then, two minutes later, went ahead. But Rochdale scored five minutes later and the points were shared.
Nicky Adams started for Rochdale. Matt Done was on the bench.
Southampton 4-1 Peterborough United
Football doesn’t have wheels even when things are going well but if Peterborough did have wheels, perhaps they really would be coming off. It’s their second consecutive thrashing and they’re down to 11th, if only two points from the play-offs.

Walsall 2-1 Carlisle United
Walsall got a very welcome three points when they came from behind to beat play-off hopefuls Carlisle.
Sean Geddes was on the bench for Walsall.

League One Results 13th November 2010 (Part 1)
Bournemouth 3-0 Walsall
Bournemouth’s excellent home record continues as they beat bottom club Walsall and moved into third place.
Rhoys Wiggins got the assist for Bournemouth’s second goal.
Sean Geddes was back on the bench for Walsall but he has been earning his money lately, playing a part in Rotherham’s reserves beat Walsall’s reserves 7-0.
Brentford 0-2 Milton Keynes Dons
MK Dons’ away record was looking pretty good after the first game of the season but it took them until Saturday to find their second away win.
Poor MK Dons striker Jermaine Easter missed the whole thing due to a thigh injury after failing a late fitness test.
Bristol Rovers 0-3 Leyton Orient
Leyton Orient went into this match without an away win to their names but when it finally came, they made sure it was a good one.
Byron Anthony played the full match for Bristol Rovers but perhaps he was a little optimistic in his claims that Bristol Rovers would manage just fine without leading scorer Will Hoskins. Eliot Richards was a 58th minute susbstitute while Ben Swallow played on the bench.

Exeter ended a run of three defeats with victory over Notts County, who drop into the bottom three.
Richard Duffy was the only Welshman to start for Notts County but that didn’t seem to do Exeter any harm. Rob Edwards and Daniel Nardiello were on the bench. First team coach Rob will be very happy with his young team-mates.
A Ben Davies free kick provided the assist for Notts County’s goal.

Oldham keep their unbeaten home record intact with victory over Huddersfield, who remain in the play-offs despite the defeat.

FA Cup Results 6th November 2010 (Part 4)
Rotherham United 0-0 York City
Blue Square Premier side York managed to force a replay against League Two local rivals Rotherham.
Mark Bradley missed out for Rotherham due to a hip injury.
Alex Lawless and Danny Parslow both played the full match for York. But Alex won’t be in the replay as he has joined Luton Town on loan. The loan will be made permanent in January.
Rushden & Diamonds 0-1 Yeovil Town
Yeovil have struggled in the league this season but they did enough to progress to the second round of the FA Cup – although there was an element of controversy about their goal.
Nathan Jones played for Yeovil with loanees Shaun MacDonald and Owain Tudur Jones in midfield. Gavin Williams wasn’t given permission to play by his parent club.

FA Cup Fixtures 6th November 2010 (Part 6)
Stockport County v Peterborough United
Southampton have given Anthony Pulis permission to play for Stockport. Stockport also have a young Welsh striker called Craig Roberts who appeared in the squad on a few occasions last season. Most people seem to have forgotten about him but I haven’t.
Bristol City have not given Peterborough permission to play Lewin Nyatanga in the FA Cup but they still have Arron Davies, who practically won their last match for them.

Chelsea have said Rhys Taylor can play for Crewe in the FA Cup.
Southampton have given Anthony Pulis permission to play for Stockport. Stockport also have a young Welsh striker called Craig Roberts who appeared in the squad on a few occasions last season. Most people seem to have forgotten about him but I haven’t.
Bristol City have not given Peterborough permission to play Lewin Nyatanga in the FA Cup but they still have Arron Davies, who practically won their last match for them.
Tamworth v Crewe Alexandra
Scott Barrow could play for Tamworth.
Chelsea have said Rhys Taylor can play for Crewe in the FA Cup.

Welsh Player News 4th November 2010 (League One)
Young Bournemouth midfielder Joe Partington has joined Eastbourne Borough on loan.
Exeter City’s Rob Edwards feel they need to tighten up in defence. Maybe they should pick you then, Rob.
Arron Davies approves of Peterborough United’s new formation and he thinks their win over Walsall banished memories of losing to Brighton. I don’t really think there’s anything so bad about losing to a team who are eight points clear at the top of the league and maybe beating the bottom side isn’t necessarily much of a reason to celebrate but as long as he’s happy.
Gavin Williams hasn’t done a bad job since signing for Yeovil Town on loan again. But he says his best is yet to come. Gavin doesn’t think he’ll be playing for Wales again but he believes fellow Welsh loanees Shaun MacDonald and Owain Tudur Jones will win more caps.

League One Results 2nd November 2010 (Part 2)
Plymouth Argyle 3-1 Bristol Rovers
Bristol Rovers lost the match but the manager felt they played well enough to win. He believes if they keep playing like that, they will win matches.
It was thought that Carl Fletcher would return for an ankle injury due to necessity rather than because he’d actually recovered or anything like that but luckily the other injured players recovered just in time and Carl didn’t even have to sit on the bench.
Byron Anthony played the full match for Bristol Rovers while Ben Swallow made only his second substitute appearance of the season. Eliot Richards stayed on the bench.
Southampton 4-0 Dagenham & Redbridge
Dag & Red’s evening got off to a bad start when goalkeeper Tony Roberts was forced to withdraw due to injury . Notts County 1-3 Southampton
Notts County took the lead after nine minutes but the improving Southampton fought back to win by two clear goals and move into the top six.

Oldham Athletic 4-2 Plymouth Argyle
Oldham remain unbeaten at home after coming from behind to beat Plymouth, who had not one but two players sent off.
Scoring twice in a reserve game was probably part of the reason why Joe Jacobson was back on the bench for Oldham.
Carl Fletcher hadn’t trained in the run-up to this game so it was no surprise that he was omitted from Plymouth’s squad.

Peterborough have had a good season but it’s not quite as good as Brighton’s. Brighton are now unbeaten in ten – they have only lost once this season - and eight points clear at the top of the table. Despite what looked like a comprehensive victory, Brighton manager Gus Poyet felt Peterborough’s goalkeeper Joe Lewis was the Man of the Match.

Tranmere Rovers 4-2 Milton Keynes Dons
MK Dons manager felt the referee’s decisions had a big impact on the final result, claiming Tranmere’s third goal was offside and their penalty wasn’t a penalty. But his comments also suggested he had his doubts about MK Dons’ own penalty too.
Tranmere are still without the injured Ash Taylor but they still managed to win for once.
Jermaine Easter stayed on the bench for MK Dons but he still had his part to play. Instead of passing his team-mates the ball, he passed an illness to pretty much everyone in the squad.
Yeovil Town 3-3 Swindon Town
Swindon came back from 3-1 down, scoring two goals in as many minutes to share the points with Yeovil.

League One Fixtures 2nd November 2010 (Part 2)
Plymouth Argyle v Bristol Rovers
Plymouth are only in the bottom four on goal difference but Bristol Rovers never do what you expect so Plymouth will fancy their chances. I won’t say how many of their last five matches Plymouth have won. There’s a Plymouth fan who reads my blog and I don’t want to put him off coming back.
Carl Fletcher could return to Plymouth’s starting line-up for this match. Not that he’s fit or anything, his ankle is still dodgy but Plymouth are desperate. Not as desperate as MK Dons but they are a bit short of players.
Byron Anthony will start for Bristol Rovers. Ben Swallow could get his first start of the season after playing well for the reserves. Eliot Richards will probably be on the bench.
Rochdale v Oldham Athletic
Rochdale and Oldham have identical away records. I’ve got a feeling this will no longer be the case after this match. Rochdale are three points from the play-offs… and three points from the relegation zone. That could change too.
Nicky Adams will hope to keep his place in Rochdale’s starting line-up. Matt Done hasn’t been in the starting line-up since Nicky arrived.
Joe Jacobson could be on the bench again for Oldham.

Brentford 2-1 Peterborough United
Brentford climbed out of the bottom three with an excellent win over third-placed Peterborough.
Arron Davies played 58 minutes for Peterborough
Brighton 2-0 Yeovil Town
Owain Tudur Jones and Gavin Williams played the full match for Yeovil but they weren’t able to do anything much against League One’s top club. Nathan Jones and Rhys Baggridge were both on the bench but Shaun MacDonald missed out due to illness.
Colchester United 2-1 Notts County
Colchester’s Lee Beevers returned from a hand injury inn the 93rd minute. Lloyd James was on the bench.
Ben Davies played the full match for Notts County.

League One Results 16th October 2010 (Part 2)
Exeter City 2-1 Carlisle United
Exeter extended their unbeaten run to six games with victory over Carlisle, who are now only ahead of them on goal difference.
Rob Edwards was outstanding in the starting line-up for Exeter but even so, Carlisle could have scored another without the intervention of Richard Duffy. Daniel Nardiello was on the bench but only because Exeter are being careful with him. And it worked, as far as I know, Daniel didn’t pick up the smallest niggle during this game. Not even a splinter from sitting on the bench.

Notts County played the third of the three promoted sides and for the second time, they came away with three points.
After two whole matches without a goal or an assist, something was bound to happen. And it did: Ben Davies got an assist which helped Notts County to a deserved win over Plymouth.

Oldham Athletic 0-0 Colchester United
Oldham are unbeaten at home, Colchester aere unbeaten away. It was a bit predictable really. Colchester looked the stronger side at the start of the match but Oldham took control in the second half and looked the most likely to score. And they would have done if Colchester’s goalkeeper hadn’t been on such good form.
Joe Jacobson was absent from Oldham’s squad again but I don’t think he’s injured as he is featuring in reserve games.
Lloyd James was a half-time substitute for Colchester. This is only the second league match he’s appeared in this season. Not what I expected, I thought he’d be banging them in every three games and make Southampton look stupid for releasing him. But it’s not that easy when you play for a team that’s actually good.
Peterborough United 5-4 Swindon Town
When Peterborough went 3-0 up, it seemed obvious that they would win the game. When Swindon brought it back to 3-3, it became clear anything could happen. Unfortunately for Swindon, my first instincts were correct and Peterborough’s winning goal was scored by a Swindon player. Heartbreaking but both teams showed great spirit, Swindon by fighting back and Peterborough for not collapsing completely when Swindon drew level. Let’s not think about what they showed in other parts of the game.
Arron Davies started for Peterborough.
Billy Bodin wasn’t in Swindon’s squad.

The fact that these two teams are in the same division will be little consolation for Yeovil, who looked the stronger team for much of the game.
A stamp on Gavin Williams could have seen Sheffield Wednesday go down to ten men but in the end it wasn’t even a yellow. Gavin’s ankle injury continued to trouble him but he completed the match and was a great attacking threat for Yeovil, who didn’t deserve to lose, especially not by two goals. Shaun MacDonald and Owain Tudur Jones also played the full match.
