Champions' League Fixture 31st March

Arsenal v Barcelona
Arsenal aim to knock the Champions out of the Champions’ League.
Arsenal are still having a bit of an injury crisis and it’s no surprise to see Cesc Fabregas is struggling after his behaviour at the weekend. He seemed to get a bit confused about who were most important: Birmingham or Barcelona. Aaron Ramsey is obviously out.

Championship Result 28th March

Newcastle United 2-0 Nottingham Forest
A disappointing result for Nottingham Forest, who have a lot of work to do if they’re to get automatic promotion. Newcastle, on the other hand, are all but up.
Chris Gunter started – and finished – the match for Nottingham Forest but top scorer Robert Earnshaw didn’t come off the bench until the 72nd minute.

Premier League Result 28th March

Manchester City 3-0 Wigan Athletic
Manchester City are now just two points behind Tottenham Hotspur in fifth place. They’re also only two points ahead of Liverpool but Liverpool have played more games.
Craig Bellamy was rested for the first forty-five minutes. He doesn’t seem to have got any of the assists for Carlos Tevez’ late hat-trick but I’m sure he had something to do with it.
Wigan’s Jason Koumas was exactly where I expected him to be. Not in the squad.

League Two Fixture 30th March

Oldham Athletic v Brentford
Oldham will be hoping to use their games in hand to get out of trouble. Brentford are probably okay now but they might want to win anyway.
Daniel Nardiello is probably still out with his hamstring injury and Vital Oldham says Joe Jacobson is also injured. Lewis Price might not even be on the bench as Brentford have got too many loanees again. They should just learn to count to five.

Championship Fixtures 30th March

Cardiff City v Leicester City
The thing about tables is they keep changing. Two weeks ago, Leicester were looking like play-off certainties while Cardiff were looking they could be turfed out of the play-offs by Sheffield United or Blackpool or Reading. Now it’s more like the other round, although it’s Blackpool and Doncaster who Leicester most need to watch out for. They’ll still be in the play-offs after this match though
Cardiff’s weekend Man of the Match Darcy Blake deserves to continue his impressive run in the team but several players are now back from injury and Darcy could find himself on the bench despite his impressive form. But he’ll be in good company Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig have both spent time on the bench recently and they’ve also been great when needed
In another two days, I’ll be able to say ‘Joe Ledley hopes to be back this month’.
Andy King has been back on the scoresheet recently but this time, he’ll be hoping to put it in the right net again although the own goal really wasn’t his fault. It was a combination of the pitch and the goalkeeper and he’s not groundstaff or a goalkeeping coach it’s really not his fault. And the manager really should play Nicky Adams. He wouldn’t let Leyton Orient have him back so he must want him for something.

Plymouth Argyle v Barnsley
Plymouth aim to do what Barnsley did and get up into the safety of mid-table. But they’re leaving it kind of late.
Plymouth are without Carl Fletcher, who hurt his knee in the seventh minute against Queen’s Park Rangers.

Champions' League Fixture 30th March

Bayern Munich v Manchester United
Ryan Giggs got his first start since recovering from a broken arm at the weekend so he could start again. If not, he’ll probably still be in the squad unless Sir Alex Ferguson starts resting his best players again.

Championship Results 27th March Part 2

Peterborough United 0-1 Bristol City
Peterborough’s survival hopes grew even fainter as Bristol City got a much-needed three points.
Peterborough were still without the injured Craig Morgan (ankle). And after this season, they’ll be without their manager who has publically said he has no interest in hanging around.
Christian Ribeiro again started for Bristol City and showed he’s pretty good in attack as well as defence.

Plymouth Argyle 0-2 Blackpool
Plymouth are another who don’t look like escaping. They’re only six points from safety though so it’s not completely impossible. Blackpool look like the team most likely to sneak into the play-0ffs. They’re only three points away and they have a better goal difference than Leicester City and Swansea City.
Carl Fletcher worryingly left the field in the 7th minute. Blackpool were without their Welsh players too, with Rob Edwards on the bench and the rest injured.

Reading 1-1 West Bromwich Albion

A few months ago, Reading would have been thrilled with this result. Now they’re like a completely new team and West Brom’s 86th minute equaliser must have been a big disappointment.
Simon Church came off the bench aftrt 65 minutes and nearly got Reading a second.

Swansea City 0-0 Ipswich Town
It took Swansea a long time to lose their unbeaten run in 2010. But now they have gone five games without a win.
Ashley Williams could have won it for Swansea late on but he didn’t. However there was some god news for Swansea. Joe Allen made his comeback from a knee injury after 66 minutes. David Cornell and David Cotterill were also on the bench.

Watford 1-1 Middlesbrough

This result didn’t do either side much good. Watford remain in relegation trouble while Middlesbrough no longer look like possible play-off contenders.
Danny Coyne was on the bench again for Boro but Rhys Williams played the full game and played a part in Boro’s goal.

Championship Results 27th March Part 1

Barnsley 0-1 Doncaster Rovers
Doncaster kept their play-off campaign going with an away win over Barnsley, who look set to finish in mid-table but have done well considering their bad start to the season.
Gareth Roberts and John Oster both played for Doncaster but Brian Stock is still out with a back injury.

Coventry City 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday
Coventry are now nine points behind the play-offs so I wouldn’t expect them to get in now although maybe next season, if they can have a good start. Sheffield Wednesday still have something very important to play for – survival.
Freddy Eastwood was given the start he wanted but I think maybe his manager wasn’t very happy with his lack of goals, he was taken off at half-time.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Cardiff City
Cardiff have stopped looking vulnerable. They’re up to fourth now and, more importantly, ahead of Swansea City. Crystal Palace are now four points from safety.
Darcy Blake played the full match for Cardiff again. Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig were on the bench. Adam very sensibly says he’d love Ryan Giggs to play for Wales agin.

Derby County 1-0 Leicester City
Derby’s win lifted them to nine points away from the relegation zone. They needed to win – and beating Leicester City is probably one of the sweetest victories.
Unfortunately, Derby’s goal came from Leicester’s Andy King. He passed back towards his keeper, who made no attempt to gather it, only for it to hit a bump in the grass and roll into the goal. I don’t know why the keeper was letting it run in the first place. Andy made up for it later when he cleared a goal attempt rather than helping it into the net.
Robbie Savage kept his place in Derby’s starting line-up. Having already had a go in goal, he tried his hand at refereeing too. At last according to Neil Warnock, whose side Queen’s Park Rangers played Derby midweek.
Nicky Adams was on the bench for Leicester.

Premier League Results 27th March Part 2

West Ham United 0-1 Stoke City
West Ham remain in trouble as manager Gianfranco Zola is openly wondering if he wants to stay in the job. Stoke are now up in 10th place.
Danny Gabbidon was left on the bench today but Jack Collison didn’t even make the squad due to his knee problems.
Ryan Shawcross was unable to play for Stoke as he has an ankle injury but Stoke still had Danny Collins to play in defence and it was his pass that led to a remarkable slalom run and goal for Ricardo Fuller.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Everton

Wolves are now five points clear of the relegation zone while Everton are only two points behind what could become a Europa League place.
David Jones got another start for Wolves and turned in an impressive performance. Wayne Hennessey was on the bench but Dave Edwards and Sam Vokes weren’t.

Premier League Results 27th March Part 1

Birmingham City 1-1 Arsenal
I don’t care what they’re saying. Arsenal are still in it. And I hope there will be a Premier League medal for Aaron Ramsey at the end of the season.
Arsenal really didn’t look themselves in this match and they’re now relying on Manchester United and Chelsea to drop quite a few points. But in some ways this was the hardest game. Birmingham are just the sort of team Arsenal struggle against.

Bolton Wanderers 4-0 Manchester United
Bolton are looking safe now but they were no match for Manchester United.
Sam Ricketts is a right back but he hasn’t played there for a while. He’s been used more at left back and centre back. He didn’t have his best game for Bolton so I think he must have got a bit confused about which side of the pitch he was on.
Ryan Giggs got his first start for Manchester United since breaking his arm. He got the assist for the first goal.

Chelsea 7-1 Aston Villa
I don’t think I want to say too much about this one but Chelsea’s new goal difference isn’t exactly good news for Chelsea. As for Villa, they’re having their customary end of season slump.
With Petr Cech fit again, there was no place on the bench for Rhys Taylor, who might be still injured in any case.
James Collins played for Villa and conceded one of the penalties but I’d like to think it was very very harsh. He has since grovelled to the Villa fans on Twitter.

Hull City 2-0 Fulham
I like Fulham and I’m thrilled to see them going so well in the Europa League and I’m sure Hull are very happy to be better than Juventus. But I really wanted Hull to stay up and these three points will help.
Boaz Myhill wasn’t tested that often in the Hull goal but he made some good saves when needed
Simon Davies played in midfield for Fulham and could have scored for them. Jimmy Bullard – now there’s a player I wish was Welsh – opened the scoring for Hull against the club they bought him from. Yes, I think he did celebrate. But for him, it was a very mild celebration.

Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Portsmouth

Tottenham are now five points clear in fourth place while Portsmouth could find themselves relegated as early as next week.
Another game, another win for Gareth Bale. He’s gone from not winning to being unable to stop winning. If that’s going to be the case from now on, I really hope he’s rested against Arsenal. Gareth got another assist.

Championship Fixture 29th March

Newcastle United v Nottingham Forest
Newcastle are virtually promoted but Forest won’t have completely given up their hopes of re-joining them in the automatic promotion places. But Forest do need to sort out their away form, ideally in this match.
Chris Gunter will probably start for Forest but Robert Earnshaw didn’t score in his last match so he could be replaced.

Premier League Fixture 29th March

Manchester City v Wigan Athletic
It looks to be between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur for the fourth Champions’ League spot – and Tottenham have to play all the top three. But it still might be a good idea for City to win their game in hand, as they are a way behind Tottenham.
Craig Bellamy is likely to start for Manchester City unless Roberto Mancini is still pissed off about whatever he said to him in the tunnel after their last match. Wigan are missing the influential Charles N’Zogbia but even that might not be considered sufficient reason to bring Jason Koumas back into the squad.

Sunday, 28 March 2010

ohnstone Paint Trophy Final fixture

Carlisle United v Southampton
Last season, the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy was won by a team who are now in the Blue Square Premier – Luton Town. This year, two of League One’s mid-table teams fight it out. Both have been on great form recently.
Jason Price won’t play for Carlisle as he has already featured in the competition for Millwall. And Southampton have some cup-tied players of their own which increases the chances of a start for Lloyd James.

Championship Fixture 28th March

Sheffield United v Scunthorpe United
Sheffield United still have a chance of the play-offs but Scunthorpe’s form has picked up recently, although they are still in relegation trouble. However Scunthorpe do struggle away.
Ched Evans is still out for Sheffield United with a collarbone injury.

Premier League Fixture 28th March

Burnley v Blackburn Rovers
Burnley started the season unstoppable at home whilst Blackburn Rovers really struggled away. But an away win looks like a real possibility.
Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson is still out so Jason Brown will be between the sticks again.

Friday, 26 March 2010

League Two Fixtures 27th March Part 2

Lincoln City v Northampton Town
Lincoln look pretty safe but Northampton will need to win to ensure no-one steals their play-off spot.
David Stephens signed for Lincoln on loan from Norwich City while I wasn’t looking but I know about him now. He wasn’t in the squad for their last game but maybe he will be this time.
Peter Gilbert, who has been offered a new contract, will be in defence for Northampton and I’ve just realised Paul Walker has been on the bench for Northampton for weeks. There are over 100 Welsh players playing regularly in the football league, it’s not always easy to pick up on the new ones that come in. Well not if you’re me.

Macclesfield Town v Cheltenham Town
Macclesfield are starting to look in danger again but not as much as Cheltenham.
Macclesfield have injury problems and one of their injured players is a forward so maybe Matthew Tipton will get a start.
The Cheltenham manager says all his players are fit and presumably that includes Josh Low.

Morecambe v Torquay United
Morecambe still have a small chance of the play-offs but Torquay have a bigger chance of getting relegated.
Darren Moss will probably be on the bench for Morecambe.

Port Vale v Crewe Alexandra
Port Vale like to think they’re still in the play-off hunt and I do actually agree with them now. Crewe are set to finish mid-table.
Lewis Haldane has only scored three times in his 34 appearances for Port Vale and he’s determined to get a goal this time. Gareth Owen and Craig Davies should also be in the squad.

Shrewsbury Town v Darlington
Shrewsbury have been knocked off their play-off spot but they’re still only three points away. Darlington need a lot more than three points. Unfortunately, three points is the maximum available and probably more than they’re going to get.
Will Richards could be on the bench for Shrewsbury.

League Two Fixtures 27th March Part 1

Barnet v Burton Albion
A win for Burton could take them to two points behind the play-offs but it probably won’t. They might get the three points though as Barnet have a bit of a problem with winning.
Tony James is likely to play in defence for Burton.

Bournemouth v Accrington Stanley
Bournemouth have finally paid their tax bill and have consequently had their transfer embargo lifted.
Rhoys Wiggins had already returned to Bournemouth as he was only on an emergency loan and apparently there wasn’t an emergency anymore. But as Bournemouth are now free to sign players on non-emergency terms, Rhoys is back and should start.
Joe Partington was fit enough to make a substitute appearance in Bournemouth’s last match.
Accrington remain in with a chance of joining Bourmemouth in the play-off zone in time for the end of the season. Bournemouth were second but Rotherham United and Notts County kept winning their games in hand.

Bradford City v Dagenham & Redbridge
Bradford City have picked up since the arrival of their new manager but there’s nothing for them to do except to see how far up the table they can get. Possibly not very far, given Dagenham’s recent form.
Michael Flynn is likely to play for Bradford with Tony Roberts in goal for Dag & Red.

Chesterfield v Hereford United

Chesterfield remain strong in the play-off race while Hereford are still ten points clear of the relegation zone.
Robert Page should be in defence for Chesterfield with Mark Crossley on the bench. Ryan Green, Ryan Valentine and Darren Jones could all start for Hereford.

League One Fixtures 27th March Part 2

Exeter City v Walsall
A win for Exeter could take them out of the relegation places. Walsall are set to finish mid-table.
Richard Duffy and Rob Edwards are likely to start for Exeter while a recall for goalkeeper Andy Marriott can’t be impossible. Stuart Fleetwood could be on the bench.
Rhys Weston returned from his calf injury midweek but he was only fit enough to sit on the bench with Mark Bradley.

Gillingham v Milton Keynes Dons

Milton Keynes Dons aren’t impossible for the play-offs but they need to win this match. They probably wish they were playing Gillingham away instead of home.
Jermaine Easter is likely to play for MK Dons.

Hartlepool United v Swindon Town

Hartlepool could be in the relegation zone if they don’t win this. Swindon are up in the play-offs and will stay there even if they lose.
Billy Bodin could be on the bench for Swindon again.

Huddersfield Town v Charlton Athletic
Huddersfield will be in the play-off zone if they win and Colchester United lose. Charlton Athletic have picked up a bit since their recent disappointing form.
Grant Basey has started rehabilitation on his ankle injury but he won’t play for Charlton again this season.

Millwall v Stockport County
If Millwall win and Leeds lose, Millwall could be in the top two on goal difference. Considering that Millwall are playing the bottom club and Leeds the top club, it could happen but it would require a big win and a big defeat.
Owain fon Williams will play in goal for Stockport.

Norwich City v Leeds United
League leaders Norwich face a side that were once about twelve points clear at the top of the table, but are now eight points behind them.
Rhoys Wiggins did return from his loan to Bournemouth but as Bournemouth finally managed to pay their tax bill and are allowed to sign players on non-emergency loan terms, Rhoys has been able to extend his loan again, which I’m sure he’s very happy about, and not just because he loves Bournemouth. Owain Tudur Jones hasn’t even been on the bench since returning from his loan to Yeovil Town.
Arsenal’s Sanchez Watt has signed for Leeds on loan. He has also played for Southend United this season.

League One Fixtures 27th March Part 1

Brentford v Leyton Orient
Brentford are looking fairly solid in mid-table but Leyton Orient are in trouble again after a string of bad results.
Lewis Price will probably be on the bench for Brentford but Orient manager Geraint Williams was unable to re-sign Nicky Adams on loan from Leicester City.

Brighton & Hove Albion v Tranmere Rovers
Brighton are seven points clear of the relegation zone but Tranmere are safe by just one point.
Andrew Crofts is likely to play for Brighton and Tranmere will be glad to have Ash Taylor back from injury. Ash thinks Tranmere will be safe once they get to 50 points. It’s not going to happen tomorrow, Tranmere have 39 points.

Bristol Rovers v Southend United
Bristol Rovers have a habit of beating the big clubs and losing to the struggling ones, which would be a big help for Southend United.
Byron Anthony returned from injury to play for Bristol Rovers last weekend and is likely to play again if he’s still okay. Ben Swallow will be on the bench (and going on recent weeks, he might well stay on it)| but David Pipe is unlikely to be in the squad at all.
Southend’s former loanee Sanchez Watt from Arsenal has joined Leeds United.

Colchester United v Wycombe Wanderers
Colchester United are just about hanging onto their position in the play-offs but they’ll need to beat Wycombe to be sure of staying there.
Lee Beevers is still out for Colchester but Thomas Bender was on the bench last time and could be there again.

Championship Fixtures 27th March Part 3

Swansea City v Ipswich Town
Swansea aim to bounce back from being thrashed by Blackpool. Defender Ashley Williams says this will inspire Swansea to victory over Ipswich.
David Cotterill was substituted at half-time against Blackpool so he might not play for Swansea. Joe Allen (knee) and Jazz Richards probably won’t be back from injury. Lee Lucas is an option for defensive cover.

Watford v Middlesbrough
Watford have games in hand but they need to win them. Middlesbrough have been doing a lot better lately and could be difficult to beat.
Rhys Williams, who is hoping to play for Australia in the World Cup, is likely to start again for Middlesbrough but Danny Coyne has been dropped to the bench and is likely to stay there.

Championship Fixtures 27th March Part 2

Peterborough United v Bristol City
Peterborough continue to battle against the inevitable. Bristol City are looking out of the play-off picture but fairly safe.
Peterborough will be without Craig Morgan, who hasn’t recovered from an ankle injury.
Lewin Nyatanga is still out for Bristol City with an Achilles injury. Christian Ribeiro looks likely to keep his place in defence (and apparently Everton are after him) but James Wilson is on the treatment table with a knee injury.

Plymouth Argyle v Blackpool
Plymouth are another fighting for survival and they would love to get one over on Blackpool manager Ian Holloway, who dumped them for Leicester City. Blackpool remain the team most likely to catch Cardiff City and take their place in the play-off zone.
Carl Fletcher will play for Plymouth but Blackpool have Welsh injury problems. David Vaughan could return from an ankle injury but Neal Eardley is likely to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury. Rob Edwards is available but he’s been on the bench lately.

Preston North End v Queen’s Park Rangers
Both sides have changed their manager this season but QPR have done it more times. Unfortunately this result is about number of goals, not number of managers. Otherwise QPR would win by miles.
Paul Parry is out with a knee injury and won’t play again this season.

Reading v West Bromwich Albion
The last time Reading faced West Bromwich Albion, Reading knocked them out of the Cup, kicking them to the wayside where they ended up next to Liverpool. WBA will be up for revenge.
Simon Church has been great for Reading but so have all their other strikers so he’s likely to be on the bench again.

Championship Fixtures 27th March Part 1

Barnsley v Doncaster Rovers
Doncaster still have slight play-off hopes. Barnsley are halfway between the play-offs and the relegation places and are pretty much out of both.
Brian Stock probably won’t be ready to return from a back injury for another two weeks but he thinks Doncaster can still get into the play-offs. Gareth Roberts has had hamstring problems but he might be okay by now. But Barnsley will hope he’s not, acknowledging that he is a very good player. John Oster is fine though as far as I know and he thinks Doncaster can win.

Coventry City v Sheffield Wednesday
Coventry are going for the play-offs. And if Sheffield Wednesday don’t watch out, they could be in the play-offs next season. In League One.
Freddy Eastwood finally got a chance in the starting line-up against West Bromwich Albion. He didn’t score but Coventry were playing West Bromwich Albion.

Crystal Palace v Cardiff City
Crystal Palace were looking okay when they first had the ten-point deduction but it has now understandably affected their form. Cardiff are safely in the play-off zone for now but several teams are in position to take advantage if they keep slipping up.
Darcy Blake has done well in first central midfield, now central defence for Cardiff and deserves to stay in the team. Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig are likely to be among the substitutes. Aaron Morris has returned from his loan to Newport County and could be an option, having appeared on the bench earlier this season.
Joe Ledley is on the way back following his hip operations.

Derby County v Leicester City
Derby County are now six points above the relegation zone. And what better way to increase that than with a local(ish) derby? Leicester City are safely in the play-offs but seventeen points behind 2nd place.
Resting Robbie Savage didn’t really work for Derby so he’s likely to play no matter how tired he is.
Andy King is likely to stay in midfield after some commanding performances. Nicky Adams will be on the bench as Leyton Orient failed to entice him back.

Premier League Fixtures 27th March Part 2

Tottenham Hotspur v Portsmouth
This dress rehearsal for the FA Cup semi-final (I didn’t copy that line from BBC Sport, I thought of it myself and I’m so pissed off BBC Sport have already used it) will be a bit of a Portsmouth Old Boys Reunion. Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Niko Kranjcar, Younes Kaboul and manager Harry Redknapp were all at Portsmouth not so long ago – while Kevin-Prince Boateng and Ricardo Rocha were at Tottenham. Then there’s also Jamie O’Hara who’s on loan to Portsmouth from Tottenham but he’s not allowed to play.
Gareth Bale could be back at left back again for Tottenham after playing the second half there in the FA Cup match against Fulham. Gareth has been nominated for the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month Award. http://fansaward.givemefootball.com/vote Although it looks to me as though you can vote for any player, including some that haven’t been playing for their teams.

West Ham United v Stoke City
West Ham are back in trouble again but Stoke aren’t the best at winning away.
Danny Gabbidon is back from a muscle injury and could go back into the starting line-up. Jack Collison is still out with a knee injury.
Ryan Shawcross missed Stoke’s last game with an ankle problem and he could be out again. If so, Danny Collins is almost certain to play.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Everton
Having beaten West Ham midweek, Wolves face another tough test – Everton. Only Everton, rather than fighting for survival, are fighting for a place in the Europa League.
Dave Edwards has recovered from an ankle injury but it yet to make it into Wolves’ matchday squad, Sam Vokes has also been missing recently. Wayne Hennessey will be on the bench.
David Jones however is almost certain to start after a string of impressive performances.

Premier League Fixtures 27th March Part 1

Birmingham City v Arsenal
Arsenal need a win to keep their title hopes alive (well probably, losing matches hasn’t done them any harm so far) but they must do so without both their first-choice centre backs.
They are also without Aaron Ramsey, who has a broken leg, and Sanchez Watt, who has joined Leeds United on loan.

Bolton Wanderers v Manchester United
Bolton are probably safe – and good thing too because they’ll probably lose this match. Who knows though? Owen Coyle got a home win over Man Utd when he was manager of Burnley.
Sam Ricketts was on the bench for Bolton’s last game but he came on following a defensive sending off and is likely to start this match. And at right back too, his natural position.
Ryan Giggs made his return from a broken arm as a substitute midweek and could be ready to start. Ryan has said he’d consider playing for Wales again if he was called up but Sir Alex Ferguson says Ryan was talking rubbish. He’s probably in a mood because Wales beat Scotland.

Chelsea v Aston Villa
Aston Villa will be hoping to bounce back from their recent draw with Sunderland – but they may find Stamford Bridge isn’t the best place for that sort of thing.
Rhys Taylor might or might not have recovered from his injury but with Petr Cech now fit, his first-team chances seen to be gone. For now.
James Collins is struggling with an injury but so are half his Villa team-mates so he could play anyway..

Hull City v Fulham

Hull are in big trouble after Portsmouth’s sneaky last-minute win over them. Fulham struggle away from home and seemed tired in the second half of their FA Cup match midweek after a very busy schedule.
Boaz Myhill will be in goal for Hull. Simon Davies has played a lot of games lately for Fulham so he’s probably due a rest – but Fulham might need him.

Championship Results 24th March

Cardiff City 1-1 Sheffield United
Both sides kept their play-off hopes alive but Cardiff in particular will be disappointed not to win.
Darcy Blake did a great job in central defence for Cardiff. Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig were both on the bench.

Leicester City 1-2 Reading
Reading continue their play-off push with victory over Leicester – whom they could face again if they manage to get to the play-offs. It doesn’t look that likely but they’ve managed to go from 23rd to 11th in two months – and there are two months more to go before the season ends.
Andy King was very, very unlucky not to score for Reading as their keeper pulled off an impossible save, keeping the score at 1-1. Nicky Adams was on the bench.
Simon Church came off Reading’s bench after 64 minutes and was in the process of making a fine run on goal when he won the penalty that won the match in the 92nd minute.

West Bromwich Albion 1-0 Coventry City
The win put West Brom eight points clear of third place. Coventry played well and came close to an equaliser but it didn’t happen.
Freddy Eastwood finally got back into the starting line-up for Coventry – what a shame he was playing against a team who will be in the Premier League next season (and most likely the Championship the season after that). Freddy says he’s been in the manager’s office, asking why he’s not in the team. I think it’s because he got injured and then the team started playing well without him but maybe there’s a conspiracy going on, that would be more interesting.

FA Cup Sixth Round Replay Result 25th March

Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Fulham
When the teams went inside for half-time, there looked to be only one winner. And it wasn’t Tottenham. The home team looked panicky while Fulham kept the ball patiently and came out for the second half with a 1-0 lead to show from it.
But after the break, things changed. Fulham weren’t bad but Tottenham were all over them, full of pace and creativity and… actually I’m an Arsenal supporter, I shouldn’t be saying good things about Tottenham. Not even when they deserve it.
Gareth Bale started the match at left midfield for Fulham but was moved to left back at half-time when Benoit Assou-Ekotto was substituted. He was strong in attack from most positions and was unlucky his free kick didn’t go in.
Simon Davies looked strong for Fulham in the first half and could have scored.

Premier League Results 24th March

Aston Vila 1-1 Sunderland
Aston Villa dropped more points in their quest for Champions’ League football. They could still do it – they’re only four points behind Tottenham Hotspur – but I’m wondering if this could be a repeat of last season, where they started brilliantly, only to fizzle out at about this time.
James Collins played the full match for Aston Villa despite struggling with an injury. He should have scored but Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon was on exceptional form again. I’m so glad he wasn’t in goal for Scotland when they played Wales. I’m not saying Wales wouldn’t have won but maybe they wouldn’t have won 3-0.

Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Birmingham City
Birmingham have dropped away slightly following a brilliant start to the season but they still look set to exceed most people’s expectations. Blackburn are starting to look safe too.
Jason Brown played in goal for Blackburn for the third consecutive game – his second as a starter – and after drawing with Chelsea, he got his first win of the season against Birmingham. And it was very much deserved – he was brilliant. Nice to see that a keeper who is only an afterthought in Wales squads is beating arguably England’s best goalkeeper.

Manchester City 0-2 Everton
It was all in Manchester City’s hands. They were behind fourth place but with games in hand. Now the games have been played and they’re still only fifth. Everton have played a game more than Aston Villa, in the place above them, but they sneaked into fifth place last season, maybe this season they could sneak seventh. At least.
Craig Bellamy is in trouble again. He played the full match, then got into trouble in the tunnel. But he was only following the example set by his manager.

Thursday, 25 March 2010

League Two Results 23rd March

Accrington Stanley 0-2 Burton Albion
Burton got back to winning ways with victory over play-off contenders Accrington Stanley.
Tony James played the full match for Burton and did very well to block an attempt on goal by Accrington.

Bradford City 0-0 Notts County
Bradford held second-places Notts County to a draw.
Michael Flynn came close to breaking the deadlock for Bradford and was arguably their most threatening player.

Rotherham United 3-1 Macclesfield Town
Macclesfield lost 3-1 for the second time in the space of two days as Rotherham moved up to third.
Matthew Tipton came off the bench for Macclesfield four minutes from the end.

League One Results 23rd March

Colchester United 3-3 Brentford
Brentford were 2-0 up after 17 minutes but Colchester kept on equalising. Colchester are now just four points from seventh place while Brentford move a bit further from the relegation zone.
Colchester’s Lee Beevers is still out with a knee injury although he was credited with a Mark Beevers effort for Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend. Lewis Price was on the bench for Brentford.

Southampton 3-2 Hartlepool United

Another win for Southampton leaves Hartlepool United just two points outside the relegation zone.
Lloyd James was on the bench for Southampton.

Southend United 3-0 Walsall
Southend won for the first time in ten games – and if they can do it again in their next game, they could get out of the relegation zone.
Rhys Weston returned from his calf injury but was only fit enough for Walsall’s bench, which he shared with Mark Bradley.

Championship Results 23rd March Part 2

Middlesbrough 2-0 Preston North End
Middlesbrough are now just six points from the play-offs after beating Preston North End.
Danny Coyne was on the bench again for Middlesbrough as Brad Jones kept his place in goal. Rhys Williams returned from suspension and prevented Preston from getting a goal late on..
Preston were of course without Paul Parry (knee).

Nottingham Forest 2-0 Crystal Palace
Nottingham Forest kept their automatic promotion hopes alive while Crystal Palace continue to flounder in the bottom three.
Chris Gunter was moved to left back and had a lively game, with Robert Earnshaw doing well up front. He would have got an assist if Palace didn’t have such a good goalkeeper. He might also have scored if a Palace defender hadn’t handled the ball and got himself sent off. Rob says he doesn’t want Forest go to up through the play-offs – why finish 3rd when you could finish 2nd?

Queen’s Park Rangers 1-1 Derby County

A point each might be enough to keep QPR and Derby up but they’ll want to win a few more just in case.
Robbie Savage was rested for the last game due to tiredness (he’s an old man, you know) and manager Nigel Clough made the decision to bring him back to the starting line-up for this match. It paid off – Robbie’s free kick became the assist for Derby’s equaliser.

Scunthorpe United 4-0 Peterborough United

If Peterborough looked doomed before, losing to struggling Scunthorpe has made things even worse.
Peterborough are still without centre back Craig Morgan (ankle) and the fact one of their defenders was substituted after 26 minutes cannot be good news.

Championship Results 23rd March Part 1

Blackpool 5-1 Swansea City
It was Sky Sports News’ fault. If they hadn’t made such a big fuss about how Swansea don’t let in many goals, the result could have been very different. But as I’m a Cardiff fan I can’t say I’m overly upset by this result. It’s just a shame not one of Blackpool’s Welsh players played.
Before this match, Swansea were looking like certainties for the play-offs, while Blackpool’s own play-off hopes appeared to be over.
Swansea still look fairly comfortable, seven points ahead of 7th place but Blackpool are now just five points behind Cardiff City.
Neal Eardley and David Vaughan didn’t play for Blackpool due to hamstring and ankle injuries respectively. Rob Edwards was on the bench.
Ashley Williams and David Cotterill both started for Swansea but David’s half-time substitution has got me more than a little bit worried. David Cornell was on the bench but Jazz Richards missed out with injury

Bristol City 5-3 Barnsley
This result gave Bristol City a very valuable three points, which took them ten points above the drop zone – and also ten points behind the play-offs. Before this match, Barnsley were touted as promotion hopefuls but they’re now behind Bristol City on goal difference.
Bristol City still have reasons to be concerned about their defence but they’re attacking players were looking in good shape in this match. And they were without defender Lewin Nyatanga, who suffered an Achilles injury in the warm-up. Christian Ribeiro started his second successive match and got his first Man of the Match award..

Doncaster Rovers 0-1 Newcastle United
Doncaster actually acquitted themselves well against a team that were four divisions above them not that long ago. Plenty of teams have let Newcastle score more than once, and considering what the papers are saying about goalscorer Andy Carroll, I would certainly consider getting out of his way if he tried to score against me.
Doncaster’s Gareth Roberts was substituted just three minutes from the end of normal time. He was a doubt before the match with a hamstring problem. John Oster was a big attacking threat for Doncaster

Ipswich Town 0-2 Plymouth Argyle
Ipswich have been on good form lately so for Plymouth to beat them away is a very good – and necessary – three points for them.
Carl Fletcher started off the move that led to Plymouth’s first goal.

Premier League Results 23rd March

West Ham United 1-3 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolves got a deserved three points that takes them seven points clear of the relegation zone. As for West Ham, they are in serious trouble.
Neither Danny Gabbidon (muscle strain) nor Jack Collison (knee) were fit enough to return for West Ham.
David Jones was the only Welshman (okay Englishman but he’s eligible for Wales) to play for Wolves. He got the assists for the second and third goals and should have won Wolves a penalty. David sounded very threatening on Sky Sports News and the Guardian blog even called him ‘the excellent David Jones’ and who am I to argue with that. Wayne Hennessey was on the bench but Dave Edwards didn’t make the matchday squad and neither, for some reason, did Sam Vokes.

Tuesday, 23 March 2010

Championship Fixtures 24th March

Cardiff City v Sheffield United
Sheffield United are the team closest to Cardiff in terms of points but they have played one game more – and this obviously won’t change when they play each other.
Joe Ledley, shockingly, is already back in training for Cardiff after having two hip operations and could be back in the team in three weeks’ time. Darcy Blake deserves to keep his place in the starting line-up, while Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig should also be in the squad.
Ched Evans isn’t be ready to return from a collarbone injury for Sheffield United.

Leicester City v Reading

Leicester were brilliant in the first half of Sunday’s match against Coventry but this time, if they get a two-goal lead, they’ll be wanting to hang onto it but they’ll stay in the play-off places. Reading might even have a bit of a play-off run going themselves.
Andy King will keep his place in the side after two brilliant goals for Leicester against Coventry but Nicky Adams just hasn’t been able to get into the team. The rumour is Geraint Williams is interested in bringing him back for a second loan spell at Leyton Orient.
Simon Church is probably going to be on the bench for Reading. He does well when he’s picked but the other strikers won’t stop scoring.

West Bromwich Albion v Coventry City

WBA face the team who fought back from 2-0 down to get a point at the weekend. West Brom’s own promotion hopes look very good but Coventry could be going up with them through the play-offs.
Freddy Eastwood will most likely be on the bench for Coventry.

FA Cup Fixture 24th March

Tottenham Hotspur v Fulham (6th Round Replay)
Tottenham have been forced to play quite a few FA Cup replays lately, with Leeds United, Bolton Wanderers and now Fulham setting up a rematch. Fulham have just knocked out Juventus but Tottenham are very strong at home whereas Fulham are usually quite the opposite.
Gareth Bale is probably most likely to stay at left midfield for Tottenham. He’s been doing well there and there’s still a bit of an injury crisis in midfield. Simon Davies could play in midfield for Fulham but he might be due a rest.

Premier League Fixtures 24th March

Aston Villa v Sunderland
Aston Villa continue their fight for a place in the Champions’ League against Sunderland, who have just started winning again.
James Collins should have played for Villa anyway but an injury to central defence partner Richard Dunne makes it even more likely.

Blackburn Rovers v Birmingham City
Blackburn hope to build on their draw with Chelsea with an even better result against Birmingham City.
Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson is likely to be out for about four weeks so Jason Brown will continue to play in goal.

Manchester City v Everton
Manchester City have a bit of a defence crisis – I wonder how Craig Bellamy would do in the back line? He’s not very tall but he’s certainly tough. A win for Manchester City would put them into the Champions’ League places.
Everton however are improving and they did manage to sneak into fifth place last season. So maybe they could sneak 7th.

Portsmouth v Chelsea

Portsmouth are just waiting to be relegated while Chelsea are just waiting to get back to top form. Not that they’ll need top form to beat Portsmouth.
Rhys Taylor could return to the bench if he recovers from injury in time but the first and second-choice Chelsea goalkeepers are also close to a return.

League Two Fixtures 23rd March

Accrington Stanley v Burton Albion
Accrington have enough games in hand to have a good chance of a play-off place. Burton probably don’t but they are 19 points clear of the relegation zone.
Tony James will play in defence for Burton.

Bradford City v Notts County
Bradford have mostly been doing well since the arrival of their new manager but now they face Notts County, who are now up in 2nd place after winning games in hand.
Michael Flynn will probably play in midfield for Bradford.

Rotherham United v Macclesfield Town

Rotherham will be in 3rd if they can win this match. Macclesfield have been doing fairly well lately but this is Rotherham.
Matthew Tipton will be on the bench for Macclesfield unless something really weird happens.

League One Fixtures 23rd March

Colchester United v Brentford
Colchester have stopped being possible automatic promotion contenders and are now contenders to lose their place in the play-offs. They have played fewer games than the teams around them though and a win against the inconsistent Brentford would help them a lot.
Lee Beevers probably won’t be ready to return from a knee injury to play for Colchester and their hopes of re-signing Christian Ribeiro on loan look to be dashed as Bristol City need him to help with their injury crisis.
Lewis Price will probably be on the bench again for Brentford, even though their other loan goalkeeper has been struggling.

Southampton v Hartlepool United
Southampton probably can’t hope for more than a place in the top half of the table but even that would be great considering their points deduction. Hartlepool are just two points outside the relegation places.
Lloyd James was on the bench last week for Southampton but he continues to struggle with an ankle injury and he will probably need an operation.

Southend United v Walsall
Even a win won’t haul Southend out of the relegation zone so they really need to win this one. Walsall have struggled since their enforced winter break
Rhys Weston was back in training for Walsall yesterday and has a chance of playing. Mark Bradley will probably be on the bench.

Championship Fixtures 23rd March Part 2

Doncaster Rovers v Newcastle United
If Doncaster can complete an unlikely promotion to the Premier League, they’ll be facing better teams than Newcastle more often than not. So here is a little test for them. A test they could well pass.
Brian Stock is said to be not far off a return to Doncaster’s tea. Gareth Roberts, who has taken over the captain’s armband in Brian’s absence, will also be out if he fails a fitness test on a tight hamstring. If he can’t play, maybe John Oster will be captain?

Ipswich Town v Plymouth Argyle

Ipswich’s rise up the table shows that all those millions of draws were actually pretty useful. A number of the teams below them have won more games.
Carl Fletcher’s Plymouth probably can’t catch them but if they win and they keep winning, there are some teams who can be caught.

Middlesbrough v Preston North End
Both clubs looked like promotion contenders earlier this season but now a place in the play-offs would be a great achievement for either team.
Danny Coyne was surprisingly dropped to the bench for Boro’s draw against Reading and he could stay there but it’s fair to say the fans were far from thrilled when they found out he wasn’t playing.
Rhys Williams has returned from a one-match suspension after being sent off against Derby County but according to manager, Gordon Strachan he needs to learn to control his emotions.
Paul Parry looks definite not to play for Preston again this season.

Nottingham Forest v Crystal Palace
Nottingham Forest have struggled away of late but that’s okay because this is a home game. Crystal Palace are in the bottom three and have struggled since losing their manager to Queen’s Park Rangers.
I hope Chris Gunter will continue his ever-present status for Nottingham Forest. Rob Earnshaw should also start as he’s been scoring regularly.

Queen’s Park Rangers v Derby County

Derby are back in relegation trouble again and they face a QPR side who have improved massively under their new manager. Which isn’t like them at all.
Derby manager Nigel Clough could recall Robbie Savage, who is a great player but also a tired one.

Scunthorpe United v Peterborough United

If Peterborough have any chance of avoiding relegation, Scunthorpe are most certainly their relegation rivals.
Craig Morgan didn’t play for Peterborough at the weekend due to an ankle injury and he could miss this match as well.

Championship Fixtures 23rd March Part 1

Blackpool v Swansea City
Blackpool’s play-off challenge has fallen away somewhat whilst Swansea have slipped from 4th to 5th, despite looking pretty solid not that long ago.
Neal Eardley (hamstring) and David Vaughan (ankle) both missed Blackpool’s last match and Neal’s hamstring tear could be severe enough to keep him out for the rest of the season. David however will play if he can pass a fitness test.
Rob Edwards was dropped to the bench but as Blackpool didn’t win, maybe he’ll be recalled.
Ashley Williams, David Cotterill and Jazz Richards all have a good chance of starting for Swansea. David Cornell will be on the bench but Joe Allen probably won’t be ready to return from a knee problem, although he is back in training.

Bristol City v Barnsley
Bristol City are looking for just their second win in the last seven games, a run that leaves than just seven points from the relegation zone. Barnsley are only three points ahead of them but clearly there’s some sort of cut-off point between them as Barnsley are outsiders for the play-offs.
Bristol City defender Lewin Nyatanga has got to start really after scoring last week (last week was a draw but it was against Newcastle United so it’s practically a win) while Christian Ribeiro did well on his first league appearance for Bristol City and hopes to keep his place in the side. The 20 year old Welshman is a very exciting young player and who knows what he’d be doing if he hadn’t had all those injuries. James Wilson is back on the treatment table (if he was ever actually off it)

Premier League Fixture 23rd March

West Ham United v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Many would say the bottom three clubs have already been decided but West Ham and Wolves still have a bit of work to do in order to avoid the drop.
Danny Gabbidon (muscle strain) and Jack Collison (knee) could both return for West Ham after missing out against Arsenal.
Dave Edwards won’t play tonight as he played 90 minutes for the reserves last night but he feels he’s fully recovered and ready for the first team. Sam Vokes was also missing from the squad that faced Aston Villa and he might miss out again but Wayne Hennessey is almost certain to be on the bench.
David Jones has been offered a new contract a run of good performances for Wolves and also looks certain to start tonight.

Championship Results 21st March

Cardiff City 3-1 Watford
Cardiff ensured that they’d be in the play-off spot for a few more games at least with victory over the struggling Watford.
Darcy Blake was the only Welshman to start and did a great job in central defence following a last-minute injury. Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig were both on the bench.

Leicester City 2-2 Coventry City
Leicester were looking the only likely winners at half-time, when Andy King scored two goals in fifteen minutes but Coventry came back strongly to claim a point. The result was enough for Leicester to move above Swansea but Coventry are seven points from the play-offs.
Nicky Adams was on the bench for Leicester. Coventry’s Freddy Eastwood started off on the bench but he got a run-out on 66 minutes.

Premier League Results 21st March

Blackburn Rovers 1-1 Chelsea
Blackburn played very well and could be disappointed to have got only one point against the title-chasers.
Jason Brown stayed in goal for Blackburn in the absence of Paul Robinson and pulled off some extremely good saves from the likes of Didier Drogba. Rhys Taylor was the latest victim of Chelsea’s goalkeeper curse, with the reserve reserve keeper taking his place on the bench.

Fulham 1-2 Manchester City

Manchester City have a good chance of a Champions’ League places after beating the team who knocked Juventus out of the Europa League.
Simon Davies played the full match for Fulham but he and his team-mates seemed to have a bit of a hangover. Craig Bellamy was on great form for Manchester City, causing Fulham lots of problems and getting the assists for both goals. Craig has more assists than goals this season – but he has been spending most of his time on the left wing.

Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool

Manchester United’s title challenge continues strongly with victory over Liverpool, who really should have scored more than once.
Ryan Giggs made his first appearance for Manchester United since recovering from a broken arm, coming off the bench after 79 minutes.

League Two Results 20th March Part 2

Grimsby Town 3-2 Bournemouth
Grimsby’s win means they are now just four points adrift. The two teams looked set to share the points but a stoppage time goal for Grimsby gave them a win over promotion hopefuls Bournemouth.
Rhoys Wiggins played well in the last match of his loan spell at Bournemouth, with Joe Partington replacing a substitute after 73 minutes.

Hereford United 2-0 Bradford City
Hereford have been through a bit of a sticky patch while Bradford have been looking strong under new manager Peter Taylor, so this was a good win for Hereford.
Ryan Green played for Hereford after recovering from a knee injury. Ryan Valentine got the assist for the first goal. The two Ryans were joined in defence by Darren Jones.
Michael Flynn played the full match for Bradford.

Northampton Town 2-0 Morecambe

Northampton are now just six points from an automatic promotion place and a win in their next game could put them up to 5th. Morecambe are a solid, safe and perfectly respectable mid-table.
Peter Gilbert played the full match for Northampton. Darren Moss was on the bench for Morecambe.

League Two Results 20th March Part 1

Aldershot Town 2-0 Shrewsbury Town
A bad run for Shrewsbury has seen them drop to ninth but they are only three points off the play-offs. Aldershot have had similar problems lately but they’re now only one point behind Shrewsbury.
Will Richards was on the bench for Shrewsbury.

Burton Albion 2-2 Chesterfield
A point for Chesterfield was enough to keep them just three points from the automatic promotion places and whilst Burton continue to drop points, they’re not going down. They’re 19 points clear of the relegation zone.
Tony James played in defence for Burton and nearly scores. Robert Page was in the same position for Chesterfield. Chesterfield goalkeeper Mark Crossley was on the bench.

Cheltenham Town 1-1 Port Vale
Cheltenham will be glad they didn’t lose this one – they’re only four points ahead of Grimsby Town now. Meanwhile, Port Vale’s play-off challenge is looking shaky.
Cheltenham were missing the injured Josh Low but Gareth Owen played for Port Vale after overcoming a knee injury. Lewis Haldane and Craig Davies both came close to scoring for the away side.

Dagenham & Redbridge 3-1 Macclesfield Town
Dag & Red put themselves firmly back in the play-off picture with a win over Macclesfield, who lost for the first time since the loss of manager Keith Alexander.
Tony Roberts celebrated his new contract with Dag & Red by letting in just one goal – and winning the match. Matthew Tipton made a substitute appearance for Macclesfield but this time he couldn’t save them.

League One Results 20th March Part 2

Walsall 1-0 Colchester United
Colchester’s play-off challenge has faltered slightly, having dropped from third to sixth in the last few matches. But unlike Walsall, at least they’re still in it and they do have a game in hand over the three teams below them.
Walsall kept Mark Bradley on the bench again, while Rhys Weston is out with a calf injury. Lee Beevers still has a knee injury and couldn’t play for Colchester.

Wycombe Wanderers 2-2 Exeter City
Wycombe and Exeter shared the points as the 21st and 23rd placed teams faced off in this relegation derby.
Richard Duffy and Rob Edwards both started for Exeter, with Rob in particularly fine form, but goalkeeper Andy Marriott has so far failed to regain his first-team place after recovering from a neck injury. Stuart Fleetwood wasn’t in the squad but he got an assist and won a penalty as Exeter Reserves won 4-3 away at Swindon Reserves.

Yeovil Town 0-3 Bristol Rovers
Yeovil have been going to do well but the one thing that’s consistent about Bristol Rovers is that they’re inconsistent.
Shaun MacDonald did well for Yeovil with Arron Davies coming off the bench after 24 minutes following an injury. Yeovil now have two players called Davies and two called Williams (one of whom is the suspended Gavin Williams) so it’s very confusing.
Byron Anthony wasn’t expected to return from injury in time for this match but he played the whole thing. Ben Swallow was on the bench.

League One Results 20th March Part 1

Milton Keynes Dons 0-3 Southampton

MK Dons suffered another setback in their promotion challenge as Southampton put three past them. I still don’t think Southampton will get into the play-offs but I wouldn’t put it past them to catch MK Dons.
Jermaine Easter had a shot saved early on but once he was substituted, there wasn’t a lot he could do. Lloyd James was fit enough to be on the bench for Southampton but he’s still having problems with his ankle.

Oldham Athletic 0-2 Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton moved seven points clear of the relegation zone with this win. Oldham didn’t drop back into the bottom four but they’re only three points away.
Oldham were still without injured loanee Daniel Nardiello, while Joe Jacobson was left on the bench again. Andrew Crofts played for Brighton.

Southend United 2-2 Carlisle United
A point was enough to keep Carlisle in the top half but Southend are four points away from safety. But they did manage to hang on for 2-2 with ten men.
Jason Price again started for Carlisle but he couldn’t find the back of the net.

Stockport County 0-1 Brentford
Brentford were really in need of a win after some disappointing results left them worryingly close to the drop zone. Luckily, they were playing Stockport.
Stockport actually didn’t play that badly, especially not Owain fon Williams, who made some good saves, including one amazing one. Their manager says they have 27 points to play for. And as they’re fourteen points from safety, they could need every one of those 27 points.
Lewis Price was on the bench for Brentford.

Swindon Town 1-1 Norwich City

A win for Swindon would have put them just three points behind second-place Leeds. But they were lucky to get even a point, with the equaliser not coming until the 92nd minute. As for Norwich, probably only administration could keep them from going up.
Billy Bodin was again on the bench for Swindon.

Championship Results 20th March Part 2

Nottingham Forest 1-0 Peterborough United

Nottingham Forest won their 11th successive home game – which meant a clean sheet for Chris Gunter and another goal for Robert Earnshaw. Rob dedicated his goal to his new baby boy, Silva, who was born last Monday. Nice name. Unusual but sensible. Congratulations, Rob!
Peterborough actually played pretty well - even without Craig Morgan, who has a knee injury - and while I can’t agree with their manager that they looked the better side in the second half, an equaliser wouldn’t have been especially surprising or especially undeserved.

Queen’s Park Rangers 1-1 Swansea City
Everyone seems to think another draw for Swansea is a big disaster but I don’t think there’s any need to worry just yet. They’re eight points clear of seventh place and QPR have been in great form since Neil Warnock became their new manger.
Ashley Williams, Jazz Richards and David Cotterill all started for Swansea with David Cornell on the bench. Ashley could have got an assist but the shot was saved.

Scunthorpe United 2-1 Plymouth Argyle

A win for Scunthorpe lifts them out of the bottom three but leaves Plymouth six points adrift. They can get out of it, if they win their next game, things could look very different.
Carl Fletcher played the full match for Plymouth.

Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Derby County
The draw was enough to lift Sheffield Wednesday out of the bottom three but they remain very much ‘in it’, especially if Crystal Palace win their game in hand.
Robbie Savage was given a rest due to tiredness but he did get to come off the bench after 78 minutes.

Championship Results 20th March Part 1

Blackpool 2-2 Crystal Palace
The pub team (that’s Blackburn) were 2-0 down at the break but luckily manager Ian Holloway managed to persuade Real Madrid to play for the second half. They only got a point but it’s better than nothing.
Rob Edwards was dropped to the bench for Blackburn and with Neal Eardley and David Vaughan both out injured, there were no Welsh players on show at all.

Bristol City 2-2 Newcastle United

Bristol City must have been thrilled to be 2-0 up at the break But Newcastle had to mess that up for them by scoring two goals in the second half. But it’s still a great for Bristol City, who aren’t exactly challenging for the play-offs this year.
Bristol City’s caretaker manager Keith Millen sensibly brought Lewin Nyatanga back into the starting line-up and his decision was rewarded when Lewin scored in the 9th minute. He also gave a first ever Bristol City start to Christian Ribeiro.

Doncaster 1-1 Sheffield United
Doncaster thought they’d got another three points to take them closer to the play-offs but Sheffield United sneaked in with a last-minute equaliser, which didn’t come from Ched Evans, who is out with a shoulder injury.
Gareth Roberts and John Oster both played the full match and Brian Stock is said to be not far off.

Middlesbrough 1-1 Reading
Middlesbrough might be the team challenging for the play-offs but Reading have been on brilliant form. So it’s probably not a bad result, it’s just not very helpful for either team.
Boro’s Rhys Williams was suspended and Danny Coyne, surprisingly, was dropped to the bench. Simon Church was on the bench for Reading and there he stayed.

Premier League Results 20th March part 2

Stoke City 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham continue their challenge for the top four and winning four consecutive matches has been a big help to them in this regard. Stoke would like to get into the top half of the table but they’ll have other opportunities. Even now, they’re only two points away.
I don’t think it’s Arsenal Stoke hate. It’s just the Welsh players.
No, I don’t really believe that. But Gareth Bale was the victim of some horrible challenges. In some ways, it’s a compliment because they’ve noticed how good he is but it looked like it hurt. He wasn’t spectacularly brilliant this time, as you wouldn’t be either if someone kept trying to cut lumps of you, but he was still one of the best on the pitch.
Ryan Shawcross’ suspension came to an end but he wasn’t able to play due to a knee injury picked up in training. So Danny Collins kept his place in the starting line-up and I thought he did well. And most people agree with me. They agree about the first half anyway.

Wigan Athletic 1-0 Burnley
Wigan managed a not exactly hard-fought win when Hugo Rodallega scored in the 93rd minute. Neither side deserved to get any points from at all but in football you don’t lose points for lack of effort.
Jason Koumas wasn’t in Wigan’s squad.

Premier League Results 20th March Part 1

Arsenal v West HamUnited
Arsenal moved (briefly) to the top of the table while West Ham remain just three points from the bottom three. They’ll be very glad Burnley and Hull City both lost.
There were no Welshman anywhere in this match. For Arsenal, Aaron Ramsey has a broken leg and Sanchez Watt hasn’t been getting into the squads. For West Ham, Danny Gabbidon and Jack Collison are both injured again.

Aston Villa 2-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Villa needed an 82nd minute goal from John Carew in order to take even one point from this game. Wolves just will not lie down and get relegated.
James Collins played in defence for Villa while Wolves only had two of their Wales-eligible players in the squad.
David Jones played the full match in midfield for Wolves and it was his free kick that led to the first goal - but he was disappointed his side could only manage a draw. Wayne Hennessey was on the bench. Dave Edwards has returned to training but presumably wasn’t ready to be part of the squad while Sam Vokes was also left out.

Everton 2-0 Bolton Wanderers
Everton continue their belated quest for a place in the Europa League while Bolton, eight points clear of the drop zone, probably won’t be too worried by this result, although they won’t want it happening too often.
Sam Ricketts returned from suspension but he didn’t make an appearance until the 71st minute, when Bolton had a defender sent off. A minute later, Everton were 1-0 up. But that wasn’t Sam’s fault.

Portsmouth 3-2 Hull City
This is the cruellest result I’ve ever seen. Poor Hull. They played really well and took the lead twice through one of the players former boss Phil Brown wasn’t speaking to. But then Portsmouth, the meanies, scored two late goals in the space of two minutes.
I thought Boaz Myhill was good though. And I don’t blame him at all for time-wasting at the end, even though it got him a yellow card. I just wished he’d wasted more time really.

Sunday, 21 March 2010

Championship Fixtures 21st March

Cardiff City v Watford
Cardiff are just about hanging onto the fourth play-off place but they do have two games in hand over the teams immediately behind them. Watford just want to get as far up the table as they can.
Joe Ledley is still out with a hip injury but he could be back in another three weeks. Darcy Blake and Adam Matthews have a good chance of keeping their places in the starting line-up after some good performances. Aaron Wildig is likely to be on the bench.

Leicester City v Coventry City
A defeat for Leicester wouldn’t be a disaster in terms of their play-off chances but losing to Midlands rivals Coventry just might be.
Andy King is likely to start for Leicester but Nicky Adams has struggled to break into the team since his return from his loan to Leyton Orient. It’s not that he’s done badly, it’s just no-one’s getting injured and giving him a chance. Freddy Eastwood has a similar problem at Coventry.

Premier League Fxtures 21st March

Blackburn Rovers v Chelsea
Last week was a big one for both these teams’ Welsh goalkeepers, with Jason Brown coming off the bench to replace Paul Robinson in Blackburn’s match against Tottenham, while injuries to Chelsea’s first and second-choice goalkeepers saw Rhys Taylor take his place on the bench.
Jason will keep his place against Chelsea – facing two of the current Top Four in the space of a week would be a nightmare for any keeper but it could be worse. He could be facing Arsenal. Manager Sam Allardyce has challenged Jason to keep Paul Robinson out of the team when he returns from injury and Jason doesn’t seem averse to the idea.
Chelsea’s goalkeepers are now back in training and either or both could be in the squad to face Blackburn. So it’s back to the reserves for Rhys. For now anyway.

Fulham v Manchester City
Having dumped Juventus out of the Europa League, Fulham now take on Manchester City. It’s a bit of a come-down really.
Simon Davies has been excellent for Fulham and is likely to start. Emmanuel Adebayor is suspended, Robinho is (just about) still on loan and if Roque Santa Cruz isn’t injured now, he could be before this game comes to a close. Not great news for him but it probably won’t make much difference to Craig Bellamy, who would almost certainly have played anyway.

Manchester United v Liverpool

A point will be enough for Manchester United to return to the top of the table but three points for Liverpool won’t put them back into the top four.
Ryan Giggs returns for Manchester United after recovering from a broken arm.

Saturday, 20 March 2010

Championship Fixtures 20th March Part 2

Nottingham Forest v Peterborough United
Nottingham Forest have been struggling away since their long unbeaten run came to an end but their home form is much better. As for Peterborough’s away form, it is better than Burnley’s but that’s all you can say.
Chris Gunter will almost certainly start for Forest but Robert Earnshaw conceded a penalty last week so he could be dropped. Penalties and Robert Earnshaw don’t seem to mix at the moment although he doesn’t seem to have the same problem for Wales. The rest of the team have a penalty problem but not Rob.
Craig Morgan will be in defence for Peterborough.

Queen’s Park Rangers v Swansea City
Swansea manager Paolo Sousa was sacked by Queen’s Park Rangers last year. But he’s not exactly alone in that. And if Sousa does his job right today, new QPR manager Stephen Warnock could soon be following in his footsteps.
Ashley Williams is one of just two Swansea players to feature in Four Four Two’s Top 50 Football League Players. Robbie Savage is in it too and I bet they’re not the only Welshman. Ashley is very likely to play for Swansea with possibly one or both of David Cotterill and Jazz Richards. Joe Allen has recovered from his knee injury but he won’t even start training until Monday so he won’t be able to play.

Scunthorpe United v Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth continue their bid for survival against another struggling side.
Carl Fletcher thinks they can stay up. And if he keeps scoring last-minute winners, I think they definitely will.

Sheffield Wednesday v Derby County

Derby are starting to struggle again but not as much as Sheffield Wednesday are so they’ve got a chance. Derby are hoping their goalkeeper will return from injury but if not, there’s always Robbie Savage. Robbie is a top goalkeeper, you know. It says so in his Mirror column.

Championship Fixtures 20th March Part 1

Blackpool v Crystal Palace
Blackpool remain in touch with the play-offs. At one time, Crystal Palace were too but not anymore.
Neal Eardley won’t play for Blackpool as he has a hamstring injury and as they’ve signed someone on loan to cover for him, it doesn’t look like he’ll be back for a few weeks.
Rob Edwards and David Vaughan should be available.

Bristol City v Newcastle United
Bristol City sacked their manager this week but I’m not sure that will help them to win.
Lewin Nyatanga was on the bench for Bristol City’s last match but he could be recalled if the caretaker boss likes him enough. Christian Ribeiro was also on the bench but James Wilson is out with a knee injury.

Doncaster Rovers v Sheffield United
Doncaster continue their shock play-off bid and a Sheffield United scalp will only help.
Gareth Roberts and John Oster both scored for Doncaster last week but even if they hadn’t it would be mad to leave them out.
Brian Stock (Doncaster) and Ched Evans (Sheffield United) have both talked about a quick return from their back and shoulder injuries respectively. Neither have made it but they’re not far off.

Middlesbrough v Reading

Middlesbrough are still clinging to their promotion hopes but Reading could go ahead of them if their good form continues.
Danny Coyne will probably stay in goal for Boro but Rhys Williams is suspended after being sent off against Derby County.
Simon Church is one of quite a few strikers who could start for Reading.

Premier League Fixtures 20th March

Arsenal v West Ham United
If Arsenal win all their games, they really could win the league. Write them off only if you’re prepared to eat your words. Again. But a defeat for West Ham could put them straight back into the bottom three
I don’t really need to explain why Aaron Ramsey isn’t playing. As for West Ham, Danny Gabbidon went straight back into the starting line-up last week after recovering from a hamstring injury. But there’s a horrible rumour he’s hurt one of his muscles so he won’t be able to play.
Jack Collison was on the bench but as West Ham didn’t win or anything like that, maybe Gianfranco Zola will shuffle things so Jack can play. That’s what I’d do. (Or maybe not. I’m managing West Ham on Online Football Manager, we’re in with a chance of third but I didn’t play Jack in my last game and I won’t play him in the next one either. I’m saving him for the Cup Final against, er, Hull City.) Jack is set to have a knee operation but this won’t be until the summer. Just make sure it’s sorted out in time for Wales’ first qualifying match…

Aston Villa v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Aston Villa might only have 49 points but they also have two games in hand. So the Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City supporters will be supporting Wolves. Not that I’ve been in any bookmaker’s because I don’t gamble but if I did gamble I’d bet you that Wolves aren’t favourites to win this game. They haven’t won at Villa for three whole decades.
James Collins should keep his place in central defence for Wigan. He really should. He keeps the goals out, then goes up and scores them at the other end. Every team should have a James. And Villa actually have three.
David Jones is the Wolves player who looks most likely to start – and he thinks Wolves could get something from this match. Wayne Hennessey and Sam Vokes will be on the bench. Dave Edwards played 75 minutes for the reserves after finally recovering from his ankle injury but he might not start either.

Everton v Bolton Wanderers
Everton probably could still get into the Europa League if they play really really well and do something to make sure Aston Villa and Birmingham don’t play well (I’m sure Wolves will be happy to assist with this). Bolton are eight points clear of the drop zone and are actually looking quite safe. Everton could change all that.
Sam Ricketts is available for Bolton after being suspended last week.

Portsmouth v Hull City
Hull have a new manager and I’ve got a funny feeling he was Alan Shearer’s assistant when he got Newcastle United relegated. Good thing they’re playing Portsmouth really.
Surprisingly, Phil Brown lost his job after losing to Arsenal. Losing to Arsenal is so not a sackable offence. If it was, there wouldn’t be any managers left at the end of the 2003-04 season.
Boaz Myhill should play in goal for Hull but new managers have very strange ideas sometimes.

Stoke City v Tottenham Hotspur
The last time Tottenham went to Stoke in the League, they had two players sent off. One is their current captain (Michael Dawson) and the other is their best player (Gareth Bale). Stoke won on that occasion so they might want to use the same tactics again.
Ryan Shawcross could return to the squad after completing his three-match suspension but he has a slight ankle injury and is a doubt. If he does play, Danny Collins could go back on the bench but he’d rather stay in the starting line-up and help sneak Stoke into the top ten..
Gareth Bale will probably play at left midfield for Tottenham again. Wouldn’t it be brilliant if he got a goal this time instead of a red card?

Wigan Athletic v Burnley
Wigan won’t end up in the bottom three if they lose this but they will hold the distinction of being the first team beaten by Burnley at home. Siblings Gary Caldwell (Wigan) and Steven Caldwell (Burnley) want a goalless draw. I bet they’re the only two people in the whole stadium (except maybe for any other family members) who want one of those.
Jason Koumas probably won’t be anywhere near Wigan’s squad.

League One Fixture 19th March

Tranmere Rovers v Hartlepool United
A win for Tranmere would take them four points from the relegation zone, as well as dropping Hartlepool right in it.
Ash Taylor is almost certain to play for Tranmere – he was impressive on his return from injury at the weekend.

League One Result 17th March

Exeter City 1-0 Bristol Rovers
Exeter won for the first time since January and are now just one point from safety.
Rob Edwards returned to Exeter’s starting line-up and made a great block to prevent Bristol Rovers from scoring. Richard Duffy also played in defence and his shot on goal required a very good save. Andy Marriott remained on the bench despite having recovered from his neck injury. There was no place in the squad for loanee Stuart Fleetwood.
Byron Anthony apparently only had an outside chance of playing after suffering a suspected broken leg at the weekend but he played the full match. He nearly scored from 35 yards too. Ben Swallow was on the bench.

League Two Results 16th March

Hereford United 0-1 Morecambe
Morecambe moved to within three points of the play-offs with victory over Hereford.
Ryan Green, Ryan Valentine and Darren Jones all played the full game for Hereford and all had chances to score but you can’t blame a lack of goals on the defenders.
Darren Moss was on the bench for Morecambe.

Lincoln City 1-1 Dagenham & Redbridge
Dagenham & Redbridge took the lead in the first half, only for Lincoln to equalise in the second. Dag & Red do however remain just three points from the play-offs.
Tony Roberts played his 450th game in goal for Dagenham. He joined the in 2000, a year after he retired. And I don’t think he’ll be retiring again any time in the immediate future.

League One Results 16th March

Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 Brentford
Two stoppage-time goals gave Brighton a more emphatic victory over Brentford than was likely expected. Brighton are now a point ahead of Brentford and nine points from the relegation zone.
Andrew Crofts seemed to be everywhere playing for Brighton. Lewis Price was on the bench for Brentford.

Carlisle United 1-0 Yeovil Town

Carlisle narrowly beat Yeovil and moved three points ahead of them.
Jason Price played the full game for Carlisle and was again very impressive. Shaun MacDonald was the only Welshman to start for Yeovil and was praised by his manager for another great performance. Arron Davies came off the bench after 68 minutes while Gavin Williams served the first match of his three-match suspension.

Southampton 0-1 Swindon Town
Swindon moved up to 4th place after inflicting on Southampton their third defeat in as many matches. Lloyd James made his return from an ankle injury, coming off the bench on 71 minutes. And Billy Bodin made a surprise (to me) appearance on the bench for Swindon. It was the first time he’d been in the senior squad.

Stockport County 0-1 Oldham Athletic

Stockport lost again as Oldham managed to put five points between themselves and the drop zone.
Owain fon Williams played in goal for Oldham’s Joe Jacobson was dropped to the bench and Daniel Nardiello missed out with a hamstring injury.
