Cardiff City 2-1 Doncaster Rovers
Cardiff couldn’t equal their 6-0 thrashing of Bristol City but as they were adjusting to the loss of Joe Ledley, who was set to have his first hip operation on Friday, I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to take 2-1.
It could very easily have been 1-1 after Gareth Roberts scored his second goal in five games – another excellent long-range goal r – with the assist coming from John Oster, who must have passed his fitness test. And so must Brian Stock, who nearly scored as well. Brian got a yellow card but everyone gets those and the important thing is that he was able to complete another 90 minutes.
Adam Matthews also played 90 minutes, but for Cardiff in his case, with Darcy Blake coming off the bench in the second half (I think he should have been on from the start but I’m not the manager).
Aaron Wildig missed the match with a back problem and it looks as though he will not be able to represent Wales as he’s only a thirty-second Welsh (if I added that up right) and you have to be a quarter Welsh at least. And presumably even though I think he’s been playing for Cardiff since he was a child, his education must have taken place in England. Maybe they’ll invent another rule that allows him to play for Wales – like he probably would count as a home-grown Cardiff City player and as Cardiff are based in Wales they could make up a new qualification rule based around that.
Aaron is still Welsh to me but obviously that won’t be any help to him at all.
Coventry City 1-1 Blackpool
Freddy Eastwood was only fit enough for the bench and although he came on after 75 minutes and managed to help inspire Coventry to an equaliser although they were unable to find a winner. Rob Edwards returned to the starting line-up alongside David Vaughan, who came close to a goal.
Daniel Nardiello on the bench but Neal Eardley was missing due to injury.
Crystal Palace 2-0 Peterborough United
Crystal Palace might be hovering above the relegation zone after having 10 points deducted for going into administration but even without Victor Moses, they didn’t play like a club in the relegation zone. Peterborough of course won’t be the sternest test of their abilities and they were without centre back Craig Morgan, who served the final match of his three-match suspension. But the signs so far are certainly encouraging.
