Bolton Wanderers 2-2 Manchester United
Manchester United were unable to take advantage of Arsenal’s and Chelsea’s defeats when they could only draw with Bolton.
Michael Owen came off the bench to score Manchester United’s equaliser and claim a point for this team. Ryan Giggs could also have got on the scoresheet but Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen saved his shot and Ryan was unable to make amends, a hamstring injury forcing him off after 53 minutes.
Sam Ricketts played the full match in defence for Bolton – his first league start of the season.
Newcastle United 1-2 Stoke City
Stoke fought back to grab an away win against Newcastle, who were quite unlucky to be on the losing side. Stoke were poor in the first half and didn’t look like they’d win the match but Tony Pulis presumably had some choice words at half-time.
Danny Collins and Ryan Shawcross both played in defence for Stoke and played a big part in preventing Newcastle from scoring a second.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-2 Aston Villa
Gerard Houllier won for the first time as Aston Villa manager with a victory over near neighbours Wolves. After Wolves equalised, the home side looked the stronger but none other than Emile Heskey came to Villa’s rescue.
David Jones and Dave Edwards both started for Wolves – it was the latter’s first league start of the season. Wayne Hennessey was on the bench.
James Collins looked back to his best in defence for Aston Villa.
