Barnsley 1-0 Crystal Palace
Barnsley collected their first win in twelve games but they were playing Crystal Palace, who haven’t won away for quite a while. It was true that the only player to get on the scoresheet was a Palace player but it didn’t go into the right net.
Andy Dorman was on the pitch for most of the match. Lewis Price sat on the bench.
Derby County 1-2 Cardiff City
A common nickname bestowed on the Welsh is ‘sheep-shaggers’ – and that’s kind of what they did to the Rams in this match. Derby didn’t play that badly and Cardiff were quite lucky it didn’t finish up as a draw but Cardiff did hold on and they took the three points.
Robbie Savage cancelled his midweek book signing in Cardiff and he probably wasn’t at his best here, playing 70 minutes and picking up what he feels is an undeserved yellow card (which I’m sure won’t be his last). But he was still one of Derby’s best players. Gareth Roberts played in defence for Derby. It wasn’t a great day for him but he has had a foot injury.
Darcy Blake passed a late fitness test after back spasms kept him out of Wales’ match against Luxembourg. He played the full game for Cardiff and was part of the committed defence that prevented Derby from equalising. Adam Matthews came off the bench for Cardiff in the sixth minute of first-half extra time. Not many players do that! Jason Koumas missed the match due to a virus.
Doncaster Rovers 1-1 Bristol City
Imagine how badly Bristol City would be doing if they didn’t have the England goalkeeper. Of course, it doesn’t help that all their Welsh players are injured. Doncaster played well and were pretty unlucky not to snatch three points at the end.
Gavin Williams could have doubled Bristol City’s lead but he decided to shoot instead of pass. But no doubt if he’d passed and his team-mate had missed, the world would be berating him for not shooting.
Doncaster were without John Oster, who is still recovering from a knee operation but captain Brian Stock played well.
Bristol City defenders Lewin Nyatanga (knee), Christian Ribeiro (knee) and James Wilson (thigh) were all out, as was striker Sam Vokes (hamstring) who joined Bristol City on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
