Bristol City 0-3 Millwall
Bristol City were expected to win this. Millwall have only just been promoted. And of course, Bristol City have the England goalkeeper.
But Millwall had Wales’ new star striker which was obviously an advantage. Steve Morison didn’t score but he got an assist as Millwall put in a very good performance, despite being reduced to ten men after just over an hour. Bristol City also had a player sent of fin stoppage time. They passed well, moved well, dominated the match and although they scored some goals from rebounds, it’s a positive that they were in the right place to take advantage of them. You get Premier League players who can’t do that.
Bristol City were missing their three injured Welsh defenders but Gavin Williams and loanee Sam Vokes made appearances from the bench.
Burnley 1-0 Nottingham Forest
Burnley are hoping to get back into the Premier League and they certainly made a great start, beating fellow promotion contenders Nottingham Forest
Chris Gunter and Robert Earnshaw both played the full match for Forest. Neither were at their best – although Rob came close to scoring and Chris should have got an assist - but this match should warm them up nicely for the game against Luxembourg.
Coventry City 2-0 Portsmouth
Portsmouth would probably love to get promoted again but so would Coventry and on this showing, they do look a stronger side.
Freddy Eastwood scored both goals for Coventry and although the goalkeeper should probably have prevented the first, his second, an acrobatic header, was very fine. If he keeps it up, maybe a return to the Wales squad isn’t out of the question.
Crystal Palace 3-2 Leicester City
Palace were 3-0 up at half-time and looking strong but new manager Paolo Sousa must have given the Leicester players a rocket up their backsides because that was what it looked like. Leicester managed to bring the score back to 3-2 with Andy King scoring the first of their goals after 57 minutes.
New signing Andy Dorman was in Palace’s starting line-up and did well in his English League debut. New goalkeeper Lewis Price was on the bench.
Leicester’s Nicky Adams wasn’t anywhere to be seen. He wants to stay and fight for his place and even played right back in pre-season but it looks like his manager had other ideas.
