Simon Church was certainly one of the men of the match as Championship-strugglers Reading won over one of the most successful clubs in Britain. His tireless running – mentioned several times by the commentators – must have played a part, even though he didn’t score either of the goals this time.

Newcastle United 3-0 Plymouth Argyle (replay)
Plymouth’s result was sadly more predictable than Newcastle’s but there is nothing wrong with losing to the league leaders. At least when they must be at least 200 miles away from you. Carl Fletcher was Plymouth’s captain and he did come close to scoring.
