Queen’s Park Rangers 0-0 Millwall
QPR dropped points at home for the first time this season as Millwall gained an excellent away home at the home of the league leaders. QPR dominated but Millwall goalkeeper David Forde was in fine form.
Steve Morison played alone up front for Millwall which is not his favourite position but he still caused QPR all sorts of trouble. Unfortunately when he was through on goal, he forgot to take the ball with him but maybe he’ll remember next time.
Reading 1-0 Ipswich Town
Ipswich slipped out of the top six after losing their first away game of the season.
Hal Robson-Kanu got his first league start of the season after some impressive performances from the bench. Simon Church was the player to be dropped at once but he got his own taste of supersubdom when Hal injured himself. Simon came off the bench to replace him and scored a goal two minutes later or twenty seconds later, according to the Daily Mail - later with his first touch. Jake Taylor was on the bench.
Troy Brown played the full match in defence for Ipswich.
Watford 2-3 Swansea City
Swansea got their first away points off the season but not before Watford gavethem a bit of a scare by fighting back from 2-0 down.
Ashley Williams played in midfield for Swansea and was joined in the starting line-up by Neil Taylor and Joe Allen. Joe had a particularly good game, claiming the assist for Swansea’s second goal with a fine pass. It was hoped that David Cotterill would return from a groin injury but he didn’t.

Championship Results 28th September 2010 Part 2
Leeds United 4-6 Preston North End
Preston probably know how Leeds feel. They were 3-1 up against Burnley and lost 4-3. But that didn’t stop Preston from fighting back from 4-1 down to win 4-6. An incredible scoreline and in some ways not a great one, considering what it says about Preston’s defence. But I bet it was an amazing match. If you don’t love Leeds.
Sanchez Watt made a 73rd appearance from the bench when Leeds were just 5-4 behind but he was unable to find an equaliser. Perhaps bringing goalkeeper Jason Brown off the bench would have helped them more because the goalkeeper they had wasn’t exactly playing a blinder.
Injuries gave Craig Morgan the chance to get back into Preston’s starting line-up. Things didn’t go that well to begin with but he tightened things up after Leeds’ fourth goal. Paul Parry stayed on the bench.
Norwich City 4-3 Leicester City
Norwich must have been glad when substitute Matty Fryatt was sent off. The player was on a hat-trick as the away side fought back from 3-1 and then 4-2 down. With him off the pitch, the fightback stopped.
Leicester opened the scoring in the 2nd minute but a goal from Andrew Crofts put Norwich back on level terms before the home side went 3-1 ahead.
Andy King played the full match for Leicester. He was originally credited with the assist for Leicester’s second goal but then BBC Sport changed their minds.
Nottingham Forest 1-1 Sheffield United
Nottingham Forest have lost just once in their last 26 home games but a number of them have been draws – this being their sixth of the season.
Chris Gunter played in defence for Forest but Robert Earnshaw’s hamstring injury prevented him from playing any part in the game.
Ched Evans was on the bench for Sheffield United. They brought him on in the 67th minute in a bid to double their lead but a minute later Forest equalised.
Portsmouth 3-1 Bristol City
Portsmouth are out of the bottom three after winning two consecutive games – their only wins so far this season. Bristol City sit between Crystal Palace and Leicester City which historically wasn’t a bad place to be but it’s not so good when you’re 23rd.
Christian Ribeiro played as a wing back for Bristol City. Brett Pitman made a late appearance from the bench.

Championship Results 28th September 2010 Part 1
Cardiff City 0-0 Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace earned their first away point of the season when Cardiff, lacking firepower, failed to score against them.
Cardiff’s Darcy Blake recovered from the knock that forced him off against Millwall while Jason Koumas played ninety minutes for only the second time this season. Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig were unused substitutes. Craig Bellamy was out with a knee injury.
Andy Dorman was on the bench again for Palace but an early injury meant he joined the action in the 19th minute and an headed attempt on goal forced the goalkeeper into a save. Lewis Price was an unused substitute.
Coventry City 2-1 Doncaster Rovers
Coventry bounced back from a defeat to Preston North End with victory over Doncaster.
Coventry were without striker Freddy Eastwood, who is recovering from a knee operation.
John Oster started for Doncaster and it was his great pass that led to Doncaster’s 43rd-minute equaliser. Brian Stock was on the bench again but he got a ten-minute run-out at the end of the match and his powerful volley should ensure he starts next week – if his back problems allow him to.
Derby County 3-1 Middlesbrough
Former title favourites Middlesbrough slipped to defeat again, this time at the hands of Derby, who had already beaten Crystal Palace this week. It was after a match against Derby that Gareth Southgate was sacked last season – but Boro actually won that match.
Robbie Savage started again for Derby and came close to scoring but Boro goalkeeper Jason Steele saved his free kick. Robbie had a good game though and was the driving force behind Derby’s win. The Northern Echo even described him as ‘evergreen’ – an adjective usually reserved for Ryan Giggs.
Danny Coyne was on the bench for Middlesbrough.

Wales v Bulgaria/Switzerland v Wales News 29th September 2010
Brian Flynn will announce his squad to face Bulgaria and Switzerland on Friday 1st October.
Doubts
Robert Earnshaw (hamstring) is a doubt for Wales’ next two matches. Sam Vokes, currently on loan at Bristol City from Wolverhampton Wandererers, has a hamstring injury and is yet to return to Bristol City’s squad.
It has been speculated that Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp doesn’t want Gareth Bale to play in the qualifiers as he needs a rest but this is just speculation.
Out
Craig Bellamy has been ruled out of Wales’ Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
Jack Collison (knee) and Aaron Ramsey (leg) will definitely be missing.
Possible Call-ups
Tony Pulis believes Danny Collins will be called back into the Wales squad now Brian Flynn has taken over from John Toshack. Danny has done very well the last few seasons and thoroughly deserves a call-up and he’s even said he’s like to play for Wales again but he’s one of quite a few players to have had issues with Tosh.
Brian spoke to Danny when he visited Stoke’s training ground and asked if he’d retired from international football. Danny said he hasn’t.
Robbie Savage has declared himself available for international games again following Tosh’s ‘resignation’. However the midfielder, who also presents radio show 606, will be 36 next month.
Simon Davies announced his retirement from international football. However, it is thought that he has since been in touch with Brian Flynn, who has recently watched him playing for Fulham.
Vital Reading say that Hal Robson-Kanu has been called up to the full Wales squad. It would be a deserved call-up after Hal’s excellent form for Reading and the Wales under-21s but to my knowledge the squad hasn’t been announced yet.
It is thought that Jason Koumas could also return to international football but the Wigan Athletic player, now on loan at Cardiff City, says he is currently focused only on building up his match fitness.
Darcy Blake is hoping to be called up to the full Wales squad again after having to withdraw from the previous squad. His excellent form for Cardiff suggests this is a real possibility. Wales have few central defensive options, as well as being light in midfield, and Darcy can play both roles.

Champions' League Fixtures 29th September 2010
Tottenham Hotspur v FC Twente
Tottenham take on FC Twente in their first ever Champions’ League season. Arsenal faced them either last season or the year before and they didn’t have too much trouble with them but Tottenham aren’t as good as Arsenal and FC Twente have gone from being a team in their first ever Champions’ League season to being the Dutch League Champions. I hope nothing like that happens to Tottenham.
Gareth Bale really needs another rest before he plays for Wales but Tottenham have injury problems and I think they’ll need him to play.
Valencia v Manchester United
Manchester United will really want to beat Valencia after their shock draw with Rangers They’ll have to do it without Wayne Rooney but with Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov in such great form, I’m not sure I’d put Rooney in the starting line-up anyway.
Michael is expected to start but Man Utd could play with just one striker, in which case it probably won’t be him. Ryan Giggs is out after suffering a hamstring injury last weekend. Owen Hargreaves could be back soon but not as soon as this evening.

League One Fixtures 28th September 2010 Part 3
Sheffield Wednesday v Oldham Athletic
Two former table toppers this season face off in an attempt to get back in the promotion race.
Joe Jacobson will be on the bench for Oldham.
Swindon Town v Plymouth Argyle
Swindon are gradually getting back to where they were at the end of last season. Plymouth’s recent form has also improved, their most recent victory being over League One giants Sheffield Wednesday.
Billy Bodin will hope to be on the bench again for Swindon.
Carl Fletcher will play in midfield for Plymouth.
Yeovil Town v Southampton
Yeovil have managed to haul themselves out of the bottom three but they now face ‘promotion favourites’ Southampton, who are a point ahead of them.
Loanees Shaun MacDonald, Owain Tudur Jones and Gavin Williams will all hope to start for Yeovil.
Ryan Doble could be on the bench again for Southampton.

League One Fixtures 28th September 2010 Part 2
Colchester United v Dagenham & Redbridge
Colchester hope to continue their good start to the season against a Dag & Red side who have only one once this season – and it wasn’t an away match.
Lloyd James should be in Colchester’s squad but Lee Beevers won’t be ready to return from his embarrassing pram injury.
Tony Roberts will be in goal for Dag & Red.
Hartlepool United v Carlisle United
Hartlepool have picked up slightly after a worrying start to the season but promotion contenders Carlisle might prove too much for them.
Jason Price still hasn’t started a match for new club Carlisle.
Leyton Orient v Walsall
Both sides are struggling the moment with Walsall in the bottom four and Orient a point ahead of them. A win for either team could be one of those six-pointers where you only get three points.
Sean Geddes will probably be on the bench for Walsall.
Peterborough United v Notts County
Peterborough will be keen to reclaim their spot at the top of the League One table and as Notts County have only one point from their away fixtures, Peterborough will fancy their chances.
Arron Davies could be back in Peterborough’s starting line-up after a surprisingly early return from a hamstring injury.
Notts County fans will be hoping Ben Davies can get some more goals and assists to help them to a first away win.
Rochdale v Huddersfield Town
It’s early days but maybe Rochdale won’t stay around long enough for League One to be christened the new Rochdale division. And I’m not necessarily talking about relegation. Huddersfield, who were top not that long ago, will provide them with a stern test.
Matt Done will be hoping for his first substitute appearance for Rochdale for six matches.

League One Fixtures 28th September 2010 Part 1
These matches have already started so no time to google the players... I did google them yesterday though.
Bournemouth v Exeter City
Bournemouth aim to consider a strong start to the season with victory over Exeter City, who haven’t been doing too badly themselves – they’re out of the top six on goal difference.
Rhoys Wiggins should start in defence for Bournemouth. Joe Partington could be on the bench.
Daniel Nardiello will be hoping for a recall to Exeter’s starting line-up but they might stick with the side which beat Yeovil Town at the weekend, in which Richard Duffy was the only Welsh representative. Rob Edwards will probably be on the bench.
Brighton & Hove Albion v Brentford
With Brentford short on points, particularly away points, the last team they want to play is the one on top of the table. But that’s exactly what they have to do.
Nicky Adams should keep his place in midfield for Brentford.
Bristol Rovers v Tranmere Rovers
Bristol Rovers are climbing up the table and in theory a home match against the bottom club should help them to climb still further. But football is football, Bristol Rovers are Bristol Rovers – and Tranmere probably aren’t the worst side in League One.
Byron Anthony should keep his place in defence for Bristol Rovers. Eliot Richards will be hoping for another run-out but Ben Swallow still awaits his first league appearance of the season.
Ash Taylor is still out with a knee injury and won’t play for Tranmere.
Charlton Athletic v Milton Keynes Dons
These two teams might be technically mid-table but despite dropping points recently, they are still within three points of the play-off places.
Jermaine Easter is still looking for his first league goal for MK Dons.
Bournemouth v Exeter City

Championship Fixtures 28th September 2010 Part 3
Queen’s Park Rangers v Millwall
Both teams started the season as the Championships’s pace-setters but while QPR are six points clear at the top of the table, unbeaten in the league and with a 100% record at home, Millwall have dropped to 12th and are without a win in their last five matches. Millwall haven’t beaten QPR since 1989, when both clubs were in the top division.
Millwall manager Kenny Jackett has previously worked as QPR’s assistant manager.
Steve Morison should start up front for Millwall.
Reading v Ipswich Town
Reading are only a point outside the play-offs but they now face Ipswich Town, who are in fourth place and unbeaten away this season.
Hal Robson-Kanu came off the bench to score his second of the season for Reading (or his third if you include the penalty in the shoot-out against giant-killers Northampton). While this might not sound like much, he has only been on the pitch twice. It would be great to see him start for Reading, alongside Simon Church, who is expected to keep his place in the starting line-up. Jake Taylor could also be in the squad.
Troy Brown might be on the bench for Ipswich.
Watford v Swansea City
Watford are up in third place after three consecutive league victories. Swansea might not be feeling overly positive – while they do have a 100% record at home, they have a 0% record away.
David Cotterill is a doubt for Swansea due to a groin injury but Ashley Williams, Neil Taylor and Joe Allen all look likely to start. Jazz Richards could be on the bench.

Championship Fixtures 28th September 2010 Part 2
Leeds United v Preston North End
Preston remain in the bottom three after finally managing their second win of the season against Coventry City. Leeds will need to win to be sure of staying in the play-off places –with ten places in with a chance of catching them, a draw probably won’t be enough.
Jason Brown and Sanchez Watt will probably be on the bench for Leeds. It would be nice if they weren’t though.
Craig Morgan has spent the last few matches on the bench but the injured player he replaced in the 36th minute at the weekend is a doubt for this match. Paul Parry is also likely to be involved after playing a part in the last five games.
Norwich City v Leicester City
Leicester will be desperate to turn things around after an embarrassing defeat by Portsmouth at the weekend left them bottom of the table. Norwich are still in the top six but they’ve lost two of their last three matches.
Andrew Crofts should play in midfield for Norwich while Andy King should be in the same position for Leicester. Both players have the distinction of having scored their club’s earliest goal in a match this season. Andrew has scored in the 42nd minute and Andy in the 51st.
Nottingham Forest v Sheffield United
Forest are unbeaten in seven matches. I know most of them were draws but two of the last three were wins so things are definitely looking up. The same can’t be said of Gary Speed’s Sheffield United, who are in 18th place.
Chris Gunter should keep his place in Forest’s defence but Robert Earnshaw misses out again with a thigh injury.
Ched Evans should start for Sheffield United.
Portsmouth v Bristol City
Portsmouth finally got their first win of the season against Leicester City and Bristol City might be a good place to continue that run. They too have won only once this season.
Christian Ribeiro will hope to keep his place in Bristol City’s defence although Lewin Nyatanga was said to be nearing a return. Brett Pitman is likely to be a substitute as he continues to get used to Championship football. James Wilson (knee) and Sam Vokes (hamstring) are both definitely out.

Championship Fixtures 28th September 2010 Part 1
Cardiff City v Crystal Palace
Cardiff hope to preserve their unbeaten home record when they face struggling Crystal Palace. As Palace are yet to pick up any points away, you’d have to say the odds were in Cardiff’s favour.
Craig Bellamy is unlikely to play against Crystal Palace but Darcy Blake should keep his place in the starting line-up. Jason Koumas is more likely to make another substitute appearance as he builds up his fitness. Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig will probably be on the bench.
Andy Dorman will hope to be back in the starting line-up for Cardiff but he could be on the bench with Lewis Price again.
Coventry City v Doncaster Rovers
Doncaster suffered a rare defeat at the weekend but you might forgive them as they were playing Queen’s Park Rangers. Coventry’s defeat to Preston North End will be far more difficult to take – they started well but they have won only one of their last five games.
Freddy Eastwood won’t play for Coventry as he is recovering from a knee operation.
Brian Stock could join John Oster in the starting line-up after being on the bench against QPR. If Brian starts, it will be the 250th start of his career.
Derby County v Middlesbrough
Derby beat Crystal Palace 5-0 in their last game and now they face Middlesbrough, who are yet to win a match away. Derby haven’t beaten Middlesbrough for more than ten years.
Robbie Savage will hope to keep his place in Derby’s team after doing well last week. Gareth Roberts’ calf is still troubling him and he’s unlikely to play.
There’s nothing to suggest Boro will recall Danny Coyne to the starting line-up.

Champions' League Fixture 28th September 2010
Partizan Belgrade v Arsenal
Arsenal are away to Partizan Belgrade in the Champions’ League as they aim to bounce back from their weekend defeat to West Bromwich Albion. I don’t know much about Partizan Belgrade but they might be better than West Brom.
Arsenal are missing a number of first-team players, including Aaron Ramsey.

Wales v Bulgaria News 28th September
It is looking increasingly likely that Wales will have to face Bulgaria and Switzerland without Craig Bellamy. It’s his knee again. Cardiff are working to build him up to full fitness but they don’t think he’ll be ready for Wales.
Millwall manager and former Welsh international Kenny Jackett believes Brian Flynn should become the permanent manager of Wales.
The Mirror thinks Terry Venables could be the next manager of Wales.
FA Wales have not yet advertised the job of national team manager so any rumours are probably without foundation.

James Collins says his Aston Villa team-mate Emile Heskey can continue his good form and silence his doubters.
Sam Ricketts was happy with his performance for Bolton Wanderers against Manchester United. He was marking Wayne Rooney, which doesn’t sound like the easiest job in the world. But Sam could very easily not have been a footballer at all.
Ryan Giggs has a hamstring injury and will probably be out for the next two weeks.
Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross has allegedly attracted the attention of Juventus.

Barnet have signed Grant Basey until January. The former Charlton Athletic defender was on trial at Aberdeen but they were unable to sign him due to financial problems.
Nathaniel Jarvis is hoping his performance on loan at Southend United will impress the manager of his parent club Dave Jones.

Premier League Results 26th September 2010
Bolton Wanderers 2-2 Manchester United
Manchester United were unable to take advantage of Arsenal’s and Chelsea’s defeats when they could only draw with Bolton.
Michael Owen came off the bench to score Manchester United’s equaliser and claim a point for this team. Ryan Giggs could also have got on the scoresheet but Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen saved his shot and Ryan was unable to make amends, a hamstring injury forcing him off after 53 minutes.
Sam Ricketts played the full match in defence for Bolton – his first league start of the season.
Newcastle United 1-2 Stoke City
Stoke fought back to grab an away win against Newcastle, who were quite unlucky to be on the losing side. Stoke were poor in the first half and didn’t look like they’d win the match but Tony Pulis presumably had some choice words at half-time.
Danny Collins and Ryan Shawcross both played in defence for Stoke and played a big part in preventing Newcastle from scoring a second.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-2 Aston Villa
Gerard Houllier won for the first time as Aston Villa manager with a victory over near neighbours Wolves. After Wolves equalised, the home side looked the stronger but none other than Emile Heskey came to Villa’s rescue.
David Jones and Dave Edwards both started for Wolves – it was the latter’s first league start of the season. Wayne Hennessey was on the bench.
James Collins looked back to his best in defence for Aston Villa.

League Two Results 25th September 2010 Part 2
Northampton Town 2-0 Bradford City
Having disposed of one of the Premier League’s most successful teams this week, Northampton seemed to have little difficulty with former Premier League side Bradford, who weren’t at their best. Northampton should really have won by more but we’ll let them off, they were probably tired.
Paul Walker was on the bench for Northampton.
Bradford will be counting the days until Michael Flynn returns him his groin injury.
Port Vale 2-0 Accrington Stanley
Accrington’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end at the home of league leaders Port Vale. They didn’t play especially badly and they remained in the top seven but Port Vale are on great form right now and not many teams will stop them.
Gareth Owen played in defence for Port Vale.
Rotherham United 1-0 Chesterfield
Chesterfield lost for the first time this season against a strong Rotherham side, who move ahead of them into third place.
Mark Bradley made another late appearance from the bench for Rotherham. He hasn’t had many chances at his new club – maybe if one of the midfielders got injured really early in the game, he could come on and have a nice long time to show what he can do. But I don’t want to see any player get injured and I’m sure Mark feels the same way.
Craig Davies did his best to add to his four goals this season but it didn’t happen for him this time with the Rotherham keeper on great form. Robert Page was on the bench.
Stockport County 2-2 Aldershot Town
Aldershot took the lead in the first half and looked set to take all three points but two late goals from Stockport meant they were forced to share.
Owain fon Williams was on the bench for Stockport.
Darren Jones returned to Aldershot’s defence which meant Aaron Morris was back on the bench despite a great performance last week.
Torquay United 1-3 Macclesfield Town
The problem with winning several games is a row is that it can become almost second nature. So when someone does finally beat you, you can’t quite remember what the winning formula was. At least, that’s why I think Torquay are struggling for points now. Macclesfield scored twice in two minutes to take the points although some would say Torquay were the better side.
Sam Wedgbury was a late substitute for Macclesfield.
Wycombe Wanderers 2-2 Shrewsbury Town
A stoppage-time goal for Wycombe meant that Shrewsbury were forced to share the points – and surrender their place at the top of the League Two table.
Wycombe were winning 1-0 with just over ten minutes left to play but substitute Tom Bradshaw’s 78th minute equaliser inspired Shrewsbury to fight for a winner. And they did get another goal but unfortunately so did Wycombe.

League Two Results 25th September 2010 Part 1
Cheltenham Town 0-2 Bury
This defeat meabs Cheltenham have dropped to15th place – but as they’re only one point behind the play-offs, there’s no need to worry just yet. Three points are enough for Bury to climb up to 6th place.
Cheltenham were without Josh Low, who has missed the last two games with a calf injury.
Crewe Alexandra 1-1 Oxford United
Oxford had a player booked twice in five minuites but luckily he had scored the equaliser by then. Crewe then appeared to take the lead for a second time but the attempt was ruled out for offside and the points were shared.
Rhys Taylor was in goal for Crewe. His captain Dave Artell thinks he shouldn’t have conceded the second goal – because the player should have already been sent off for fouling Rhys.
Gillingham 1-0 Burton Albion
Gillingham got their second win of the season against a side whose away record is now completely identical to Gillingham’s.
Tony James returned to Burton’s bench and it looks like they missed him.
Hereford United 1-3 Southend United
Hereford are now propping up the lead after Barnet got a point and Southend became the third side in a row to beat Hereford at home.
Stuart Fleetwood is only one yellow card away from a suspension after picking up his fourth of the season in this match. And he’s not the only one. Ryan Green and Ryan Valentine were also on the losing side.
Southend’s Peter Gilbert got his third booking of the season – which is quite a lot considering he’s only played six games.(unless there are some Johnstone’s Paint Trophy results I’ve missed). Cardiff loanee Nathaniel Jarvis only arrived on Tuesday but he got to make his debut after 77 minutes.
Morecambe 2-2 Barnet
Barnet are no longer top of the table after getting a better result than Hereford United. They took the lead twice but each time Morecambe managed to equalise.
I’ve got no idea where Morecambe defender Darren Moss is but there is a rumour he’s on the transfer list/been paid off.

Welsh Player News 27th September 2010 (League One)
Rhoys Wiggins has been giving advice to Bournemouth’s new loan signing Adam Smith – advice which he himself isn’t going to follow!
Bristol Rovers defender Byron Anthony is happy to be a regular in the side but he’d rather have a settled role – as long as it isn’t left back.
Colchester City manager John Ward, defender Magnus Okuonghae and Supporters’ Association chairman Jon Burns have praised Lloyd James for coming off the bench to play in an unfamiliar position against his old club.
Owain Tudur Jones has extended his loan with Yeovil Town. He will remain at the club for another month.

League One Results 25th September 2010 Part 2
Peterborough United 2-1 Milton Keynes Dons
Peterborough move back into the automatic promotion places with victory over MK Dons. The home side thus retain their 100% record at home. MK Dons found an equaliser just one minute after Peterborough’s opening goal. Luckily for Peterborough, they were unable to repeat the same trick twice.
Arron Davies made his return to Peterborough’s squad following a hamstring injury but he stayed on the bench.
Jermaine Easter came close to scoring his first league goal of the season for MK Dons.
Rochdale 1-1 Plymouth Argyle
The first half of the game was Plymouth’s and the second was Rochdale’s so perhaps it’s only fair that they should share the points too. Both teams had chances to grab all three points but although they worked hard, it didn’t happen.
Matt Done was an unusued Rochdale substitute.
Carl Fletcher played the full match for Plymouth.
Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Southampton
Sheffield Wednesday sink to 14th place after losing their fourth game in a row. Southampton are probably quite sympathetic as they aren’t doing that well themselves but they didn’t waste any sympathy on them during the game.
Ryan Doble was on the bench again for Southampton.
Swindon Town 1-0 Huddersfield Town
Last season’s play-off runners-up got their second home victory of the season over Huddersfield. Huddersfield have had a great start to the season but only one side deserved to win this game and it wasn’t the side playing away. Huddersfield will be disappointed though – they didn’t concede until the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Billy Bodin made his second consecutive appearance on Swindon’s bench.
Yeovil Town 1-3 Exeter City
The Exeter manager described this game as ‘terrific’ and he did have a point (or rather three points) but he was deservedly on the winning side which always helps when it comes to discussing a game’s merits. The Yeovil manager’s words are not recorded by BBC Sport so I can only assume they’re unprintable.
Yeovil’s Welsh loanees Owain Tudur Jones, Gavin Williams and Shaun MacDonald all started for Yeovil. It can’t have been a particularly good game for any of them but at least Gavin can say he got an sssist.
Richard Duffy played the full match for Exeter. Daniel Nardiello was sharing the bench with Rob Edwards due to a knock but luckily Exeter managed without him.

League One Results 25th September 2010 Part 1
Bournemouth 2-0 Carlisle United
Bournemouth ended Carlisle’s unbeaten start to the season and climbed to third place, despite a disappointing first half.
Rhoys Wiggins played the full match for Bournemouth but was unable to score in a third consecutive game. Joe Partington wasn’t in the squad.
Jason Price made another substitute appearance for Carlisle but he was unable to bring them back into the game. He did score for the reserves this week though.
Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 Oldham Athletic
Brighton continue their impressive start to the season, beating Oldham and moving to the top of the table, something they probably haven’t done since Bobby Zamora was in the team. Oldham will be wishing the referee had blown the whistle just a few seconds earlier – Brighton’s winner came in the 94th minute.
Joe Jacobson retutned to Oldham’s squad but was an unused substitute.
Bristol Rovers 2-1 Notts County
When a player is shown a second yellow card in the 39th minute and you’re already a goal down, getting back into the game is far from easy. Bristol Rovers then went 2-0 ahead but Notts County kept on fighting and managed to get a goal back.
Bristol Rovers’ Byron Anthony was again Man of the Match but he was so excited by the news, he promptly gave the ball away and Notts County ended up scoring. But I’m sure I’d do the same and at least he gave the ball to another Welshman.
There was a first appearance of the season for young striker Eliot Richards but Ben Swallow was an unused substitute.
Ben Davies scored the late goal which gave Notts County a small chance. They didn’t take the chance but it will boost his goal tally if nothing else.
Charlton Athletic 2-2 Dagenham & Redbridge
Three stoppage-time goals – one for Dagenham & Redbridge at the end of the first half, one each at the end of the second half – helped Dag & Red to their first away point of the season against fairly local rivals Charlton.
Charlton probably thought they’d won it when they took the lead for a second time in the 91st minute but two minutes later, the scores were level again.
Tony Roberts played in goal for Dag & Red.
Colchester United 3-1 Tranmere Rovers
Colchester deservedly remain unbeaten after beating Tranmere. Amazingly, this was their first home win of the season. Dag & Red’s draw meant they climbed above Tranmere, who sink to the bottom on goal difference. Tranmere finished the game well – first their keeper saved a penalty, preventing Colchester from going 4-0 ahead, then they scored a goal of their own a minute later. But it was a bit late for a comeback then and the game finished 3-1.
Lloyd James stayed on the bench for Colchester.
Tranmere were without the injured Ash Taylor (knee).
Hartlepool United 2-1 Walsall
Hartlepool got a much-needed three points at the expense of Walsall, who drop into the bottom four as a result. Walsall took an early lead but Hartlepool fought back to take the points.
Sean Geddes was back on the bench for Walsall.
Bournemouth ended Carlisle’s unbeaten start to the season and climbed to third place, despite a disappointing first half.

Welsh Player News 27th September 2010 (Championship) Part 2
John Oster has done well since returning from a knee injury. Doncaster haven’t lost a single match this season when John’s been playing.
John thinks Queen’s Park Rangers will be promoted this season. Somehow I don’t think he’s alone in that.
Formwe Wales under-21 international Rhys Williams will return to Middlesbrough in the next fortnight as he continues to recover from a pelvic injury. He has spent the first part of his rehabilitation in his home country Australia.
Simon Church hopes his goal for the reserves will remind manager Brian McDermott of his existence. Hal Robson-Kanu also scored.
Simon hopes to be a big part of the Reading and Wales teams this season.
The Daily Mail interviews new Sheffield United boss Gary Speed.
Gary wants to bolster his squad and what better way than to raid Manchester United? Gary doesn’t blame the Sheffield United strikers for their lack of goals but if some of the players could share the goalscoring burden with Ched Evans, that would be great.
Ched is very happy with the appointment of Gary as manager of Sheffield United. He believes the club could finish in the top six.

Welsh Player News 27th September 2010 (Championship) Part 1
Bristol City manager Keith Millen has asked the fans to be patient with new signing Brett Pitman, who isn’t used to playing at Championship level.
Chris Burke believes his Cardiff City team-mate Craig Bellamy will make a big impression once he’s back from injury.
Kenny Jackett says Craig is an asset to the Championship but he hopes he won’t play in either of Cardiff’s matches against Millwall this season. Kenny is also happy about Steve Morison’s playing international football for Wales.
Givemefootball believe Cardiff City’s Adam Matthews will bounce back from his own goal. Adam’s team-mate Jay Bothroyd says Adam should embrace the criticism, which is an interesting concept but if it helps Adam, great.
Darcy Blake hopes to be part of the Wales squad against Bulgaria and Switzerland. But Darcy thought his Wales hopes were at an end on Saturday after a strong challenge made him fear he’d broken his leg. His manager Dave Jones was also far from thrilled with the challenge although Millwall manager Kenny Jackett felt the red card was harsh.
Darcy has agreed but presumably not signed a new contract with Cardiff City. Cardiff have also opened contract negotiations with Adam Matthews but they’ve failed to agree anything – hardly surprising after the way his manager treated him last week.
Coventry City striker Freddy Eastwood has had an operation on his knee and is expected to be out for eight weeks.
Robbie Savage gives his view on diving (also posting a picture of himself in the bath) and names Jack Wilshere as England’s next big thing (no offence, Jack, but I hope you don’t play against Wales)

Championship Results 25th September 2010 Part 4
Reading 3-0 Barnsley
Reading are up and running now and even a draw in their next game could be enough to see them move into the play-offs. Reading were the better side from the start but a red card just after the hour mark should have given Barnsley the advantage.
It didn’t. It had far more of a positive effect on Reading, who went ahead in the 78th minute before scoring twice in stoppage time.
Simon Church started for Reading but he wasn’t quite able to find the back of the net – unlike Hal Robson-Kanu, who replaced him and got the winner. Jake Taylor was an unused substitute.
Watford 3-1 Middlesbrough
Watford are up to third after winning their fourth consecutive league game and they fully deserved it after another strong performance. As for Middlesbrough’s league position, they’d probably prefer it if I didn’t mention it. Suffice to say, it’s quite a lot lower than Watford’s. They were probably hoping they’d turned the corner after beating Burnley and Reading – hardly the weakest teams in the division – in their first two games – but Watford soon proved them wrong.
Danny Coyne was on the bench for Middlesbrough.

Championship Results 25th September 2010 Part 3
Nottingham Forest 3-1 Swansea City
Forest won at home for the first time this season when they hosted Swansea, a team who still haven’t got even one point from their away fixtures.
Forest striker Robert Earnshaw failed a fitness test on a hamstring injury and will feel very glad that Lewis McGugan, who scored two of Forest’s goals, isn’t a striker. Chris Gunter played the full match.
It was a back-pass from Swansea’s Ashley Williams which led to the penalty but only indirectly. At home he’s always excellent so it’s a shame that Wales’ next match will be played at the Cardiff City Stadium and not the Liberty. Neil Taylor’s also resulted in a shot on goal but Forest didn’t score from it so it didn’t matter.
Joe Allen came close to scoring for Swansea – and his team did get the rebound into the back of the net. David Cotterill started but he suffered a groin injury and was replaced at half-time.
Swansea’s substitutes included Jazz Richards but not goalkeeper David Cornell, who is rumoured to be going out on loan somewhere.
Queen’s Park Rangers 3-0 Doncaster Rovers
There’s just no stopping them. Doncaster have had a great start to the season and are only a point outside the play-offs. Doncaster played well and certainly didn’t deserve to lose by three clear goals but QPR are unstoppable.
Brian Stock, who is recovering from a back injury, was on the bench but John Oster played the full match.

Derby County 5-0 Crystal Palace
Derby hadn’t won at home before this match and it’s fair to say they made a pretty thorough job of it. True, Palace went down to 10 men after just 20 minutes but Derby were good value for their win.
Robbie Savage was back in the starting line-up for Derby and set up the fourth goal. Gareth Roberts missed out again after failing a fitness test on his calf.
Andy Dorman was a late substitute for Palace but Lewis Price stayed on the bench as his former side beat his current one.
Leeds United 1-0 Sheffield United
Leeds got back to winning ways against Sheffield United – and beat them for the first time for 17 years. The two sides were equal for much of the game and either team could have taken the lead but Leeds were the ones to break the deadlock.
Jason Brown and Sanchez Watt were both left on Leeds’ bench.
Ched Evans started for Sheffield United and could have scored from a free kick.
Norwich City 0-2 Hull City
Hull won away for the first time for well over a year with victory over Norwich City, who remain in the play-off zone despite the defeat. Hull actually put the ball in the net three times but the first was ruled out for offside. Luckily, this did not deter them and the next time, they made sure they were in an onside position when the ball was played. Norwich played well and looked the most likely to score at 0-0 but, as pundits are so fond of saying, goals do change games.
Andrew Crofts didn’t deserve to be on the losing side but unfortunately he plays for Norwich.

Championship Results 25th September 2010 Part 1
Burnley 0-0 Bristol City
Bristol City got a very welcome point away at Burnley, who dropped points at home for the very first time in the league this season. It might have been a very different story of Graham Alexander had scored his penalty for Burnley but the impossible sometimes happens in football and a Graham Alexander penalty-miss is not something that comes along very often.
Burnley probably would have taken the league without a well-timed block from Christian Ribeiro, who also gave Burnley a scare with his attacking skills. Brett Pitman was again reduced to a late substitute appearance.
Cardiff City 2-1 Millwall
I wanted both these teams to win this match but a win for one team was the best I could hope for. Cardiff bounced back from two away defeats to take the points with a last-minute header. Millwall took the lead, which they’ve done many times this season and they did well to stay level for so long – they went down to 10 men after 40 minutes. But they’ll be disappointed with the result.
Darcy Blake was the only Welshman to start for Cardiff and did a good job. Jason Koumas was a late substitute and nearly scored but Aaron Wildig and Adam Matthews stayed on the bench. And Adam might be very relieved about that after his manager’s rant about sending him to the reserves.
Steve Morison played up front for Millwall and won the admiration of the opposition, if not the fans.
Coventry City 1-2 Preston North End
Preston are up to 22nd after getting their first away win of the season at Coventry, who were defeated at home for the first time this season.
Coventry missed Freddy Eastwood, who is out following a knee operation.
Craig Morgan was left on the bench again but he came on after just 36 minutes to help Preston to their win. Paul Parry was also a substitute but he had to wait until the 64th minute before making his appearances.

Premier League News 27th September 2010
Mark Hughes is one of many who feels referees need to be more consistent.
Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez feels Roberto Mancini made a mistake in sending Craig Bellamy on loan to Cardiff City. Terry Venables feels Craig’s absence is part of the reason why Manchester City aren’t challenging for the title.
Gareth Bale is a contender for the PFA Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month. If Gareth wins, he can put it on the mantelpiece beside his August Goal of the Month trophy. If they have trophies.

Premier League Results 26th September 2010
Arsenal 2-3 West Bromwich Albion
A very painful result that could have been a lot considering West Brom went 3-0 up. I have no further comment to make on this matter except I am proud to support the club Samir Nasri plays for.
Aaron Ramsey’s return can’t come too soon – but it won’t be for over a month.
Boaz Myhill was on the bench for West Brom.
Blackpool 1-2 Blackburn Rovers
As if Saturday hadn’t already been cruel enough, Blackburn them beat my second favourite team. Blackpool opened the scoring for Blackburn when Charlie Adam, most unusually, got the ball in the wrong net. It was a horrible moment but credit to Ian Holloway for his wonderful reaction: “What a finish.” Cardiff City manager Dave Jones should take note. Blackpool managed a late equaliser but later still, in the third minute of stoppage time, Blackburn got the winner.
Neal Eardley was back in Blackpool’s starting line-up and came close to scoring but it was the player who replaced him who got Blackpool’s goal. David Vaughan also played and had a good game. Rob Edwards wasn’t in the squad.
Fulham 0-0 Everton
Fulham will be disappointed only to get a point at home for Everton, a team who haven’t been noted for their away wins – or, for that matter, their home wins – this season. Everton played well, earning praise from both managers, but Fulham remain unbeaten and being 6th in the table really isn’t anything to complain about.
Fulham midfielder Simon Davies played the first 71 minutes against his old club. He could have scored but he missed the ball. I still love him though.
West Ham United 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur
West Ham got their first win of the season, providing all Gooners with some much-needed cheer at the same time. Tottenham weren’t at their best but West Ham gave an energetic display and thoroughly deserved teir win.
Gareth Bale played left back. He didn’t do anything wrong as far as I could tell but maybe he should have had a longer rest. I don’t want him collapsing with exhaustion against Bulgaria.
Danny Gabbidon also played at left back and put in an impressive performance, helping West Ham to keep a clean sheet.

League Two Fixtures 25th September 2010 Part 2
Northampton Town v Bradford City
Northampton’s confidence should be high after knocking Liverpool out of the Carling Cup. (Yes, that is correct. It was Liverpool.) Now they take on former Premier League side Bradford.
Paul Walker could be on the bench for Northampton.
Bradford’s Michael Flynn returned to training this week after a hernia operation but he’s unlikely to play.
Port Vale v Accrington Stanley
A big enough win could see Port Vale go top even if current top side Shrewsbury Town do win. But Accrington have had a strong start to the season and although they’re yet to win away, they have an unbeaten record which they won’t want to lose.
Gareth Owen should be in defence for Port Vale. Lewis Haldane is still recovering from an insect bite he suffered in pre-season (and ‘suffered’ really is the word for it. Hope you’re doing okay, Lewis);
Rotherham United v Chesterfield
Rotherham could take Chesterfield’s place in the top three if they win this match although it does depend on Torquay United. With Rotherham unbeaten at home and Chesterfield unbeaten away (and home), I fancy a draw.
Mark Bradley will probably be on the bench for Rotherham but they really should give him a chance soon.
Craig Davies should start up front for Chesterfield with Robert Page on the bench.
Stockport v Aldershot Town
Stockport are slowly climbing the table and they’ll be hoping this match marks their first home win of the season. Aldershot will be hoping this is their first away win of the season.
Owain fon Williams will probably be on the bench for Stockport.
Aaron Morris deserves to keep his place after an excellent performance for Aldershot against Wycombe Wanderers but if Darren Jones is back from the thigh strain which kept him out of the team last week, he could take Aaron’s place.
Torquay United v Macclesfield Town
Torquay haven’t won since their long unbeaten run came to an end but they are kind of on another unbeaten run now because they haven’t lost for two games. Macclesfield are outside the bottom two on goal diffrerence.
Sam Wedgbury will probably be on the bench for Macclesfield.
Wycombe Wanderers v Shrewsbury Town
Shrewsbury are top of the table now but they’ll almost certainly need to win to stay there. As for Wycombe, I’d never have realised they were mounting a promotion challenge if their manager hadn’t said so.
Tom Bradshaw should be on the bench for Shrewsbury.

League Two Fixtures 25th September 2010 Part 1
Cheltenham Town v Bury
Cheltenham aim to continue an impressive start to the season with victory over Bury – but Bury are only a point behind them.
Josh Low missed the last match with a calf injury and he’s not expected to play against Bury either.
Crewe Alexandra v Oxford United
Crewe haven’t won many games this season but when they win, they really do win. Crewe are ahead of Oxford only on goal difference – which does tend to happen if you’re a side that wins big.
Rhys Taylor will be in goal for Crewe.
Oxford’s Rhys Day is still out with a kne injury.
Gillingham v Burton Albion
Gillingham will be eager for another win and as they’re playing at home, it’s not impossible. Burton are up in the play-off places but as they’ve won the same number of away games as Gillingham, the home side have reason to be hopeful.
Burton still have a bit of a defensive crisis so Tony James should (deservedly) keep his place. Garyn Preen could be on the bench again.
Hereford United v Southend United
Hereford hope to win their first home game of the season and climb out of the bottom two. A win will guarantee they’re at least 22nd as they’d be overtaking Southend,
Hereford have signed 18 year old striker Nathaniel Jarvis on loan from Cardiff City. He could play up front with Stuart Fleetwood. Ryan Green and Ryan Valentine should start in defence.
Peter Gilbert should be in defence for Southend.
Morecambe v Barnet
Barnet, who are yet to gain a point away from home, face a Morecambe side who are unbeaten on their home turf. They haven’t actually won at home or anything, they’ve had three draws but Barnet might still be getting their own drawers in a twist.
Darren Moss was missing from Morecambe’s last two matches but I don’t know why, or whether he’s likely to be back today. No-one tells me anything.

League One Fixtures 25th September 2010 Part 2
Peterborough United v Milton Keynes Dons
Both teams are in the play-off places as Peterborough look to bounce back into the Championship at the first attempt and MK Dons hope this season will be more like the one two seasons ago than the last one.
Arron Davies was on the bench for the midweek Carling Cup defeat after recovering from a knee injury.
Jermaine Easter is still looking for his first league goal of the season for MK Dons.
Rochdale v Plymouth Argyle
Rochdale manager Keith Millen believes the club need 50 points in order to be safe from relegation. But if they’re this good when they’re not accustomed to League One football, maybe they should set their heights higher than merely surviving.Plymouth are lower down the table but their manager is in a confident mood.
Matt Done should be on the bench for Rochdale.
Carl Fletcher will be in Plymouth’s midfield.
Sheffield Wednesday v Southampton
Before the league started, Southampton were looking like favourites for the title. Once it did start, Sheffield Wednesday looked like the best team in League One. Now, with Sheffield Wednesday mid-table and Southampton in 23rd place, both teams really need to improve.
Ryan Doble and Anthony Pulis were on Southampton’s bench last weekend. Maybe they’ll be there this weekend too. Ryan scored twice for the reserves on Wednesday.
Yeovil Town v Exeter City
Exeter have 10 points from their seven games so far – three more than Yeovil – but they’ve only actually won twice. The same as Yeovil.
Owain Tudur Jones has extended his loan spell at Yeovil and could start alongside fellow Welshman Shaun MacDonald and Gavin Williams.
Richard Duffy should start for Exeter but Yahoo Sport thinks Daniel Nardiello will be on the bench, probably with with Rob Edwards.

League One Fixtures 25th September 2010 Part 1
Bournemouth v Carlisle United
With Carlisle struggling last season before hauling themselves up to mid-table, and with Bournemouth a newly promoted team, this might not have looked like a key fixture on paper. And perhaps it isn’t, the season has only just started after all. But both teams could potentially be top of the league (or joint top on Bounremouth’s case) by the end of today
Rhoys Wiggins should keep his place in Bournemouth’s starting line-up after scoring in his last two games. Joe Partington is more likely to be on the bench.
Jason Price is still yet to make his first start as an official Carisle player but he might have to be content with a substitute appearance again.
Brighton & Hove Albion v Oldham Athletic
Brighton are one of League One’s surprise packages so far – they are joint top of League One. But Oldham have also had a good start and it will be nice if these teams can be involved in a promotion battle this season. It would form an interesting contract with last season’s relegation battle.
Joe Jacobson will probably be on the bench for Oldham.
Bristol Rovers v Notts County
Notts County are yet to win away this season but if there’s one thing we know about Bristol Rovers is that any result is possible. (Well technically that’s true of every team but maybe Bristol Rovers are a bit less predictable than most.)
Byron Anthony should keep his place in Bristol Rovers’ defence. Ben Swallow and Eliot Richards will be on the bench.
Ben Davies will hope to his goal and assist tallies from County’s midfield.
Charlton Athletic v Dagenham & Redbridge
Charlton might be mid-table but they’re still only three points from the top of the table. And they’ll fancy their chances of getting three points against a side which has only won once this season and are yet to get a single point away.
Tony Roberts will be in goal for Dag & Red.
Colchester United v Tranmere Rovers
Apparently this is Colchester’s best start to a season for years which is a surprise considering how well they started last season. Their start could get even better considering that Tranmere are in the bottom four and they haven’t won any games away.
Lloyd James is probably most likely to be on the bench for Colchester. Lee Beevers is out with a pram injury.
Hartlepool United v Walsall
Hartlepool are out of the relegation places but only on goal difference and they’ve picked up just one point on their home ground so far. They face Walsall, who also have six points but a better goal difference.
Sean Geddes might or might not be on Walsall’s bench. He wasn’t last week and he did play for the reserves two days ago. He scored a goal too.

Championship Fixtures 25th September 2010 Part 4
Reading v Barnsley
Reading haven’t lost to Barnsley since 1997, which was probably the season in which the Tykes were promoted so they were probably especially good that year. And speaking of being especially good, Reading aren’t. Although they have improved a lot recently. Barnsley are doing slightly better than Reading but they haven’t won away yet.
BBC Sport says Hal Robson-Kanu, Jake Taylor and some non-Welsh guy (Michail Antonio) are fighting it out to start for Reading so I don’t know what that says about Simon Church. But let’s assume they didn’t mention him because they were sure a striker as good as him would be starting.
Scunthorpe United v Ipswich Town
Scunthorpe have been surprisingly good this season but facing Ipswich – whose only defeat was by Qureeen’s Park Rangers, who are so good they don’t really count – won’t be easy.
Troy Brown will probably be on the bench for Ipswich.
Watford v Middlesbrough
Watford are doing so well, I couldn’t find them in the table because I wasn’t looking high enough. Middlesbrough I found far more easily. If Watford are hoping to improve on their last result, they are sure to be disappointed and Boro actually have a bit of an unbeaten run going.
Danny Coyne will be on the bench for Middlesbrough. Rhys Williams has a long-term pelvis injury.

Championship Fixtures 25th September 2010 Part 3
Nottingham Forest v Swansea City
Nottingham Forest are unbeaten at home (and not just this season: this record stretches back more than a year) while Swansea don’t even have a single point away. So a home win sounds like the most likely result – which will be a great relief to Forest fans as it will be their first win of the season.
Chris Gunter should start for Forest but Robert Earnshaw’s hamstring is playing up again – maybe he shouldn’t have started last week after all.
As a Cardiff girl, I might have certain... reservations about Swansea City but one thing you can rely on them to do is to put a few Welsh players in their team. Ashley Wiliams and Neil Taylor look certain ti start (assuming Neil’s absence from the Carling Cup win over Peterborough United wasn’t due to injury) while David Cotterill, who played well in the aforementioned Carling Cup game, could start ahead of Joe Allen. But maybe he won’t. David Cornell will probably be on the bench unless Swansea manager Brendan Rogers has any funny ideas about putting their new goalkeeper there instead. Jazz Richards could also be on the bench.
Queen’s Park Rangers v Doncaster Rovers
Doncaster are unbeaten in four matches and although QPR are unbeaten in seven, Doncaster are more than capable of springing the odd surprise when they feel like it.
If Brian Stock is sufficiently recovered from his back problems, the Doncaster captain will make his 250th league start. John Oster should start too but whatever number of starts he is on, it’s obviously not worth celebrating or BBC Sport would have said something.
Nottingham Forest are unbeaten at home (and not just this season: this record stretches back more than a year) while Swansea don’t even have a single point away. So a home win sounds like the most likely result – which will be a great relief to Forest fans as it will be their first win of the season.

Championship Fixtures 25th September 2010 Part 2
Coventry City v Preston North End
Coventry have a good chance of keeping their unbeaten home record intact when they host Preston North End, who might consider changing their name to Preston Bottom End if they don’t start picking up some more points soon – although to be fair they’re not quite bottom as they do have one more point than Portsmouth, the only team they’ve beaten.
Coventry striker Freddy Eastwood has a knee injury and is expected to be out for eight weeks.
Craig Morgan has been on the bench for Preston’s last two games but Paul Parry has played at least part of the match every week since building up his match fitness sufficiently to return to Championship football.
Derby County v Crystal Palace
Derby have not won a single home match this season while Crystal Palace haven’t picked up any points at all in away fixtures, or scored any goals. Something’s got to give.
Gareth Roberts could miss out for Derby again as the club continue to monitor his ankle problem. Robbie Savage could return to the starting line-up after being on the bench last week.
Andy Dorman should start for Crystal Palace. Lewis Price could be in goal against the side which released him at the end of last season but he probably won’t be.
Leeds United v Sheffield United
Leeds failed to win their last two games so they’ll be eager to get back on track against Sheffield United Sheff Utd manager Gary Speed takes on the team with which has career began. The last time Leeds beat Sheff Utd, Gary scored. For Leeds, that is.
Sanchez Watt will hope to be back in the starting line-up after being a substitute for the last two matches. Loan goalkeeper Jason Brown is likely to be on the bench no matter what. He should be playing but it must be nice to have a change of bench occasionally, it helps keep life interesting.
Ched Evans should keep his place in Sheff Utd’s starting line-up after scoring the winner last weekend.
Norwich City v Hull City
This time last season, I’m not sure Norwich were even in the play-off places but they went on to win League One by some distance. This season has started much better for the Canaries, who are in fourth place. But not for much longer if Hull have any say in it… although the last time Hull beat Norwich, Hull manager Nigel Pearson was Year 3 at most while Norwich manager Paul Lambert was in nappies. Not to mention that Hull’s last away win was 18 months ago.
Norwich midfielder Andrew Crofts will be doing his best to ensure Hull’s run of games without an away win doesn’t end tomorrow.

Championship Fixtures 25th September 2010 Part 1
Cardiff City v Millwall
I want both these teams to win but somehow I don’t think that will be possible. Both teams recently lost their unbeaten records but while Cardiff are only without a win in their last two games, Millwall’s most recent win was back in August. Cardiff have not beaten Millwall in the league for 27 years.
Cardiff are still without star striker Craig Bellamy, who has a knee injury. His participation in Wales’ upcoming qualifiers must be in doubt too.
Darcy Blake should keep his place in Cardiff’s starting line-up after being the only player to win praise from his manager when they lost to Ipswich last weekend. Adam Matthews, on the other hand, was on the receiving end of most of the manager’s very public anger following an unfortunate own goal. If he hasn’t displayed the necessary ‘brightness’ to get back into the starting line-up, we can only blame one person. And it isn’t Adam.
Jason Koumas continues to build up match fitness but he’s likely to be involved in part of the game, as could Aaron Wildig, who did very well in his most recent substitute appearance.
Steve Morison should start for Millwall.
Burnley v Bristol City
Burnley hope to continue their excellent start to the season and while Bristol City’s only win of the season did come away, they were only playing Scunthorpe United.
Christian Ribeiro left the field early in Bristol City’s last match due to a calf injury but he should be fit for this game. Brett Pitman should be in the squad but he could keep his place on the bench considering that’s where he was when Bristol City got their first win.
Lewin Nyatanga and James Wilson both have dodgy knees but while James is out for the season, Lewin could return after playing in the reserves. Loanee Sam Vokes (hamstring) is not ready to return.

Premier League Fixtures 25th September 2010
Arsenal v West Bromwich Albion
Arsenal will be desperate to score at least twice as one goal just wasn’t enough against Sunderland last weekend. West Brom are quite a physical side and might fancy their chances. Especially as Cesc Fabregas is injured.
Aaron Ramsey misses out for Arsenal with a broken leg.
Boaz Myhill did well for West Brom in the Carling Cup victory over Manchester City but he’ll probably be back on the bench for this match.
Blackpool v Blackburn Rovers
Blackpool have made an excellent start to the season, only losing to Arsenal and Chelsea – and a number of teams will lose to those two. Blackburn’s recent success tends to be more down to their home form. Sam Allardyce faces the club who gave him his first taste of Football League management. They’ve come up in the world since then.
David Vaughan should start for Blackpool. Neal Eardley is also expected to be back in the starting line-up despite being substituted at half-time against Chelsea last weekend. This is due to a defensive crisis which could also see Rob Edwards return to the matchday squad.
Fulham v Everton
Everton travel to Mark Hughes’. Fulham in search of their first win in the knowledge that Fulham are yet to lose this season.
Simon Davies is likely to start against the club from which Fulham signed him.
West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham’s last match against a London side didn’t go as planned (well it did go as I planned, just not as they planned) and they’ll be hoping for a big improvement against West Ham. As West Ham only got their first point of the season last week, Tottenham probably have a chance of winning this.
Danny Gabbidon is expected to play for West Ham after being rested in midweek. Jack Collison has a long-term knee injury.
Gareth Bale was also rested so Tottenham could recall him unless Harry Redknapp feels he needs a longer rest.

Welsh Player News 23rd September 2010
Simon Davies is named by the Transfer Tavern as one of the five worst modern day signings (when he moved to Everton) but they say nice things about him too.
Harry Redknapp’s concern that Gareth Bale might burn out has been taken as a warning that perhaps he shouldn’t play in Wales’ upcoming matches.
David Jones says Wolverhampton Wanderers won’t be making life easy for Gerard Houllier in Sunday's match.
Vital Cardiff City name Steve Morison as a Player to Watch when they take on Millwall at the weekend. They describe him as ‘annoying’ but I think it’s a compliment.
Leicester City manager Paolo Sousa believes Andy King is a future Leicester City captain – even though he is a bit quiet. The 21 year old got to wear the armband in Leicester’s Carling Cup victory over Portsmouth. He didn’t play the full match but he obviously did something right because Leicester won.
The Peterborough United players have offered to spend one afternoon next month working for a local business. Peterborough Today suggests possible jobs for players including Arron Davies.
The excellent Hereford United blog Bulls News reports that former Welsh international Carl Robinson, now playing alongside Thierry Henry for the New York Bulls, says he’d consider joining Hereford United.
Condolences to Carl, who has recently lost his father. He writes this beautiful and moving tribute.

Portsmouth v Leicester City
What, again?
Portsmouth and Leicester meet at Fratton Park for the second time in four days. Leicester won the Carling Cup duel but Portsmouth will be out for revenge – especially as the League is rather more important than the Carling Cup. Portsmouth have the home advantage – but that hasn’t helped them in any other league game this season.
Andy King should keep his place in the starting line-up for Leicester. I wonder if he’ll also keep the captain’s armband.

Carling Cup Results 22nd September 2010
Aston Villa 3-1 Blackburn Rovers
Blackburn gave Villa – and their new manager Gerard Houllier – an uncomfortable time in the first half but Houllier must know how to deliver a decent half-time talk as Villa bounced back with three goals in eighteen minutes. Including one from none other than Emile Heskey.
James Collins was completely rested for this match – he wasn’t even on the Villa bench.
Liverpool 2-2 Northampton Town aet, 2-4 on penalties
It was amazing enough that Northampton even took Liverpool to extra time. Liverpool most certainly haven’t been at their best this season – although neither have Northampton - but Northampton aren’t exactly a Premier League side. They’re in League Two.
Northampton took the lead in extra time and came so close to winning it then and there. David Ngog, however, equalised for Liverpool but he was rather less composed when the penalty shoot-out came along – so it didn’t matter that Northampton’s Steve Guinan had sent Northampton’s first spot-kick over the bar. A second Liverpool penalty miss (Nathan Eccleston) gave Abdul Osman the chance to put Northampton into the fourth round. At the expense of Liverpool.
I hope no-one would have blamed him if the occasion had proved too much for his nerves although the scathing reaction from the commentators to the other penalty misses – have you ever scored a penalty against a Premier League keeper? Well, have you? – suggests this might not be the case. But Abdul Osman held his nerve – and whatever happens in the next round, it won’t only be the Northampton fans who are delighted with this result.
Paul Walker was on the bench for Northampton. I’d love to see him play in a competitive fixture but maybe this isn’t the ideal debut for an 18 year old goalkeeper. Although that’s not to say they wouldn’t have won if he had played.
Liverpool have won the League Cup (in its various forms) more times than any other club. But they won’t be winning it this year. Congratulations, Northampton.
Scunthorpe United 2-5 Manchester United
If Michael Owen is one of your second-choice strikers, the last thing you have is a weak squad and Manchester United proved they did not have one.
And Michael proved he still knows where the goal is with two goals against Scunthorpe.
I know it’s only Scunthorpe but they are better than Northampton Town.
Ryan Giggs was one of a number of rested players.
West Bromwich Albion 2-1 Manchester City
This is, of course, not a giant killing. But with Manchester City in possession of as many star players as the rest of the Premier League put together (well, it seems that way sometimes) and West Brom expected by most to go straight back down again, this still counts as a shock result.
Manchester City took the lead in the 19th minute but West Brom’s two goals in three minutes finished them off. And when they did come close to an equaliser, West Brom keeper Boaz Myhill was right there to stop him.
Wigan Athletic 2-1 Preston North End
Preston are making a habit of this. But at least it wasn’t so bad when it was Premier League side Wigan. Preston were still 1-0 up in the 88th minute but then Wigan found an equaliser, followed by a 92nd-minute winner.
Craig Morgan and Paul Parry were both on the bench for Preston but Paul made a substitute appearance.

League One Results 21st September 2010
Dagenham & Redbridge 1-1 Exeter City
Dagenham and Exeter shared the points and the Exeter manager, at least, feels this was fair.
Tony Roberts was in goal for Dagenham. I think Gareth Gwillim is English (though he must have some Welsh blood somewhere with a name like that) but just in case he’s Welsh, I’ll mention that his 68th-minute substitute appearance was his football league debut.
Richard Duffy started for Exeter but Daniel Nardiello was only a substitute. Rob Edwards stayed on the bench.
Plymouth Argyle 0-2 Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton move up to second in the table following an away victory over Plymouth, who are two points away from the relegation zone.
Carl Fletcher played the full match for Plymouth.

Carling Cup Results 21st September 2010 Part 2
Portsmouth 1-2 Leicester City
Portsmouth and Leicester took some time away from their League struggles with a match in the Carling Cup – and the knowledge that this time, someone definitely would win. Unfortunately for Portsmouth, it wasn’t them. Having a player sent off when they were 2-0 down probably didn’t help much.
Andy King was Leicester’s captain for the evening and got what proved to be the winning assist.
Stoke City 2-0 Fulham
Stoke are strong at home. Fulham struggle away. Although I thought there would only be one goal in it, a home win always looked like the probable result.
Ryan Shawcross played for Stoke and used his head – literally – to help prevent Fulham from equalising. But he did more to hinder than anything when he tried to help break up an argument. It’s good he tried though. Danny Collins was missing from the squad.
Simon Davies started for Fulham and could have equalised from a free kick.
Sunderland 1-2 West Ham United
It had to happen sooner or later, didn’t it. West Ham’s run of games without a win couldn’t go on for ever. Neither could their record of not having won away since August 2009. West Ham were very lucky that Burnley, Hull City and Portsmouth were all in the Premier League last season. Imagine if Hull had been relegated the season before instead.
West Ham defender Danny Gabbidon was rested. Jack Collison is recovering from his knee operation.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-4 Arsenal
Maybe we fans do know better than the players about some things. A number of fans last week were annoyed that Tomas Rosicky took Arsenal’s penalty against Sunderland, rather than Samir Nasri, who won it and was having a great game. This time, Samir took both penalties and scored them both, one on each side of the goalkeeper.
It was Tottenham’s not-quite-reserve side against Arsenal’s not-quite-youth team. The odds did not appear to be in Arsenal’s favour but as it happened, Tottenham fielded more debutants than Arsenal.
Gareth Bale was rested as Harry Redknapp was concerned one more game might kill him. Let’s hope he’s nice and rested for Bulgaria.
Aaron Ramsey is still out with a broken leg.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-2 Notts County
Some will be disappointed that the League One side were unable to overturn the Premier League side, despite taking them to extra time after normal time finished 1-1. But Brentford had already knocked out Everton. It wasn’t going to happen to any other top division sides… was it? Well, not in this match.
Wayne Hennessey was in goal for Wolves (so it was a good thing they weren’t knocked out really, Wales’ Number One needs confidence) and he didn’t only do his job defensively (even the apoplectic Mick McCarthy conceded that a save from Wayne had stopped the game from going to penalties), he also got the assist for Wolves’ third goal. David Jones was on the bench but Dave Edwards was out with an ankle injury.
Ben Davies played the full match for Notts County. He nearly got an assist in the second minute but the scorer was offside.
