Gillingham 1-1 Cheltenham Town
A failure to win League Two for Gillingham would apparently be just that – a failure. But if they want to win the League, they probably ought to be able to beat Cheltenham, who are expected to struggle. But who knows? Cheltenham have been in League One already and they were defensively excellent in this match and unlucky really not to win.
Josh Low played the full match for Cheltenham.
Rotherham United 2-1 Lincoln City
Rotherham are also going for promotion but they needed a late winner in order to beat Lincoln, who were also predicted to struggle. But it doesn’t matter whether the win comes late or early, the points are still the same.
Mark Bradley made his Rotherham debut as a 76th-minute substitute.
Shrewsbury Town 3-1 Bradford City
Bradford are a former Premier League side who really shouldn’t be in League Two and that was exactly what they looked like when they took the lead in the 24th minute. But it didn’t last.
Shrewsbury’s Tom Bradshaw was on the bench. Bradford’s Michael Flynn was hoping to return from a stomach injury in time to play but it wasn’t to be.
Southend United 1-1 Stockport County
The two teams who finished in the bottom two places of League One last year shared the points in the opening game of the new season.
Owain fon Williams was back in goal for Stockport after being replaced at the end of last season. He played well and looked confident again which was good to see. Firstly because I want to see him do well and secondly because they haven’t got another goalkeeper!
Stevenage 2-2 Macclesfield Town
Stevenage make an unbeaten start to their first ever League season. They took a while to settle but once they did they looked a good side and they did well to snatch a late equaliser.
Sam Wedgbury played the first 80 minutes for Macclesfield. They were winning until he went off.
Torquay United 3-0 Northampton Town
Torquay stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches with a comprehensive victory over Northampton.
Paul Walker was left on Northampton’s bench as Ian Sampson felt he was too inexperienced for the League. I wonder if this result will encourage him to change his mind.
Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 Morecambe
Wycombe wanted to go straight back up again and results like this will only help. Manager Gary Waddock said Morecambe made things difficult for Wycombe but maybe he was just being kind.
Darren Moss started for Morecambe. He was substituted in the 79th minute but only so they could bring an extra striker on.
