Doncaster Rovers 1-2 Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth got a late winner to deny play-off hopefuls Doncaster any points at all. A late play-off run is still possible although not as likely as Plymouth staying up. Plymouth are now just three points from safety – an amazing achievement.
Gareth Roberts came close to another of his brilliant goals for Doncaster but it didn’t go in and he was substituted late on, just a few minutes before Plymouth scored their winner. He’s been substituted late twice in the last three matches. John Oster managed to get the ball on top of the net but that doesn’t count.
It was hoped that Carl Fletcher would recover from a knee injury in time to play for Plymouth but it wasn’t to be. Carl has said all along that Plymouth go down – and now, I have to say I believe him.
Ipswich Town 2-1 Reading
Ipswich might have been one of the last teams in the league to win a match but they now only have slightly more chance of going down than they do of making the play-offs. Reading’s play-off hopes took a bit of a knock with this defeat but they do have two games in hand over the teams they’re hoping to overtake and a lot of teams would lose if they were reduced to 10 men after half an hour.
Simon Church was brought off the bench after 73 minutes as 10-man Reading tried to fight back from 2-0 down.
Middlesbrough 1-1 Crystal Palace
Both teams really wanted a win, if for completely different reasons. Neither got it, but all is not lost. Leicester City’s struggles mean that Middlesbrough aren’t quite out of the race for a play-off spot while Palace are only one point away from safety.
Rhys Williams played the first 58 minutes for Boro and it looks as though he was injured. I hope I'm wrong.
Danny Coyne was again on the bench.
Peterborough United 2-3 Newcastle United
This fixture could have clinched relegation for the home side and promotion for the away side, but other results didn’t go their way. But it would be very difficult to imagine either of these teams being in the Championship next season. (There, now maybe I’ve jinxed it.)
Peterborough were still without the injured Craig Morgan (ankle).
