Preston North End 0-2 Doncaster Rovers
Doncaster were in the Blue Square Premier not that long ago but they’re looking completely comfortable in the Championship and deserved their win over the team who quite often gets into the play-offs.
New signing Craig Morgan played in defence for Preston but Paul Parry, still building up his fitness, was left on the bench.
I was worried Doncaster would struggle now Gareth Roberts has gone to Derby and John Oster, also excellent last season, is out with a knee injury. Doncaster did have Brian Stock though and it’s not just me who thinks he was brilliant.
Reading 1-2 Scunthorpe United
I had a good idea who was going to win this. I bet a lot of people had a good idea. But we were all wrong. I still think Scunthorpe will be relegated while Reading will be promotion contenders. But they didn’t look it and I know why.
It’s possible that Reading manager Brian McDermott was simply resting Simon Church so he was in optimal condition for Wales v Luxembourg but I think that if a player has scored four times in pre-season, you really want him to play more than ten minutes in your opening game.
Hal Robson-Kanu was on Reading’s bench. But I’m not going to make a big fuss about that. Not this time.
