League One
Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale was impressed with the performance of his 37 year old assistant manager Rob Edwards when he made his third start of the season against his former side Carlisle United. Rob’s defensive partner Billy Jones also had some good words to say about Rob and Vital Exeter City agrees that Rob has still got it.
Daniel Nardiello had a feeling Exeter could beat Carlisle – it’s just a shame he stayed on the bench and missed the whole thing. But as he says, it just shows how strong Exeter are up front.
League Two
Chesterfield striker Craig Davies has been nominated for the PFA Fans’ League Two Player of the Month award.
Stuart Fleetwood says Hereford United need to stop making so many errors. He can’t come off the bench and inspire a fightback every week. But other than that, he was delighted with the 4-3 victory over Northampton Town.
Rhys Day was thrilled to get an ovation from Mansfield Town supporters when he returned to his former club on loan from Oxford United. He also hinted that the move could become permanent. He nearly marked his debut with a goal but unfortunately Mansfield could only draw when home side Darlington scored a late equaliser.
Gareth Owen says that in order to end their winless run, the Port Vale players must stick together. But maybe the fans’ expectations are just a tiny bit too high.
Scotland
Joe Ledley was delighted when Celtic won their eighth successive game of the season against Dundee United.
Rhys Weston speaks of his personal devastation following the likely demise of his club Dundee.

Welsh Player News 16th August 2010 (Scotland)
Aberdeen haven’t signed former Charlton Athletic defender Grant Basey yet but manager Mark McGhee says he’ll get it sorted soon and Grant isn’t going anywhere. I think that’s what Charlton thought too.
FC Utrecht play Celtic in an Europa League play-off match – and Joe Ledley is the player who’s got them quaking in their football boots. They will probably be even more scared if Craig Bellamy joins the club, as Joe hopes he will.
Joe played as Celtic beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 1-0 away.
David Stephens was a substitute for Hibernian when they faced Motherwell but he made his presence felt when he got on the line to deny Motherwell a last-minute equaliser. Hibernian won 3-2 away. I just hope David likes being referred to as ‘Big David Stephens’ because his manager keeps on doing it!
Kyle Letheren has signed a one-year contract with Kilmarnock.
Rhys Weston has an ankle injury and was unable to play for Dundee against Partick Thistle. Home side Partick won 1-0. Dundee have won all their competitive matches with Rhys in the side apart from the one where he left after 17 minutes Dundee play Ross County on Saturday.

Welsh Player News (and rumours) 2nd August Scottish/Irish
Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee wants to sign trialist Grant Basey but he needs to sort out some financial issues first.
Joe Ledley is loving life at Celtic. He missed the defeat to Arsenal in the Emirates Cup due to a knock. Celtic came back from 3-0 down but Arsenal just about hung on for once.
I was all ready to write about Rhys Weston joining Motherwell – only to find he’s signed for Dundee instead. He’s thrilled to be living with his family again and he hopes to get Dundee back into the Premier League.
Kyle Letheren doesn’t seem to like Motherwell much either. They didn’t let him play once and he’s in talks with Kilmarnock now.
David Stephens played the full match for Hibernian as they lost 1-0 to Jason Price’s Carlisle United.
Matthew Tipton has signed for Dundalk following an unsuccessful trial with Bradford City. His debut was a 1-0 defeat to Sligo Rovers.

Welsh Player News 31st July Scotland
At least two Aberdeen trialists have been ditched but Grant Basey is still hanging in there and it looks as though the manager wants him. A return to Charlton Athletic certainly looks unlikely.
Joe Ledley thinks Celtic can still qualify for the Champions’ League. It’s probably about as likely as you staying at Cardiff, Joe. But as my Scottish friend’s little girl says, at least you’ll have more energy for beating Rangers next season and that’s the important thing.
Meanwhile David Stephens, now with Hibernian, is excited about playing in the Europa League. I think it’s great. It’s easy to see that for some Premier League clubs, the Europa League is just an embarrassing and unwelcome distraction that comes too close to the weekend games. But it’s great to see players appreciating it.
Kyle Letheren was on trial at Motherwell last I heard, now he seems to be at Kilmarnock. But this report is dated 22nd July, who knows where he is now.
Rhys Weston hasn’t signed for Motherwell yet but it’s expected to be finalised soon.

Welsh Player News (and rumours) 11th June (League One, League Two, Scotland)
League One
Rob Edwards thinks Exeter City’s new pitch will attract better players to the club.
Peterborough United have confirmed that Craig Morgan wants to leave the club. He wants to move further north for family reasons. They’d keep him if they could – and they’ll probably sign a new centre back whether Craig is at the club next season or not.
League Two
Darren Jones says he’ll be happy to stay at Hereford United if the deal is right for him and his family.
Hereford United’s Ryan Green has signed a one-year extension to his contract.
Gareth Owen is hoping for an extension to his current Port Vale contract.
Scottish League
Motherwell are in talks with Rhys Weston, who was offered a new contract with Walsall but decided to leave and look for a club in Scotland near his family.

League One news and rumours 14th May
Craig Davies has returned to Brighton following a loan spell at Port Vale and his future is said to be in doubt. Port Vale manager Micky Adams has hinted he could return to the club.
There were rumours a while ago that Bristol Rovers would release David Pipe by mutual consent but they don’t seem to have done it yet. Cheltenham Town could be his next club. Following a successful loan spell there earlier this season, he attended at least one of their matches. Cheltenham wanted to extend his loan but Bristol Rovers said no.
Jason Price has returned to parent club Millwall after his loan spell with Carlisle United came to an end. He says he would be happy to join Carlisle permanently if the possibility arose. For now, howver, he is a Millwall player and they have another play-off bid on their hands.
Stuart Fleetwood is another who could potentially be involved in the play-offs. He has returned to parent club Charlton Athletic following his loan to Exeter City.
Rhoys Wiggins is very interested in returning to Bournemouth next season should the opportunity arise. He helped them to promotion to League One as parent club Norwich City were crowned champions of League One.
Jack Mackreth has been offered his first professional contract by Tranmere Rovers.
Mark Bradley has been released by Walsall although he’s still in Wales’ under-21 squad. He says it was disappointing but not a surprise as he’s hardly played recently but he will come back a stronger player.
Rhys Weston has also left Walsall by ‘mutual consent’ as his family live in Scotland and he’d like to play there so he can be closer to him. He had a recent trial at Motherwell.
There’s no news on Arron Davies but presumably he has been released by Brighton & Hove Albion after signing on non-contract terms until the end of the season. He had made an agreement with Yeovil Town but due to his already playing for Nottingham Forest (who released him) and loan club Brighton, he wasn’t permitted to sign for another club. Non-contract terms at Brighton and a loan to Yeovil were, however, permitted so that’s what he did, with a view to signing for Yeovil as soon as he could.

League One Results 8th May Part 3
Stockport County 0-3 Tranmere Rovers
Stockport finished their season with another defeat – but they won’t be joined in League Two by Tranmere. Tranmere’s win and Gillingham’s (not unexpected) defeat saved them from relegation and they finished 19th.
Owain fon Williams was again on the bench for Stockport. Ash Taylor played for Tranmere.
Walsall 2-1 Milton Keynes Dons
Walsall’s victory moved them up to a very respectable 10th place – climbing over MK Dons in the process. MK Dons, after making an early run for the play-offs, only just finished in the top half of the table.
Walsall are now completely Welshless. Rhys Weston was released by mutual consent prior to this game, having decided he wants to play for a club nearer his family, who live in Scotland. Mark Bradley spent his last game on the bench for Walsall before also being released.
Jermaine Easter played for MK Dons despite continuing problems with his thigh. He got the assist for MK Dons’ goal.

League One Fixtures 8th May Part 2
Leeds United v Bristol Rovers
A win for Leeds will secure their promotion from League One – finally! Even a draw would be okay if Millwall and Swindon Town will. And as they’re playing each other, I can guarantee that if one draws, the other will too. Bristol Rovers need to win to be sure of finishing 9th. But they enjoy getting one over on the big clubs - their recent victories include Southampton and Swindon Town.
Sanchez Watt probably will be available for Leeds United. I kind of hope he doesn’t start. Last time he started he got two assists and they won 4-1 and that would be bad news for Millwall. But if he can get two assists and lose 4-2, that would be great.
Byron Anthony is likely to start for Bristol Rovers as his hip seems fine after his return to the squad last week. Ben Swallow too might keep his place in the starting line-up. I’ll just expand on that 4-2 Bristol Rovers win I was talking about. Obviously it would be two goals each for Byron and Ben. (I’ve always liked daydreaming.)
Norwich City v Carlisle United
Carlisle can’t finish higher than 14th but they’ll need a victory over the Champions to ensure they won’t drop any lower. Not much to ask then.
Jason Price will play up front for Carlisle. This is his last chance to convince Carlisle manager Greg Abbott to give him a permanent contract – or to convince Kenny Jackett he needs him at Millwall next season. Jason seems to want to stay at Carlisle.
Oldham Athletic v Charlton Athletic
It hasn’t been a great season for Oldham but if they want a bit of excitement in their lives, they could have a big say in who wins the second automatic promotion spot. Charlton need to beat League One’s other Athletic club to have any chance of finishing second.
Joe Jacobson is probably still recovering from his groin injury so he won’t be available for Oldham. Charlton’s Grant Basey (ankle) probably won’t be ready to come back either.
Southampton v Southend United
Without their points deduction, Southampton would be in the play-off places although with seven teams fighting it out, there’s no guarantee they’d finish there. All the same, a home tie against relegated Southend would have given them a good chance.
Southend need to win to be sure of finishing ahead of Wycombe Wanderers but they might not be overly thrilled by the possibility given they’re both relegated.
Lloyd James made a surprise return to Southampton’s starting line-up last week so maybe he’ll play this time too. He’s out of contract though and BBC Sport says there’s some rule thing going on but they don’t elaborate so maybe they don’t know what they’re talking about any more than I do (my summer homework is to find out about loans and out of contract players).
Stockport County v Tranmere Rovers
Stockport are long down and even a win won’t guarantee that Tranmere won’t be joining them – although, no disrespect to their opponents but I do think Tranmere are more than capable of winning this.
Owain fon Williams was surprisingly on the bench for Stockport’s previous game, maybe he’ll be there again. He might not stay around so it might be good for Stockport to see how they’d manage without him. His replacement said he only found out he was playing in the dressing room before the game. I hope Owain had a bit more notice.
Ash Taylor should play for Tranmere.
Walsall v Milton Keynes Dons
Exciting clash this. The winner is guaranteed to finish ahead of the loser. If it’s a draw, MK Dons stay ahead. It’s like a Cup Final!
Rhys Weston has left Walsall by mutual (but I think amicable) consent. I hope he can find a Scottish club to play for so he can be near his family. I’ll miss seeing him on The Football League show but that’s really not important.
Mark Bradley is also out of contract and it waiting to hear about his future. But he should be available to play.
Jermaine Easter still has a dodgy thigh so he’s a doubt.

League One Results 1st May Part 1
Bristol Rovers 0-3 Norwich City
Norwich might already be Champions but it looks as though they are keen to end the season in style. Bristol Rovers haven’t been on great form recently but it’s still a good – if not exactly surprising – result for Norwich.
Byron Anthony returned from injury to play in defence for Bristol Rovers, with Ben Swallow starting for his third consecutive game.
Carlisle United 1-1 Walsall
Both sides will finish in mid-table but Carlisle at least should be happy with that after only just surviving relegation last season.
Jason Price made his first start for Carlisle since recovering from a thigh injury – and it was he who scored Carlisle’s equalising goal. He was glad to score as Walsall’s goal was quite possibly slightly his fault.
Rhys Weston played the full match for Walsall with Mark Bradley on the bench.
Charlton Athletic 1-0 Leeds United
A win for Leeds would have seen them promoted but now it’s very close between Charlton, Leeds and Millwall, Swindon Town and Huddersfield Town, although Huddersfield’s chances are not that great. Particularly with Millwall and Swindon meeting on the last day of the season.
Charlton were without Grant Basey while Sanchez Watt dropped to the bench again for Leeds. He was a 73rd minute substitute but Leeds could not find an equaliser although they did look more like scoring after Sanchez’ introduction.
Gillingham 2-1 Southampton
Gillingham have a good chance of surviving as this win put them two points outside the play-off zone but they would need to win an away game in order to be completely sure – something they haven’t done all season. Southampton will be in the top eight despite their points deduction.
I’m really not sure what’s going on with Lloyd James’ ankle but it seemed fine today. He started for Southampton and didn’t come off until the end of the match (and probably at half-time too but that doesn’t count).
Hartlepool United 1-1 Exeter City
Hartlepool still don’t know if they’re going to have three points deducted or not. If not, they’re safe. If they do have points deducted they’ll be a point outside the relegation zone. Exeter are only out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
Richard Duffy and Rob Edwards both started for Exeter with Stuart Fleetwood coming off the bench for the last three minutes. Andy Marriott stayed on the bench.

League One Fixtures 1st May Part 1
Bristol Rovers v Norwich City
If Bristol Rovers fail to win this, they’ll have gone five games without a win. Norwich are already Champions.
Byron Anthony is back in training for Bristol Rovers after recovering from a hip injury but he might not be ready to play. Ben Swallow is also likely to be in the squad. Ben is in contention to win Rovers’ Young Player of the Season award.
David Pipe is very unlikely to be in Rovers’ squad as he is rumoured to be about to have his contract terminated by mutual consent but perhaps he’ll sign for Cheltenham Town next season. David spent part of this season on loan there and he went to watch Cheltenham’s match against Aldershot Town last weekend.
Carlisle United v Walsall
Carlisle need to win to have any chance of finishing in the top half but Walsall could stay in the top half even if they lose.
Jason Price came off the bench last weekend after recovering from a hamstring injury and could be back in the starting line-up for this match.
Walsall’s Rhys Weston, who is out of contract at the end of the season, had a trial with Motherwell this week but he has returned in time to play in this match. Leeds United are also said to be interested. I would go for Leeds, especially if they’re in the Championship but Rhys’ wife lives in Glasgow and it must be difficult living in different countries – and Motherwell do have the chance of a Europa League place next season. Mark Bradley injured his knee when Walsall Reserves played Shrewsbury Reserves but he should be fit to play. Whether he’ll get to play is another matter.
Charlton Athletic v Leeds United
Millwall fans aren’t that keen on Charlton as a rule but they’ll be hoping for a home win. Leeds are currently in 2nd place but if Charlton win and Millwall get a draw, Leeds will drop back into the play-off zone.
Grant Basey won’t play for Charlton as he’s recovering from an ankle injury.
Sanchez Watt will be hoping for a second consecutive start after getting an assist – or two assists according to the Yorkshire Post - for Leeds last week.
Gillingham v Southampton
Gillingham could be back in the bottom three if they lose this match – and considering their last match is away, that’s going to leave them with a bit of a problem as Gillingham haven’t won away all season. Southampton will finish 7th or 8th despite a ten-point deduction at the beginning of the season. A win today could make sure it’s 7th.
Lloyd James will probably not play for Southampton due to an ankle injury.
If Bristol Rovers fail to win this, they’ll have gone five games without a win. Norwich are already Champions.

League One Results 24th April Part 2
Leeds United 4-1 Milton Keynes Dons
Leeds remained in the automatic promotion race after thrasing MK Dons 4-1. But let’s not forget MK Dons had three players sent off although only one was sent off in the first half and the third didn’t go until the 90th minute.
Sanchez Watt got his first start for Leeds and celebrated by setting up the opening goal. He was also pretty unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself.
Jermaine Easter passed a fitness test on his thigh played the full match for Milton Keynes Dons.
Norwich City 2-0 Gillingham
Congratulations to Norwich, who are now the League One Champions, They were bottom after the first game but look at them now.
And they did almost all of it without their Welsh players. Rhoys Wiggins was sent out on loan to Bournemouth (where he’s helped them to promotion), Owain Tudur Jones was sent on loan to Yeovil Town, then ignored when he came back, and Josh Dawkin (who is pretty young) never got further than the bench.
Oldham Athletic 2-2 Southend United
A couple of months ago, Southend weren’t particularly looking like relegation candidates but they’ve somehow ended up relegated – not to mention two points behind ‘dead and buried’ Wycombe Wanderers.
Oldham will not be joining them in League Two. A point was enough to save them.
Joe Jacobson didn’t play for Oldham as he’s still recovering from a groin operation.
Southampton 3-2 Carlisle United
Southampton did their best to keep their play-off hopes alive but the teams currently in the play-offs weren’t having it and Huddersfield Town’s win means that Southampton can’t catch them. Without their points deduction, they’d be in the race for automatic promotion.
Carlisle can still finish in the top half if they want to.
Lloyd James was omitted from Southampton’s squad – which was probably sensible considering he only lasted seventeen minutes last week. I hope Southampton look after him and get him properly better for next season.
Jason Price had a fitness test on his hamstring injury. He was only fit enough for Carlisle’s bench but he came on after 62 minutes and Carlisle did get a goal about half an hour later.
Stockport County 0-6 Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield’s win – if ‘win’ doesn’t seem like too much of an understatement – ensures that they’ll be in the play-offs. Stockport don’t have a lot to play for but it’s a shame they let in six whole goals.
Owain fon Williams was in goal for Stockport. But at least a result like this means I get to see a lot of him on The Football League Show. And I’m sure he kept the score down more than you’d think.
Walsall 3-1 Hartlepool United
This win puts Walsall up into the top half of the table. Hartlepool’s goal difference means they’re realistically safe – but they won’t be if they have three points deducted for fielding an ineligible player.
Rhys Weston returned to Walsall’s starting line-up but Mark Bradley stayed on the bench. Mark has had a knee problem but he might not have played anyway.

League One Results 13th April Part 1
Bristol Rovers 1-5 Southampton
This result leaves Bristol Rovers ten points behind the play-off places – even mathematically they have pretty much now chance. Southampton will be five points behind if they win their game in hand – unlikely but not impossible and it would a great achievement considering their points deduction. So they could be playing derbies against Portsmouth next season, I’m sure that will cheer up the Portsmouth fans no end.
Byron Anthony played in central defence for Bristol Rovers and probably didn’t have his best game ever but that’s fine, he’d have more to worry about if this was his best game ever. Ben Swallow watched from the bench, probably through his fingers.
Lloyd James was on the bench for Southampton. Both he and Ben Swallow wear a No. 23 shirt – it’s one of the most common numbers worn by a Welshman.
Carlisle United 1-3 Leeds United
Leeds reclaimed the second automatic promotion spot after their own win and Millwall’s draw.
You can’t blame Carlisle’s Jason Price though, for not helping parent club Millwall. It’s not easy to score goals from the treatment room. Jason has a hamstring injury, hamstrings having now taken over from backs as the most popular Welsh injury.
Sanchez Watt didn’t get his first start for Leeds after all. He didn’t even get to come off the bench. It’s tough being a Welsh striker in Leeds. Even if you’re technically English.
Charlton Athletic 1-0 Colchester United
Charlton look almost certain of a play-off place after beating rivals Colchester United. Colchester are three points behind the play-off place. It must be tough for Colchester, dropping out of the play-offs at the last minute while Norwich City win the League with COLCHESTER’S manager.
Grant Basey won’t play for Charlton again this season because of an ankle ligament injury. Colchester’s Lee Beevers (knee) probably won’t play again either the way he’s going. Thomas Bender was on Colchester’s bench though.
Gillingham 1-1 Brighton & Hove Albion
If Gillingham are hoping to stay up on their home form, maybe I should point out that drawing with relegation rivals Brighton is not that way to go about it. It’s called relegation form. Having a keeper who can save penalties also won’t help much although it was quite helpful this time.
Andrew Crofts was back in Brighton’s team after missing the last match for family reasons. He received a warm welcome from the fans of his former club Gillingham. It doesn’t say how the Brighton fans received him but no news is good news where your own fans are concerned.
Hartlepool United 3-0 Stockport County
Hartlepool gave their survival chances a huge boost when they beat Stockport – and relegated them in the process.
Owain fon Williams was in goal for Stockport and he did really well to keep the score down.
Huddersfield Town 4-3 Walsall
Huddersfield beating Walsall was annoying enough - Huddersfield are far too close to Millwall for comfort. But beating them with two goals in the final minute (although admittedly a minute that was actually six minutes) was really quite cruel. And if I think it’s cruel, imagine how the poor Walsall fans are feeling. If you must beat someone 4-3, try to do it earlier next time.
Rhys Weston’s hamstring has gone again so he was gone too. Mark Bradley got to come on after 81 minutes and two minutes later Walsall were ahead. (Of course if you’re going to get technical they didn’t stay ahead but never mind that.)

League One Fixtures 13th April Part 2
Huddersfield Town v Walsall
Huddersfield need to win to be sure of staying in the play-off places – and even that won’t be enough if they win 1-0 and Colchester United win 5-0. Walsall have won their last two games – but they weren’t exactly against two of the best sides in the League.
Rhys Weston will probably miss out again due to a hamstring injury. Mark Bradley will be on the bench.
Leyton Orient v Norwich City
Leyton Orient are just one point clear of safety. Norwich won’t win promotion this time but a win could put them twelve points ahead of Leeds.
Norwich have a number of injury problems so maybe Owain Tudur Jones and Josh Dawkin will get into the squad. Or is that just wishful thinking?
Milton Keynes Dons v Oldham Athletic
MK Dons are ten points from the play-offs with only fifteen points to play for – they could do it but they won’t. Oldham are five points from the relegation zone.
Jermaine Easter will be hoping for a start and a goal for MK Dons – he hasn’t scored in the last three games after a good, if not quite prolific spell of goals and assists.
Joe Jacobson probably won’t be fit for Oldham.
Southend United v Brentford
Southend remain in the bottom four, four points from safety so they’ll really want to win against a Brentford side who have beaten play-off hopefuls Huddersfield Town recently but also only managed to draw against strugglers Exeter City and Oldham Athletic.
Lewis Price will probably be on the bench for Brentford but he might not as Brentford have more than five loanees.
Tranmere Rovers v Wycombe Wanderers
Tranmere might not be deep in trouble but they’ve definitely got their feet wet. A win over Wycombe, who are in deep trouble – seven points adrift - would lift them out of the relegation zone.
Ash Taylor will probably play for Tranmere.
Yeovil Town v Millwall
Yeovil are seven points clear of trouble at the moment. Usually when that happens they start losing again, which would be great news for Millwall, who will be hoping to remain in second place. Only a win will guarantee it.
Gavin Williams has impressed for Yeovil since joining on loan from Bristol City. Maybe the red card wasn’t quite so impressive but the three goals and three assists have been very welcome. But Terry Skiverton likes to say Gavin has scored ‘four goals in three games’. Technically one was an own goal and it’s only three games if you ignore the three games when he was suspended but I like Skiverton’s thinking. So let’s call it four goals and two assists.
Gavin’s loan has now been extended until the end of the season and I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t start. Either way he’s brilliant and Bristol City were mad to loan him out.
Shaun MacDonald is likely to be in the starting line-up too but Arron Davies could be out of the squad again as he is one of at least six loanees. Poor Arron, he was so happy when he managed to find a loophole in the League rules… but even the biggest loopholes have a catch. Nathan Jones could also be in Yeovil’s squad.
Millwall’s Jason Price is on loan at Carlisle United. They face Leeds United this week so Millwall will be hoping Jason can beat them and give them some breathing space. But Jason’s hamstring injury could prevent him from playing.
Huddersfield need to win to be sure of staying in the play-off places – and even that won’t be enough if they win 1-0 and Colchester United win 5-0. Walsall have won their last two games – but they weren’t exactly against two of the best sides in the League.

League One Results 10th April Part 2
Oldham Athletic 2-1 Bristol Rovers
Oldham moved three points further from the relegation zone as they beat on-form Bristol Rovers, who probably won’t get into the play-offs now.
Oldham were without injured defender Joe Jacobson but Byron Anthony played at right back for Bristol Rovers, with Ben Swallow coming off the bench.
Southampton 1-0 Charlton Athletic
Southampton’s single goal was enough for victory over Charlton, who could still get automatic promotion.
Lloyd James was on the bench for Southampton. Charlton’s Grant Basey is out with an ankle ligament injury.
Stockport 1-3 Yeovil Town
The inevitable was confirmed on Saturday afternoon – Stockport will spend next season in League Two – if they can survive their financial problems. Yeovil moved seven points clear of the drop zone.
Owain fon Williams was in goal for Stockport – but I’d be surprised if he’s playing in League Two next season.
Gavin Wlliams was again in great form for Yeovil. As on his debut, he got an assist and a goal. On his debut, Gavin got a red card but this time he got a second goal instead, which was much better. Shaun MacDonald also played for Yeovil but Nathan Jones and loanee Arron Davies weren’t in the squad.
Walsall 2-1 Tranmere Rovers
Walsall moved further into mid-table safety but Tranmere are still in the bottom four.
Rhys Weston’s hamstring is causing him problems again so he missed this match. Mark Bradley was on the bench.
Ash Taylor did a great job for Tranmere, coming ever so close to a goal but he had to be substituted on 65 minutes after suffering a head wound.
Oldham moved three points further from the relegation zone as they beat on-form Bristol Rovers, who probably won’t get into the play-offs now.

League One Fixtures 10th April Part 2
Oldham Athletic v Bristol Rovers
Oldham are only two points outside the relegation zone but Bristol Rovers have a small chance of the play-offs so they probably aren’t in a generous mood.
Joe Jacobson might not play for Oldham again this season.
Byron Anthony is back after a two-match suspension. He could go straight back into the side but Bristol Rovers have coped without him, just about. Ben Swallow started the last match so maybe he’ll keep his place.
Southampton v Charlton Athletic
Southampton and Charlton were relegated from the Championship together last season but Southampton’s points deduction means they’re very unlikely to go back up together. A win for Southampton could help keep them together for another season as Charlton fight to get back into the automatic promotion picture.
Lloyd James is probably most likely to be on the bench for Southampton. Grant Basey (ankle) won’t play again for Charlton this season.
Stockport County v Yeovil Town
Stockport could be relegated this weekend if Oldham Athletic, Leyton Orient and Tranmere rovers win and I’ve done my maths right. Yeovil could still go down with them if they’re not careful.
Owain fon Williams will play in goal for Stockpot.
Loanee Gavin Williams will stay at Yeovil until the end of the season. He and Shaun MacDonald are likely to keep their places but Arron Davies could be left out again due to the ‘five loanee’ rule, which hasn’t been great news for Welsh players this year. I bet it was thought up by an English person. Nathan Jones could be on the bench again.
Walsall v Tranmere Rovers
Tranmere are in the relegation places so they’ll be hoping to beat Walsall, who are probably safe with little to play for.
Rhys Weston is likely to start for Walsall with Mark Bradley on the bench. Walsall manager Chris Hutchings says he has already made a decision about which players will still be at the club next season – and Mark is one he could let go.
Ash Taylor will probably play for Tranmere.

League One Results 5th April Part 2
Hartlepool United 2-0 Brighton & Hove Albion
A win for Hartlepool puts them four points above the relegation zone. Brighton too probably should start worrying again as they’re only three points ahead of Hartlepool now.
Andrew Crofts was unable to play for Brighton due to ‘family reasons’. I really hope everything’s okay.
Norwich City 2-1 Stockport County
Norwich remain nine points clear of the top of the table – but that won’t guarantee them promotion. Just ask Leeds United. Stockport probably did rather well to lose to the league leaders by only one goal. Plenty of teams haven’t.
Owain fon Williams was in goal for Stockport.
Southampton 2-1 Leyton Orient
If Southampton win their game in hand, they’ll only be five points from the play-offs. It’s not impossible anymore. Leyton Orient remain in trouble but I don’t think Geraint Williams was the problem. It was their inability to take Nicky Adams on loan again. So it was only Geraint’s fault if he was mean to Nicky and he didn’t want to go back but the impression I got was that Nicky was happy to go but Leicester City said they needed him.
Lloyd James was on the bench for Southampton.
Swindon Town 3-0 Tranmere Rovers
Swindon remain in the second automatic promotion place after a great run of form but whether they finish there or not could depend on whether they manage to beat rivals Millwall in the final game of the season.
Billy Bodin wasn’t on the bench for Swindon but Tranmere’s own teenage Welsh star, Ash Taylor, played the full match.
Walsall 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers
Walsall got another win to help halt their downward spiral, whilst making it even more difficult for Wycombe to get out of trouble – although they could still do it, just as Walsall could still go down.
Rhys Weston was unlucky not to win a penalty for Walsall. Mark Bradley came off the bench after 83 minutes.
Yeovil Town 1-2 Leeds United
Leeds’ automatic promotion hopes remained alive after they got a rare win. Yeovil however are in trouble again.
Gavin Williams returned from his three-match suspension and went straight into Yeovil’s starting line-up, despite fighting with at least six other players for one of the five squad places that can be allocated to loanees. This match wasn’t as eventful as his last match, where he got a goal and an assist before being sent off, but he played well and did get the assist for Yeovil’s goal.
Shaun MacDonald, another Welsh loanee, also played the full match for Yeovil but loanee Arron Davies was again left out. Assistant manager Nathan Jones was on the bench.
Sanchez Watt made an 88-minute appearance from Leeds’ bench. I don’t think Leeds have quite got the hang of giving their young loanees first-team football. They kept leaving Sam Vokes on the bench too when he was on loan from Wolves.
A win for Hartlepool puts them four points above the relegation zone. Brighton too probably should start worrying again as they’re only three points ahead of Hartlepool now.
Andrew Crofts was unable to play for Brighton due to ‘family reasons’. I really hope everything’s okay.

League One Fixtures 5th April Part 2
Hartlepool United v Brighton & Hove Albion
Hartlepool are just two points outside the relegation zone. Brighton were there once but now they’re only three points away from the top half of the table.
Brighton captain Andrew Crofts has been a key figure for Brighton as they’ve pulled away from danger. He really has. Ask the manager if you don’t trust me.
Norwich City v Stockport County
The top side face the bottom side. A home win looks like the only possible result but Norwich have a suspended goalkeeper and will be forced to field a youngster (when I say youngster he’s only six months younger than me but for a goalkeeper, he’s young).
And Stockport’s goalkeeper Owain fon Williams actually isn’t all that bad.
I would love Owain Tudur Jones and Josh Dawkin to get into Norwich’s squad but I don’t think they will, even though both have been doing well in the reserves. I wonder if either of them can play in goal.
Southampton v Leyton Orient
Southampton continue to have a go at getting to the play-offs (Leeds did it with a points deduction but they didn’t get through and still haven’t), while Leyton Orient face life without their Welsh former manager Geraint Williams.
Lloyd James is likely to be in Southampton’s squad but if it’s true he’s going to need an operation, he probably won’t start. But he still seems to get picked ahead of Anthony Pulis.
Swindon Town v Tranmere Rovers
Swindon are in second place but need a win to ensure they stay there. They face Tranmere, who are fighting for the lives, as the saying goes. And they’re currently winning the battle.
Billy Bodin was probably only on Swindon’s bench recently to cover injuries but I’m sure it won’t be the last time he’s in the squad.
Tranmere also have a young Welshman in their ranks: Ash Taylor has been one of their best players this season.
Walsall v Wycombe Wanderers
Wycombe look like they’re down and there’s still a small chance Walsall could join them.
Rhys Weston will probably start for Walsall with Mark Bradley on the bench.
Hartlepool are just two points outside the relegation zone. Brighton were there once but now they’re only three points away from the top half of the table.

League One Results 3rd April
Leeds United 0-3 Swindon Town
Swindon won the match to claim second spot at the expense of Millwall. Leeds are now fourth and although they still have a good chance of automatic promotion, they will need to turn around the poor form that has seen them lose a 12-point lead at the top of the table.
Sanchez Watt, on loan from Arsenal, was on the bench for Leeds but he didn’t get onto the pitch.
Milton Keynes Dons 0-1 Charlton Athletic
MK Dons’ play-off hopes really do look over now but Charlton have turned their bad form around and still have a good chance of automatic promotion.
Jermaine Easter played the full match for Leeds but it wasn’t a happy Easter for the Dons, he forced a good save from Charlton’s keeper but couldn’t find the back of the net. Charlton were without ankle ligament victim Grant Basey.
Southend United 0-0 Yeovil Town
Yeovil are beginning to look precarious again after only managing a draw – although they are in a much better position than 22nd-placed Southend.
Shaun MacDonald was one player who came close to breaking the deadlock for Yeovil but it didn’t happen. Nathan Jones was on Yeovil’s bench but there was no sign of Arron Davies – Yeovil have six loan players but could only use five and Arron was the unlucky one. Gavin Williams served the final match of his three-match ban.
Stockport County 1-1 Walsall
Stockport continued to fight against relegation and to be fair they’re not as close to it as some of the other bottom teams in the four leagues. But Walsall, resigned to finishing mid-table after a good play-off challenge earlier in the season, wouldn’t let them have more than a point.
Owain fon Williams played in goal for Stockport. Rhys Weston was in defence for Walsall and there was also a late substitue appearance for Mark Bradley.

League One Fixtures 3rd April
Brighton & Hove Albion OFF Southampton
This match is off as it’s already been played. Which seems fair enough to me.
Carlisle United OFF Bristol Rovers
See above.
Leeds United v Swindon Town
Leeds could lose top spot tonight of Millwall beat Brentford – and with Swindon on such good form, there’s no guarantee Leeds will get it back again tomorrow.
Sanchez Watt has signed for Leeds on loan from Arsenal but it yet to feature, although he’s expected to play some part in this match.
Billy Bodin could be on the bench for Swindon. Billy has been offered a professional contract with the club and his manager thinks he has a big future.
Milton Keynes Dons v Charlton Athletic
MK Dons aren’t completely out of the play-off reckoning but it’s not looking likely. Charlton can probably hang onto their play-off spot but you can never be sure in football.
Jermaine Easter’s target before the season started was to reach twenty goals – and he’s done it. He’s only the second MK Dons player to score 20 goals in the same season. I wonder what his new target is. Grant Basey has started rehabilitation work on his ankle injury. but he won’t play for Charlton again this season.
Oldham Athletic v Gillingham
Oldham are only two points outside the relegation zone so a win would be very useful – and very possibly, as Gillingham have only six points from their away games this season, all from draws.
Oldham have sent Daniel Nardiello back to Blackpool as his hamstring is likely to keep him out for the rest of the season. Oldham also have Joe Jacobson on the injury list.
Southend United v Yeovil Town
A win for Southend could take them out of the bottom four and Yeovil aren’t looking quite as safe as they were either – they’re now just six points outside the relegation zone.
Yeovil defender and assistant manager Nathan Jones says his side have a number of niggles – possibly including himself, as he hasn’t been in the matchday squad for a while – but nothing too serious.
This will be the final game of Gavin Williams’ ban after he was sent off during an eventful debut for Yeovil. Arron Davies is in which a good chance of starting alongside Shaun MacDonald.
Stockport County v Walsall
Stockport have had a bad season but they’re not relegated yet and they won’t be even if they lose this match. They could in theory finish mid-table although it’s probably impossible for the fixtures to work out in their favour.
Owain fon Williams should play in goal for Stockport. Rhys Weston is likely to start in defence for Walsall with Mark Bradley on the bench.
Tranmere Rovers OFF Norwich City
This fixture was moved to the preceding day.

League One Fixtures 27th March Part 2
Exeter City v Walsall
A win for Exeter could take them out of the relegation places. Walsall are set to finish mid-table.
Richard Duffy and Rob Edwards are likely to start for Exeter while a recall for goalkeeper Andy Marriott can’t be impossible. Stuart Fleetwood could be on the bench.
Rhys Weston returned from his calf injury midweek but he was only fit enough to sit on the bench with Mark Bradley.
Gillingham v Milton Keynes Dons
Milton Keynes Dons aren’t impossible for the play-offs but they need to win this match. They probably wish they were playing Gillingham away instead of home.
Jermaine Easter is likely to play for MK Dons.
Hartlepool United v Swindon Town
Hartlepool could be in the relegation zone if they don’t win this. Swindon are up in the play-offs and will stay there even if they lose.
Billy Bodin could be on the bench for Swindon again.
Huddersfield Town v Charlton Athletic
Huddersfield will be in the play-off zone if they win and Colchester United lose. Charlton Athletic have picked up a bit since their recent disappointing form.
Grant Basey has started rehabilitation on his ankle injury but he won’t play for Charlton again this season.
Millwall v Stockport County
If Millwall win and Leeds lose, Millwall could be in the top two on goal difference. Considering that Millwall are playing the bottom club and Leeds the top club, it could happen but it would require a big win and a big defeat.
Owain fon Williams will play in goal for Stockport.
Norwich City v Leeds United
League leaders Norwich face a side that were once about twelve points clear at the top of the table, but are now eight points behind them.
Rhoys Wiggins did return from his loan to Bournemouth but as Bournemouth finally managed to pay their tax bill and are allowed to sign players on non-emergency loan terms, Rhoys has been able to extend his loan again, which I’m sure he’s very happy about, and not just because he loves Bournemouth. Owain Tudur Jones hasn’t even been on the bench since returning from his loan to Yeovil Town.
Arsenal’s Sanchez Watt has signed for Leeds on loan. He has also played for Southend United this season.
A win for Exeter could take them out of the relegation places. Walsall are set to finish mid-table.
