Newcastle United 0-2 Blackpool
The phrase ‘Tangerine Dream’ comes not, as I thought, from those who use too much tan (or even just the right amount of tan, in my case) but from the Beatles’ song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. This song is commonly thought to refer to LSD and the Blackpool fans must wonder at times if they themselves are having some sort of hallucination (though only from prescription drugs, I’m sure). Blackpool in the Premier League, in the Champions’ League places… that can’t be real!
But it is real. And although Newcastle weren’t at their best, Blackpool worked hard and deserved their three points. They are also the first team (other than Newcastle) to win at St James’s Park in the league for over a year.
Neal Eardley and David Vaughan both played the full match for Spain… I mean Blackpool. Rob Edwards was on the bench.
Blackpool dedicated their win to youth coach Gary Parkinson, who suffered a stroke last week. He’s now off the critical list which is encouraging news although he’s still very ill. I’m sure he’s in many people’s thoughts and prayers right now.
West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur
The yo-yo club took on the Champions’ League team and at times you wouldn’t have known which was which. At other times, you could have been forgiven for thinking it was West Brom.
Boaz Myhill was on the bench for West Brom and Tottenham were probably quite glad. The last time Spurs faced Bo, he just would not let them score.
Gareth Bale played at left back again and although he might have been able to stop West Brom’s equaliser, he was one of Tottenham’s best players and was solid in defence.
West Ham United 1-3 Chelsea
Let’s look on the bright side. West Ham are the only team to have scored against Chelsea this season. And they only lost by two goals. Not many teams have done that this season.
Danny Gabbidon didn’t return from a hamstring injury for West Ham. Jack Collison is still out with a knee injury.
