Peterborough United 3-0 Bristol Rovers
Many League One predictions have included Peterborough in the play-offs and I thought nooooo. But now I think mayyyyybe. Peterborough were on fine form and Swindon seemed to be having a play-off hangover.
Arron Davies started on the bench for Peterborough but made his debut after an hour against the side he has every reason to feel grateful to. They might have cancelled his loan and sent him back to Nottingham Forest but they also agreed to sign him on non-contract terms so he could achieve his heart’s desire and play for Yeovil Town on loan, with a view to signing for them in the summer. The Yeovil move didn’t materialise – but without Brighton’s help, Arron probably wouldn’t have been playing against them today.
Byron Anthony played for Bristol Rovers with Ben Swallow on the bench.
Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Dagenham & Redbridge
The pub team from Essex is in the same division as Sheffield Wednesday. Who cares if they lost the match? Who cares if they’re probably going to get relegated? They’re in League One and they’re going to enjoy it. And despite the result, manager John Still looked pretty happy. And Dagenham did play well.
Tony Roberts was in goal for Dagenham and put in a good performance. The Guardian said he was less then sprightly but I bet he’s a lot more sprightly than most of them.
Southampton 0-1 Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth probably needed something to cheer them up after last season and beating favourites Southampton should have done it.
Southampton had no Welsh players in their squad. Lloyd James was released so he couldn’t be and Ryan Doble has only just signed his first professional contract although he did get onto the bench a few times last year. Anthony Pulis isn’t a first-tem regular either.
Carl Fletcher played the full match for the winning side.
Walsall 1-2 Milton Keynes Dons
Both teams finished in surprising positions last season, MK Dons in mid-table and Walsall above them. But it was MK Dons who finished on top this time, despite having a 29-year old manager, who almost shares a name with former Welsh international Carl Robinson, now at the New York Bulls which annoyingly I only found out about after his team had played against Tottenham in a friendly. Karl with a K is young enough to be the son of midfielder Dietmar Hamann.
Sean Geddes was on the bench for Walsall.
Jermaine Easter was originally credited with MK Dons’ first goal but then it was taken away from him. But it’s a compliment that if a goal was scored, BBC Sport think, oh it’s that brilliant Welshman Jermaine.
Yeovil Town 2-1 Leyton Orient
Both teams could struggle again this season but it was Yeovil who took all three points, after scoring two of the goals.
Assistant manager Nathan Jones played the full match after the scheduled player presumably picked up an injury.
