Carling Cup Results 24th August 2010 Part 4

Southampton 0-1 Bolton Wanderers
For the first time this season, Sam Ricketts played for Bolton. And for the first time, they won and kept a clean sheet. Coincidence? Probably. It’s only Bolton’s third match, it’s far too early to be making connections like that. But it probably wasn’t easy for the defenders, making sure Bolton hung onto their 1-0 lead and Sam had a key role to play in the goal.
I thought Southampton might give Ryan Doble a place in the squad but he wasn’t there.

Stoke City 2-1 Shrewsbury Town
Stoke went 2-0 up early on but Shrewsbury kept going and got a goal back in the 79th minute. There was no big shock but it’s still a great result for League Two Shrewsbury. It’s not so good for Stoke, who really look like they might be in trouble this season.
Stoke’s Danny Collins was rested but Ryan Shawcross kept his place in the weakened squad.
Tom Bradshaw made a 59th minute substitute appearance.

Sunderland 2-0 Colchester United
Two early Sunderland goals were enough to see off Colchester. It seems cruel to say it was a routine win for Sunderland but it kind of pretty much was.
Lloyd James was given his first start in a Colchester shirt while Lee Beevers made his second substitute appearance in four days.
