Championship Results 16th March Part 3

Swansea City 0-2 West Bromwich Albion

West Brom took the lead on 79 minutes after conceding a soft penalty. A second goal followed, condemning Swansea to another defeat.
Ashley Williams was the only Welshman to start, with David Cotterill joining him on the pitch after 80 minutes. David Cornell and Jazz Richards stayed on the bench.

Championship Results 16th March Part 2

Peterborough United 1-2 Doncaster Rovers
Peterborough remain eight points from safety after Doncaster snatched a late win that takes them up t0 8th, four points from the play-offs.
And you’ll never guess who Doncaster’s goalscorers were. Gareth Roberts equalised after 67 minutes (Peterborough defender Craig Morgan seems to have provided the assist, it’s always good to see Welsh players playing well together) with another one of his brilliant volleys. John Oster got the winner – his first for Doncaster - in the final minute of normal time, his was a tap-in but in some ways they’re harder because it’s less forgiveable if you miss. I bet Brian Stock would have scored too if he hadn’t been out with a back injury.

Plymouth Argyle 3-2 Bristol City
Plymouth squandered a two-goal lead, with Bristol City looking set to share the points. But an astounding last-minute goal from Carl Fletcher changed all that.
Lewin Nyatanga started on the bench for Bristol City but came on for the last ten minutes. Christian Ribeiro returned from injury to take his place on the bench. He was hoping to go back to Colchester for another loan but Bristol City might need him.

Reading 1-0 Queen’s Park Rangers
Neil Warnock lost his 100% record with QPR after his side conceded a late penalty. Simon Church came off the bench for Reading after 67 minutes.

Sheffield United 3-0 Blackpool

Sheffield United put themselves back within three points of the play-offs Blackpool lost for the second consecutive game but they could still join Sheffield United in the top six.
Ched Evans missed out for Sheffield United with a shoulder injury. Neal Eardley, Rob Edwards and David Vaughan all started for Blackpool but Neal was substituted after 41 minutes. He has a hamstring injury and could be out for several weeks.

Championship Results 16th March Part 1

Barnsley 2-1 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest’s poor away form continued as they lost to Barnsley. Robert Earnshaw conceded the penalty that led to the second goal but I still love him. And he did score an equaliser in the last minute, it’s not his fault it was ruled out. He and Chris Gunter both played the full match.

Coventry City 1-2 Cardiff City

Coventry took the lead after 32 minutes but Cardiff equalised just before halftime, before literally stealing the points in stoppage time. Cardiff remain in the play-off places.
Freddy Eastwood was a second-half substitute for Coventry. Darcy Blake and Adam Matthews – who is apparently not going to Arsenal - both kept their places in the starting line-up. Darcy nearly scored but it went over the crossbar but it didn’t matter in the end Aaron Wildig was on the bench.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Leicester City
Crystal Palace remain out of the bottom three on goal difference while Leicester moved above Swansea City in the play-offs.
Andy King played the full match for Leicester and nearly opened the scoring early on. Nicky Adams was a late substitute.

Derby County 2-2 Middlesbrough

Both sides took the lead in this match and Derby probably thought they’d won it, only for Middlesbrough to score in the 90th minute.
Robbie Savage started the match but he was substituted after 63 minutes, only for his replacement to score four minutes later. Don’t you just hate it when that happens?
Middlesbrough’s Rhys Williams played very well until the 87th minute when he was sent off. Danny Coyne did make at least one fine save but as usual the Boro fans are concentrating on the two he let in.

Premier League Result 16th March

Wigan Athletic 1-2 Aston Villa
Wigan opened the scoring in the wrong net before getting an equaliser. But Villa came back in the second half and took all three points. They remain seventh but they’re three points away from fourth place with a game in hand.
Jason Koumas wasn’t selected by Wigan. James Collins played the full match in defence for Aston Villa.

Champions' League Result 16th March

Chelsea 0-1 Inter Milan
Chelsea were knocked out of the Champions’ League by their old manager, 1-3 on aggregate. Rhys Taylor was on the bench.
I should be really happy but I’ve got some friends who are Chelsea fans.

League One Fixture 17th March

Exeter v Bristol Rovers
Exeter badly need a win – but that won’t be enough to get them out of the bottom four. But a win isn’t impossible. Bristol Rovers have shown themselves to be fully capable of beating the top sides and losing to the bottom sides.
Andy Marriott was on the bench for Exeter in their last couple of games after suffering a neck injury. He could be recalled as Exeter seem to be missing him. Rob Edwards has been out of the squad entirely. Richard Duffy and Stuart Fleetwood should be in the squad however, Richard in the starting line-up and Stuart on the bench.
Byron Anthony was carried off during Bristol Rovers’ last match with a suspected broken leg. Scans have revealed the leg is not broken and there’s a very slight chance he could feature in this match – but it’s not likely. Ben Swallow should be on the bench.

Interesting article

I was reading an old Four Four Two today which had a feature on the best 50 players in the Football League.

Jason Koumas was named asas the best player. Gareth Bale was third (in fifth is Giles Barnes, who has played 24 games in the Premier League without winning).
Robert Earnshaw was 9th and Freddy Eastwood 11th.
Boaz Myhill, Joe Ledley and Jermaine Easter are in the Top 50.
Andy Marriott, Robert Page, Matt Sommer and Mark Jones are among those who just missed out.
