Championship Fixtures 15th January 2011 (Part 2)

Millwall v Ipswich Town
Paul Jewell (OMG what were his parents thinking???) takes charge at Ipswich following their 7-0 loss to Chelsea and slightly different result against Arsenal. His last job was managing Derby to a record low number of points in the Premier League. He’ll be hoping this job goes a lot better. They take on Millwall, who are unbeaten in eight. I won’t say how long it is since they last conceded a goal. I don’t want to jinx them. But it’s quite a long time.
Ipswich face a London team for the third time in a week. Chelsea demolished them, Arsenal rolled over for them… what will Millwall do?
Steve Morison will start for Millwall.
Troy Brown is still out with a hamstring injury.

Norwich City v Cardiff City

Only goal difference separates these two sides in the Championship, with Cardiff having the advantage. Cardiff have only won at Carrow Road twice in their history – and the second one was this season.
Andrew Crofts should be recalled to the starting line-up after missing the FA Cup defeat to Leyton Orient. Owain Tudur Jones could also be in the squad.
Craig Bellamy has allegedly been arrested for assault but he is likely to play if he’s passed fit. Norwich are one of Craig’s former clubs. If Craig scores, it will be his 150th.
Darcy Blake and Adam Matthews will probably be in the squad, with Jason Koumas joining them if he isn’t injured again. Jonathan Meades and Aaron Wildig have also been on the bench in recent weeks.

Nottingham Forest v Portsmouth
We all know about Nottingham Forest’s amazing home record but one team they struggle to beat at home is Portsmouth. All it would take is one defeat and they wouldn’t be unbeaten anymore. I know how that feels. Forest haven’t lost home or away since November though so they probably know what they’re doing now.
Chris Gunter will start for Forest. Robert Earnshaw has scored three in his last three matches for Forest but as that includes no goals in the last two, he could be on the bench again because that’s what the manager’s like. Rob thinks Forest can keep their home form going and get into the promotion race.
Watch a long but interesting interview with Chris and Rob.

FA Cup Results 8th January 2011 Third Round (Part Four)

Southampton 2-0 Blackpool
Southampton might be two leagues lower than Blackpool but apparently they were the favourites for this match, with Blackpool expected to rest a number of players. Ian Holloway made nine changes, filling the bench with players so lowly, they don’t even have their own page on BBC Sport.
It’s a good thing Blackpool didn’t get relegated to League One last season really. They’ve lost to every League One club they’ve played this season. Southampton’s next challenge will be rather more difficult: they’re at home again, but to Manchester United.
Neal Eardley was one of the two who weren’t replaced. He could have got Blackpool an assist – and it wasn’t his fault that he didn’t. Rob Edwards played 90 minutes.

Stoke City 1-1 Cardiff City
It’s fair to say this wasn’t the result I was dreaming of but it’s a great result all the same and you never know what will happen. Cardiff and Stoke looked evenly matched and although it’s true Stoke left some of their best players on the bench, Cardiff were forced to leave some of theirs out of the squad entirely. Cardiff did of course knock out Middlesbrough a few years ago in the semi-final and Middlesbrough were quite good then. The winner of the replay will be away at Doncaster Rovers or Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Stoke rested top players including Danny Collins but Cardiff were without Craig Bellamy (knees), Jason Koumas (warm-up injury, maybe his toe again) and Jay Bothroyd (hamstring).
Ryan Shawcross, perhaps surprisingly, kept his place in Stoke’s team.
Adam Matthews and Darcy Blake made substitute appearances for Cardiff. Jonathan Meades was on the bench for a second successive game, this time joined by Aaron Wildig.

Sunderland 1-2 Notts County
Not many teams have won at the Stadium of Light this season. Sunderland have done so on a number of occasions but Blackpool are the only other side to win there in a League match. Notts County are now only two divisions below Sunderland, they haven’t been doing all that well in League One.
Sunderland did rest a few players, including goalkeeper Craig Gordan but there were starts for Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan among others while Titus Bramble and Jordan Henderson were on the bench. Sunderland weren’t at their best at all and Notts County thoroughly deserved their win. Last season they best another Premier League side, Wigan Athletic, although Notts County were in League Two at that time. Notts County’s next challenge will be either Leicester City or Manchester City.
Ben Davies played in midfield for Notts County. He wasn’t at goal/assist-getting best his best but perhaps that’s just as well given that the transfer window is open. Ben belives Notts County can still get promoted this season.

Fa Cup Fixtures 8th January 2011 (Part 5)

Southampton v Blackpool
So, a win for Southampton would be quite a major giant-killing then. I love football.
Blackpool won’t be taking all members of their first team so it’s unlikely that Neal Eardley and David Vaughan will be there but Rob Edwards has a good chance of playing.

Stokc City v Cardiff City

Cardiff check out their Premier League credentials at Stoke, who are well-known for their intimidating home atmosphere and the large number of resulting wins.
Tony Pulis really wants to take Stoke to the final and he says he will play a strong side so Ryan Shawcross and Danny Collins could feature. Danny believes Stoke could get into Europe – and if they win the FA Cup, that will happen.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/stoke_city/9341881.stm
Craig Bellamy will have a late fitness test on his knee while Jason Koumas might not recover from a niggle. Darcy Blake, Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig are all fit as far as I know. Jonathan Meades was in Cardiff’s last squad so maybe he’ll be there again.
Cardiff manager Dave Jones says Craig is an inspiration and Stoke City manager Tony Pulis feels Craig has a future in management.

Welsh Players Christmas-New Year matches 2011-11 (Championship, Part 1)

Bristol City
Lewin Nyatanga worked his way back into the first team at Bristol City following a loan spell at Peterborough.
Hull A 2-0 (bench)
Reading A 2-1 (bench, on 49)
Palace H 1-1 (starts)
Cardiff H 3-0 (played all)
QPR A 2-2 (played all)

Christian Ribeiro spent some time as a starter for Bristol City but his back injury made an unwelcome return and he hasn’t started since.
Hull A 2-0 (starts, Y foul 22, off 70)
Reading A 2-1 (played all)
Palace H 1-1 (unselected)
Cardiff H 3-0 (bench, on 52)
QPR A 2-2 (bench)

Gavin Williams returned his loan spell at Yeovil Town but he hasn’t even been on the bench so far.

Brett Pitman has continued to make up for his lack of goals in the earlier part of the season with three in his last three matches.
Hull A 2-0 (played all)
Reading A 2-1 (starts, off 76)
Palace H 1-1 (bench, on 58, G1 pen 95)
Cardiff H 3-0 (G1 3, played all)
QPR A 2-2 (G1 50, Y foul 76, played all)

James Wilson continues his long rehabilitation from a knee injury.

Cardiff City
Injuries and poor results combined to keep Darcy Blake on the bench but he’s actually been doing very well.
Coventry H 2-0 (bench)
Watford A 4-1 (played all)
Bristol C A 3-0 (bench, on 16)
Leeds H 2-1 (bench, on 74)

Adam Matthews has been excellent when he plays but he doesn’t get many chances. But he is very young and perhaps Dave Jones is protecting him for once.
Coventry H 2-0 (bench)
Watford A 4-1 (bench, on 35)
Bristol C A 3-0 (bench)
Leeds H 2-1 (bench)

It was thought that Jason Koumas would make a big difference for Cardiff but for the most part he’s been making a difference as a substitute. He could be still builfing up match fitness but maybe he’s just not doing enough to get into the starting line-up. Fans of parent club Wigan Athletic would probably conclude this is possible.
Coventry H 2-0 (bench)
Watford A 4-1 (bench, on 76)
Bristol C A 3-0 (bench, on 67)
Leeds H 2-1 (bench)

Craig Bellamy had one rest over the Christmas period, presumably to give his injured knee a break but with two goals and an assist from his last three games, he’s doing well. Now he just needs to persuade Cardiff City to do well too.
Coventry H 2-0 (A1 21, Y foul 60, G2 83, played all)
Watford A 4-1 (unselected)
Bristol C A 3-0 (played all)
Leeds H 2-1 (G1 11, played all)

Jonathan Meades returned to Cardiff following an unsuccessful attempt to save FK Moss from relegation. He made his first appearance on the bench this season in the win over Leeds United.
Leeds H 2-1 (bench)

Aaron Wildig seems to be in and out of the squad at the moment which is not surprising given his age but most likely very disappointing after playing such a big part last season.
Coventry H 2-0 (bench)
Watford A 4-1 (bench)
Bristol C A 3-0 (unselected)
Leeds H 2-1 (unselected)

Nathaniel Jarvis has been on the bench for Cardiff this season but not since his return from a loan spell at Southend United.

Championship Fixtures (and Postponements) 18th December 2010 (Part 1)

Cardiff City P-P Burnley
South Wales is inches deep in snow and it’s just not safe for visitors.
So Cardiff’s star English striker Jay Bothroyd should recover in time for the next fixture, Craig Bellamy can rest his knee, Jason Koumas can make sure his toe is properly better and the players can recover from their latest epidemic.
Craig has been talking about Feyenoord… and even Feyenoord aren’t happy.
Dave Jones says Cardiff have to deliver on Saturday. And what happens? Snow happens.
Jonathan Meades won’t be able to play for Cardiff until the transfer window opens as he’s been playing for FK Moss. But when the transfer window does open, he’ll be ready to stake his claim.

Coventry City v Norwich City

Coventry are unbeaten in four while Norwich ended a long unbeaten run last week. History would sem to favour Coventry – Norwich have only beaten them once away in the last fifty years. The present would also seem to favour Coventry. They haven’t conceded for nearly 400 minutes. The last team to score against them were Crystal Palace, which probably served as a kick up the backside, as well as a kick into the back of the net.
Freddy Eastwood will be hoping Coventry’s failure to score against Reading last weekend will give him the chance to start.
Andrew Crofts should start for Norwich and a succession of injuries could mean Owain Tudur Jones gets to play again, as long as he’s recovered from being bashed about by Fakenham Town in the Norwich Senior Cup. Norwich City won 3-0 and Josh Dawkin also played 90 minutes.

Derby County v Reading
Derby have lost their last three matches and they’re now three points away from the play-offs – although if they win and Norwich lose, they’ll be back in the top six. And considering Derby’s home form (if you ignore their last home match) and considering Reading are without a win in six (although the last five were draws), they must be in with a good chance of a win.
Reading’s Jem Karacan wants to silence Robbie Savage. Good luck with that. Robbie is expected to play after recovering from an ankle injury but Gareth Roberts, who was substituted after forty minutes of Derby’s defeat to Bristol City, will be out for two or three weeks with a calf injury which must be so annoying when he’s finally broken back into the first team after his last injury.
Simon Church and Hal Robson-Kanu seem to be Reading’s first-choice substitutes at the moment but Reading have drawn their last five and failed to score in their last two so they’re obviously in need of a couple of goalscorers. Hal scored just a few days ago in a reserve match which is quite an achievement considering most reserve matches are being cancelled at the moment. Also in the team was Jake Taylor, who managed 60 minutes after recovering from knee surgery. He’s not ready for the first team yet but he’ll be back in full training soon.

Championship Fixtures 27th November 2010 (Part 2)

Preston North End v Millwall
Another week, another star goalscorer joins Millwall’s ranks. The latest is Josh McQuoid from Bournemouth but unfortunately he plays for Northern Ireland. Millwall’s recent form hasn’t been the best, having won just one of their last five, but at least they’ve done better than Preston, who have won only one of their last nine matches.
Craig Morgan and Paul Parry will hope to be back in Preston’s starting line-up.
Steve Morison should start for Millwall.

Queen’s Park Rangers v Cardiff City
The league’s top two clubs meet in this fixture and whoever wins goes top. If they draw, QPR will go top but Cardiff will have put another point between themselves and Swansea City, who lost to Portsmouth a few hours ago. If Cardiff can beat QPR, they’ll be the first to do so in the league this season.
Cardiff are in the middle of another illness epidemic (is it the drains or the Swansea supporters or what???) although it looks as though they should all be able to play.
Craig Bellamy is likely to start while Darcy Blake, Adam Matthews and Jason Koumas will all hope to start after recent good performances. Aaron Wildig is more likely to be on the bench.
Craig, who says he’s close to full fitness (you mean you can get even better???) joined Adam and Jonathan Meades (now back from his loan spell at FK Moss) at the opening of Cardiff’s House of Sport.

Reading v Leeds United
Reading are turning into the Championship’s answer to whatever team Mark Hughes happens to be managing. They’ve drawn seven times this season, including all their last three matches.
Simon Church will hope to keep his place in Reading’s starting line-up. Hal Robson-Kanu is more likely to be on the bench.
Sanchez Watt could finally be ready to return from an ankle injury for Leeds – BBC Sport says Leeds have only two absentees and Sanchez isn’t one of them.

Scunthorpe United v Coventry City
Coventry aren’t on the best run at the moment but at least they’ve won an away win recently. Scunthorpe haven’t won at home since August and that was only against Crystal Palace. They have also beaten Sheffield Wednesday at home in the Carling Cup but that’s not nearly as impressive as it sounds.
Freddy Eastwood will hope to be back in Coventry’s starting line-up.

Welsh Player News 29th October (Championship, Part 1)

Cardiff City have won all their matches featuring Craig Bellamy this season, a record which he hopes will continue against his former club Norwich City.

Cardiff City defender Kevin McNaughton admits it won’t be easy to hold onto his right back spot with Adam Matthews around.

Cardiff City’s Jonathan Meades is in the middle of a relegation battle on loan at FK Moss. The Norwegian season ends in November. He was harshly sent off for two booksable offences on his debut but was still named Man of the Match.

Nathaniel Jarvis is back at Cardiff City after Southend United decided not to extend his loan spell. Nathaniel was at Southend for seven matches and came off the bench in all of them. He didn’t actually score which is something a lot of people hold against you if you’re a striker but he can’t have been too bad if they kept bringing him off the bench. And it looks as though manager Paul Sturrock did consider keeping him for longer, it wasn’t just ‘no, you’re crap, piss off’.

Andy Dorman believes Crystal Palace will get out of trouble.

Robbie Savage would rather buy Gareth Bale than Wayne Rooney. See, I told you it wasn’t just me. Robbie shouldn’t make fun of Gareth’s ears though.

Actually, Robbie would probably rather buy himself than Wayne Rooney. (Me too. You know why.) And if Robbie’s right, I want Rhyl to get really rich and buy loads of players.

Robbie is hilariously unimpressed with most of Manchester United’s players and he isn’t a Wagner fan either. I can’t blame him, that Ring Cycle gives me a headache.*

Gareth Roberts will fight to win back his place in Derby County’s starting line-up.

Ipswich Town manager Roy Keane thought Troy Brown did well against Watford but he was dropped to the bench for the following game. Troy has just been called up to the Wales under-21 squad for the first time for the match against Austria in Newport..

Andy King believes new manager Sven-Goran Eriksson will help Leicester City up the table.

*(I know who he means really.)

Welsh Summer Transfers 2010 (Championship, B-D)

Barnsley
Welsh Players: None

Bristol City
Gavin Williams was rumoured to be leaving Bristol City after not being a regular in the starting line-up. He didn’t go anywhere and he’s still not a regular in the team.
The Daily Mail ran a story about Michael Owen signing on loan but I never really believed that one.
Bristol City signed Brett Pitman from Bournemouth on a three-year contract after the striker turned down the chance to join Premier League Blackpool.
Sam Vokes signed on loan from Wolverhampton on a five-month loan
Welsh Players: Five and a half - Lewin Nyatanga, Christian Ribeiro, James Wilson, Gavin Williams, Sam Vokes and Brett Pitman (who might choose to represent a different country)

Burnley
Welsh Players: None

Cardiff City
Joe Ledley spent months dithering over his new contract because he wanted to play in the Premier League. When Cardiff lost the play-off final, he was expected to join clubs including Everton, Stoke City, Sunderland, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Celtic, Rangers, Roma, Panathanaikos, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce but only one club could have him and the lucky team was Celtic. Joe signed a four-year deal.
When Craig Bellamy said he was interested in signing for hometown club Cardiff City, no-one took him too seriously. They all say that and how could Cardiff possibly afford him? Well they can’t afford either him or his wages but Man City are paying most of his wages while he plays for Cardiff on a season-long loan. Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic were all disappointed to miss out.
Aaron Morris was released by Cardiff City and had a trial at Exeter City before signing for Aldershot Town.
Jonathan Meades signed his first professional contract, then joined Norway’s FK Moss on a short-term loan.
Welsh Players: Four and two halves - Darcy Blake, Adam Matthews, Jason Koumas, Craig Bellamy and Aaron Wildig (who wants to play for Wales but currently isn't eligble), Jonathan Meades (out on loan but wouldn't have much involvement in the first team if he was here).

Coventry City
Welsh Players: One - Freddy Eastwood

Crystal Palace

Andy Dorman wanted to play in the English league system as he hoped this would increase his chances of playing for Wales. So St Mirren had no choice but to let him go when his contract came to an end. Several clubs showed an interest, Andy signed for Crystal Palace on a three-year deal… and was left out of the very next Wales squad. He’s back in now though.
Lewis Price was released by Derby County following a season-long loan to Brentford where he often didn’t even make the bench. He is now at Crystal Palace on a three-year contract following a successful trial.
Welsh Players: Two - Lewis Price, Andy Dorman

Derby County
Lewis Price spent last season at Brentford but they had too many loanees and Lewis often found himself out of the squad. He was released by Derby on his return but now he’s at Crystal Palace.
Gareth Roberts signed for Derby from Doncaster Rovers on a two-year deal.
Derby wanted to sign Ben Davies from Notts County. He said he’d love to play in the Championship but he didn’t want to leave Bournemouth just now.
Welsh Players: Two - Gareth Roberts, Robbie Savage

Doncaster Rovers
Brian Stock attracted the attention of Southampton and Swansea City but he stayed at Doncaster.
John Oster signed a new two-year contract.
Gareth Roberts left Doncaster when his contract expired n 1st July and signed for Derby County.
Welsh Players: Two - John Oster, Brian Stock

Welsh Player News 24th August

Gareth Bale says Tottenham are confident of beating Young Boys, while Harry Redknapp takes the credit for Gareth’s new haircut. Oh and his goals too.

Dave Edwards could play for Wolverhampton Wanderers in their Carling Cup clash against Southend United after recovering from a groin injury.

I’ve found a new Welshman! Well I might have done. Former Bournemouth star Brett Pitman, who recently turned down Premier League side Blackpool to play in the Championship with Bristol City, could be eligible to represent Wales. Brett was born in Jersey and is apparently allowed to represent any Home Nations side. It’s a bit of a funny rule and let’s see how he does with struggling Bristol City but with Simon Church (Reading) and Ched Evans (Sheffield United) not regulars for their clubs, Craig Bellamy’s dodgy knees and Bristol City loanee Sam Vokes maybe kept out of the starting line-up by Brett, Wales could be left with Millwall’s Steve Morison and Rob Earnshaw, both great players who have done well for Wales but they’re not enough on their own!
Guess who is so tempted to go through Wikipedia looking for footballers born in Jersey!

Jason Koumas is set to make his first start for Cardiff City after gaining match fitness. Carling Cup opponents Peterborough United probably think Jason should give it a few more days before playing.

Rob Earnshaw says Cardiff City are the team to beat after they signed players including Wales team-mates Jason Koumas and Craig Bellamy. But he doesn’t necessarily think Cardiff are now the top side in the Championship. As for Nottingham Forest, once they start winning again there will be no stopping them.

Cardiff City’s Jonathan Meades has gone to Norway to play for FK Moss on loan.

Robbie Savage thinks victory over league leaders Queen’s Park Rangers will be the perfect way to get Derby County’s season going.

Swansea City’s Kerry Morgan is back at Newport County on loan again after helping them into the Blue Square Premier last season. He could have gone to a League side but he wanted to go to Newport. Surprisingly, only four of his new team-matres seem to be Welsh – Glyn Garner, Chris Todd, Andrew Hughes and Kieron Blackburn, who is on loan at Merthyr Town, formerly Merthyr Tydfil.

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler won’t be making a move for Grant Basey. I’m sure Aberdeen will be very glad to hear it.

Pre-season Friendlies (Part Six)

Portimonense 3 - 0 Cardiff City
Poor Cardiff but they actually didn’t play that badly. They were just a bit short of players. Adam Matthews came on as a aubstitute but Jonathan Meades was left on the bench because he ‘s too young to play against this sort of opposition (he’ll be just thrilled when he finds that out). Aaron Wildig stayed in Cardiff due to a knee injury.

Portsmouth 1-2 West Ham United
Portsmouth lost to West Ham United but they didn’t especially look like a Championship side playing a Premier League side so who knows, maybe Portsmouth will be back in the Premier League before long. I hope not though. I want Cardiff City and Millwall to go up with either Hull City or Middlesbrough. That won’t happen though.
Arron Davies did well for new club Peterborough. Jack Collison wouldn’t have played for West Ham as he’s recovering from a knee operation but Danny Gabbidon might have played. I tried to find out but I couldn't.

San Jose Earthquakes 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur
Gareth Bale was arguably Tottenham’s most dangerous player but they still drew with San José which is quite funny if you’re an Arsenal supporter. Gareth hurt his ankle but he says it’s just bruising.

SC Olhanense 1-2 Nottingham Forest
Robert Earnshaw scored the opening goal for Nottngham Forest. Rob played the first 45 minutes with Chris Gunter coming on after half-time.

Southport 0-3 Blackburn Rovers
Jason Brown played the second half in goal as Blackburn beat Southport.

AFC Telford 3-0 Prescot Cables
Will Richards played well for AFC Telford and the Shropshire Star correctly predicted that he’d be offered a contract following the game.

Championship Play-off Final Result 22nd May

Blackpool 3-2 Cardiff City
Congratulations to Blackpool, who beat favourites Cardiff City to win a place in the Premier League next season. It’s an incredible achievement for a club with such a small budget – especially one who was one of the favourites to get relegated. (I imagine they’ll be the favourites to get relegated next year but the favourites don’t always go down. Blackpool have already proved that.
Ian Holloway is most famous for his brilliant one-liners (although maybe that’s the wrong word, some of his jokes are a whole paragraph) but he’s also shown this season that he’s a great manager. He’s not only got a team who keep winning (especially against Nottingham Forest), they play attractive attacking football. Olly has also had a great impact psychologically. The Blackpool players don’t care if they go a goal down, they just keep fighting. Not to mention their wonderful team spirit.
I’m looking forward to seeing them next season. I’m sure they’ll spring a few shocks, and both the team and their manager will really brighten up Match of the Day – which is already brilliant, it’s my favourite programme.
David Vaughan was the only player to feature for the winning side and would probably have scored without a Cardiff handball. Rob Edwards was on the bench with Neal Eardley and Daniel Nardiello not in the squad. David was one of Blackpool’s best players and came very close to scoring for them.
Joe Ledley played the full match for Cardiff and scored the goal which put Cardiff 2-1 ahead. Unfortunately, this is expected to be his last game for Cardiff. He (understandably) wants Premier League football but he’s done well for the club all season and didn’t stop trying until the final whistle.
Darcy Blake also got the ball in the net for Cardiff but it was ruled out for offside. He had one bad moment (what footballer doesn’t have those?) which led to one of Blackpool’s goals but otherwise he played well and was a big attacking threat for Cardiff. Aaron Wildig was on the bench but there was no sign of Adam Matthews. Aaron Morris and Jonathan Meades weren’t there either.

Championship Results 2nd May Part 1

Blackpool 1-1 Bristol City
A point for Blackpool was enough to ensure they ended the season in sixth place – and in the play-offs. They’ll face Nottingham Forest in the play-off semi-finals. It’s a great result for Blackpool but the ever-amusing Ian Hollway says he was promised a bonus if he could keep Blackpool in the Championship. But if they continue their good form in the play-offs, he might not be able to keep them in the Championship. I really want Cardiff to go up but I’ve really enjoyed Blackpool this season and it would be great to see Ian Holloway on Match of the Day every week.
Bristol City finish in 10th place. It’s a disappointing end to the season for a club who were challenging for the play-offs at the start of the season but considering they also spent some time challenging for relegation, maybe 10th is a relief in some ways.
David Vaughan was very lively for Blackpool and Bristol Evening Post credits him with bringing the crowd back to life, so maybe he should go to medical school once he’d finished playing football.
Rob Edwards remained on the bench and Neal Eardley was out of the squad again, perhaps with a recurrence of his hamstring injury.
Lewin Nyatanga played for Bristol City again but Christian Ribeiro was out of the squad.

Coventry City 0-4 Watford
Coventry’s season ended disappointingly as the former play-off contenders were thrashed 4-0 by Watford, who aren’t exactly known for their good away form. Manager Chris Coleman was sacked a few days later. Coventry finish in 19th although they’re only three points away from 13th-place Queen’s Park Rangers.
Watford sealed their survival last week but they finished their season in style, which puts them ahead of Coventry – and the other two teams with 54 points – on goal difference.
Freddy Eastwood played 71 minutes for Coventry but couldn’t get them a goal although they were only 2-0 down when he left the field so maybe he’d been busy defending.

Derby County 2-0 Cardiff City
Derby finished their season with a win that took them to 14th place. The season might not have been everything they’d hoped for but it wasn’t completely without its positives. A few new players next season might make a big difference.
They might not have won though if Cardiff hadn’t chosen to rest all their best players. It’s a gamble that might pay off with the players all fresh and rested for the play-offs but it does mean they aren’t really going into the matches on a run of good form. They finished fourth though and it’s great to see them in the play-offs after so nearly making it last year.
Aaron Wildig was the only (almost) Welshman to start for Cardiff. He struggled to deal with Robbie Savage but perhaps not as much as the local radio stations have recently (yay Robbie!). Adam Matthews came off the bench after 63 minutes. Joe Ledley was also on the bench with youngsters Aaron Morris and Jonathan Meades.

Championship Fixtures 2nd May Part 2

Derby County v Cardiff City
Derby manager Nigel Clough wants his team to finish the season on a high note but they face an in-form Cardiff, who could finish in 3rd if they win and Nottingham Forest lose (or draw, if Cardiff win by enough goals to overcome Forest’s superior goal difference.
Robbie Savage played for Derby’s reserves in midweek, in an effort to help them win their league. So he might be too tired to face Cardiff although I have trouble imagining a tired Robbie Savage. Robbie has been named Derby’s Player of the Year. Robbie may also be going goal again over the summer, facing penalties from children in a charity event for former Derby star Nigel Callaghan, who is undergoing chemotherapy.
Joe Ledley should be playing in this match – but, play-offs aside, it could be his last for Cardiff. Joe says he will stay with Cardiff if they get promoted but the implication is if they don’t, he won’t. There is some talk of Cardiff’s new investors selling Joe but that would be difficult as he’s out of contract.
Darcy Blake – another whose contract is coming to an end - was substituted in Cardiff’s last match after suffering a head injury but there’s nothing to suggest he’s not fine now. Cardiff captain Mark Hudson is an option to replace Darcy but he feels Darcy deserves to stay in the team. Aaron Wildig could get a start if manager Dave Jones opts to rest players. Adam Matthews is another who could play.
If some players are rested, Aaron Morris (who is also out of contract) and Jonathan Meades could be among the ‘young players’ on the bench.

Ipswich Town v Sheffield United
If Ipswich win by enough goals and Doncaster Rovers lose by enough, Ipswich could finish in the top half of the table. But it’s not very likely and maybe most fans will just be glad they’re not adrift at the bottom of the table anymore. Sheffield United have a chance of finishing 8th.
Again, Roy Keane has said some of Ipswich’s young players will be involved but Troy Brown was left out last week and the same could happen again. Troy has however been given a one-year contract extension so maybe he’ll get his chance next season.
Ched Evans might get his first start since returning from a collarbone injury. He says his collarbone is still a bit sore but otherwise he’s in good shape and he’d love to end the Blades’ disappointing season with a win.

Leicester City v Middlesbrough

Leicester are already in the play-offs but even if they win they’re unlikely to catch Cardiff City on goal difference. Of the three teams that were relegated from the Premier League last season, Boro are the only team who aren’t going back up.
Andy King is almost certain to start for Leicester again, probably with Nicky Adams on the bench. Andy is one of Leicester’s two Players’ Players of the Year was shortlisted for the Championship Player of the Season award but it went to Newcastle United’s Kevin Nolan instead. If he plays, this match will be Andy’s 100th appearance for Leicester. Not bad for a twenty-one year old.
Rhys Williams won’t play as he has a pelvis injury and really wants to be fit enough to play for Australia in the World Cup. He’s being assessed this week. Danny Coyne will be on the bench.

Wales v Northern Ireland (under-19 friendly)

I meant to post the squad ages ago but I'm useless so I didn't. The match was played on Wednesday but the result isn't on the FA Wales site yet. So I don't know what the result was but I'm sure Wales won ;)

WALES v NORTHERN IRELAND

Championship Fixtures 17th April Part 2

Ipswich Town v Doncaster Rovers
Roy Keane has done well at Ipswich, finally. Instead of getting relegated, they could finish in the top half of the table. So could Doncaster who are currently twelfth – which in some ways is even more incredible. I bet the Doncaster fans never thought they’d be finishing the season feeling disappointed they didn’t make the play-offs.
The exciting news is that Brian Stock is the latest Welsh player to recover from his back problem and might play a part – which now means there are no Welsh bad backs in the whole of the Football League. Hamstrings injuries are all the rage this week. As usual I’m a bit behind the times – I have a back injury.
Brian is unlikely to start but he could be in the squad. Gareth Roberts and John Oster will probably get into the starting line-up.

Leicester City v Watford
Leicester will still be in the play-off places at the end of the weekend whatever happens – but a win could guarantee them a place in the top six. Watford are still in trouble, just three points from the relegation places although they do still have a game in hand.
Andy King should keep his place in the starting line-up. Nicky Adams is hoping he’ll get a chance before the season comes to an end – I hope so too, Nicky. Anyone who can completely transform Leyton Orient single-footedly (no disrespect intended to Nicky’s weaker foot) would be a big help in even a Championship play-off push.
Watford’s Jonathan North is out of contract this summer and hasn’t been offered a new one yet but that doesn’t mean he won’t be.

Queen’s Park Rangers v Cardiff City

QPR could be safe from relegation after this week – but only if they win and that’s going to be a big ask. Cardiff have been on great form lately and a win will ensure they don’t get another nasty shock like Preston North End gave them last season.
Joe Ledley has had a hamstring injury (yes, I told you they were everywhere) but he is expected to be able to play. He’s looked great since his return from injury – it just shows how much he really needed those hip operations. Everton are apparently the favourites to sign Joe with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City also interested but I hope Cardiff can hang onto him.
Darcy Blake is the most likely to start of the younger Welsh players but Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig have also done well when called upon.
Jonathan Meades has signed his first professional contract with Cardiff City. If he can do half as well as another left back from Whitchurch, he has a very bright future. Jonathan has been on the bench for Cardiff three times this season (but only if I counted right).
Aaron Morris is out of contract this summer – I don’t know if he’s likely to get a contract but he has been on the bench a few times this season and might even have played if he hadn’t been on loan during the injury crisis.

Championship Fixtures 13th March Part 1

Coventry City v Plymouth Argyle
Coventry continue their push for the play-offs but Plymouth only have one thing on their minds. Staying up. Freddy Eastwood has been on the bench since returning from injury and with Coventry doing so well, he probably doesn’t have a huge chance of getting back into the starting line-up. Carl Fletcher should play for Plymouth though and it could be his turn to play in central defence again.

Doncaster Rovers v Derby County
A win for Doncaster would put them within touching distance of the play-offs while Derby remain in trouble. Brian Stock is still out with a back injury but he is progressing well. Gareth Roberts and John Oster should start for Doncaster.
Robbie Savage is set to start in midfield, rather than in goal, as Derby have managed to sign a keeper on loan. He has a tough act to follow. Derby do, of course, have a brilliant Welsh goalkeeper called Lewis Price who is on loan at Brentford but they're not allowed to recall him.

Leicester City v Cardiff City
Defeat for Cardiff could see them drop out of the play-off zone but they’ll be more interested in winning and overtaking Leicester. Andy King will probably start for Leicester with Nicky Adams on the bench.
Cardiff’s injury problems continue and it’s a good job I’m only concerned with the Welsh ones or this really would be a long preview. Joe Ledley is out after having operations on his hips but is hoping to return next month. Darcy Blake and Adam Matthews started in the defeat to Ipswich and although that wasn’t exactly Cardiff’s result of the season, there aren’t many other options.
If Aaron Wildig has recovered from his various niggles, he could be in contention for a place in central midfield. Jonathan Meades seems too young at 18 but he’s actually a month older than Aaron and only two months younger than Adam.

Championship Results 9th March Part 1

Crystal Palace 0-1 Bristol City
Crystal Palace remain in big trouble while Bristol City crept a little further away from League One. Lewin Nyatanga was in defence for Bristol City with Gavin Williams on the bench.

Ipswich Town 2-0 Cardiff City

A shock win for draw specialists Ipswich moved them further from the relegation zone whilst denting Cardiff’s play-off hopes. Darcy Blake and Adam Matthews both started for Cardiff. Aaron Wildig and Jonathan Meades were on the bench. It’s really sad but Cardiff do have major injury problems, not to mention financial problems. They are doing well in horrible circumstances.

Peterborough United 1-0 Sheffield United
Craig Morgan helped Peterborough to a clean sheet, not to mention three points over a team with a good chance of making the play-offs. Ched Evans got a rare start for Sheffield United but left the field with a suspected broken collarbone after just eight minutes. Scans confirmed it wasn’t a break so he won’t be missing for the rest of the season, as feared.

Championship Fixtures 9th March Part 1

Crystal Palace v Bristol City
Crystal Palace so far don’t seem to be missing Neil Warnock since he pissed off to Queen’s Park Rangers. Tonight’s match could well be the time they come crashing back down to earth. Or maybe not. Bristol City have apparently not beaten a team in the bottom half this season.
But do Crystal Palace count as a bottom-half team? If Bristol City can somehow convince themselves that Palace are 11th, they should be fine.
Lewin Nyatanga was in Bristol City’s starting eleven at the weekend with Gavin Williams and James Wilson on the bench. The Mirror named Lewin as the Villain of the Match but we all know we can’t pay too much attention to what the Mirror says.

Ipswich Town v Cardiff City

Cardiff play three away games in the next eight days and on paper, this is the easy one. Ipswich are very good at getting draws though. Probably the best in the whole of the Football League.
Darcy Blake has given up fast food in an effort to keep himself as fit as possible for his team. Now that’s dedication. I don’t think I could bear to give up fast food – although Darcy probably wouldn’t fit into my Size 6 dress. All the same, I think he probably deserves a start. He was brilliant at the weekend. Google him if you don’t believe me. He wasn’t even supposed to start but Aaron Wildig had a slight thigh strain. Aaron might not be fit to start this match either.
Adam Matthews also started on Saturday and he could keep his place. But he might not keep his place next season as Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham are all scrapping over him. Jonathan Meades probably isn’t ready to come off the bench yet but it’s great just to see him on it. Joe Ledley is still out with hip injuries.

Peterborough United v Sheffield United
Sheffield United will be hoping to bounce back from their weekend defeat to Coventry. Probably the only thing Peterborough are interested in bouncing back from is their impending relegation but I’m sure central defender Craig Morgan will still go for the win. He’s even started scoring now so watch out for Craig.
Ched Evans has just got to score a goal for Sheffield United soon. If he doesn’t, maybe someone should exorcise him.

Championship Results 6th March Part 2

Cardiff City 1-0 Middlesbrough
Cardiff’s win kept them in the play-off hunt but Middlesbrough continue to stutter. Darcy Blake was a late addition to the starting line-up but he did well. It was Darcy’s good work that eventually led to the goal and he was unlucky not to double their lead late on. Adam Matthews also started and completed the game.
Aaron Wildig and Jonathan Meades were both on the bench.
Danny Coyne was in goal for Middlesbrough and although he did let a goal in, he was arguably offside. Rhys Williams seems to have returned to the Middlesbrough squad. BBC Sport did say ther was a Williams on the bench but he was apparently No. 15. Rhys wears 25 and Luke Williams wears 35. But the Middlesbrough official site says Rhys came off the bench and I trust them to recognise their own players.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Sheffield United
So, Queen’s Park Rangers have stolen Crystal Palace’s manager whilst Palace have picked one recently discarded by QPR. Although to be fair, QPR have discarded so many managers lately, it’s probably not easy to find one who hasn’t been discarded by QPR.
Paul Hart started his latest managerial reign with a win over Sheffield United, who remain play-off contenders but have just lost their sixth consecutive away match. Ched Evans came off Sheffield United’s bench after 72 minutes. He did try to shoot but one of his team-mates got in his way.

Derby County 2-0 Watford
Derby got another home win that takes them five points from the relegation zone and leaves Watford just two points away from where they don’t want to be. Robbie Savage played the full match for Derby.

FA Cup Fixtures 13th February Part 1

Chelsea v Cardiff City
Chelsea will play a weakened side – but so will Cardiff. With their injury list, they have little choice. Joe Ledley of course is out with a hip injury. He says both operations went well and he’s hoping to play again as early as April but he definitely won’t be able to play tomorrow.
Darcy Blake was substituted early in their last match with a back injury but he should be fit to play. And even if he’s not fit, he might play anyway, Cardiff are that desperate. Aaron Wildig, Adam Matthews and Jonathan Meades are in the provisional squad but Cardiff manager Dave Jones that he won’t have to add any more teenagers, despite rumours that Zak Evans could be travelling to London with them.
Vital Cardiff are considering getting one Chelsea goalkeeper sent off before injuring his replacement. Not that I’m in any way condoning this not exactly serious suggestion but if it happens, not only could Cardiff win, it could also mean Rhys Taylor gets a place on Chelsea’s squad for their next game.

Derby County v Birmingham City
Derby will be feeling extra confident after despatching Newcastle United 3-0 in their last match. Birmingham on the other hand have just lost to West Ham. So are we about to witness another giant-killing? Robbie Savage believes it could happen. He also believes he deserves a good reception from the Birmingham fans but I doubt he’ll find many people to agree with him. (I agree with him but I won’t be there.)
