Exeter City
Richard Duffy got an assist in Exeter’s shock thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday but the cold weather meant they didn’t play again for the rest of the year. And when they did play again, they’d forgotten how to thrash top teams.
Sheff Wed H 5-1 (A1 29, played all)
Soton A 4-0 (played all)
Brighton H 1-2 (played all)
Rob Edwards seemed to have a Christmas break from playing but no doubt he was still there in a coaching capacity.
Sheff Wed H 5-1 (bench)
Soton A 4-0 (unselected)
Brighton H 1-2 (unselected)
Daniel Nardiello didn’t get any starts at all, despite coming off the bench to score in the penalty shoot-out win over Bristol Rovers in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy shortly before this round-up of results begins.
Sheff Wed H 5-1 (bench)
Soton A 4-0 (bench, on 55)
Brighton H 1-2 (bench, on 74)
Andy Marriott also didn’t play. No news yet on whether he has moved to West Bromwich Albion. (As a coach, I mean.)
Notts County
Ben Davies hadn’t got an assist since October – although he has scored once since then. But the long run finally came to an end against Hartlepool United.
Plymouth A 1-1 (played all)
Walsall A 0-3 (played all)
Hartlepool H 3-0 (A2 70, played all)
Oldham Athletic
Joe Jacobson is still on loan at Accrington Stanley.
Peterborough United
Arron Davies has been in and out of the starting line-up and this is exactly what happened in the two games Peterborough played over Christmas (or over the New Year, if you want to be accurate about it).
Swindon A 1-1 (bench)
Walsall H 4-1 (starts, off 79)
Plymouth Argyle
It took Carl Fletcher a long time to recover from his leg injury but now he’s back and Plymouth are unbeaten in four.
Notts Co H 1-1 (played all)
Yeovil H 0-0 (played all)
Bristol R A 2-3 (played all)
Rochdale
Nicky Adams has signed permanently for Rochdale following a successful loan spell. But he’s yet to start for his new club as he’s been recovering from injury.
Tranmere H 3-2 (out injury although I think his loan had ended and he was back at Brentford sorting out his move)
Oldham A 1-2 (bench, on 55)
Matt Done was probably quite glad to see the back of Nicky Adams as he finally got a start. But then Nicky came back and neither of them started.
Tranmere H 3-2 (starts, off 75)
Oldham A 1-2 (bench, on 61)

League One Fixture (and Postponements) 18th December 2010
Only one match in League One is going ahead today.
Bristol Rovers P-P Colchester United
Dagenham & Redbridge P-P Peterborough United
Exeter City v Sheffield Wednesday
It must be quite nice being the only team in League One with a playable pitch. I don’t know when the Sheffield Wednesday players left Sheffield or if they’ve actually got there in one piece but it’s difficult to imagine them getting home tonight.
Richard Duffy should start for Exeter after some good performances but he doesn’t think he’s quite at his best yet. Daniel Nardiello seems to start on alternate matches so it’s his turn to start this time. Rob Edwards will probably be on the bench. Rob says the club are excited to be playing at home again after a long run of away matches.
Goalkeeper and general manager Andy Marriott will leave Exeter to join West Bromwich Albion as assistant to the sporting and technical director. He’ll be missed but manager Paul Tisdale says the players and staff are thrilled for him.
Leyton Orient P-P Plymouth Argyle
This match would have been Jason Brown’s final game on loan at Leyton Orient although he is hoping to extend his loan spell.
Rochdale P-P Bournemouth
Swindon Town P-P Tranmere Rovers
Ash Taylor was looking forward to getting back into Tranmere’s starting line-up after being out injured for four months. He was a doubt for this match due to a wrist injury but now he definitely won’t be playing.
Fellow Tranmere player Jack Mackreth has signed for Colwyn Bay on loan. He has just returned from a loan spell at Burscough Town where he played against Colwyn Bay. Jack joins Welsh players including former Crewe Alexandra striker Alex Titchiner, who has just returned from a loan spell at Chester.
Yeovil Town P-P Carlisle United
Bristol Rovers P-P Colchester United
Dagenham & Redbridge P-P Peterborough United

FA Cup Fixtures 6th November 2010 (Part 1)
Accrington Stanley v Oldham Athletic
Joe Jacobson was hoping to force his way back into the Oldham first-team after spending the summer on the transfer list. A match against League Two Accrington could give him his chance.
AFC Wimbledon v Ebbsfleet United
Reece Jones signed for AFC Wimbledon this season after leaving Fulham.
Gareth Williams has just recovered from an injury and is likely to be on the bench for Ebbsfleet but he’s pretty dangerous even as a substitute.
Barnet v Charlton Athletic
Grant Basey should keep his place for Barnet against the club he played for last season.
Bournemouth v Tranmere Rovers
Rhoys Wiggins should start for Bournemouth.
Tranmere’s Ash Taylor is still out witn an ankle injury.
Brentford v Aldershot Town
Darren Jones is likely to return to Aldershot’s team after serving a one-match suspension. Aaron Morris took Darren’s place in the team while he was suspended so he could be back on the bench.
Bury v Exeter City
Owain fon Williams is at Bury on loan from Stockport County but he has been given permission to play against Exeter.
Daniel Nardiello is expected to start for Exeter after recovering from a hamstring injury. Richard Duffy could return to Exeter’s starting line-up if he’s fully recovered from illness – but if he doesn’t, Rob Edwards could keep his place. I’m not sure we’ll see Andy Marriott this season but if he’s going to play/sit on the bench, it’s most likely to happen against lower league opposition.

Welsh Player News 15th October 2010 (League One)
Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale says Daniel Nardiello should be fit for Saturday’s match against Carlisle United.
Rob Edwards is expected to play in defence for Exeter City against his former club Carlisle United. He says this will make his return to the starting line-up even more special.
Goalkeeper and General Manager Andy Marriott is the ambassador for Yeovil Town’ One Game One Community project, which promotes the fact that everyone is different... but we’re also all the same.
Ben Davies is concerned about his back and hamstring but he says it’s worse for two of his team-mates, who are also injured and haven’t been able to train. Notts County manager Craig Short is worried Ben might jump out of the transfer window. Probably not the best idea with his hamstring…
Oldham Athletic chairman Simon Corney says four transfer-listed players have refused moves to League Two or Blue Square Premier sides. He doesn’t name names but there are only five remaining transfer-listed players so there’s a very good chance Joe Jacobson is one of those who has refused a move. I thought Joe did well for Oldham up until his injury so I can’t really blame him if he does feel he should be playing in League One.
Brentford’s Nicky Adams has joined Rochdale on loan just two months after joining Brentford from Leicester City. The move will be made permanent in January. Poor Nicky but Rochdale are better than Brentford at the moment so maybe he’s not too disappointed. Nicky first played for Rochdale on loan from Leicester City in 2009. Nicky says the stop-start nature of his time at Brentford was disappointing but Brentford manager Andy Scott says the problem was that Nicky couldn’t settle in London and it was affecting him in matches and in training. Perhaps both are true. While Nicky did play well for Leyton Orient last year, that was a short-term move and he didn’t move to Orient on a permanent basis, even though they were interested.
Let's hope Nicky's time at Rochdale makes a nice birthday present for him - he is twenty-four today. Happy Birthday!

League One News 11th August 2010
Nicky Adams says a knee injury and the loss of his medical notes are to blame for his shaky beginning at Brentford.
Carlisle United striker Jason Price was not impressed with his performance against Port Vale in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, despite scoring his first goal of the season.
A number of reports claim that Exeter City goalkeeper Andy Marriott requires groin surgery but they actually mean Mansfield keeper Alan Marriott. The real Andy Marriott is almost certainly still at Exeter, giving new goalkeeper Artur Krysial advice.
Milton Keynes Dons manager Karl Robinson is supporting Jermaine Easter through his goal drought. Jermaine’s team-mate Mathias Doumbe also has positive words for the striker.
Carl Fletcher has won the Vital Plymouth Argyle Goal of the Month competition. Not that he's been able to celebrate with his team-mates. Carl has been training alone as jury service prevents him from attending training with his team-mates. And I bet he's glad to have a bit of peace and quiet after spending hours locked up with his fellow jurors.

League One Results 21st August 2010 Part 1
Carlisle United 4-1 Milton Keynes Dons
Both these teams have a Welsh striker who used to play for Millwall on the books – and both seem to be continuing where they left off at the end of last season. Carlisle are on good form, getting lots of wins and because it’s the beginning of the season, that kind of form has put them right at the top of the table. MK Dons on the other hand are a bit hit-and-miss.
Carlisle were actually without their Welsh ex-Millwall striker as Jason Price has a thigh injury but Jermaine Easter was playing for MK Dons which was quite unlucky really as it was an incident between Jermaine and Carlisle’s Ian Harte – for which Harte should arguably have got a red - which spurred Carlisle on to win the match. Jermaine is also on his longest run without a goal in MK Dons colours – 854 minutes according to Vital MK Dons.
Exeter City 2-2 Bristol Rovers
This was a great game in terms of entertainment and incident but wasn’t a great match for the Welshmen - although at least none of them actually lost.
Daniel Nardiello started well, giving Exeter the goal he’d wanted to score for team-mate Adam Stansfield, who died of cancer last week. Adam wore the No 9 shirt and Daniel’s goal came in the ninth minute. Thirteen minutes later, he left the field injured.
Team-mate Richard Duffy didn’t have a great day either - he was sent off just after half-time. He was so sure he was was getting a red card, he was off down the tunnel before the referee had got his card out. Rob Edwards on the other hand got his first start of the season and managed to stay on the pitch for the full match with only a yellow card to his name. No sign of Andy Marriott, at least not in the squad.
For the away saide, Byron Anthony was hoping for more goals after s very late winner last week but instead he ended up conceding a penalty – though it was perhaps wrongly awarded, it was maybe more of a player sandwich than a penalty. Ben Swallow was on the bench, alongside another young Welshmen who is called either Eliot Richard or Eliot Richards, depending on what you read. BBC Sport calls him Richard although they once spelled Danny Coyne’s name JONES (mistaking him for Middlesbrough’s other goalkeeper Brad, now a Liverpool player) that probably isn’t conclusive. The Bristol Rovers site and Wikipedia says Richards so I’ll go with Eliot Richards for now.
Notts County 1-0 Dagenham & Redbridge
Notts County finally lifted themselves off the bottom of the table – and all the way up to 16th – when they beat one of the sides promoted with them.
It was no surprise to see that the player who got the assist for County’s goal was Ben Davies, who made a great pass to goalscorer Craig Westcarr.
Dagenham played well but didn’t take their chances – that’s always a danger when the only Welshman in your team is a goalkeeper, in this case Tony Roberts.

League One Fixtures 21st August 2010 Part 1
Carlisle United v Milton Keynes Dons
This fixture sees two Welsh strikers who used to play for Millwall go up against each other as Carlisle and Milton Keynes Dons both hope they’ll still be in the top half of the table this time tomorrow.
Jason Price might be featured in an article called ‘Cumbrians in Good Health’ but it seems the title doesn’t apply to him. Jason has a muscle tear and is expected to be out for a fortnight.
Jermaine Easter was MK Dons’ top scorer last season but he hasn’t scored yet. He’s managed to fool BBC Sport into thinking he’d scored a goal but they found him out pretty quickly.
Charlton Athletic v Oldham Athletic
Only two teams in League One have a 100% record. And as the two teams are Charlton and Oldham, at least one of them will lose their 100% record tomorrow.
Charlton have got rid of all their Welsh players although as Grant Basey’s move to Aberdeen has hit a snag, maybe they’ll have a go at bringing him back. Oldham are attempting to get rid of their Welsh player Joe Jacobson. There are some very strange managers around. You wouldn’t catch me doing something like that.
Exeter City v Bristol Rovers
Exeter play their first match since the death of striker Adam Stansfield, who had cancer. Exeter hope that a win over Bristol Rovers will be one of many tributes to Adam.
Richard Duffy and Daniel Nardiello wll probably be in the starting line-up with Rob Edwards on the bench. But they seem to have forgotten about Andy Marriott.
Bristol Rovers are expected to name the same starting line-up as last time so that means Byron Anthony will start and Ben Swallow will be on the bench.

League One Results 7th August 2010 Part 1
Carlisle United 2-0 Brentford
Carlisle manager Greg Abbott says he expects new signing Jason Price to score lots of goals this season. But he’s not going to do that if you leave him on the bench. Not that I’m doubting Jason’s ability to get the ball into the net when he’s sitting on the bench but it won’t count as a goal.
It’s a good thing Carlisle won anyway really. They played very well and deserved the win so maybe Jason won’t be in the next game either.
Charlton Athletic 1-0 Bournemouth
Charlton will be going for promotion again this season and they certainly started the right way, by beating newly-promoted Bournemouth.
Charlton have got rid of their Welsh players but it doesn’t seem to have hurt them so far. New sigining Rhoys Wiggins went straight into the team as Bournemouth’s left back but Joe Partington didn’t get into the squad at all.
Exeter City 2-2 Colchester United
Colchester were never going to have an opening day like last season’s 7-1 victory over Champions Norwich City. But they must have been hopeful of getting three points when the 87th minute arrived and still Exeter hadn’t equalised.
Exeter would have preferred a winning start but they fought back well and don’t necessarily look like relegation fodder on this evidence.
Daniel Nardiello made his League debut for Exeter and won the 7th-minute penalty which put Exeter ahead. Richard Duffy played the full match despite a recent injury while Rob Edwards was on the bench. Andy Marriott was neither in the team nor on the bench. Sounds ominous. And a bit annoying too.
Lee Beevers and new signing Lloyd James were on the bench for Colchester.
Notts County 0-3 Huddersfield
This really shouldn’t have been as surprising as it was. Notts County have only just been promoted from League Two and Huddersfield were in the play-offs last season. So really this was a perfectly sensible result but it was a surprise all the same. I don’t know why.
Ben Davies played the full match for Notts County but couldn’t find the net.

League One Fixtures 7th August 2010 Part 2
Exeter City v Colchester United
Colchester’s first match of last season went brilliantly against the team who won League One. But as this is football, they could well lose to a team that’s predicted to go down.
Richard Duffy has a knock but it’s looking as though he’ll be okay to start. But if he is out, Rob Edwards’ chances of starting should increase although they don’t usually play in the same part of defence.
New signing Daniel Nardiello has impressed in pre-season so I think he’ll start. But Exeter seem to have forgotten Andy Marriott’s existence. Exeter – are you sure it’s a good idea to ignore your own General Manager?
Colchester were lucky to be able to snap up Lloyd James – nothing against Colchester, I just never thought for a moment that he’d be available. Lee Beevers has been relishing the chance to play again after a year on the sidelines but he was an unused substitute for Colchester’s last pre-season match (or at least the last one I know about). Tom Bender could also make the squa.
Notts County v Huddersfield Town
I think the idea is that Notts County will be a Premier League club in a few years’ time and they’re certainly moving in the right direction now, despite a very strange start to last season. Maybe both these teams will be promoted at the end of the season.
Ben Davies should start for Notts County. He was much too good for League Two so let’s see how he does in League One.
Peterborough United v Bristol Rovers
Many are predicting Peterborough to be challenging for promotion. I don’t know why they’d want to go back up there again after last season but it’s good to have ambition. Bristol Rovers also see promotion as a possibility but I don’t know how many people agree with them.
Peterborough allowed their former manager Darren Ferguson to buy Craig Morgan for Preston North End but they weren’t without a Welshman for long. They signed Arron Davies after his non-contract with Brighton & Hove Albion came to an end and his planned spell with Yeovil town suddenly didn’t look nearly as appealing.
Bristol Rovers’ Byron Anthony has a dead leg but he’s expected to shake it off which sounds quite gruesome really but I’m sure he’ll still start. Ben Swallow had a virus eight days ago but I’d expect him to be well enough to sit on the bench – which is probably what he’d have been doing anyway.

Welsh Player News (and rumours) 2nd August, League One (Part 1)
I got a bit excited when I saw the headline ‘Magpies given lesson by League One Cherries’ but it wasn’t Newcastle United or even Notts County, it was Dorchester Town. So that was a bit of a let-down but the good news is Joe Partington is not only back in training, he actually played in Bournemouth’s 5-0 victory. Rhoys Wiggins didn’t play though, it was a (not very) weakened line-up.
Jason Price nearly scored for Carlisle United against Hibernian but the ball wouldn’t quite go over the line. I’m sure Daniel Nardiello would sympathise. But Carlisle won anyway so it doesn’t matter. Except it kind of does because it meant David Stephens lost.
Colchester United suffered their first pre-season defeat when they lost 2-1 to an Aldershot Town side featuring Darren Jones and Aaron Morris, the latter replacing the former. But their goalkeeper was busy becoming a father which does tend to weaken the side a bit.
Lloyd James would probably have got an assist if the player he passed to hadn’t been too selfless. Tom Bender was a substitute but Lee Beevers stayed on the bench.
Richard Duffy admits his chances of being fit for the first game of the new season aren’t that high. But generally he feels his pre-season has been positive and he’s been very impressed with new Welsh signing Daniel Nardiello, who says he feels fitter than he has done for years.
Even without Richard, Exeter City still managed to beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1. Daniel had another good game, again scoring for Exeter although there was some concern when he suffered a knock. Rob Edwards played in defence and midfield (not at the same time) but again Andy Marriott didn’t play. Reece Jones, formerly of Fulham, was an AFC Wimbledon substitute.

Pre-season Friendlies (Part Three)
Clevedon Town 0-3 Exeter City
Daniel Nardiello scored for Exeter as they beat Clevedon Town. Daniel was a real handful during this match and Richard Duffy came close to getting on the scoresheet too. Daniel, Richard and Rob Edwards were all in Exeter’s starting line-up but there was no sign of Andy Marriott, even though they used two goalkeepers.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Chelsea
Andy Dorman came close to scoring against the League Champions when his new side lost narrowly to Chelsea.
Dartford 2-0 Southend United
Peter Gilbert played for Southend and must have been quite disappointed with the result. This report says he’s a new signing but as far as I know, he hasn’t been able to sign a contract due to Southend’s financial situation and all he’s done is agree a contract. Until they do sign, Southend have only nine players on their books.
Dorchester Town 1-1 Dagenham & Redbridge
Dorchester’s late goal gave the Conference South side a draw with League One Dag & Red. Dorchester could have scored early in the match but Tony Roberts wouldn’t let them.

Welsh Player News (and rumours) 29th June ( League 1)
Lloyd James is on trial with Colchester United. Southampton made the surprising decision to release him at the end of last season.
Andy Marriott says he’s even more determined to fight to be Exeter City’s No. 1 following the arrival of new goalkeeper Artur Krysiak. Andy says he’s enjoying being Exeter’s general manager.

League One Results 8th May Part 1
Brentford 0-0 Hartlepool United
Brentford finish in a more than creditable 9th place while for Hartlepool the overwhelming feeling is probably one of relief. Their three-point deduction put them in real danger but the point allowed them to stay up on goal difference, at the expense of Gillingham.
Lewis Price was left out of the squad, with the reserve goalkeeper place given to young Simon Moore. Brentford’s other loan goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, left the field in the first minute of stoppage time, presumably so he could get a bit of (very much deserved) applause from the supporters. Maybe Lewis had gone back to Derby in disgust (I wouldn’t blame him) but Lewis was crucial for Brentford at the beginning of the season so it would have been nice to give him the final few minutes.
Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Yeovil Town
A final-day win for Brighton was enough for them to finish in 13th, a point behind Milton Keynes Dons – probably somewhere they never thought they’d be at the start of the season. Quite possibly somewhere they never thought they’d be just a few short weeks ago.
Andrew Crofts was given the Brighton captaincy after an excellent first half to the season and he continued his great work in this match. He was substituted two minutes from the end so the fans could applaud their Player of the Year.
Yeovil are another team who were in relegation trouble not that long ago, only to be saved by a Wels midfielder. Okay, let’s be fair, a total of four Welsh midfielders (not to mention an English midfielder called Welsh) contributed to Yeovil’s survival.
Star loanee Gavin Williams’ ankle injury meant he started on the bench and only made an appearance after 63 minutes but I’m sure he was applauded onto the pitch. Shaun MacDonald, as expected, didn’t recover from his groin injury in time for the final game of the season but he did enough with Brighton to be offered a new contract at parent club Swansea City. Arron Davies came off the bench ten minutes after Gavin. The fourth star Welsh midfielder is Owain Tudur Jones, now back with Norwich City.
Yeovil had only six substitutes this week but four of them were Welsh. In addition to Gavin and Arron, assistant manager Nathan Jones was also on the bench and there was what I believe was a first ever appearance in the squad for young Rhys Baggridge. This team could hardly have been more perfect if I’d picked it myself.
Exeter City 2-1 Huddersfield Town
Exeter’s League One status was looking very shaky before this match. Tranmere Rovers looked certain to beat Stockport County and a win was necessary in order to climb above Gillingham and (taking goal difference into account) Hartlepool United. As Exeter were facing Huddersfield Town, who still had a chance of automatic promotion, they probably weren’t exactly the favourites for this match.
But it happened, Exeter survived and they will play again in League One next season.
Richard Duffy was the only Welshman to start for Exeter and was involved in the mix-up that led to Huddersfield’s goal but luckily that didn’t matter. Richard was joined by Rob Edwards after 62 minutes but Andy Marriott and Stuart Fleetwood spent the last game of the season on the bench.

League One Fixtures 8th May Part 1
Brentford v Hartlepool United
Brentford are guaranteed to finish in the top ten but a home match against struggling Hartlepool United could lift them to ninth.
Hartlepool were deducted three points for fielding an eligible player which puts them right back in the relegation mix again. They need a win to be sure of survival.
Loan keeper Lewis Price has been left out of Brentford’s squad again. I don’t know why he’s still there when all the other loan players seem to have been sent back but whatever. There’s always something you don’t understand in football. I’ve got the offside rule sorted, now it’s the loan rules that’s the problem. Derby manager Nigel Clough hasn’t made a decision on Lewis’ future yet. So maybe he’ll keep him. Who knows, maybe he’ll even play him.
Brighton & Hove Albion v Yeovil Town
Brighton were fighting relegation not long ago – now they’ll be hoping for a win over Yeovil, a defeat for Walsall and a place in the top half of the table.
Andrew Crofts will play in midfield for Brighton.
Yeovil could be without star loan midfielder Gavin Williams, who has an ankle injury. Shaun MacDonald is not expected to be fit following a groin injury but Arron Davies is probably fine. Maybe the loan rule doesn’t apply to League One clubs? Assistant manager Nathan Jones could also be in the squad. Or not.
Colchester United v Leyton Orient
Colchester could move up to seventh if they win – but that won’t be much consolation for missing out on the play-offs. Orient have a chance of a 15th place finish.
Stop press: Lee Beevers might, just might return from his shoulder injury (I thought it had turned into a knee injury) for Colchester’s last game of the season after scoring in the reserves. That sounds a bit dodgy, I’m sure some of the reserves are underage.
Exeter City v Huddersfield Town
Exeter could be the favourite to go down with the most difficult run-in – they face Huddersfield Town, who still have a small chance of automatic promotion, rivals Tranmere Rovers facing bottom club Stockport County. Hartlepool United are also in the reckoning but only really if Exeter can win, in which case Exeter are almost certainly safe anyway, given that Tranmere are unlikely to win 18-0.
Richard Duffy is likely to start for Exeter, perhaps with one or both of Rob Edwards and Stuart Fleetwood. Rob says it will be a tense match (maybe just slightly!) but that Huddersfield’s attacking style of play might work to Exeter’s advantage. Andy Marriott will probably be on the bench although it was up to me I’d definitely give him a chance for the last game. Andy has done well for Exeter and was only dropped due to injury.

League One Results 1st May Part 1
Bristol Rovers 0-3 Norwich City
Norwich might already be Champions but it looks as though they are keen to end the season in style. Bristol Rovers haven’t been on great form recently but it’s still a good – if not exactly surprising – result for Norwich.
Byron Anthony returned from injury to play in defence for Bristol Rovers, with Ben Swallow starting for his third consecutive game.
Carlisle United 1-1 Walsall
Both sides will finish in mid-table but Carlisle at least should be happy with that after only just surviving relegation last season.
Jason Price made his first start for Carlisle since recovering from a thigh injury – and it was he who scored Carlisle’s equalising goal. He was glad to score as Walsall’s goal was quite possibly slightly his fault.
Rhys Weston played the full match for Walsall with Mark Bradley on the bench.
Charlton Athletic 1-0 Leeds United
A win for Leeds would have seen them promoted but now it’s very close between Charlton, Leeds and Millwall, Swindon Town and Huddersfield Town, although Huddersfield’s chances are not that great. Particularly with Millwall and Swindon meeting on the last day of the season.
Charlton were without Grant Basey while Sanchez Watt dropped to the bench again for Leeds. He was a 73rd minute substitute but Leeds could not find an equaliser although they did look more like scoring after Sanchez’ introduction.
Gillingham 2-1 Southampton
Gillingham have a good chance of surviving as this win put them two points outside the play-off zone but they would need to win an away game in order to be completely sure – something they haven’t done all season. Southampton will be in the top eight despite their points deduction.
I’m really not sure what’s going on with Lloyd James’ ankle but it seemed fine today. He started for Southampton and didn’t come off until the end of the match (and probably at half-time too but that doesn’t count).
Hartlepool United 1-1 Exeter City
Hartlepool still don’t know if they’re going to have three points deducted or not. If not, they’re safe. If they do have points deducted they’ll be a point outside the relegation zone. Exeter are only out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
Richard Duffy and Rob Edwards both started for Exeter with Stuart Fleetwood coming off the bench for the last three minutes. Andy Marriott stayed on the bench.

League One Fixtures 1st May Part 2
Hartlepool United v Exeter City
It’s still not decided whether Hartlepool will be deducted three points or not – if not, a draw would see them safe, even a defeat will be enough if Tranmere Rovers fail to win against Millwall. If the points are deducted and Hartlepool don’t win against Exeter, they could only be out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
Exeter are in even deeper trouble, just two points from trouble.
Richard Duffy and Rob Edwards could both start again for Exeter with Andy Marriott on the bench. Stuart Fleetwood was dropped from the squad last week as Exeter were playing his parent club, Charlton, but he’s hoping his Tuesday night hat-trick for the reserves will help ensure he’s not left out against Hartlepool.
Huddersfield Town v Colchester United
Automatic promotion is very unlikely for Huddersfield but it’s still mathematically possible. Colchester have lost the chance even of being in the play-offs.
Colchester’s Lee Beevers is back in full training and played for the reserves on Monday but he’s not likely to be fit enough to play against Huddersfield. Thomas Bender could be in the squad though, he sometimes is.
Milton Keynes Dona v Brighton & Hove Albion
After finishing third last year, this season must be such a disappointment for MK Dons fans. Brighton meanwhile are not only safe, they could even finish in the top half.
Jermaine Easter couldn’t find the net for MK Dons last week but he wasn’t completely recovered from a thigh injury which is still troubling him. He’s one of many doubts this week – BBC Sport reports that MK Dons have just two fit first-team players. But Jermaine’s week hasn’t been all bad. He’s been named Football Writers’ Player of the Year as well as the top goalscorer award (he must be so glad Jason Puncheon went to Southampton).
Andrew Crofts will play for Brighton. He’s a big reason why Brighton are safe. He really is, I’m not just saying that because he’s Welsh.
Southend United v Stockport County
If only this fixture had happened last month, it might have been a bit relegation battle. But as it is, both teams are already destined to meet in League Two next season. Southend could finish 21st though if they’re lucky.
Owain fon Williams will play in goal for Stockport. I shouldn’t think many people would like to swap places with him. Owain and Craig Roberts probably won’t play but he’s one of just five Stockport players who aren’t out of contract at the end of the season.

League One Results 24th April Part 1
Brentford 1-1 Yeovil Town
Brentford have now won eleven games in a row – not bad considering their Welsh goalkeeper hasn’t played for months. Yeovil are still two points away from being completely safe.
Lewis Price wasn’t even on the bench for Brentford. And they only had six substitutes. Why not let Lewis on the bench too? I’m sure there’s not a rule about how many goalkeepers you put on the bench and even if there is, there’s no rule against sending on ‘outfield player’ Lewis Price and telling him to go in goal.
Yeovil might be having a bit of a Welsh midfield crisis. Shaun MacDonald wasn’t in the squad at all while Gavin Williams was substituted after 42 minutes. But at least Arron Davies got to come off the bench after 62 minutes. Nathan Jones was on the bench too.
Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 Bristol Rovers
In the fifth minute of extra time, Brighton were looking on course for a draw, which wouldn’t quite be enough to ensure they would definitely stay up this season. Then Brighton got a penalty. Admittedly, it would have been more dramatic if it was the last day of the season but still, it must have been seriously nervy stuff. But luckily the penalty went in and Brighton are now safe.
Bristol Rovers will almost certainly still finish in the top half of the table.
Andrew Crofts played the full match for Brighton. He’s been great for them this season and when I say he’s probably half the reason why they stayed up, I might not even be exaggerating by all that much.
Ben Swallow got another start for Bristol Rovers but Byron Anthony was missing due to a knee injury.
Colchester United 1-1 Tranmere Rovers
Colchester are officially out of the play-off race which is a shame for any team but it must be especially tough when you were right up there for most of the season. Tranmere are two points from safety.
Ash Taylor played another ninety minutes for Tranmere and was, according to his manager, a tower of strength. Even if they do go down, I hope he won’t be too disappointed with his own performances because he shouldn’t be, he’s been great.
Exeter City 1-1 Charlton Athletic
Not a great result for either team, as Exeter are still just two points from the relegation zone and Charlton have very little chance now of automatic promotion.
Rob Edwards was back in Exeter’s starting line-up alongside Richard Duffy and I think Rob might have got the assist for the goal, it does sound that way although BBC Sport says not. Andy Marriott was on the bench but Stuart Fleetwood was omitted from the squad as he’s on loan from Charlton.

League One Fixtures 17th April Part 3
Tranmere Rovers v Exeter City
Tranmere won’t get out of the relegation places if they win but they will be level on points with Gillingham if they lose to Leeds United. Which is certainly possible. Exeter are five points ahead of the relegation zone. It sounds okay in theory but Tranmere are team most likely to catch Exeter. A Tranmere win would cut Exeter’s safety margin to two points.
Ash Taylor will play for Tranmere. Richard Duffy is likely to start for Exeter, possibly with Stuart Fleetwood who has started the last couple of games. Rob Edwards could return from a hamstring injury. Andy Marriott will probably be on the bench.
Yeovil Town v Southampton
Yeovil are eight points clear of danger while Southampton still have a very faint mathematical chance of reaching the play-offs.
Gavin Williams will almost certainly keep his place in Yeovil’s team along with Shaun MacDonald. Shaun hasn’t been scoring lately but he hasn’t had much chance when Gavin keeps scoring. Arron Davies is likely to be left out due to the loanee number regulations.
Arron and assistant manager Nathan Jones recently played for Yeovil in the Somerset Premier Cup. They won 2-0 away at Bishop Sutton.
Lloyd James will probably be on the bench for Southampton.
Monday, 12 April 2010
League One Fixture 12th April
Swindon Town v Exeter City
Swindon will re-claim second place if they beat Exeter although they will have played more games than the teams around them. Exeter will also have played more games but moving eight points clear of the relegation zone might even see them safe.
Billy Bodin probably won’t be on Swindon’s bench but there should be Welshmen all over the place for Exeter.
Richard Duffy is likely to start and there might also be a third consecutive start for Stuart Fleetwood. Rob Edwards might or might not return from a hamstring injury, depending on what you read but either way his return is far from certain. Andy Marriott will probably be on the bench, as he has been ever since injuring his neck.

League One Results 10th April Part 1
Brentford 3-0 Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield only remain in the play-offs on goal difference after losing to the kid-table but resurgent Brentford.
Lewis Price was back on the bench for Brentford after being left out of the last squad.
Brighton & Hove Albion 1-2 Carlisle United
Brighton remain six points from the relegation zone despite losing. Not so long ago they were looking mid-table like Carlisle.
Andrew Crofts returned to Brighton’s starting line-up after family illness ruled him out of their last game. He played well and gave Carlisle plenty to think about. Jason Price started for Carlisle and conceded a free kick which led to one of Brighton’s goals – but it’s questionable whether he fouled the Carlisle player on purpose or whether the Carlisle player made him foul him.
Colchester United 3-0 Swindon Town
Colchester kept their play-off dreams alive by beating the formerly second-placed Swindon Town and going level on points with nearest rivals Huddersfield Town.
Both teams were without their Wales players. Lee Beevers is injured, Thomas Bender wasn’t in the Colchester’s squad and neither was Swindon’s Billy Bodin.
Exeter City 0-0 Leyton Orient
The draw was enough to ensure Exeter and Orient are now out of the relegation zone but both clubs remain in trouble.
Stuart Fleetwood started again for Exeter and nearly scored with a header. Richard Duffy also kept his place in the starting line-up. Andy Marriott was on the bench but Rob Edwards was ruled out with his hamstring injury again.
Leeds United 2-0 Southend United
Leeds keep their automatic promotion dream alive by beating Southend United, who stay in the relegation places.
Sanchez Watt was on loan at Southend earlier in the season. He is now on loan at Leeds and made his appearance two minutes after the second goal went in.
Norwich City 1-1 Milton Keynes Dons
Norwich aren’t guaranteed an automatic promotion place yet – they’ll probably get it but maybe they need to be more careful. MK Dons have struggled recently yet they managed to get a point.
Jermaine Easter worked very for Milton Keynes Dons but couldn’t find a winner. But how many times have teams found a winner against Norwich this season? Only seven times.
Huddersfield only remain in the play-offs on goal difference after losing to the kid-table but resurgent Brentford.
