Championship Results 30th January Part 2

Derby County 1-0 Nottingham Forest
Derby County managed a shock win over Nottingham Forest, bringing their long unbeaten run to an end. Forest striker Robert Earnshaw faced his former club but didn’t manage to score although he came close. Right back Chris Gunter was brilliant until the 90th minute when he became involved in an argument with Derby’s Jay McEveley. Robbie Savage – who at least before the match thought Nottingham Forest were the best team in the Championship - says the pre-match huddle helped them to win the game. I personally think Robbie helped a lot too.

Leicester City 0-0 Newcastle United

Andy King was restored to the starting line-up as they faced league leaders Newcastle. He wasn’t able to get another goal but he still played very well and you could say Leicester were unlucky not to score as Andy certainly terrorised their defence.

Middlesbrough 0-0 Bristol City
Danny Coyne played well as Middlesbrough kept a clean sheet and Bristol City did considerably better against Middlesbrough than they did in their last game. Boro, who are still missing Rhys Williams (pelvis), might be quite glad with the point after going down to ten men on 56 minutes. The play-offs certainly aren’t out of the question but the automatic promotion they seemed to have a chance of under Gareth Southgate really does seem impossible now.
Lewin Nyatanga was back in the starting line-up for Bristol City and he kept a clean sheet too but there was still no sign of Gavin Williams or James Wilson.

Preston North End 2-0 Ipswich Town

Preston got a really useful win over Ipswich despite the absence of midfielder Paul Parry, who has a knee injury.

Reading 1-0 Barnsley
Still no goals for Reading’s Simon Church since he scored against Liverpool but new manager Brian McDermott has praised the way he’s been working with fellow forward Shane Long (and who would you rather score against if you had the choice, Liverpool or Barnsley?). However Reading are still three points adrift of safety.

Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Plymouth Argyle

Plymouth actually took the lead in the 24th minute but before the minute was up, Sheffield Wednesday had got an equaliser and they went on to win the game. Captain Carl Fletcher thinks Plymouth can survive but they’ve got a lot of work to do.

Watford P-P Swansea City

This match was postponed as parts of their pitch was frozen and the undersoil heating wasn’t working.

West Bromwich Albion 3-1 Sheffield United

Ched Evans stayed on the bench as Sheffield United struggled against automatic promotion contenders West Brom. Sheffield United weren’t at their best and West Brom could have won by more. But luckily Sheffield United don’t have to play them every week.
