Bolton Wanderers 4-0 Wigan Athletic
Bolton have improved a lot under Owen Coyle – they’re now eight points above the play-offs. Wigan, however, are learning that beating Liverpool doesn’t necessarily mean you’re good enough for the Premier League. Just ask Portsmouth and Reading.
There were no Welsh players in this fixture. Bolton’s Sam Ricketts is suspended following his red card in the match against Sunderland and Jason Koumas probably couldn’t be further from Roberto Martinez’ plans for Wigan if he was on the moon.
Burnley 1-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers
At the beginning of the season, Burnley looked the most solid of the three promoted teams – at least until Birmingham City got their impressive act together. Wolves, on the other hand, looked in deep trouble. Wolves are far from safe but they really look like they could survive. Burnley kind of don’t.
David Jones was the only ‘Welsh’ player to play in this fixture. He kept his place in the starting line-up and came close to scoring.
Sam Vokes has promised to score the next chance he gets but he didn’t get the chance in this game – he was kept on the bench. Wayne Hennessey was also on the bench. Wayne thinks he’ll have to leave Wolves if he can’t get back into the first team – he doesn’t want to lose his place as Wales No 1. Although it has to be said, he didn’t look rusty against Sweden.
Chelsea 4-1 West Ham United
To lose two goalkeepers in a week suggests carelessness but Ross Turnbull acquitted himself annoyingly well in the Chelsea goal, sending them back up to the top of the table. West Ham remained three points outside the relegation zone.
The promotion of Ross Turnbull to the starting line-up meant that Welsh goalkeeper Rhys Taylor took his place on the bench. In some ways, although I certainly wouldn’t wish an injury on an player, I would love to see Rhys play in the Premier League. But if he did that, I’d have to support Chelsea and I don’t think I could do that even for one game.
Danny Gabbidon returned from a hamstring injury to take his place in the starting line-up. Goal.com thinks he did well but they also seem to think he’s a Frenchman. Would I be even mentioning him if he was a Frenchman? (Well, if he was eligible for Wales I would.) But Goal.com are right that Danny did well. He kept the score down which is often all you can do against Chelsea.
Jack Collison, who had a knee problem, was on the bench. The News of the World says he needs to have a knee operation but that doesn’t mean it’s true.
