Transfer Deadline Day August 2010 - Welsh Players

I was very intrigued to hear that ‘Christian Bale’ was moving to Birmingham. I assumed they meant Gareth which sounded a bit unlikely (although any move that weakens Tottenham Hotspur can only be a good thing) but it turned out they meant former Arsenal man Alexander Hleb. They managed to get him too, despite interest from Liverpool, Tottenham and Benfica.

Mark Hughes
was named as a contender to become manager of Aston Villa despite only arriving at Fulham five minutes ago (okay that might be a slight exaggeration). This one didn't happen... although the last time I checked, manager don't have to stick to transfer deadlines.

Swansea City received a bid from Leicester City for Ashley Williams but they told Leicester where to go. Former Swansea manager Paolo Sousa is now at Leicester so it was probably his idea.

Reading striker Gylfi Sigurdsson has made a shock move to the Bundesliga. No he’s not Welsh but striker team-mates Simon Church, Hal Robson-Kanu and Jake Taylor are and Sigurdsson was keeping them out of the team.

Danny Gabbidon
was very excited to hear Ryan Babel might be joining him at West Ham. West Ham fans were probably equally excited to hear that Danny is on Twitter and is therefore unlikely to be heading anywhere in the next few hours. Always a worry on transfer deadline day.

Tony Pulis had a go at signing Jermaine Pennant (formerly of Arsenal, Liverpool and Birmingham and I think also Portsmouth) and his Welsh charm worked. Pennant is now an on-loan Stoke City player. For Tony's sake, let’s hope he’s grown up since his Arsenal days.

Welsh Player News 31st August (Championship)

Gavin Williams is one of several players who could be leaving Bristol City after being left out of the squad to face Ipswich Town at the weekend. Yahoo Eurosport thinks the players will be sent out on loan. Gavin is one of several Welshman to have a loan spell at Yeovil Town last season. Two of them have already returned on loan…

Darcy Blake and Adam Matthews, who are out of contract next summer, are said to be close to signing new contracts with Cardiff City.

Craig Bellamy could become Cardiff City’s Roy of the Rovers. I think he’d be a great comic book hero. But Craig says he’s not going to let himself get carried away.

Former Cardiff City captain Mark Hudson says he was happy to give Craig his captain’s armband. That’s good to hear but seriously, what else is he going to say? I hope he really is okay with it.

John Oster has been named in the Sky Sports Championship Team of the Week. John made his first appearance for Doncaster Rovers since a knee operation. Norwich City’s Andrew Crofts was in the Football League Championship Team of the Week.

Andy King vows to show Leicester City what they’re missing by leaving him on the bench (although if they haven’t worked it out by now, maybe they never will).

Danny Coyne was impressed with good friend and fellow goalkeeper Steve Croudson when he made his comeback at Grimsby Town. Steve was forced to retire six years ago after suffering an injury but the goalkeeping coach re-registered as a player yesterday – although his injury will prevent him from playing regularly.

Nottingham Forest striker Robert Earnshaw believes his former club Norwich City could become a top six side.

Gary Speed was thrilled to get his first win as a manager when Sheffield United beat Preston North End 1-0. has been overwhelmed by the support he has received from Sheffield United fans since becoming manager of the club. He hopes to reward them by taking the Blades into the play-offs.

Neil Taylor is confident he can make the step up from being a being Blue Square Premier footballer to a Championship footballer who might challenge for the promotion to the Premier League. Neil moved from Wrexham to Swansea City in the summer.

Montenegro v Wales News 1st August 2010

Andrew Crofts withdrew from the Wales match due to a groin problem.

James Collins believes Danny Gabbidon will bounce back from the disappointment of not being able to play for Wales on Sunday. What he mustn't do is retire from Wales. Just because everyone’s doing it, it doesn’t make it right!

Ashley Williams said Wales underestimated Montenegro the last time they played them but they won’t make that mistake again.

Steve Morison, newly nicknamed Taffy by his Millwall team-mates, hopes to help his new country to a win in their first Eiuro 2012 qualifier. Just over a year ago, he was wondering if he’d ever play League football again. Now one of the top scorers in the Championship and he’s a Welsh international.

Championship Results 28th August 2010 Part 3

Sheffield United 1-0 Preston North End
Gary Speed helped Sheffield United to climb the table a little away with his first win as a manager. Preston are out of the bottom three but only just.
Gary picked fellow Welshman Ched Evans to start but the goal wasn’t his although he did come very close.
Craig Morgan played the full match for Preston but Paul Parry wasn’t in the squad.

Swansea City 1-0 Burnley
Both sides were reduced to ten men as Swansea ended Burnley’s unbeaten run and haul themselves into the top half.
Neil Taylor made his first league start for Swansea with Ashley Williams and David Cotterill, who had a particularly good game, also in the starting line-up. Joe Allen replaced David when he was substitured. David Cornell and Jazz Richards were both unusued substitutes.

Watford 0-1 Leeds United
Another win for Leeds puts them into the top six while Watford, who won their opening two games but haven’t won since.
Jonathan Bond wasn’t on the bench for Watford so presumably the second-choice keeper is now fit.
Sanchez Watt started for Leeds and probably should have scored.

Championship Results 28th August 2010 Part 2

Millwall 3-1 Coventry City
Millwall bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to Leeds United with victory over Coventry, who have also had a great start to the season.
Millwall’s opening goal came from a Coventry player but it was Steve Morison who provided the cross. Steve got on the scoresheet himself when he was fouled in the penalty area and tucked away the resulting spot kick.
Freddy Eastwood came off Coventry’s bench three minutes after what was Coventry’s hour-mark equaliser but he was unable to add to it.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Norwich City
Nottingham Forest do now have three points but rather than coming from what would have been a very welcome win, they all came from draws. Norwich are only out of the play-offs on goal difference.
Andrew Crofts scored his second goal for Norwich when he got the equaliser. Robert Earnshaw came close to winning the match for Forest but he hit a post. Chris Gunter missed out due to suspension.

Portsmouth 0-2 Cardiff City
Cardiff and Portsmouth continue to head for opposite ends of the table with Cardiff joint-top and Portsmouth rock bottom. It was their first meeting since the 2008 FA Cup final.
Darcy Blake was back in the starting line-up after apparently recovering from an ankle injury but he only lasted 28 minutes before injuring the other ankle. Adam Matthews again replaced him. Craig Bellamy started the match but was unable to find the back of the net. Jason Koumas made another late substitute appearance as he tries to build up match fitness. Aaron Wildig wasn’t in the squad, perhaps because of the Premier League players’ influx.

Scunthorpe United 3-0 Crystal Palace

I don’t know what Scunthorpe are even doing in the Championship but they looked the part on Saturday as they swept Crystal Palace aside. Palace are at the wrong end of the table again and this time they can’t blame it on a points deduction.
Andy Dorman was rested which could have been part of the problem for Palace but he came off the bench after 72 minutes. Lewis Price stayed on the bench.

Championship Results 28th August 2010 Part 1

Barnsley 2-0 Middlesbrough
The Championship title-favourites lost at Barnsley… although if they carry on like this, I won’t be able to call them the title favourites anymore. It’s early days though and the team can afford to take a bit more time to gel.
Danny Coyne was on the bench for Boro.

Derby County 2-2 Queen’s Park Rangers
Derby brought QPR’s 100% record to an end although they do remain unbeaten. Derby were actually very unlucky not to lose and were 2-0 up at the end of normal time.
Robbie Savage managed to get Adel Taarabt back into his pocket but maybe he should have put Jamie Mackie in his other pocket. Gareth Roberts played in defence for Derby.

Doncaster Rovers 3-1 Hull City
Doncaster move level on points with 5th-placed Burnley while Hull, whose manager missed the match due to being in hospital, are two points outside the relegation zone. Hull now haven’t won away for nearly eighteen months.
John Oster made his first appearance for Doncaster since knee surgery in the summer. He and Brian Stock both started but were substituted late on. Brian has since withdrawn from the Wales squad.

Ipswich Town 2-0 Bristol City
Ipswich continue their unbeaten run while Bristol City are having a run like Ipswich did last year – they have just two points from their four games so far. Ipswich will remind them this isn’t necessarily a complete disaster.
Troy Brown was on the bench for Ipswich.
Most of Bristol City’s Welsh players are either injured or coming back from injury. But there was no place in the squad for Gavin Williams either which meant the only Welshman on show was new signing Brett Pitman, who isn’t really Welsh yet anyway.

Leicester City 1-2 Reading
Both these teams were without a league win before kick-off and it did look as though this run might continue for both teams. But Reading grabbed an 86th minute goal and took the three points.
Leicester left Andy King on the bench but he came on after 63 minutes. Unfortunately his goal was disallowed.
Simon Church was a doubt for this match due to a neck injury but he came off the bench for Reading a minute earlier but there was no substitute appearance for Hal Robson-Kanu or Jake Taylor.

Montenegro v Wales News 28th August 2010

John Toshack won’t be calling Ryan Giggs up to play for Wales again. But anyone thinking of retiring from international football should follow Ryan’s example. Or ideally not do it at all.

John Toshack will sit down and wait to see who will drop out of the Wales squad this time. Craig Bellamy and Darcy Blake are doubts. Tosh has warned Premier League centre backs James Collins and Danny Gabbidon that they are not automatic first-choices – Ashley Williams and Craig Morgan have both done very well for Wales lately – never mind that Craig’s Preston North End are near the bottom of the Championship.

Update (not good)
Danny Gabbidon definitely won’t be playing for Wales as he has withdrawn, along with Darcy Blake, Brian Stock and Andrew Crofts.
Danny has a hamstring niggle. It doesn’t sound serious and maybe he should go to Wales to offer his support but after a succession of injury problems over the last three years, it’s understandable that he doesn’t want to take any risks.
Darcy suffered a foot injury last week and was a late withdrawal from Cardiff City’s squad to face Doncaster Rovers. He attempted a comeback this weekend when Cardiff played Portsmouth but lasted just 28 minutes,
Brian has a back injury and will be hoping it’s not as serious as the back injury that ruled him out for much of last season.
I don’t know what’s up with Andrew.

Premier League Results 28th August 2010 Part 2

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Wigan Athletic
Tottenham are in the Champions’ League. Wigan will probably be in a competition next year that begins with the letters ‘Champions’ but it won’t be the one Tottenham are in now. It wasn’t a great game for Wigan as they really should have scored a more goals but they got the three points and that’s the important thing.
Gareth Bale started off at left midfield, then he was moved to left back after some disastrous defending from Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1 Newcastle United

The general feeling is that if you’re a team beginning with W or a team who’s just come up for the Championship, you’re going to have problems this season. But I think these two will be all right. Yet Wolves are in the top two and Newcastle only a place behind. There’s a long way to go but there have been good signs from both teams this season.
David Jones played 72 minutes for Wolves and nearly scored again but Wayne Hennessey and Dave Edwards were both on the bench.

Premier League Results 28th August 2010 Part 1

Blackburn Rovers 1-2 Arsenal
Blackburn away sounded like a tough proposition for a bunch of weaklings like Arsenal but luckily, the bunch of weaklings (with the exception of Robin van Persie, who was worryingly, if not unsurprisingly, forced to leave the pitch due to injury) came through pretty much unscathed and th fluid passing over the less graceful approach.
Aaron Ramsey missed this match due to injury and Blackburn goalkeeper Jason Brown probably missed it due to being fourth choice.

Blackpool 2-2 Fulham
Blackpool will be disappointed by the late equaliser that denied them a second league win but at least they can console themselves with the knowledge that they did just as well against Fulham as Manchester United did last week. Blackpool played very well and deserved one point at the very least and got the ball in the net four times in total. One was offside and one was ruled out for a foul but the other two were fine.
David Vaughan played the full match for Blackpool and Neal Eardley made an appearance from the bench. There was no place in the squad for Rob Edwards.
Simon Davies was back in Fulham’s starting line-up and was quite unlucky not to win it for Fulham at the end.

Chelsea 2-0 Stoke City
Chelsea are at the top of the table with a 100% record but they have arguably had a very easy run-in. Stoke are the best side they’ve faced so far – and the only side to prevent them from scoring six goals. Stoke shouldn’t worry just yet.
Ryan Shawcross and Danny Collins played in defence for Stoke. Ryan conceded a penalty. I do like a bit of whole-heartedness in a man but maybe he needs to tone it down just a little bit.

Manchester United 3-0 West Ham United

This defeat left West Ham at the foot of the table but it wasn’t quite big enough for Manchester United to move ahead of Arsenal in the table. So I’m happy.
Ryan Giggs started for Man Utd and won the penalty that led to his side’s opening goal. Michael Owen came off the bench after 74 minutes.
Danny Gabbidon was in the starting line-up for West Ham and he stopped Wayne Rooney from scoring. Let’s hope he can do that again in the qualifiers. Several times.

League One Fixtures 28th August 2010 Part 1

Bournemouth v Notts County
The top two promoted teams go head to head. Bournemouth have made a good start and are currently in the play-off positions whereas Notts County collected their first win only last week.
Bournemouth are obviously without Brett Pitman, who has joined Bristol City but they still have Rhoys Wiggins (who should start) and Joe Partington (who will be on the bench).
Ben Davies has attracted a lot of attention since getting his first assist in League One but he’s still a County player for now.

Brentford v Rochdale
Brentford and Rochdale aren’t two of the best League One sides at the moment but Hull City and Barnsley probably think they’re quite good. Brentford’s match is the more recent so perhaps it will give them a bit of extra confidence for this match.
Nicky Adams was rested against Hull in the Carling Cup and it’s fair to say they didn’t miss him too much but he’ll return to the squad against Rochdale.
Matt Done will probably be on the bench for Rochdale.

Brighton & Hove Albion v Walsall
Brighton haven’t won since the first day of the season but Walsall have won their last two matches in all competitions.
Sean Geddes will be on the bench for Walsall.

Bristol Rovers v Southampton
Bristol Rovers haven’t lost since that embarrassing Oxford United Carling Cup match. Now they take on title favourites Southampton… who are still looking for their first win.
Byron Anthony picked up a back injury last weekend but should be able to play for Bristol Rovers. Ben Swallow and Eliot Richards will be on the bench.

Wales v England News

The Wales v England match could take place at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Welsh Player News 27th August 2010 (Championship)

Craig Bellamy is now a fashion icon. Cardiff kids not only want his shirt, they want his haircut too.

Craig would like to spend the rest of his career at Cardiff.

13 year old Mitchell Palmer could be the future of Welsh football.

Robbie Savage has no idea why possible future Welsh international Brett Pitman has turned down Premier League Blackpool in favour of Championship Bristol City.

Robbie thinks England will be in trouble when they face Gareth Bale in the Euqo 2012 qualifiers.

Robbie goes to Wrexham and meets a nurse who wants to marry him and a man who once complained about Robbie kicking footballs into his garden.

Norwich City’s Owain Tudur Jones and Swansea City's Shaun MacDonald have gone back to Yeovil Town on loan, after successful loan spells last season. Owain’s new loan spell is for one month while Shaun will stay until January.

Ashley Williams would like Ryan Giggs to come out of international retirement.

David Cotterill is happy to take more penalties for Swansea City but he can’t bear to watch the one he missed against Norwich City.

Championship Fixtures 28th August 2010 Part 3

Swansea City v Burnley
Swansea have only won once this season and that was against Preston North End, who were bottom at the time. But since then they have lost to Norwich City and only knocked Tranmere Rovers out of the Carling Cup after a late fightback. Burnley are looking like contenders for promotion though it’s still very early days.
Ashley Williams should start in defence for Swansea. Neil Taylor, David Cotterill and Joe Allen could also start with David Cornell on the bench.

Watford v Leeds United
Watford have started well and they now face Leeds United, who started badly but did manage to beat the previously unbeaten Millwall last weekend.
Jonathan Bond wasn’t on Watford’s bench for the midweek Carling Cup defeat to Notts County and might not be seen again this season unless there’s another goalkeeper injury.
Sanchez Watt should be back in Leeds’ starting line-up after being rested for the midweek Carling Cup defeat to Leicester City. Can you see a pattern emerging?

Championship Fixtures 28th August 2010 Part 3

Portsmouth v Cardiff City
Cardiff hope to build on last weekend’s comprehensive victory over Doncaster Rovers when they take on Portsmouth. Cardiff are currently in second place while Portsmouth sit in the bottom three.
Craig Bellamy was rested for Cardiff’s midweek Carling Cup defeat but he should return for this match. Darcy Blake is likely to miss out again with an ankle injury which increases the likelihood of Adam Matthews keeping his place in the starting line-up. Jason Koumas also started midweek and could do again although he found the 90 minutes tough after so long without a game. Aaron Wildig made an unexpected return from injury midweek and is likely to be in the squad again.

Scunthorpe United v Crystal Palace
Both teams survived relegation last season but it came far too close to comfort. Scunthorpe were only safe for the last game of the season because Palace and Sheffield Wednesday were playing each other. Palace saved themselves by winning that match.
Andy Dorman should keep his place in Palace’s midfield. Lewis Price will probably be on the bench.

Sheffield United v Preston North End
Both teams have spent a lot of time in the play-offs recently but both started poorly. Sheffield United are bottom with one point. Preston held this position last weekend until a very welcome win over Portsmouth.
Ched Evans will probably play up front for Sheffield Utd. Preston defender Craig Morgan will be trying to stop him from scoring. Paul Parry might or might not be in Preston’s squad.

Championship Fixtures 28th August 2010 Part 2

Leicester City v Reading
Leicester are still searching for their first win of the season but they did manage to knock Leeds United out of the Carling Cup so things can’t be too hopeless. Reading have twice as many points as Leicester – two.
Andy King helped inspire Leicester’s fightback against Leeds so he should be back in the starting line-up.
Simon Church won’t play for Reading after picking up a neck injury. Hal Robson-Kanu, who scored not only a shoot-out penalty but also his first goal for Reading, could be in contention. Jake Taylor is another option.

Millwall v Coventry City
Millwall aim to get back to winning ways after old rivals Leeds United took all three points last weekend. Coventry haven’t beaten Millwall at home since 1955.
Steve Morison should keep his place in Millwall’s team. Fellow striker Freddy Eastwood scored two for Coventry on the first day of the season but none since then.

Nottingham Forest v Norwich City
Nottingham Forest, who finished third last season, are still looking for their first win of the new season. If they lose this match, they’ll have equalled last season’s poor start. But maybe they can also equal last season’s third-placed finish.
Chris Gunter serves the second match of his three-match suspension. Rob Earnshaw could be in Forest’s starting line-up to face his former club.
Andrew Crofts should be in Norwich’s starting line-up after recovering from a an ankle problem but Owain Tudur Jones won’t play as he has gone back to Yeovil Town on loan.

Championship Fixtures 28th August 2010 Part 1

Barnsley v Middlesbrough
Title favourites (if they still are) Middlesbrough will be hoping to add to their only league win when they travel to Barnsley.
Danny Coyne will probably be on the bench for Middlesbrough. Rhys Williams is still out with a pelvic injury.

Derby County v Queen’s Park Rangers

Derby have just three points from three games and now they host the only team in the Championship with a 100% record – and the only team who haven’t conceded a goal.
Gareth Roberts and Robbie Savage should both be in Derby’s starting line-up. Let’s hope Robbie can get Adel Taarabt in his pocket again.

Doncaster Rovers v Hull City
I thought both these teams could struggle – and the season is a long way from over yet – but both are in mid-table. However neither team has won in the league since the opening day of the season.
John Oster could return from a knee injury and could be on the bench, if he’s not quite ready to join Brian Stock in midfield.

Ipswich Town v Bristol City
Ipswich aim to continue their good start to the season but Bristol City will be desperate to improve on the two points they have so far. Signing Premier League players might be working for Cardiff City but it’s not been so good for the team on the other side of the Severn.
Troy Brown could start again for Ispwich after being part of the team that – eventually – beat Crewe Alexandra in the Carling Cup.
Former Ipswich player Gavin Williams is the only Welshman who will definitely be in the squad but new signing Brett Pitman could also be eligible for Wales. Christian Ribeiro could return from a back injury after playing 90 minutes a reserve match but Lewin Nyatanga and James Wilson (both knee) and Sam Vokes (hamstring) are still out.

Welsh Player News 28th August 2010 (Premier League)

Givemefootball think Ryan Giggs could still do a job for Wales. No arguments from me.

Michael Owen will be playing for Liverpool this season. But only once and only for Jamie Carragher’s testimonial.

Arsene Wenger has been criticising Ryan Shawcross again but this time he’s been complaining about his treatment of a Tottenham Hotspur player.

Harry Redknapp believes Gareth Bale could get into any team in the world. Except, of course, teams like England. Some disillusioned fans have even suggested he’s too good for England and should stay with Wales. I agree!

Danny Gabbidon is looking forward to taking on Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov and believes West Ham won’t necessarily lose.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have their own barber. David Jones is a regular. I wonder if Wales would be interested in having their own hairdresser, I certainly wouldn’t object to being paid to run my fingers through Aaron Ramsey’s hair.

Premier League Fixtures 28th August 2010 Part 2

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Newcastle United
Newcastle haven’t lost at home for ages but away is a different matter. Wolves are likely to give Newcastle less trouble than Manchester United did on the opening day of the season.
Dave Edwards will be making his 150th league start if he plays today but apparently he will have another fitness test, despite – or maybe because of – his 90-minute involvement in the Carling Cup midweek.
David Jones will almost certainly be recalled. Wayne Hennessey would probably absolutely love a start after his performance in the Carling Cup but somehow I don’t think he’ll get one.

Manchester United v West Ham United
Manchester United are desperate to win back the league title and they’ll be doubly so after last week’s disappointment against Fulham. And the way West Ham have been playing – they are pointless - it’s difficult to imagine Manchester Unied getting fewer than three points.
Ryan Giggs could play in central midfield if Paul Scholes is rested. Michael Owen should also be in the squad but Owen Hargreaves is out with his knee injury again.
Danny Gabbidon could start for West Ham again but Jack Collison is out with a knee injury.

Premier League Fixtures 28th August 2010 Part 1

Blackburn Rovers v Arsenal
Arsenal haven’t won away since March. That might not seem to bad if it was April but it’s August. I hope they don’t end up like Gillingham.
Jason Brown doesn’t seem to be Blackburn’s second-choice keeper anymore. More like fourth choice.
Aaron Ramsey could be back playing for Arsenal in just over two months.

Blackpool v Fulham
Blackpool play their first home game of the season. Their opening game was meant to be at home but the stadium wasn’t ready.
Blackpool rested ten players for the Carling Cup defeat to Milton Keynes Dons and losing 6-0 to Arsenal doesn’t mean you’re the worst team in the Premier League. So let’s see how they do against Fulham – a team not renowned for their away form.
David Vaughan should be back in Blackpool’s starting line-up. Neal Eardley and Rob Edwards are likely to be back on the bench.
Simon Davies could be recalled to Fulham’s squad after being rested midweek.

Chelsea v Stoke City
Chelsea aim to continue their 100% start to the season against a team who gave Tottenham Hotspur some problems but are still without a point. Chelsea are averaging six goals a game. The last player to score against them was Welshman Gareth Bale.
Ryan Shawcross should be in central defence for Stoke, perhaps alongside Danny Collins.

Tottenham Hotspur v Wigan Athletic
Wigan have conceded 10 goals so far this season. So the last team they want to face is the team who beat them 9-1 in this fixture last season.
Gareth Bale will probably play at left midfield again. This is also bad news for Wigan. Tottenham have scored nine league goals this season. Eight of them were scored or created by Gareth. I’m happy Gareth is Welsh but I wish he played for Arsenal or Cardiff.

Thursday, 26 August 2010

League Two Fixture 27th August 2010

Bradford City v Southend United
Bradford’s and Southend’s Carling Cup dreams came to an end midweek after taking their Championship and Premier League opponents to extra time before both losing by a very respectable two goals to one.
Michael Flynn had a groin operation this week and won’t play for Bradford for about a month.
Southend’s Peter Gilbert should keep his place in the starting line-up.

League One Fixture 27th August 2010

Colchester v Carlisle United
This time last season, Colchester were a surprise top side. Now this role is filled by Carlisle.
Lloyd James made his first start in Colchester’s Carling Cup match against Sunderland – let’s see if he did enough to keep his place. If not, he’ll be on the bench. Lee Beevers is probably also more likely to be a substitute
Jason Price is back in training and might be ready for this game.

Carling Cup Result 25th August 2010

Fulham 6-0 Port Vale
This 6-0 thing seems to be catching. Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United were all at it at the weekend. Fulham were playing Manchester United so it would have been a bit difficult for them to join in then but a Carling Cup clash against Port Vale offered the perfect opportunity.
Fulham’s team was close to full strength but Simon Davies was one of those rested.
Gareth Owen played in defence for Port Vale.

Welsh Player News (and rumours) 26th August 2010 (Football League)

Possible future Wales international Brett Pitman, now a Bristol City player, praised his former manager at Bournemouth.

Big bad horrible Craig Bellamy has visited children in Cardiff Hospital.

Jason Koumas believes Cardiff have a very good chance of getting promoted.

Derby County are interested in signing midfielder Ben Davies from Notts County.

John Oster could be ready to play for Doncaster Rovers this weekend. The midfielder had a knee operation during the close season.

Andrew Crofts doesn’t seen to think his manager at Norwich City, Paul Lambert, will be hanging around for long.

Is anything more humiliating for a Nottingham Forest fan than dressing up as Robbie Savage? Apart from their recent results.

Hal Robson-Kanu says it was good to score his first goal for Reading but the defeat to Northampton Town kind of spoiled it a bit.

Exeter City’s John O’Flynn is hoping a good striking partnership will develop for him and Daniel Nardiello.

Southend United defender Peter Gilbert was disappointed to see his team knocked out of the Carling Cup but delighted to return from an ankle injury and make his debut for Southend

Welsh Player News 26th August 2010 (Wales, Premier League)

Wales Online previews Wales’ upcoming qualifier against Montenegro and suggests John Toshack will have a big decision to make on who will play in central defence with James CollinsDanny Gabbidon or Craig Morgan. Danny is more skilled and he and James have played together a lot, as well as being good friends. But he is understandably rusty and off-form after three years of injury problems. Craig played well for Wales against Luzembourg and did well. Or Wales could just play Ashley Williams – he can do a job in defensive midfield but as the article says, he’s a centre back.

Danny Gabbidon says there’s no reason for West Ham United to panic, they’re just fine.

Carling Cup Results 24th August 2010 Part 6

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Southend United (after extra time)
Southend might not be having the best time of it in League Two but they have certainly made their mark in the Carling Cup. They’ve only managed a point in the league but they shocked Bristol City of the Championship in the previous round before giving Premier League Wolves a nasty scare too.
Wolves had the ball in the net four times but two of their efforts were disallowed. Wolves took the lead through a first-half penalty and Southend came close to an equaliser pretty much straight away although it was not until the 80th minute that the scores were levelled. Southend forced extra time and were on the brink of penalties but a winner in the third minute of extra stoppage time put Wolves – perhaps undeservedly – into the next round.
Wayne Hennessey got his first start of the season for Wolves and his No. 13 shirt quite possibly was a bit unlucky. Why goalkeepers have to wear that number I really don’t know. Numerically the natural number is 13 and second-choice goalkeepers often have such a horrible time anyway. They don’t play for months then suddenly there’s a big emergency and on they come, their first act of the game very often picking an opposition penalty out of the back of the net. But that didn’t happen with Wayne, he got a start and he didn’t play badly.
Dave Edwards returned from a groin injury and went straight into Wolves’ starting line-up, lasting to the first minute of stoppage time. David Jones was rested from the squad.
Southend defender Peter Gilbert was another to return from injury only in his case, this was his first competitive start for the club. It was his free kick that so nearly gave Southend an earlier equaliser

Carling Cup Results 24th August 2010 Part 5

Tranmere Rovers 1-3 Swansea City
Tranmere made a great start to the match, going 1-0 up after 22 minutes and hanging on well into the second half. It looked like the League One side might actually do it. But the equaliser finally arrived and Swansea took the lead in the very next minute. Then, just to make the score look more respectable, Swansea got a third.
Kayleden Brown wasn’t in the squad for this match. Maybe West Brom don’t want him cup-tied.
Joe Allen (who nearly marked his first start of the season with a goal) and joined Ashley Williams in the starting line-up for this match. There was also first Swansea starts for Casey Thomas and new signing Neil Taylor. David Cornell, Jazz Richards and Joe Walsh were among the unused substitutes.

Watford 1-2 Notts County
Notts County have been famous for their giant-killings recently. Wigan Athletic were their victims last year, this time another w-team, Watford, followed. Admittedly Wigan was funnier given they are in the Premier League and County were then in League Two but it stopped being so funny after Wigan beat Arsenal. Funny that.) Watford have made a good start in the Championship this season and dominated this match but Notts County were the team able to take their chances.
Ben Davies got his first Notts County goal of the season from a free kick just after half-time and they hung on for another twenty-one minutes before doubling their lead. Watford got a goal back not long after that but they were unable to add to their tally and League One Notts County advance to the next round.
Watford played a substitute goalkeeper in this match but it wasn’t Jonathan Bond. Not unless he’s changed his name by deed poll. And his squad number.

Carling Cup Results 24th August 2010 Part 4

Southampton 0-1 Bolton Wanderers
For the first time this season, Sam Ricketts played for Bolton. And for the first time, they won and kept a clean sheet. Coincidence? Probably. It’s only Bolton’s third match, it’s far too early to be making connections like that. But it probably wasn’t easy for the defenders, making sure Bolton hung onto their 1-0 lead and Sam had a key role to play in the goal.
I thought Southampton might give Ryan Doble a place in the squad but he wasn’t there.

Stoke City 2-1 Shrewsbury Town
Stoke went 2-0 up early on but Shrewsbury kept going and got a goal back in the 79th minute. There was no big shock but it’s still a great result for League Two Shrewsbury. It’s not so good for Stoke, who really look like they might be in trouble this season.
Stoke’s Danny Collins was rested but Ryan Shawcross kept his place in the weakened squad.
Tom Bradshaw made a 59th minute substitute appearance.

Sunderland 2-0 Colchester United
Two early Sunderland goals were enough to see off Colchester. It seems cruel to say it was a routine win for Sunderland but it kind of pretty much was.
Lloyd James was given his first start in a Colchester shirt while Lee Beevers made his second substitute appearance in four days.

Carling Cup Results 24th August 2010 Part 3

Peterborough United 2-1 Cardiff City
This was one giant-killing I didn’t want to see. True, Cardiff left out Craig Bellamy, without whom they are admittedly considerably weaker, but it still wasn’t nice to see. And manager Dave Jones said the result wouldn’t have been different f Craig had played. Cardiff took the lead just after the half-hour mark but Peterborough scored a couple of really good goals to go through to the next round.
Arron Davies came close to scoring two goals for Peterborough. He played ninety minutes but he didn’t play the full match. Work that one out.
Craig was probably just rested but Jason Koumas made his first start for Cardiff, or rather his first start in this loan spell. He had a great first half and he got the assist for the first goal. He was understandably quieter in the second half but he completed his first ninety minutes for ages and ages.
Darcy Blake was still out with an ankle problem but Adam Matthews kept his place in the starting line-up and did well in the first half especially. Aaron Wildig wasn’t expected to be fit enough to return to the squad but he was an 84th minute substitute. Nathaniel Jarvis was on the bench.

Portsmouth 1-1 Crystal Palace (Portsmouth win 4-3 on penalties)
Portsmouth looked set to win this in ninety minutes but they messed it up for themselves when they accidentally put the ball in the wrong net. Their problems with putting the ball in the net continued. Portsmouth were unable to find a winner in extra time and they were just lucky Palace couldn’t find one either. Then came the shoot-out. Portsmouth won 4-3 but Palace (I think¬) won 4-3 on misses.
Andy Dorman started for Crystal Palace but he was substituted and therefore missed the penalty drama. Lewis Price was on the bench.

Reading 3-3 Northampton Town, Northampton win 4-2 on penalties

Welsh players don’t have the best reputation when it comes to penalties. And England think they’ve got it bad. Reading were the team to open the scoring but the League Two side got an equaliser just two minutes later. When Welshman Hal Robson-Kanu put Reading back into the lead in the 62nd minutes - his first for the club - the same thing happened, only quicker. Two minutes later, Northampton had levelled the score. This took the match into extra time and Reading really thought they’d done it. They scored and in the 4th minute of stoppage time, there had been no reply from Northampton. The reply came a minute later. Except it wasn’t so much a reply as an own goal.
And so to the penalties. By this stage, Reading had all three of their Welsh strikers on the field. Hal and Simon Church had played the full match whilst Jake Taylor came on in the 50th minute. Having already scored one goal that night, Hal was perhaps a little more confident than the other two. At any rate, of the three of them, this was the only goal that went in. Simon went for power rather than placement in the first penalty and it backfired. Probably not literally though. Jake’s penalty went wide. But I still love them and I’m sure they’ll get a lot of sympathy from their Welsh team-mates.
Paul Walker was on the bench for Northampton.

Carling Cup Results 24th August 2010 Part 2

Leyton Orient 0-2 West Bromwich Albion
Leyton Orient were unlucky not to take the lead in the 8th minute but Boaz Myhill was having one of his good days and better teams than Orient have struggled to get past him. It’s fair to say Bo’s West Brom debut went well although the dominance of West Brom meant that he didn’t have a lot to do.

Millwall 2-1 Middlesbrough
The favourites to go down took the lead after 29 minutes when the favourites to win the league conceded a penalty. This was despatched by Steve Morison - as always I am very grateful for any Welshman who can score penalties. Millwall made it two ten minutes later. Middlesbrough did get one back in the 89th minute but it was a bit late by then. Millwall manager Kenny Jackett was delighted with his team’s performance.
Danny Coyne was on the bench for Middlesbrough.

Milton Keynes Dons 4-3 Blackpool (after extra time)
MK Dons took the lead as early as the first minute and I was really disappointed. I wanted to see giant-killings. I wanted Blackpool to win. Then it got to half-time and I suddenly remembered Blackpool are in the Premier League now and MK Dons are nowhere near as good as Wimbledon.
Things got exciting in the 52nd minute when both sides scored twice to make the score 3-3. Then Blackpool got a penalty, which they scored. I started to celebrate, then I remembered again. Wrong minnows.
The match went into extra time and MK Dons got a late winner. I started to groan then remembered I should be cheering. Well done to MK Dons but to be fair to Blackpool, Ian Holloway had picked a second-string side before pissing off to watch some transfer target.
Jermaine Easter ended his goal drought for MK Dons when he scored their second goal of the night. He must have liked the feeling a lot because he did it again two minutes later. The hat-trick wouldn’t quite come but he did get the assist for the fourth goal.
Neal Eardley and Rob Edwards were in the starting line-up for the first time since Blackpool became a Premier League club. Neal got the assist for Blackpool’s first goal and nearly scored for them to. David Vaughan was rested and wasn’t in the squad at all.

Morecambe 1-3 Burnley

Morecambe went ahead in the 12th minute and spent nearl 20 minutes leading the former Premier League side. Bur Burnley fought back with three goals including a penalty and it was quite a boring and predictable result in the end.
Darren Moss played the first 72 minutes for Morecambe. Conceding the penalty probably didn’t help his cause but he did stay on for eleven minutes afterwards so he probably wasn’t substituted for that reason.

Carling Cup Results 24th August 2010 Part 1

Blackburn Rovers 3-1 Norwich City
Blackburn are a good side but they are slightly lacking in the goalscorer department. The answer? Sign a striker from a top four team. It worked last season with Chelsea’s Franco di Santo and so far the ploy looks set to reap still more dividends this season. Mame Biram Diouf didn’t even wait thirty minutes before he got onto the scoresheet and he went on to get a hat-trick. Exciting stuff if you’re a Blackburn fam but not so good if you want some Carling Cup giant-killing romance. Norwich did have a go at fighting back but as their goal came in the 90th minute, the referee’s whistle got in the way of any attempts to build on this comeback.
Jason Brown was nowhere to be seen for Blackburn. Mark Bunn played in goal and England star Frankie Fielding was on the bench. This sounds bad but I do kind of hope Jason’s injured. Because if he’s not injured, he’s being ignored.
Andrew Crofts was rested due to a slight knock but Norwich didn’t bring in Owain Tudur Jones or Josh Dawkin.

Bradford City 1-2 Preston North End (after extra time)
League Two Bradford managed to hold Preston to a draw in normal time but Preston got a winner in extra time which is just so unromantic. Although of course it’s Bradford, not Preston who are the former Premier League side.
Michael Flynn didn’t play for Bradford as he’s going to have a groin operation. I’m not sure why as it I heard he had a back injury.
Preston were without Paul Parry. I’m a bit worried about him. He’d just got back into the first team but then he’s missed the last two matches, even though he has appeared in a reserve match. Maybe he needs the reserve matches to help him get up to literal and figurative speed.
Craig Morgan did play for Preston though.

Brentford 2-1 Hull City
Yes, that’s more like it! I do actually like Hull and Brentford are technically a rival London team but this is what the Carling Cup’s all about. At least until Arsenal come into the competition. Hull took the lead in the 8th minute but Brentford got an equaliser fourteen minutes later before finding a late winner.
Nicky Adams was absent from Brentford’s squad. He’s not cup-tied so that’s not why.

Crewe Alexandra 0-1 Ipswich Town (after extra time)
Crewe struggled in their opening league games but a 7-0 victory over Barnet seemed to give them a bit of confidence. Ipswich have been on great form in the Championship this season but League Two Crewe took them to extra time.
Ipswich found a winner in the 101st minute but only though s stunning goal, the kind that more experienced keepers than Rhys Taylor couldn’t have stopped.
Troy Brown played his first ninety minutes – plus another thirty – for Ipswich.

Leeds United 1-2 Leicester City
Leeds led for much of this tie after taking the lead through the supersub that beat poor Millwall at the weekend. But Leicester equalised shortly after the hour mark before winning a penalty in the 89th minute. This penaty was scored – saving them from more penalties half an hour later.
Sanchez Watt came off the bench for Leeds after 72 minutes. I’m sure he was just being rested.
Leicester’s Andy King was also rested but at half-time they realised they just couldn’t do without him. Well I could have told them that. He made a big difference to Leicester’s attack and also playing his part in defence, clearing a Leeds shot off the line.

Welsh Player News 24th August

Gareth Bale says Tottenham are confident of beating Young Boys, while Harry Redknapp takes the credit for Gareth’s new haircut. Oh and his goals too.

Dave Edwards could play for Wolverhampton Wanderers in their Carling Cup clash against Southend United after recovering from a groin injury.

I’ve found a new Welshman! Well I might have done. Former Bournemouth star Brett Pitman, who recently turned down Premier League side Blackpool to play in the Championship with Bristol City, could be eligible to represent Wales. Brett was born in Jersey and is apparently allowed to represent any Home Nations side. It’s a bit of a funny rule and let’s see how he does with struggling Bristol City but with Simon Church (Reading) and Ched Evans (Sheffield United) not regulars for their clubs, Craig Bellamy’s dodgy knees and Bristol City loanee Sam Vokes maybe kept out of the starting line-up by Brett, Wales could be left with Millwall’s Steve Morison and Rob Earnshaw, both great players who have done well for Wales but they’re not enough on their own!
Guess who is so tempted to go through Wikipedia looking for footballers born in Jersey!

Jason Koumas is set to make his first start for Cardiff City after gaining match fitness. Carling Cup opponents Peterborough United probably think Jason should give it a few more days before playing.

Rob Earnshaw says Cardiff City are the team to beat after they signed players including Wales team-mates Jason Koumas and Craig Bellamy. But he doesn’t necessarily think Cardiff are now the top side in the Championship. As for Nottingham Forest, once they start winning again there will be no stopping them.

Cardiff City’s Jonathan Meades has gone to Norway to play for FK Moss on loan.

Robbie Savage thinks victory over league leaders Queen’s Park Rangers will be the perfect way to get Derby County’s season going.

Swansea City’s Kerry Morgan is back at Newport County on loan again after helping them into the Blue Square Premier last season. He could have gone to a League side but he wanted to go to Newport. Surprisingly, only four of his new team-matres seem to be Welsh – Glyn Garner, Chris Todd, Andrew Hughes and Kieron Blackburn, who is on loan at Merthyr Town, formerly Merthyr Tydfil.

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler won’t be making a move for Grant Basey. I’m sure Aberdeen will be very glad to hear it.

Carling Cup Fixture 25th August 2010

Fulham v Port Vale
Fulham are yet to win a competitive fixture this season but they’re also yet to lose one. Port Vale have started well in League Two but that doesn’t mean they’re ready for Premier League opposition.
Simon Davies will probably be rested. Fulham are unlikely to play their strongest side and Simon might want to rest his foot.
Gareth Owen should be in defence for Port Vale but Lewis Haldane is probably still a long way from full fitness.

Champions' League Fixture 25th August 2010

Tottenham Hotspur v Young Boys
Tottenham came back from 3-0 down to lose 3-2. They go into the second leg with a home advantage and two away goals.
Gareth Bale was the player who inspired Tottenham’s fightback and with two goals against Stoke City at the weekend, the Welshman’s confidence could be higher than ever.

Welsh Player News 24th August 2010

Craig Bellamy says he can’t get Cardiff promoted all on his own. But there’s more to come from him.

Either way, the fans love him.

Gary Speed thinks Craig can go back to the Premier League anytime he likes but Robbie Savage thinks Craig might prefer to stay at Cardiff City for the rest of his career. Cardiff manager Dave Jones says it’s far too early to think beyond next season. He thinks it’s a possibility if Cardiff get promoted but if this happens, would Manchester City be happy to sell Craig to Cardiff? And would Cardiff be able to afford him?

Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan isn’t very happy about Craig’s arrival at Cardiff City. Not because Cardiff beat them 4-0 (although it probably didn’t help) but the financial implications generally.

No surrise to hear that Craig is in the Championship Football League Team of the Week.

Is Craig the missing piece in the Cardiff jigsaw?

Or is he a cuddly piranha?

Bradford City’s Michael Flynn is going to have a groin operation tomorrow and will be ruled out for a month.

Carling Cup Fixtures 24th August 2010 Part 5

Watford v Notts County
Watford should be very afraid. Not so much by Notts County’s Carling Cup form but Notts County fif knock Wigan Athletic out of one of FA Cup last season and Wigan were quite good then.
Jonathan Bond will probably be on the bench again for Watford.
Ben Davies got lots of goals and assists for Notts County last season. He broke his assist duck at the weekend but the first goal is still to come.

West Ham United v Oxford United

West Ham don’t have a single point this season, never mind a win. Oxford thrashed Bristol Rovers 6-1 in the last round.
Danny Gabbidon will hope to keep his place in West Ham’s defence but Jack Collison will be out until the New Year.
Oxford’s Rhys Day is out with a long-term knee injury.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Southend United
You might say Southend could do without this sort of distraction but it must have been a very nice distraction in the last round when they beat Bristol City.
It looks like Wolves are going to give some fringe players a chance in the Carling Cup. So let’s hope that means Wayne Hennessey in goal and possibly new signing Jake Cassidy will get on the bench. Dave Edwards and Sam Vokes (who’s on loan at Bristol City anyway) are both injured but maybe David Jones will get to play despite being a first-team regular.
Peter Gilbert won’t overcome his ankle injury in time to play for Southend.

Carling Cup Fixtures 24th August 2010 Part 4

Sunderland v Colchester United
Sunderland are yet to win in the Premier League while Colchester are yet to lose. But this is still the Carling Cup.
Lee Beevers and Lloyd James have only made brief substitute appearances for Colchester this season but maybe they’ll get more of a chance tomorrow night. And maybe Tom Bender will get a place on the bench.

Tranmere Rovers v Swansea City
Swansea have never been beyond the fourth round in his competition. They were knocked out by Scunthorpe United last season but that’s probably not as funny as being knocked out by the great Havant & Waterlooville in the FA Cup.
Tranmere are of course without Ash Taylor (knee) but maybe loanee Kayleden Brown will get a start.
Swansea might rest a few players for this clash so maybe Ashley Williams and David Cotterill will be on the bench with David Cornell, Neil Taylor, Joe Allen and Jazz Richards given the chance to impress.

Carling Cup Fixtures 24th August 2010 Part 3

Portsmouth v Crystal Palace
Portsmouth won the FA Cup not so very long ago. Now even the Carling Cup looks beyond their grasp.
Andy Dorman should keep his place in Crystal Palace’s starting line-up. Lewis Price will be hoping a spot of goalkeeper-rotation might be in order.

Reading v Northampton
Reading had a great run in the FA Cup last season so maybe they could do the same.
Simon Church, Hal Robson-Kanu and Jake Taylor could play a part in this match after staying on the bench at the weekend.
I don’t think Northampton will be bringing in their reserve keeper. A match against Reading probably wouldn’t be the best introduction for 18 year old Paul Walker. Although who knows?

Southampton v Bolton Wanderers

Southampton haven’t won any games in the league this season while Bolton are unbeaten. This looks like a possible Cupset but maybe I’m being too romantic although that’s not something I’m usually accused of.
If Southampton choose to rest some players, Ryan Doble and Anthony Pulis could get into the squad.
Sam Ricketts will be hoping for a chance to impress for Bolton after being left on the bench for the opening two Premier League matches.

Stoke City v Shrewsbury Town
Shrewsbury are unbeaten this campaign while Stoke haven’t got any points at all. But Stoke are still three divisions ahead of Shrewsbury.
Danny Collins was back in the starting line-up alongside new captain Ryan Shawcross for Stoke’s last Premier League game. But manager Tony Pulis might not pick his strongest players.
Tom Bradshaw will be hoping for more than an appearance on the bench for Shrewsbury.

Carling Cup Fixtures 24th August 2010 Part 2

Milton Keynes Dons v Blackpool
Not so very long ago, Milton Keynes Dons, as Wimbledon, were in the Premier League. Blackpool could only dream of now their positions are reversed and a win for MK Dons would be a giant-killing. We usually like a bit of romantic giant-killing in football but with Blackpool already the star of their own romance (even if they did have their hearts vaguely broken by Arsenal), maybe people aren’t hoping for a giant-killing at all.
Jermaine Easter will be hoping to break his goal drought for MK Dons.
If Ian Holloway opts tor rest some of his stars such as David Vaughan, there could be places in the starting line-up for Neal Eardley and Rob Edwards.

Morecambe v Burnley
Morecambe and Burnley play each other for the first time ever in this match. Morecambe have already seen off Coventry City although they haven’t beaten anyone else all season.
Darren Moss shoud keep his place in Morecambe’s defence.

Peterborough United v Cardiff City
Imagine little Peterborough taking on big bad Craig Bellamy and winning. But I love Cardiff so this is another giant-killing I definitely don’t want to see.
Arron Davies played well in his first start for Peterborough so maybe he’ll keep his place.
Craig might be rested for this clash due to his longstanding knee problems but I’m sure he’ll want to play. Jason Koumas might even be able to start this time if his fitness is good enough. If not, maybe Adam Matthews will keep his place in the starting line-up.
Darcy Blake was a late dropout from Cardiff’s last match with an ankle problem and he is expected to miss out again. Aaron Wildig has returned to training after recovering from a knee injury but he won’t be ready for tomorrow’s match.

Carling Cup Fixtures 24th August 2010 Part 1

Blackburn Rovers v Norwich City
Norwich are on a winning run at the moment but Blackburn’s own run came to an end last weekend.
It is thought that Blackburn will rest first-choice keeper Paul Robinson but Jason Brown is not one of the suggested alternatives. Maybe he’s injured.
Norwich are probably less likely than Blackburn to bring in their fringe players but Owain Tudur Jones is really good and deserves a chance. It would be really nice to see Josh Dawkin too, hint hint.

Bradford City v Preston North End
Preston have finally got their first points in the Premier League but a match against League Two Bradford City should be easy, shouldn’t it? Or maybe not. Just ask Bristol City.
Michael Flynn is going to have a groin operation tomorrow so he won’t be playing for Bradford for a while.
Craig Morgan should be in defence for Preston and Paul Parry might also be in contention after playing with the reserves on Friday instead of Preston’s league match on Saturday.

Brentford v Hull City
Brentford aren’t having a great league season so far but beating Hull should help cheer them up. The last team to giant-kill Hull were Blackpool. They won’t be doing that this season.
Brentford’s new signing Nicky Adams will be hoping for more than a cameo role this time.

Crewe Alexandra v Ipswich Town
Crewe will be on a high after winning their last match 7-0… and they didn’t exactly struggle against Derby County in the first round of the Carling Cup.
Crewe goalkeeper Rhys Taylor is on loan from Chelsea but they probably aren’t that worried about him getting cup-tied so he might be able to play.
Troy Brown was on the bench for Ipswich at the end after recovering from an ankle injury but maybe he’ll get to play this time.

Leyton Orient v West Bromwich Albion
The last time West Brom were in the Premier League, they were knocked out of the Carling Cup by League One Hartlepool United. Orient are also in League One.
Goalkeeper Boaz Myhill is expected to make his West Brom debut in this match.

Millwall v Middlesbrough
Both these clubs reached landmark Cup finals in 2004. Millwall got to the FA Cup final where they not unreasonably lost to Manchester United. Middlesbrough won their first major piece of silverware, the Carling Cup. Will 2010 be the new 2004?
Steve Morison ia expected to keep his place up front for Millwall.
Danny Coyne might possibly get the chance to start for Middlesbrough but don’t be surprised if he’s on the bench. Rhys Williams is definitely out with his dodgy pelvis.

Welsh Player News 23rd August 2010

Much-missed Aston Villa defender James Collins has made his comeback from injury in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burton Albion. Villa won 5-0. Assuming he doesn’t have a replapse, he should be ready for Villa’s Europa League match on Thursday.

Ryan Giggs says Wayne Rooney makes a big contribution whether he’s scoring goals or not.

Sir Alex Ferguson tells Michael Owen he is an important member of the first-team squad. Though you could say the same about any substitute.

But Ferguson can’t say the same for Owen Hargreaves – even though he’d probably like to be able to.

Michael Owen was present to watch a team of future England hopefuls as Stanwix Juniors played at Wembley.

Michael says he’s ready for the new season now.

Interview with new Sheffield United manager Gary Speed.

Gary thinks his players need to adopt a more attacking mentality following the defeat to Middlesbrough.

Scottish Premier League Results 22nd August 2010

Celtic 4-0 St Mirren
Joe Ledley played at left back again, even though he doesn’t like it, and it didn’t seem to hamper him too much as he scored his first Ceutc goal in an entertaining but rather one-sided match

Hibernian 0-3 Rangers

Celtic might be back to their old selves but Rangers are going to battle them all the way. David Stephens sat on the bench for the losing side.

Kilmarnock 0-1 Motherwell
Kyle Letheren could be wondering he did the right thing after this match. After spending some time with Motherwell, he decided to play for Kilmarnock this season. But maybe Kilmarnock could try playing him. It might work.

Championship Result 22nd August 2010

Middlesbrough 1-0 Sheffield United
New manager Gary Speed found himself on the losing side as Sheffield United faced the favourites for promotion. Not that Middlesbrough have been looking like promotion favourites recently. They did get their first win in this match but that’s all you can say really. United’s Ched Evans had one of very few goalscoring chances but his shot was saved.
Danny Coyne was on the bench for Middlesbrough.

Premier League Results 22nd August 2010

Fulham 2-2 Manchester United
Brede Hangeland scored for both teams as Fulham and Manchester United fought it out in an entertaining draw, which both Mark Hughes and Alex Ferguson felt was a fair result.
Simon Davies equalised following Manchester United’s opening with a great goal which makes me wish even more that he hadn’t retired. But if retiring means he can keep scoring goals like that, it’s great news for Fulham.
Ryan Giggs and Michael Owen came off the bench with the score at 1-1 in an effort to find a winner. But they didn’t and Ryan is very disappointed. Ferguson thought Ryan should have taken the penalty – but maybe Ryan could see it shouldn’t have been awarded.

Newcastle 6-0 Aston Villa

The return of James Collins from injury can’t come too soon for Aston Villa. True, Newcastle were inspired and determined and even a full-strength Aston Villa would have found them a handful but without James and Carlos Cuéllar, Villa were swept aside.

League One News 23rd August 2010

New Brentford signing Nicky Adams says he’s NOT injury prone. He is, however, prone to rather worrying descriptions of his injuries. But part of the reason why the Leicester manager was ignoring him was because he was injured. But he’s not injury prone.

Carlisle United’s Jason Price should return from a thigh injury in the next week or so.

Daniel Nardiello has a small muscle strain but the manager doesn’t think it’s very bad. That’s a relief, Daniel has spent far too much time on the sidelines recently.

League Two Results 21st August 2010 Part 2

Crewe Alexandra 7-0 Barnet
Crewe hadn’t won any matches before Saturday so when they went ahead, they made sure it stayed that way, registering the biggest win of the weekend in the Football League. Barnet remain bottom of the table with one point.
Rhys Taylor was in goal for Crewe but he might as well not have been there most of the time although he did prove he stayed awake with one very good save.

Rotherham United 6-4 Cheltenham Town
Cheltenham were 3-1 up after 36 minutes. Then they must have relaxed a bit and forgotten that Rotherham are promotion favourites for a reason. To their credit they did fight back and get a fourth goal but that doesn’t help much when the other team’s already scored six.
Mark Bradley had a stomach strain but was able to sit on the bench for Rotherham. Cheltenham’s Josh Low played 79 minutes, which was probably more than enough. On the positive side, he came close to scoring He might have conceded the penalty but BBC Sport says it was someone else.

Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Aldershot Town

The two goals came within two minutes of each other but neither side could get all three points. Both have made a good start to the season though which is good although as Shrewsbury knows they need to keep it going all season.
Tom Bradshaw was on the bench for Shrewsbury.
Darren Jones had another good game for Aldershot. Aaron Morris came off the bench in the 88th minute.

Southend United 1-3 Port Vale
Southend’s goal difference keeps them out of the bottom two but only just. As if last season wasn’t bad enough for Southend supporters, this one looks like it won’t be much fun either. But it might not be entirely hopeless. They’ve lost to Port Vale, who are one of the best sides in the division and Aldershot Town, who were in the play-offs last season. And they did beat Bristol City.
Southend again had to do without the injured Peter Gilbert but they did have one Welsh defender to help them out – although I’m sure Gareth Owen didn’t mean to put the ball into his own net.

Stevenage 3-1 Stockport County
New boys Stevenage got their first league victory against Stockport, another relegation team who are struggling again although they didn’t play badly.
After being hailed by his manager as one of the best goalkeepers in the league, Owain fon Williams conceded three but that’s not his fault, you’re kind of asking for it if you say things like that.

League Two Results 21st August 2010 Part 1

Accrington Stanley 3-0 Macclesfield Town
I thought Macclesfield Town would finish in the bottom two this season and they’re certainly in the bottom two now. Accrington are unbeaten this season.
Sam Wedgbury played his first complete game for Macclesfield.

Burton Albion 3-2 Morecambe
Last season, Burton had a good start and then tailed off while Morecambe put together a great run towards the end and got into the play-offs. This season looks similar, which should be some comfort for Morecambe fans. Morecambe were winning 2-1 but Burton came back to take the points.
Tony James was back on the bench for Burton. Morecambe had the sense to play their own Welsh defender, Darren Moss, who got the assist for their first goal.

Bury 1-1 Northampton Town

Northampton took the lead at Bury through a penalty and although Bury equalised, Northampton held firm and doubled their points tally for this season.
Paul Walker was on the bench for Northampton.

Chesterfield 4-0 Hereford United
Hereford’s start to the season hasn’t been too bad but promotion contenders Chesterfield, now in second place, were too much for them on this occasion.
Ryan Valentine usually takes great penalties and he did on this occasion but the goalkeeper made an impossibly good save. Chesterfield were only winning 2-0 at the time. To quote various commentators, the score would have been different if that had gone in. Without a doubt. Not the way Ryan was hoping to celebrate his 300th Football League appearance.
Chesterfield were without all their Welshmen. Robert Page is injured, Craig Davies is suspended and Mark Crossley is apparently just old. He’s also famous for saving penalties so Ryan wouldn’t have done any better with him.
Ryan, namesake Ryan Green and Stuart Fleetwood, who hit a shot against the bar, all played the full match for Hereford.

League One Results 21st August 2010 Part 2

Peterborough United 4-2 Huddersfield Town
I was a bit surprised to see that many were predicting an instant return to the Championship for Peterborough – and, for that matter, Huddersfield - and certainly to begin with Peterborough didn’t look obviously like a team who were Championship-bound. But after being 2-0 down after the first 33 minutes, Peterborough fought back to a 4-2 victory although admittedly Huddersfield had forgotten how to play football during half-time which probably helped.
Before the match, it was suggested that Arron Davies might get a place in the starting line-up and this prediction turned out to be absolutely right. Arron nearly scored so let’s hope he keeps his place.

Rochdale 1-2 Colchester United
Both managers were unusually complimentary about their opposite numbers as Rochdale played well but didn’t manage to prevent Colchester from taking the points.
Rochdale didn’t seem to have any Welsh players last season but this season they have Matt Done, who signed from Hereford United. I didn’t know about him when he was at Hereford either but it’s not surprising they’ve got loads of Welsh players, they’re right next to Wales. Matt stayed on the bench for this match
Lee Beevers and Lloyd James were on the bench for Colchester and Lee made his first appearance for Colchester for ages with a 79th minute substitute appearance.

Swindon Town 1-1 Brentford

Brentford got their first point away to Swindon Town. Swindon are only a few points above them but they didn’t have a great start last season either and they got to the play-off final. Both teams played well and had chances to win it but neither team did it.
Nicky Adams has only just signed for Brentford from Leicester City but he was on the bench and made his debut as a 68th minute substitute.

Tranmere Rovers 0-3 Bournemouth

Tranmere aren’t really one of the big sides in League One but Bournemouth will rightly be happy with a 3-0 away win. This result might suggest a problem with Tranmere’s defence but they seemed to struggle more in attack. As for Bournemouth, they certainly look the strongest of the promoted teams.
Kayelden Brown made a half-time substitute appearance for Tranmere.
Rhoys Wiggins played well in defence for Bournemouth and showed he’s not that bad in attack either. Joe Partington was on the bench but he correctly predicted that Josh McQuoid would score and got a hug in return – not to mention an invitation to stay at Josh’s house the night before the next home game. Maybe he’ll get a lot more than a hug next time.

Walsall 2-1 Plymouth Argyle

Plymouth opened the scoring in the first half but Walsall fought back to take the win. Plymouth didn’t play badly but they’ll need to improve their defending although for now they are only two points from the play-off places.
Sean Geddes was on the bench for Walsall.
Carl Fletcher played the full match for Plymouth and got what is likely to be the first of many yellow cards. They’ll miss him when he’s suspended.

Yeovil Town 0-2 Hartlepool United
Hartlepool looked like a team in trouble but after this away win, maybe Yeovil are in more trouble still. They really didn’t play well but even so, Hartlepool were quite lucky.
Nathan Jones was in the starting line-up for Yeovil but he played little more than an hour before getting booed off. Even though it was his free kick that led to Yeovil nearly scoring.

Carlisle United 4-1 Milton Keynes Dons
Both these teams have a Welsh striker who used to play for Millwall on the books – and both seem to be continuing where they left off at the end of last season. Carlisle are on good form, getting lots of wins and because it’s the beginning of the season, that kind of form has put them right at the top of the table. MK Dons on the other hand are a bit hit-and-miss.
Carlisle were actually without their Welsh ex-Millwall striker as Jason Price has a thigh injury but Jermaine Easter was playing for MK Dons which was quite unlucky really as it was an incident between Jermaine and Carlisle’s Ian Harte – for which Harte should arguably have got a red - which spurred Carlisle on to win the match. Jermaine is also on his longest run without a goal in MK Dons colours – 854 minutes according to Vital MK Dons.

Exeter City 2-2 Bristol Rovers
This was a great game in terms of entertainment and incident but wasn’t a great match for the Welshmen - although at least none of them actually lost.
Daniel Nardiello started well, giving Exeter the goal he’d wanted to score for team-mate Adam Stansfield, who died of cancer last week. Adam wore the No 9 shirt and Daniel’s goal came in the ninth minute. Thirteen minutes later, he left the field injured.
Team-mate Richard Duffy didn’t have a great day either - he was sent off just after half-time. He was so sure he was was getting a red card, he was off down the tunnel before the referee had got his card out. Rob Edwards on the other hand got his first start of the season and managed to stay on the pitch for the full match with only a yellow card to his name. No sign of Andy Marriott, at least not in the squad.
For the away saide, Byron Anthony was hoping for more goals after s very late winner last week but instead he ended up conceding a penalty – though it was perhaps wrongly awarded, it was maybe more of a player sandwich than a penalty. Ben Swallow was on the bench, alongside another young Welshmen who is called either Eliot Richard or Eliot Richards, depending on what you read. BBC Sport calls him Richard although they once spelled Danny Coyne’s name JONES (mistaking him for Middlesbrough’s other goalkeeper Brad, now a Liverpool player) that probably isn’t conclusive. The Bristol Rovers site and Wikipedia says Richards so I’ll go with Eliot Richards for now.

Notts County 1-0 Dagenham & Redbridge

Notts County finally lifted themselves off the bottom of the table – and all the way up to 16th – when they beat one of the sides promoted with them.
It was no surprise to see that the player who got the assist for County’s goal was Ben Davies, who made a great pass to goalscorer Craig Westcarr.
Dagenham played well but didn’t take their chances – that’s always a danger when the only Welshman in your team is a goalkeeper, in this case Tony Roberts.
