Cardiff City 2-1 Swansea City
A stoppage time Cardiff City goal gave the home side the points. Cardiff remain in 4th place, eight points away from 7th, and look certainties for the play-offs but Swansea in 5th still look vulnerable and could be 7th after their next game if results don’t go their way.
Swansea took the lead in the 28th minute with a goal originally credited to Ashley Williams, who certainly celebrated as though he’d got the final touch, but replays suggested he didn’t really. But Cardiff equalised just before half time, then grabbed a late, late winner.
Beating Swansea is always a good feeling but perhaps the best news for Cardiff was the return of Joe Ledley. The midfielder had operations on both hips just after Christmas and wasn’t expected to play again this season but he was on the bench for the derby and made his appearance in the 63rd minute.
Darcy Blake managed to overcome a neck injury to keep his place in the starting line-up and did well again for Swansea, Adam Matthews, the player who replaced the injured Darcy in the last match, also got a start. Adam and late substitute Aaron Wildig both played a bit part in the move that led to Cardiff’s winner. Aaron Morris made his first appearance on Cardiff's bench since his return from a loan spell at Oxford City.
Ashley Williams was Swansea’s only Welsh starter but Cardiff-born David Cotterill came off the bench after 69 minutes and nearly scored a spectacular goal from a free kick. David has never played for Cardiff but his wife and son were abused by Cardiff fans during the last derby so he wouldn’t let them go to this match. There’s nothing wrong with being a passionate football fan but abusing someone’s family because of the father’s job (because that's pretty much what they're doing) is too much. David Cornell and Joe Allen were also on the bench.
Coventry City 0-1 Derby County
Another day, another derby win for, er, Derby, who are eight points clear from the relegation zone and looking pretty much safe. Millwall were once relegated on 52 points but you’d expect Derby’s 51 to be adequate. They’re only a point behind Coventry now.
Coventry were without Freddy Eastwood, who has gone and injured himself again. This time, it’s his back. I told you there was a lot of it about. Robbie Savage played the full match for Derby County.
