Arsenal v Manchester Un[ted
Arsenal still have loads of injuries but Aaron Ramsey is fit to start although some reports say Samir Nasri could replace him. Ryan Giggs is fine too. Manchester United might want to rest him again but they are playing against Arsenal and Ryan was the best player the last time the two sides met. (So really, I think I want him to be left out…)
Manchester City v Portsmouth
Craig Bellamy should be starting. He deserves it and Robinho’s gone on loan so Manchester City really need him. Probably even against Portsmouth.
He’s not Welsh and he's definitely not one of my favourite footballers but it will be good to see Emmanuel Adebayor making is 100th Premier League start. What happened in Angola was terrible and I hope he’s doing okay. I’m shocked though that Togo have been banned from competing in the next two African Cup of Nations tournaments. Maybe it’s the usual punishment for teams who withdraw but these are very exceptional circumstances. Togo’s withdrawal is completely understandable (and it wasn’t even the choice of the team but the country’s government). And now they’re being punished.

League Two Fixtures 30th January Part 2
Northampton Town v Burton Albion
Northampton’s Peter Gilbert was substituted early in Northampton’s last match but he doesn’t seem to be on their injury list. Burton’s Tony James also seems to be fine which is good news as Burton's injury crisis has been worse than Northampton's.
Port Vale v Hereford United
Lewis Haldane is no longer on loan from Bristol Rovers but he will be playing – he is now officially a Port Vale player, just like Gareth Owen. Craig Davies however is still a loanee. Ryan Green definitely won’t play for Hereford after a hernia operation but Darren Jones and Ryan Valentine are fit as far as I know.
Rotherham United v Macclesfield Town
Rotherham are continuing their assault on the play-offs so Macclesfield’s Matthew Tipton could find himself on the losing side. But I hope not. (If it was up to me, all the Wales players would win every week. But that wouldn’t happen. And even if it did Manchester City would probably buy the lot of them and then Arsenal would never win a trophy ever again.)
Shrewsbury Town v Accrington Stanley
Will Richards could start for Shrewsbury, who have played more games than most of they teams around them in the League but even automatic promotion looks far from impossible.
Torquay United v Bradford City
Michael Flynn has defended Bradford manager Stuart McCall, saying that it’s the players’ fault, not the manager’s, that Bradford have been struggling lately. His team-mates need t cut out silly mistakes and start winning!

League Two Fixtures 30th January Part 1
Cheltenham Town v Darlington
Cheltenham probably aren’t seriously worried about going down, not with Darlington and Grimsby in the same League as them. But this is a game they definitely need to win. Josh Low and David Pipe will probably both be in Cheltenham’s midfield. Cheltenham manager Mark Yates has discussed with possibility of extending David’s loan with the club’s chairman.
Crewe Alexandra v Bournemouth
Bournemouth have signed Norwich’s Rhoys Wiggins on a 28-day emergency loan – he must have recovered from his knee injury then! Rhoys spent six months on loan at Bournemouth last season so most of the squad will know him already. But Bournemouth still only have 13 fit professional players available. Joe Partington is out with a back injury.
Lincoln City v Dagenham & Redbridge
Lincoln have a very long injury list so maybe they regret sending Anthony Pulis back to Southampton. Or maybe not, he doesn’t seem to have been that popular. So Dag & Red’s goalkeeper Tony Roberts could get another clean sheet.
Morecambe v Chesterfield
Darren Moss will be on the home bench while Mark Crossley will probably be on the away one but Chesterfield’s Robert Page could get a game. Mark thinks that Chesterfield still have a chance of making the play-offs. As they’re only one point outside the play-offs at the moment (albeit having played more games than the teams immediately above them) I can only agree.

League One Fixtures 30th January Part 3
Yeovil Town v Huddersfield Town
Yeovil have signed Norwich’s Owain Tudur Jones on loan – he will be sharing the midfield with Shaun MacDonald, another loanee, with defender Nathan Jones just behind them.
But contrary to reports, Yeovil have not signed Arron Davies. Arron has already played for Nottingham Forest and Brighton this season and is not allowed to play competitive football for another team. I really wish Forest hadn’t released him now, they should have known this would happen.
However, the rule is a bit confusing. Christian Ribeiro is a Swansea player who has been on their bench for League games. He has also played on loan for Stockport and is now on loan at Colchester. True, I don’t think he’s actually played for Swansea whereas Arron did play for Forest. But Christian has appeared in matchday squads for League matches whereas Arron only played for Forest in the Cup. Maybe this isn’t totally relevant but it does seem a bit double-standardy (not that I’m saying Christian should be taken away from Colchester!).

League One Fixtures 30th January Part 2
Milton Keynes Dons v Exeter City
Jermaine Easter is hoping to return to the starting line-up to face Exeter. MK Dons will need his goals more than ever as loan striker Jason Puncheon could be sold to Southampton. Richard Duffy, who has admitted Exeter are in a relegation battle, will be fighting for their survival, possibly alongside Rob Edwards if he recovers from a facial injury in time. Andy Marriott will be Exeter’s reserve goalkeeper but as loan striker Stuart Fleetwood has been playing for the reserves, he might again be omitted from the squad.
Oldham Athletic v Brentford
Joe Jacobson will be in defence for Oldham, who have made a surprise appearance in the relegation zone Technically it’s not really a surprise as I did see it coming but it’s not what I was expecting from them at the start of the season. Lewis Price will probably be on the bench for Brentford. Lewis played in goal for Brentford’s reserves as they drew 0-0 with Ipswich.
Southampton v Stockport County
Southampton’s Lloyd James could be out with an ankle knock – he limped out of Southampton’s last match just 31 minutes after opening the scoring. Stockport seem to have quite enjoyed their two consecutive draws so goalkeeper Owain fon Williams will be doing all he can to ensure that Stockport get as many points as they can.

League One Fixtures 30th January Part 1
Brighton & Hove Albion v Millwall
Brighton are out of the relegation zone but now Andrew Crofts’ side must take on Millwall, who are pushing for the play-offs again. Brighton manager Gus Poyet has set Andrew a target of 10 league goals this season. He’s already scored six, five of them since Poyet joined the club. Kenny Jackett will probably keep Jason Price on the bench though.
Bristol Rovers v Wycombe Wanderers
Byron Anthony should keep his place in Bristol Rovers’ defence after their win over Hartlepool. Especially if he’s a good boy and signs his new contract. Ben Swallow also has a good chance of starting.
Carlisle United v Leyton Orient
Orient are expected to be unchanged following their victory over Charlton so that means a start for loanee Nicky Adams.
Charlton Athletic v Tranmere Rovers
Charlton’s Grant Basey will be hoping to avoid a second consecutive defeat to a side in the relegation battle. But Tranmere and Ash Taylor, who scored in their last match, will not be making things easy for them.
Gillingham v Walsall
Walsall still really haven’t recovered from their enforced winter break but Rhys Weston feels Gillingham is a good place to put this right and give them their first League win since 1st December to keep them in touch with the team above them. Walsall play nine games between now and the end of February. Mark Bradley should also be in Walsall’s team.
Leeds United v Colchester United
Leeds are stuttering and Colchester have proved their 7-1 thrashing of Norwich on the opening day wasn’t a complete fluke. Christian Ribeiro is perhaps enjoying the winning feeling nearly as much as Gareth Bale (Christian’s last loan was at Stockport so he can’t remember when he last won a game) but a groin injury means he’ll only keep his place in Colchester’s defence if he passes a fitness test.

Championship Fixtures 30th January Part 3
Reading v Barnsley
Simon Church will be hoping to be back in Reading’s starting line-up so he can score some goals and get them away from the relegation places.
Sheffield Wednesday v Plymouth Argyle
Carl Fletcher thinks Plymouth can avoid relegation from the Championship. A win over Sheffield Wednesday, who are still close enough for the match to count as a six-pointer, would certainly help.
Watford v Swansea City
Jonathan North’s chances of featuring in Watford’s squad were probably never that high but his chances of being in the squad for this game are absolutely impossible as the young goalkeeper has signed for Oxford City on loan.
Ashley Williams, Joe Allen and David Cotterill are all in with a chance of getting a start for Swansea as they try to consolidate their place in the play-off zone. If they don't start, they'll be on the bench with David Cornell.
Rangers are said to be tracking Swansea's Ashley Richards.
West Bromwich Albion v Sheffield United
Sheffield United are now only six points behind West Brom and who knows, maybe Ched Evans will get Sheffield Utd the winning goal. He really deserves it as he’s worked really hard for his team and played well. The only thing he doesn’t do is score goals.

Championship Fixtures 30th January Part 2
Derby County v Nottingham Forest
Robbie Savage’s Derby are the latest team to try to end the unbeaten League run of Nottingham Forest. And the fact it’s a local derby might prove to be the incentive they need. Robbie thinks Arsenal and Manchester United will have to finish above Chelsea to win the League. Well… yes, Robbie.
Chris Gunter will almost certainly keep his place in defence and I’ll be shocked if Robert Earnshaw doesn’t start after scoring two goals and then refraining from taking a penalty against Queen’s Park Rangers.
Leicester City v Newcastle United
Leicester are hoping to get back on course for the play-offs but Newcastle probably aren’t the ideal team to face when you want a win. Andy King has been on the bench for recent games but maybe he’ll be back in the team this week.
Middlesbrough v Bristol City
Both Middlesbrough’s players and fans seem happier now Danny Coyne is between the sticks but Bristol City will be out to bounce back from their 6-0 defeat to Cardiff and Middlesbrough are nothing if not inconsistent. Boro’s Rhys Williams is doubtful with a pelvic injury.
Bristol City’s Lewin Nyatanga was on the bench against Cardiff but you wouldn’t blame the City management team for thinking he might have been just slightly missed against Cardiff. Gavin Williams was surprisingly omitted from the squad in the last game so he could be injured.
Preston North End v Ipswich Town
Paul Parry will be out for another two months with a knee injury while Ipswich’s Ben Thatcher and Troy Brown have been playing for the reserves.

Championship Fixtures 30th January Part 1
Cardiff City v Doncaster Rovers
Cardiff will be hoping to build on Tuesday’s stunning victory over Bristol City – but they’ll have to do it without Joe Ledley, who is due to have his first hip operation today. Adam Matthews recovered from his groin injury in time to play in the last match and there was another good showing from Darcy Blake, this time from the bench. I would start both of them but I’m biased. Aaron Wildig failed a fitness test on his back injury on Tuesday but the fact he had a fitness test at all shows he’s not that far off.
John Oster and Brian Stock missed Doncaster’s last match m John with a hamstring problem and Brian with a twisted ankle but Brian is certain to return. He is also hoping he has a future playing for Wales. John on the other hand is rumoured to have been arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour and could be looking for a new club as a result.
Gareth Roberts should play for Doncaster as he’s been a good boy.
Coventry City v Blackpool
Coventry will be hoping Freddy Eastwood is able to return to the side after a knee injury ruled him out last weekend’s game against Watford but his chances of passing a fitness test are far from certain. Neal Eardley, who was in the Championship team of the Week, and David Vaughan should keep their places in Blackpool’s side and after getting an assist in his last game, a start for Daniel Nardiello doesn’t seem impossible. Rob Edwards has been on the bench since returning from suspension but he’s probably due a start.
Crystal Palace v Peterborough United
Crystal Palace have had a ten-point deduction after going into administration and are now just one place above the relegation zone. Peterborough badly need points and will be doing their best to take advantage of Palace’s situation. They’ll be without Craig Morgan, who is still suspended, but Palace will be without Victor Moses, who needs to be sold to raise funds.

Premier Legue Fixtures 30th January
Birmingham v Tottenham Hotspur
Gareth Bale deserves to start after his recent Man of the Match performances and I really hope he continues his winning run. Even though he does play for Tottenham.
Fulham v Aston Villa
After two great performances from the substitutes’ bench for Fulham, Simon Davies probably deserves a start and is in with a chance of getting one but I’m not sure I’d risk it just yet. James Collins has been a very important part of Villa’s excellent defence and ought to keep his place. James has refuted Arsene Wenger’s claims that Villa play ‘long ball’. I think Arsene is a very intelligent guy but I have to agree with James this time (because he’s right, not because he’s Welsh). Not that Villa never use long ball but I’d say they’re more of a counterattacking side really.
Hull City v Wolverhampton Wanderers
If Boaz Myhill can play against Wolves like he did against Tottenham, Hull only need worry about scoring goals. But with Jimmy Bullard not due to return until next week, this could be difficult. Wayne Hennessey will probably be on the bench, depriving me of the chance to see Wales’ goalkeepers up against each other. Sam Vokes should be on the bench as well although Mick McCarthy has dropped a strong hint that one of his substitute strikers could be in line to start. Dave Edwards has had a setback from his ankle injury and will be out for another two months.
Liverpool v Bolton Wanderers
Bolton probably got a bit worried when they looked at the fixture list and saw they were playing Liverpool. When they remembered how Liverpool have been playing lately, they probably felt a bit better. But it still won’t be an easy game although if Sam Ricketts keeps his place in Bolton’s starting line-up, it can only help.
West Ham United v Blackburn Rovers
West Ham are another side who badly need points and Jack Collison will certainly be doing his best to ensure it happens. He hasn’t scored for a while but hardly a game goes by without him testing the goalkeeper. Danny Gabbidon is still out for West Ham. Jason Brown should be on the bench for Blackburn.
Wigan Athletic v Everton
Probably only a major injury crisis will see Jason Koumas return to the squad. And as Cardiff can’t afford him, he only has another three days to find a new club.

Carling Cup Result 27th January
Manchester United 3-1 Manchester City (4-3 on aggregate)
Manchester City are out of the Carling Cup whilst Manchester United could win it for the second year running. It was a tense and exciting game that so nearly went to extra time – the final goal, in the second minute of stoppage time, seemed to come pretty much out of nowhere. I wasn’t sure who I wanted to win this but as I don’t know any Manchester City supporters (or I don’t know anyone who will admit to being a Manchester City supporter) I think this was probably the result I was looking for.
Ryan Giggs provided an excellent assist for Wayne Rooney’s winning goal (as a Wales fan, I think Ryan should take a lot of the credit but no doubt some will disagree) and City’s Craig Bellamy provided the assist for Carlos Tevez’ goal – another nice piece of skill that meant extra time was looking more and more likely.
There was one horrible moment though where Man Utd fans threw a coin and a champagne bottle at Craig Bellamy. I know he can be annoying but that is no reason to assault him. Because that’s what it is, assault.

League Two Result 27th January
Burton Albion 1-0 Lincoln City
Defensive crisis? What defensive crisis? Burton’s back line, which included Tony James, managed to get themselves three points and a clean sheet when they played Lincoln.

Premier League Results 27th January
Aston Villa 0-0 Arsenal
Yes, I can just about bring myself to write the result of this one.
James Collins played brilliantly in Villa’s scarily solid defence. They really did play very very well – it was just a shame it was such a dull game because top-class defending can be great to watch. James was also one of a number of Villa players who could have scored.
I’m still slightly disappointed with the result though. It was good to see Aaron Ramsey back in the starting line-up and he was always looking to create something. He did make one excellent tackle but unfortunately it was on Tomas Rosicky. He’s still amazing for a nineteen year old though, even one of Arsenal’s nineteen year olds.
Blackburn 2-1 Wigan Athletic
Nothing exciting to report on the Jason front. Jason Brown stayed on the bench for Blackburn and Jason Koumas wasn’t in Wigan’s squad. My dad thinks Blackburn keeper Paul Robinson isn’t good enough and I was only too happy to suggest Blackburn replace him with Jason Brown. But Dad… Blackburn did actually win. Wigan looked disorganised and they seriously need another good creative midfielder. Someone like, I don’t know, Jason Koumas.

League Two Results 26th January
Chesterfield 0-1 Rotherham United
Rotherham have had a number of matches called off recently but it doesn’t seem to have affected their form at all. Chesterfield probably thought they’d nabbed a point but then Rotherham went and scored in the last minute. Robert Page played the full match for Chesterfield with Mark Crossley on the bench.
Dagenham & Redbridge 0-3 Notts County
There was no Cup hangover for Notts County as a strong away win put them ahead of Dag & Red on goal difference. Tony Roberts was the Daggers’ goalkeeper but he did make some good saves at least the first goal sounds like it was pretty much unstoppable.
Darlington 1-2 Northampton Town
Northampton came back from 1-0 down to beat bottom club Darlington. Peter Gilbert played the first 75 minutes and I just hope he wasn’t substituted due to injury.
Macclesfield Town 2-2 Morecambe
Macclesfield are ten points ahead of the relegation places and probably safe but all the same, the point was probably very welcome. Darren Moss was again on the bench for Morecambe.
Rochdale 0-0 Port Vale
Port Vale did well to hold league leaders Rochdale to a draw which meant a clean sheet for Gareth Owen but loan strikers Lewis Haldane and Craig Davies were probably more interested in scoresheets than clean sheets and unfortunately neither of them got on it. Lewis probably should have won his team a penalty but the referee must have been looking the other way.

League One Results 26th January Part 2
Stockport County 1-1 Brighton & Hove Albion
Owain fon Williams looked on course for his second consecutive clean sheet for Stockport as they got their first win for God knows how long. But it wasn’t to be and it was all Andrew Crofts’ fault. The Brighton’s 90th minute equaliser ensured that while Stockport kept their unbeaten run going, they were denied a win.
Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Yeovil Town
Ash Taylor put Tranmere 2-0 up as they edged further towards 20th place. Tranmere are now just three points outside the relegation zone so maybe an escape is possible after all. And if they hadn’t conceded a last-minute penalty, they could have ended with a clean sheet as well. Nathan Jones and Shaun MacDonald both played the full match for Yeovil.
Walsall 1-2 Norwich City
Walsall took the lead in the 35th minute but their enforced winter break doesn’t seem to have done them any favours and they ended up losing to Norwich, who are after all top of the league. Rhys Weston was back from injury and he and Mark Bradley both played the full match. None of Norwich’s Welsh players made it into the squad.

League One Results 26th January Part 1
Brentford 1-1 Southampton
Lloyd James put Southampton ahead with a great goal in the fourth minute, only for Brentford to equalise in the 83rd minute. It’s funny how a team’s league form often goes downhill after they’ve beaten a team from a higher division in the Cup.
Lewis Price was on the bench for Brentford. Their other loan goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny from Arsenal has asked to extend his loan but it’s up to Arsene Wenger. Arsene thiks Wojciech will be Arsenal’s No. 1 eventually but I doubt he’ll have any chances this season.
Colchester United 2-0 Milton Keynes Dons
If you’d told me about this result at the start of the season, I wouldn’t have believed you. Yet Colchester are looking likely for the play-offs and although MK Dons aren’t far off, they aren’t having the season some might have expected after doing well last season – although to be fair they did have a player sent off just after half-time.
Colchester were forced to make a substitution in the 43rd minute when Christian Ribeiro suffered a groin injury but they hung on for the win. Jermaine Easter was dropped to MK Dons’ bench and he didn’t make an appearance as a substitute.
Exeter City 2-3 Carlisle United
Exeter’s hopes of building on their win over giant-killers Leeds United haven’t come to anything although they certainly worked hard in this match, going from 2-0 to 2-2, only for Carlisle to snatch a winner in extra time. Richard Duffy played for Exeter but Rob Edwards is still out with a facial injury and Stuart Fleetwood didn’t even make the bench – instead he played in Exeter Reserves’ 3-1 defeat to Swansea City Reserves the following day. Andy Marriott was the substitute goalkeeper.
Millwall 2-0 Southend United
Millwall’s win took them into the play-off places and my dad is almost convinced that Millwall won’t get relegated. As usual, there was no substitute appearance for Jason Price although if Kenny Jackett had felt the need to make even one substitution, maybe Jason would have been the first to come on. I don’t really think so though.

Championship Results 26th January Part 2
Peterborough United 0-1 Preston North End
This was the Championship’s equivalent of Bolton v Burnley with Darren Ferguson in the role of the Championship’s Owen Coyle. And it ended exactly the sane way – a 1-0 victory with the manager’s new club beating his old club.
Craig Morgan missed this game due to suspension, as did Peterborough’s other first-choice centre back. Preston’s Paul Parry is likely to be missing for a while with his knee injury. It’s hard to imagine Peterborough to survive the drop and it probably won’t be much comfort that just getting up there in the first place was a great achievement and they do have one of the best English goalkeepers in the football league.
Plymouth 1-0 Derby County
Carl Fletcher captained a Plymouth side who are at least having a pretty good go at survival. Carl should probably have scored but as it happened his goal wasn’t needed. Plymouth’s victory over Derby was very useful for them – and it was the very least thing Robbie Savage’s Derby needed.
Sheffield United 3-0 Reading
Ched Evans played the first 79 minutes for Sheffield United but goals continue to elude him. But at least he was on the winning side, unlike Reading’s Simon Church, who stayed on the bench as Sheffield United proved considerably tougher than Liverpool.
Swansea City 0-0 Coventry City
Ashley Williams kept his place in Swansea’s starting line-up but Joe Allen and David Cotterill were dropped to the bench despite good performances against Middlesbrough at the weekend. Joe came on after half-time and gave Swansea some much-needed life but Swansea just couldn’t break the deadlock. Neither did Coventry, who had lost Freddy Eastwood to a knee injury. David Cornell was on the bench for Swansea.

Championship Results 26th January Part 1
Doncaster Rovers 1-4 Middlesbrough
Sometimes Middlesbrough do really well and you think they’ve finally turned the corner. But it never seems to be the right corner, they always have to retrace their steps and go back to where they are and then it’s ages before they find any sort of corner, right or wrong.
Doncaster’s Gareth Roberts was unlucky to face Boro on one of their good days - on another day he might have got an assist. He was also unlucky to be without John Oster and Brian Stock, who were both left out of the squad. I’m not sure why but the implication is they’re both injured although maybe Brian just needed a rest after playing several games close together.
Danny Coyne kept his place in the Boro goal and one of his saves in particular was spectacular. He also seems to be a favourite with the fans, who gave him a lot of support. Rhys Williams has a pelvic injury so he didn’t feature. Even without him, it proved to be one of Boro’s really good days which make you question what they’re doing down in mid-table.
Nottingham Forest 5-0 Queen’s Park Rangers
Robert Earnshaw scored twice in three minutes then won the penalty that led to the third as Forest proved they are more than serious about this automatic promotion business. Chris Gunter got himself another clean sheet and all those people who said it would be another relegation battle for Forest are probably feeling a bit silly now. (But for the record, I thought they would struggle too.) Forest are now unbeaten in 19 league games.

Premier League Results 26th January
Bolton 1-0 Burnley
Sam Ricketts again played the whole match (and kept a clean sheet) as Bolton got a valuable win and Burnley’s poor away form continued. It’s safe to say that Burnley fans weren’t happy to see their ex-manager Owen Coyle, who dumped them for Bolton.
Portsmouth 1-1 West Ham United
Neither side managed to get the win they needed – far from getting the fabled six points, they had to settle for one apiece. Portsmouth’s goalkeeper was in good form and saved shots from a few West Ham players including an excellent stop to keep out Jack Collison. Danny Gabbidon wasn’t ready to return from his hamstring injury.
Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Fulham
Gareth Bale even better than he usually does as he finally managed his first ever Premier League win in a game he’d started. The trouble with being a defender is that while you might do your job perfectly and get a clean sheet, you can’t always rely on the forwards to score for you. On this occasion, Peter Crouch was the forward to oblige and it was Gareth who won the free kick from which David Bentley scored.
Simon Davies was a 64th minute substitute. I am glad he was only a substitute for two reasons. Firstly, I think he must have been rushed back a bit too quickly the last two times he attempted to make his comeback. Secondly because he looked like the only Fulham player interested in getting something from this game and one of his shots in particular was a serious threat to Gareth’s clean sheet.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Liverpool
Wolves did very well to hold Liverpool to a draw – while Liverpool showed that their crisis is not quite over after all. And it wasn’t just a defensive effort from Wolves – they did have a good go at winning it. Unfortunately for Wales fans, Wayne Hennessey and Sam Vokes were back on the bench and didn’t get to play any part in this game. Dave Edwards is still out with an ankle injury.

Carling Cup Fixture 27th January
Manchester United v Manchester City (second leg)
Manchester City won the first leg 2-1 but Manchester United have the advantage that they’ve already scored an away goal. Craig Bellamy was rested for most of City’s last game so he’s likely tp feature, particularly if the news about Robinho going on loan is true. Jamie Redknapp says Craig has been Manchester City’s best operator this season while the sport.co.uk blog thinks he has the seventh worst tattoo in football (Robbie Savage is tenth).
Ryan Giggs has had an even longer rest than Craig but he doesn’t seem to be injured so I’m guessing he’s being saved for this match. Adrian Morley says his greatest inspirations are Ryan Giggs and God. It actually wouldn’t surprise me to learn they’re the same person.

League Two Fixture 27th January
Burton Albion v Lincoln City
Burton still seem to be having a defender crisis so Tony James should play – unless, of course, he is now one of their defending doubts. He has been one of Burton’s better players this season so fans will be hoping he’s healthy.

Premier League Fixtures 27th January
Aston Villa v Arsenal
James Collins looks likely to keep his place in Villa’s defence as he’s been playing well and they have at least one injured defender. Aaron Ramsey came on as a substitute in Arsenal’s last game so presumably his thigh is better and he might even start.
Blackburn Rovers v Wigan Athletic
Jason Brown will probably be on the bench for Blackburn but Jason Koumas might not even be on the bench.

League One Result 25th January
Charlton Athletic 0-1 Leyton Orient
Charlton missed the chance to go level with Leeds and Norwich when they lost to Leyton Orient. Charlton’s Grant Basey was awarded a yellow card for his challenge on Orient’s Nicky Adams, on loan from Leicester. Nicky had a great game – he provided the assist for the first goal and was very unlucky not to be on the scoresheet himself.

League Two Fixtures 26th January
Chesterfield v Rotherham United
After some varied results, including an embarrassing lost to Darlington, Rotherham will be wanting to consolidate their place in the promotion picture. But so do Chesterfield, whose side includes Robert Page and (if he plays) Mark Crossley.
Dagenham & Redbridge v Notts County
Tony Roberts will be desperate to help Dagenham get back into the promotion picture but Notts County always score a lot of goals and goals from the opposition are something Tony has struggled with this season. Although I still think he’s brilliant.
Darlington v Northampton Town
Darlington need a miracle to save them from relegation. Lots of miracles in fact. But a win over Peter Gilbert’s Northampton would be a start.
Macclesfield Town v Morecambe
Darren Moss could be on the bench again as Morecambe play the League Two side closest to them – alphabetically, that is.
Rochdale v Port Vale
Craig Davies and Lewis Haldane looked good playing together when Port Vale took on Macclesfield but they didn’t actually score any goals. And you can’t win at any level if you don’t score. Gareth Owen should also play for Vale.

League One Fixtures 26th January Part 2
Stockport County v Brighton & Hove Albion
Stockport’s draw against Carlisle gave them their first point for ages and I’m sure Owain fon Williams would love another clean sheet against Andrew Crofts’ Brighton.
Tranmere Rovers v Yeovil Town
Ash Taylor’s Tranmere hope to bounce back after their defeat to Milton Keynes Dons but Yeovil have just beaten the team who beat the team who knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup. If football were like boxing Yeovil could be League Champions right now. And Nathan Jones and Shaun MacDonald only strengthen the side.
Walsall v Norwich City
Walsall have got a bit out of the habit of playing football matches every week but they aren’t a bad side and Mark Bradley and Rhys Weston (now fit after a calf injury) will be looking to prove it. Owain Tudur Jones is fit and ready for a place in the team but Norwich’s having got to the top of the league without him probably doesn’t help his case.

League One Fixtures 26th January Part 1
Brentford v Southampton
Lewis Price will probably be on the bench as Brentford take on FA Cup giant-killers Southampton. Lloyd James has been subbed off in his last two league appearances but in some ways it’s just great to see him starting.
Colchester United v Milton Keynes Dons
Lee Beevers probably won’t be back in Colchester’s squad but they do have new loan signing Christian Ribeiro in defence. Jermaine Easter was substituted in his last three appearances so I wonder if a role on the bench is on the cards.
Exeter City v Carlisle
Exeter must be disappointed with the defeat to Yeovil which followed their shock win over Leeds but Carlisle offers a chance for them to bounce back. However they have a bit of a problem in defence. They still have Richard Duffy unless he has picked up some injury I don’t know about. Rob Edwards did very well in his last game but is not expected to return from a facial injury in time to face Carlisle. Andy Marriott and Stuart Fleetwood are both good players but they’re not defenders. But if you can beat the team who knocked out Manchester United, surviving a defensive crisis can’t be impossible.
Millwall v Southend United
In my report of Millwall’s last game, I speculated about the possibility of Kenny Jackett getting himself a new striker. Well he’s done it. It is nice to get things right occasionally but it’s not great news for Jason Price.

Championship Fixtures 26th January Part 3
Sheffield United v Reading
Reading’s Simon Church has a bet with a team-mate about which of them will score the most goals. If he had made the bet with Wales team-mate Ched Evans, now at Sheffield United, instead, he’d probably be out of sight by now. But maybe this match will be the start of a great scoring run for Ched. I wouldn’t write him off yet.
Swansea City v Coventry City
Joe Allen thinks Swansea will beat Coventry and the way he and David Cotterill have been playing, I would expect them both to be in the starting line-up. But when manager Paolo Sousa surprisingly dropped Ashley Williams from the starting line-up, he showed he is not afraid to make potentially controversial decisions.
Freddy Eastwood will be hoping to continue his scoring run for Coventry.

Championship Fixtures 26th January Part 2
Doncaster Rovers v Middlesbrough
Brian Stock seemed fine after completing his first 90 minutes for Doncaster since returning from injury but tomorrow’s game could come a bit soon. Gareth Roberts and John Oster should play after making good contributions, despite being on the leading side.
I hope Danny Coyne will keep his place in goal as he has mostly done better than Brad Jones but Rhys Williams probably won’t be recovered from his pelvic injury.
Ipswich Town v West Bromwich Albion
Ben Thatcher is rumoured to be not far off returning from injury but another rumour states Roy Keane won’t let him near the first team no matter what. So it’s hard to know what’s going to happen.
Peterborough United v Preston North End
Darren Ferguson’s old side takes on his new side – although at least he was actually sacked rather than just leaving them which should help. Peterborough’s Craig Morgan will serve the second match of his three-match suspension and Preston are still without the injured Paul Parry.
Nottingham Forest v Queen’s Park Rangers
Robert Earnshaw used his Twitter account to congratulate Villa’s James Collins on reaching the FA Cup final – actually it’s the Carling Cup Final, Rob. But a sweet tweet nevertheless. Who knows, maybe Darren Bent’s Sunderland rant was about something else entirely, like where Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was going to take him on their next dirty weekend away.
I don’t know how knowledgeable Chris Gunter is about what other teams are up to but he’s certainly clued up when it comes to his own club. He says automatic promotion is a definite possibility for Forest and I can only agree.
Plymouth Argyle v Derby County
Robbie Savage has a novel way of helping his team-mates to improve their strike rates – taking shots at him first! It worked too. But it can work two ways. Maybe Plymouth captain Carl Fletcher can get his team scoring own goals off Robbie’s face.

Championship Fixtures 26th January Part 1
Barnsley v Leicester City
Andy King was rested for their FA Cup match against Cardiff City but they might need him as both teams try to get back to winning ways.
Bristol City v Cardiff City
These two tams must be sick of the sight of each other but after Cardiff finally won the FA Cup tie, Bristol City will be out for revenge. Lewin Nyatanga and Gavin Williams are likely to be in the squad somewhere – and I think Gavin should start as he did well in his last appearance for them – but Christian Ribeiro has gone on-loan to Colchester United and James Wilson isn’t a squad regular.
This will be Joe Ledley’s last game before having the first of his hip operations on Friday but thinks he could be back before the end of the season. Groin and back injuries meant that Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig missed the weekend win over Leicester but Darcy Blake deserves another start after an excellent performance and it would be nice to see Jonathan Meades or maybe a different young Welsh Cardiff player on the bench.

Premier League Fixtures 26th January
Bolton Wanderers v Burnley
Bolton have a number of injury doubts but that should only increase Sam Ricketts’ chance of starting to get a win against a side who only have one point from away fixtures this season.
Portsmouth v West Ham United
If either side wants to escape relegation, they should be able to beat each other. Unfortunately they can’t both do it. But West Ham are the ones with Jack Collison in their team – he’s gone a bit quiet on the goalscoring front but continues to play well. Danny Gabbidon is a doubt so his hamstring must be a lot better and if he’s not back for tomorrow, he can’t be too far off.
Tottenham Hotspur v Fulham
Fulham are another team who have been known to struggle away - or at least they do when they’re not playing Manchester United. So this could be the day Gareth Bale finally gets his first win from a game he started. He certainly deserves it after some excellent performances recently but the bad news is Benoit Assou-Ekotto could have recovered from injury by tomorrow.
Simon Davies made what I believe was his third injury comeback in Fulham’s FA Cup match at the weekend. He might not be ready for a start just yet but it would be lovely to see him making another substitute appearance.
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Liverpool
I expect Wayne Hennessey and Sam Vokes will drop to the bench again after playing 90 minutes for Wolves in the FA Cup. Dave Edwards is now expected to be out for another two months but maybe topleague got it wrong.

Charlton Athletic v Leyton Orient
Grant Basey will probably be in defence as Charlton aim to put pressure on Norwich and Leeds. He will be up against Orient’s loan signing, Nicky Adams from Leicester City.

League Two Results 23rd January Part 2
Northampton Town 0-0 Chesterfield
Peter Gilbert came closest to giving Northampton the lead but at least he kept a clean sheet which is really more his job as he’s a defender. And Northampton are now unbeaten in seven matches. It’s not much in comparison with Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest but I think it’s still pretty good.
Robert Page played the full game for Chesterfield and Mark Crossley was on the bench.
Port Vale 0-0 Macclesfield Town
Man of the Match Craig Davies had a great first full game for Port Vale and was very unlucky not to score. Lewis Haldane possibly should have won them a penalty and Gareth Owen helped keep the clean sheet.
Shrewsbury Town 2-1 Dagenham & Redbridge
Will Richards was left out of Shrewsbury’s team so perhaps he was injured. Tony Roberts did his best to get Dagenham a point at least. He not only tried to keep goals out, he helped out in attack too.

League Two Results 23rd January Part 1
Aldershot Town 2-1 Bournemouth
Joe Partington was left out of the squad entirely which was a worry as he usually makes the bench even when he’s not fully fit.
Bury 1-0 Hereford United
Hereford were missing the injured Ryan Green but his fellow defenders Ryan Valentine and Darren Jones did at least only let in one goal.
Cheltenham Town 1-4 Rochdale
Strange it sounds, Rochdale are getting promoted. Cheltenham will be disappointed but not many teams will beat Rochdale this season. Next season could well be a different matter but next season they won’t be in the same division as Cheltenham. But Cheltenham might not have got their goal if Josh Low hadn’t made the initial shot. David Pipe seems to have impressed at Cheltenham as well as there are rumours that he’ll have his loan from Bristol Rovers extended.
Lincoln City 2-1 Bradford City
Michael Flynn played the full match as his side lose 2-1 to Lincoln.
Morecambe 2-1 Barnet
Darren Moss stayed on the bench as Morecambe edged closer to the play-offs.

League One Results 23rd January Part 2
Norwich City 1-0 Brentford
Not too long ago, Leeds United looked uncatchable. Now, Norwich have overtaken them. Despite having ten men for most of the match. They’re only on goal difference and Leeds do have two games in hand but it shows how far Norwich have come since being beaten 7-1 by Colchester (stealing Colchester’s manager helped). There was no place in Norwich’s side for Owain Tudur Jones though and Lewis Price had to make do with a place on Brentford’s bench.
Oldham Athletic 0-1 Millwall
Millwall’s goal was a penalty scored in controversial circumstances but it still counted. But you can’t blame Oldham defender Joe Jacobson who could almost be said to have kept a clean sheet. Millwall’s Jason Price came on in the 83rd minute to replace substitute Lewis Grabban, who himself replaced Neil Harris two minutes after the goal. Did he injure himself celebrating? The last thing Millwall need is another striker crisis although it would give Kenny Jackett a good excuse to add to his growing collection.
Yeovil Town 2-1 Exeter City
Yeovil defender Nathan Jones and on-loan midfielder Shaun MacDonald played the full game as Yeovil beat struggling Exeter. Exeter played Richard Duffy in defence but Rob Edwards was still absent after losing his teeth and Stuart Fleetwood didn’t come on until the 81st minute. Goalkeeper Andy Marriott was also on the bench.

League One Results 23rd January Part 1
Bristol Rovers 2-0 Hartlepool United
Byron Anthony got another start as Bristol Rovers beat Hartlepool. Ben Swallow was a late substitute.
Carlisle United 0-0 Stockport County
Stockport got their first point for ages away at Carlisle. And as it was a 0-0 draw it meant a clean sheet for Owain fon Williams. And it wouldn’t have been a clean sheet without Owain’s brilliant save in the closing stages.
Gillingham 0-0 Colchester United
Christian Ribeiro has gone on loan for the second time this season – before Christmas he was at Stockport but this time he’s at the right end of League One with Colchester. And he got a clean sheet! Not bad considering he only met his team-mates yesterday. Lee Beevers didn’t play but he can’t be far off returning.
Milton Keynes Dons 1-0 Tranmere Rovers
Jermaine Easter played the first 59 minutes as MK Dons beat Tranmere but he didn’t score the goal. Ash Taylor played the full game for Tranmere.

Championship Results 23rd January
Blackpool 3-2 Watford
With Blackpool 2-1 down in the 88th minute, things weren’t looking pretty for Iain Holloway. Neal Eardley’s assist had helped put Blackpool ahead in the 17th minute but that seemed like a very long time ago now. David Vaughan was given a chance to redeem himself after a disappointing performance in his last match whilst Daniel Nardiello and Rob Edwards were on the bench. Neal and David came close to scoring but it just wouldn’t go in.
Then Ian Holloway decided to bring Daniel on. Within a minute, Blackpool were level and within three minutes, Daniel’s assist allowed Brett Ormerod to grab a winner.
Middlesbrough 1-1 Swansea City
I’m not sure of the exact statistics of this match because the BBC Sport page wasn’t working then and still isn’t working now. I also couldn’t get BBC Cymru to work. But anyway, Danny Coyne was in goal for Middlesbrough but Rhys Williams didn’t play because he was out with a pelvic injury and even if it were possible to score from the treatment room you can’t do it with a dodgy pelvis.
Ashley Williams was back in the starting line-up for Swansea alongside Joe Allen and David Cotterill. Ashley’s clearances helped to ensure Boro didn’t grab a winner while Joe provided the assist for Swansea’s goal. David came close many times to getting a goal for himself but Danny just kept on saving his shots. David Cornell was on the bench.
Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Peterborough United
This was really quite a good result for Peterborough when you consider they had not one but two centre backs suspended, including Craig Morgan. But I can’t really blame Peterborough fans for not finding this consoling.

Premier League Result 23rd January
Manchester United 4-0 Hull City
Ryan Giggs was missing again as Manchester United took on Boaz Myhill, who was world-class in his last game. He did actually make some very good saves – as he usually does – but he was up against Wayne Rooney, who can be world-class himself on occasion. And on this occasion, he certainly was, as he scored all four goals. (It’s happening so often, we need a special word for it. We’ve got hat-trick so maybe four goals could be a coat-trick or something and if you get five it’s a boot-trick because it would be unless you scored all five with your head.)

FA Cup Results 23rd January Part 2
Derby County 1-0 Doncaster Rovers
Robbie Savage set up the only goal as Derby knocked the technically high-flying Doncaster out of the Cup. High-flying Doncaster? Mad. Brian Stock completed his first full match since returning from injury – and came close to scoring. Gareth Roberts could have got an assist if his team-mates had responded to his cross quicker and John Oster could have scored if he hadn’t generously decided to pass and let someone else score. Gareth and John were also on the pitch the whole time although John perhaps wished he was somewhere else when Robbie dispossessed him and Derby went on to score.
Notts County 2-2 Wigan Athletic
Jason Koumas was again left out of the squad and Wigan suffered, going 2-0 down before they finally managed to get two goals and force a replay. I like to think it’s not a coincidence that they struggled without Jason but unfortunately it probably is. If you don’t want him Wigan, just sell him to Cardiff. They need someone who can replace Joe Ledley and Jason needs a club who appreciates him.
Well done Notts County!
Preston North End 0-2 Chelsea
Not a surprise really. Preston’s Paul Parry is injured after all and Chelsea are, well they’re not the worst team in the world. But at least Darren Ferguson got further in the Cup than his dad did. But while Paul might not have played, every Hereford United fan bar one voted him into the Team of the Decade.
Reading 1-0 Burnley
Reading have done it again. Knocking Burnley out isn’t as impressive as knocking Liverpool out but two giant-killings in a row is not something every team can achieve. Simon Church played the first 64 minutes and caused a lot of trouble for Burnley, coming close to opening the scoring as Reading again proved to be the stuff of Premier League teams’ nightmares.
Southampton 2-1 Ipswich Town
As Ipswich are still near the bottom of the Championship and Southampton would be near the top of League One if they weren’t so naughty, this certainly wasn’t as big a surprise as some of the other giant-killings. But it’s a giant-killing nevertheless and although Lloyd James did concede a free kick in a dangerous area, it didn’t prove costly and League One will be represented in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Leeds United
Why do people announce the Man of the Match when the game is still going on? What’s the point of that? It’s Man of the Match, not Man of the First Seventy Minutes of the Match or whenever it was they announced it.
Not that I’m saying Gareth Bale didn’t deserve to be Man of the Match. He was brilliant both in defence and attack, he had a big role to play in both the moves that led to Tottenham’s goals and I’m sure at least one of his free kicks would have gone in if the goalkeeper hadn’t happened to be in the right place at the right time. He nearly scored too. I don’t know why Robbie Keane had such a go at him though, Robbie knows all about nearly scoring so he should have had more sympathy.
But as soon as you say someone’s doing really well, you jinx it don’t you? And Gareth’s had quite enough to do with jinxes already. Announce Man of the Match at the end instead, it won’t take a minute.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-2 Crystal Palace
This isn’t the worst result in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. Oh no. But it was a bit of a shame. Palace have been going really well lately but it’s just typical that when Wayne Hennessey finally gets a game in goal and Sam Vokes is getting his first start of the season, they go and let in two goals from a Championship side. But Neville Southall thinks Wayne will get back into Wolves’ side and becomes one of the best goalkeepers in the world - and he should know – and even Mick McCarthy said Sam was excellent. Wayne and Sam – just pretend Crystal Palace are Scotland and you should do fine. And maybe you’ll have Dave Edwards to help you by then.

FA Cup Results 23rd January Part 1
Accrington Stanley 1-3 Fulham
Simon Davies came off the bench for the last six minutes (plus stoppage time) to share in Fulham’s victory over a scarily good Accrington Stanley. I’m a bit worried though because there’s a preview for Fulham’s next game that says Fulham are hoping Simon will have recovered from his injury by then. I hope it’s just a mistake and he hasn’t made another relapse. That would be so unfair.
Aston Villa 3-2 Brighton & Hove Albion
James Collins played in central defence again as Aston Villa played Brighton. He did get a yellow card but who doesn’t get those these days? Andrew Crofts captained a Brighton side that just didn’t want to give up.
Bolton Wanderers 2-0 Sheffield United
Sam Ricketts was back in the starting line-up for the first time since for ever and not only did he not score any own goals (told you) he also managed to keep a clean sheet. Some would say Sheffield United aren’t much of a test of Sam’s abilities but no doubt Manchester United and Liverpool thought the same of Leeds and Reading. Ched Evans came on as a substitute for Sheffield United which is annoying in a way but if he’d started, Sam might not have got a clean sheet.
Cardiff City 4-2 Leicester City
I don’t mind telling you, I was a bit worried. Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig were out injured. Joe Ledley wasn’t out injured but I was kind of wondering if he’s make it through the match. When it was 2-2 at 90 minutes I couldn’t even feel happy about the replay. Cardiff don’t need any extra games.
But there was nothing to worry about. Joe survived, set up Cardiff’s first goal (and scored one of his own although it was disallowed). Darcy Blake did just fine in both midfield and defence and Jonathan Meades was on hand to fill up the bench. And Cardiff scored two goals in stoppage time. So they’re through to face… Chelsea in the next round. Oh shit.
Andy King was surprisingly left on the bench for Leicester. But I didn’t really mind too much. They were playing Cardiff.

FA Cup Fixtures 24th January
Scunthorpe United v Manchester City
Scunthorpe are one of those teams who raise their game for the big teams. But Craig Bellamy and his Manchester City team-mates will probably be too much for S****horpe.
Stoke City v Arsenal
Ryan Shawcross will play for Stoke and he’ll give Arsenal a few scares but Danny Collins could be on the bench again. Aaron Ramsey is still injured but as this is a Cup game there could be a place for Sanchez Watt.

Welsh Non-Keague/Reserves news
Aaron Morris, on loan from Cardiff City, was in Newport County’s team as they drew 0-0 with Blue Square Premier side York City in the FA Trophy. Kevin Gall and Danny Parslow were in York’s team. The replay is on Tuesday.
Troy Brown played for Ipswich Town’s reserve side as they drew 1-1 with Southend United reserves.
Ben Thatcher played 45 minutes for Ipswich and Roy Keane says he is progressing well as he recovers from a knee ligament injury.
Swansea City’s reserves lost 2-1 to Llanelli. Their side included David Cornell (goalkeeper), Daniel Alfei, Kristian O’Leary, Daniel Sheehan, Matty Collins (captain), Scott Evans and Chad Bond. Rhys Wilson (goalkeeper), Casey Thomas, Lee Lucas and Joe Walsh were among those on the substitutes’ bench.

FA Cup Fixtures 22nd January Part 2
Preston North End v Chelsea
Manchester United are out, Liverpool are out and I’m an Arsenal supporter so I hope you’ll forgive me for wishing a similar victory for Preston. Paul Parry is still out with a knee injury and as Chelsea’s Rhys Taylor is probably at least their fourth-choice keeper, I doubt he’ll even be on the bench.
Reading v Burnley
Not many people would say Burnley are better than Liverpool. In fact, probably even the most loyal Burnley fan would hesitate to make such a pronouncement. So why shouldn’t Reading beat Burnley too? Simon Church to get the winning goal. If not all the goals.
Southampton v Ipswich Town
Lloyd James will probably play in midfield but Anthony Pulis hasn’t got near the starting line-up since returning from his loan at Lincoln City.
Tottenham Hotspur v Leeds United
Gareth Bale has never had a problem winning FA Cup games. In fact, I think all the Cup games he’s lost have been against Manchester United who are after all pretty good. Leeds should not present a problem… but then Leeds are better than Manchester United, aren’t they? Oh dear.
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Crystal Palace
Wayne Hennessey might get another chance to start (it’s his birthday on Sunday so let him start. Sam Vokes has attracted the attention of Swansea City but I think Mick McCarthy would probably rather keep him as a supersub. (Well he’s a sub and he’s super so he must be a supersub.) There is mixed news on Dave Edwards. Either he’s still suffering from his ankle injury or he’s recovered or he’s recovered but had a reaction. But his chances of playing probably aren’t very high whichever is true.

FA Cup Fixtures 22nd January Part 1
Accrington Stanley v Fulham
Simon Davies is in Fulham’s squad after recovering from a foot injury. I just hope he stays recovered this time, Wales and Fulham have missed him.
Aston Villa v Brighton & Hove Albion
After several successive (successful) starts, James Collins could be rested but they’re a bit short in the centre back position so I think he’ll play. Brighton captain Andrew Crofts should play too.
Bolton Wanderers v Sheffield United
Bolton have a couple of injuries but as far as I know none of them are defenders so Sam Ricketts might be on the bench again. But he did nothing wrong when he came on in the 93rd minute against Arsenal in midweek so maybe I will let myself hope. Sam had better watch out for Sheffield United’s Ched Evans though. Ched will probably be as desperate for a goal as Sam will be for a start.
Cardiff City v Leicester City
Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig are struggling with groin and back injuries respectively and Aaron in particular looks unlikely to be fit for this match. Joe Ledley is presumably also struggling with his hip operation imminent but he probably needs to play if Cardiff are planning on starting with eleven players (okay maybe I’m exaggerating just a little bit). He is coming around to the idea of a new contract though so it’s not all bad. And I don’t think Darcy Blake has any injuries anywhere.
Andy King hasn’t scored for a while for Leicester… so he’s probably due a goal.
Derby County v Doncaster Rovers
Robbie Savage is apparently fit to play despite an incident at an Aston Villa match involving Stiliyan Petrov, a football and Robbie’s headphones. Btw you should read Robbie’s columns in the Mirror (online I mean, I would never tell anyone to buy the Mirror). They’re hilarious and I’m very jealous.
http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opinion/columnists/robbie-savage/
Newly-fit captain Brian Stock have a good chance of starting but Brian certainly might be rested because he has only just come back from injury and there’s a Championship game on Tuesday. Gareth Roberts and John Oster are more likely to start but they must need the occasional rest too. John still hasn’t signed his contract because his agent hasn’t been around but he seems happy to stay at Doncaster, even though the manager does weird things like asking for his opinion.
Notts County v Wigan Athletic
Jason Koumas would probably welcome the chance to get a game for Wigan but he wasn’t even on the bench last time and it seems as though Wigan are taking this match so seriously, they’re even prepared to play their injured players. Cardiff have showed an interest in Jason, who has played for them before but his wage demands are a bit high and he’d rather stay in the Premier League. I’d rather you did too, Jason, but most of all I want to see you playing! And if you can un-retire yourself and get back into the Wales picture, even better.

League Two Fixtures 22nd January Part 2
Port Vale v Macclesfield Town
New loan signing Craig Davies will be hoping to make his second Port Vale appearance but it might well be from the bench again. New loan singing Lewis Haldane is more likely to start but he is in his second loan spell with the club and he's even been training with them since his last loan spell ended so he's not strictly new. Gareth Owen will play in defence.
Shrewsbury Town v Dagenham & Redbridge
Will Richards should be somewhere in Shrewsbury squad but probably just the bench. Goalkeeper Tony Roberts will be hoping to help Dagenham to another win.
Torquay United v Burton Albion
Burton have 11 players unavailable but I don’t think Tony James is one of them.

League Two Fixtures 22nd January Part 1
Aldershot Town v Bournemouth
Joe Partington was on the losing side when he played for Bournemouth’s reserves against Exeter City’s reserves. He is now an injury doubt for this match – as he was for the match last week. Bournemouth have a very small squad though, they can’t usually fill their substitutes’ bench so they probably don’t have much choice but to play him in reserve matches and at least put him on the bench for the game against Aldershot.
Bury v Hereford United
Ryan Green is out after having a hernia operation but Hereford still have Ryan Valentine and Darren Jones, a centre back who came close to scoring in his last match.
Cheltenham Town v Rochdale
Rochdale are top of the league. Cheltenham kind of aren’t. So this probably won’t be an easy game for Josh Low and David Pipe. David is on loan from Bristol Rovers but Cheltenham boss Mark Yates wants to keep him until the end of the season.
Lincoln City v Bradford City
Michael Flynn should be in Bradford’s squad but only if the game actually goes ahead this time.
Morecambe v Barnet
Darren Moss is fit to play for the home side as far as I know.
Northampton Town v Chesterfield
It’s all very confusing but Northanpton and Chesterfield actually have two matches scheduled for today. Northampton was going to play Accrington Stanley and Chesterfield were going to play Notts County but as Accrington and Notts County are both playing FA Cup Fourth Round ties this weekend, Northampton and Chesterfield must have decided to play each other instead – the original fixture was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
But anyway Peter Gilbert will probably play in defence for Northampton and Robert Page definitely won’t play in defence for Northampton for the simple reason that he is a Chesterfield player. But he should overcome a slight injury problem to play for Chesterfield, unlike Mark Crossley who is probably more likely to be on the bench. Confused? That’s how I felt when I saw the ficture list.
Northampton Town OFF Accrington Stanley
As Accrington are plaiying Fulham in the FA Cup, this match had to be postponed.
Northampton will be playing Chesterfield at home instead.
Notts County OFF Chesterfield
As Notts County are playing Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup, this match had to be postponed.
Chesterfield will be playing away at Northampton instead.

League One Fixtures 22nd January Part 2
Norwich City v Brentford
Owain Tudur Jones is considering a short-term loan move to help him get some playing time. He has been out for a while with a groin injury and feels he has little chance of breaking into the team anytime soon. I still don’t know about Rhoys Wiggins. Brentford’s Lewis Price will probably be on the bench.
Oldham Athletic v Millwall
Oldham have a number of injury problems but Joe Jacobson is fit. Millwall’s Jason Price is fit too but I still don’t think Kenny Jackett will play him. Well you can’t say Kenny is biased in favour of Welsh players (unlike some people around here).
Yeovil Town v Exeter City
Shaun MacDonald is back with Yeovil on loan and is very likely to play. He played in some match against Leyton Orient which I didn’t know about but he did well, coming close to a goal. Rob Edwards played brilliantly for Exeter last week but then he lost two teeth and had to come off. But after such a good performance, I’m sure he has a chance of playing alongside Richard Duffy – who apparently won every single tackle in his last match.
Andy Marriott and Stuart Fleetwood both played as Exeter's reserve side beat Bournemouth 3-1 with Stuart scoring the second goal and Andy letting in a penalty (which happens to most goalkeepers most of the time unless you're Thomas Sorensen).
League One Fixtures 22nd January Part 1
Bristol Rovers v Hartlepool United
Byron Anthony finally got to start Bristol Rovers’ last match which I think I forgot to post about but anyway he did a good job, without his tackle the score might easily not have been 0-0. Ben Swallow was on back the bench for his last game after the player he replaced returned from suspension. Unfortunately that sort of thing happens quite often. But maybe someone else will get suspended, you never know.
Carlisle United v Stockport County
Stockport have lost their last 12 games – not even goalkeeper Owain fon Williams has been able to help them although he is a good goalkeeper who is attracting the attention of better clubs than Stockport. Leeds United and Ipswich Town, to be exact.
Gillingham v Colchester United
Lee Beevers is back in traiing for Colchester but he’s probably not ready to be in the squad.
Milton Keynes Dons v Tranmere Rovers
Jermaine Easter, one of the League One’s top scorers, has attracted the attention of Charlton Athletic
Tranmere have bought a new centre back but there will probably still be a place for the excellent Ash Taylor in midfield. Well, I’d play him.

Championship Fixtures 23rd January
Blackpool v Watford
A number of players are pushing for recalls and Blackpool have played a lot lately so Neal Eardley, David Vaughan and Daniel Nardiello won’t necessary stay in the starting line-up. On the other hand, one of them could be replaced by Rob Edwards.
Middlesbrough v Swansea City
Danny Coyne will hopefully keep his place in the Middlesbrough goal but Rhys Williams hasn’t recovered from a knock in training or a pelvic injury, whichever report is true. Ashley Williams was disappointed to be left on Swansea’s bench for the last match but is trying his hardest to get back into the team. David Cotterill and Joe Allen are likely to start again, with substitute keeper David Cornell on the bench.
Sheffield Wednesday v Peterborough United
Craig Morgan won’t feature for Peterborough after being shown a red card in the last match.
Postponed Match
Plymouth Argyle P-P Barnsley
Plymouth have a waterlogged pitch so no game for their Welsh captain Carl Fletcher.

Premier League Fixture 23rd January
Manchester United v Hull City
Ryan Giggs seems to be fit now so he could play at least some part of the match. But you won’t find him on Twitter anymore. Sir Alex Ferguson has banned his players from having accounts even though if there’s one player you can trust to behave himself online, it’s probably Ryan Giggs. One view Ryan has expressed recently is that Manchester United don’t miss Carlos Tevez. I have to agree they probably don’t. I do think he would have been useful to them this season but can you really miss a player who was little more than a benchwarmer?
Probably just about everyone who isn't a Manchester United supporter will be hopinh Boaz Myhill can match his brilliant performance for Hull against Tottenham.

Championship Result 19th January
Blackpool 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday
Neal Eardley, David Vaughan and Daniel Nardiello all started for Blackpool with Rob Edwards on the bench (he stayed there though) so this match could have been a Wales fan’s dream, or at least this Wales fan’s dream. Unfortunately this Wales fan’s dream involves all the Wales players being on the winning side and that’s not quite how it worked out.
Actually, I need to make a correction. According to Blackpool manager Ian Holloway, David Vaughan did not appear in this match, it was David's evil twin. "I think David Vaughan needed to be told because that wasn't him tonight," were Ollie's exact words. Daniel came closest to getting Blackpool a point but Neal seemed to struggle a little bit in defence. But everyone's allowed the off-day, I have 365 of them every year.
Still, it was a great result for Sheffield Wednesday – despite their Welshmanless state I can’t say I want them to get relegated.

Premier League Results 20th January
Arsenal 4-2 Bolton Wanderers
Arsenal came from 2-0 down to beat Bolton Wanderers. Aaron Ramsey was just one of the players on their injury list but that didn’t stop them from claiming all three points. Sam Ricketts made his first appearance for Bolton for quite some time – he came off the bench after 94 minutes. Which isn’t all that much better than not coming on at all.
Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur
Gareth Bale was the best player in a mostly lacklustre Tottenham side but if Tottenham were victims of a jinx, it was probably not Gareth’s. He got a booking after clashing heads whilst jumping for a ball but I agree with those who said it was a bit harsh. It wasn’t a malicious challenge and won’t the bump on his head be punishment enough? (The football coach part of me says it was a foul and the yellow card was the correct response and the Arsenal fan side of me is completely happy with how this match went but as this is a Wales blog my Wales fan side gets star billing.)

Carling Cup Result 19th January
Manchester City 2-1 Manchester United (Semi Final, First Leg)
Manchester City won the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final. Ryan Giggs put Manchester United ahead in the 16th minute but then Craig Bellamy won himself a penalty, so officially he got the assist for the penalty as he didn't take it.

FA Cup Results 19th January
Brentford 0-1 Doncaster Rovers (Third Round)
Lewis Price let in just the one goal an excellent performance that saw him make a number of saves, including one from fellow Welshman Brian Stock. But Doncaster were the winners and it was Brian who provided the assist for their goal. Brian has played two games recently following a long injury absence and he’s been surprised and encouraged by his match fitness.
John Oster, who has signed a contract extension to keep him at Doncaster until the end of the season, could have provided an assist as early as the third minute but Billy Sharp fired wide. Gareth Roberts couldn’t repeat his goalscoring exploits from his previous game but he did help Doncaster to keep a clean sheet.
Cardiff City 1-0 Bristol City (Third Round Replay)
The only goal of the game was scored by a Bristol City player but as it went in the wrong net, it’s Cardiff who progress to the next round. Joe Ledley again played for Cardiff and is likely to play two further matches before going off to have hip surgery.
Adam Matthews (groin) and Aaron Wildig (back) started for Cardiff despite knocks but Aaron was unable to play more than 32 minutes. Adam stayed on for 78 but picked up another knock in the process although he was able to continue for a while after having treatment. I hope they’ll be fit for Saturday but if they’re not fit I’d rather they didn’t risk it. Darcy Blake also made an appearance, his first of the season with Cardiff, coming off the bench after 66 minutes.
Lewin Nyatanga played the full match for Bristol City but Gavin Williams was kept on the bench despite the fact that, without him, Bristol City wouldn’t even have got as far as the replay. Christian Ribeiro was also on the bench but James Wilson was probably ineligible.
Notts Couty 2-1 Forest Green (Third Round)
Notts County showed they still have a little way to go before they’re ready to take on the Premiership But maybe it would have been a different story if Curtis McDonald and Mike Fowler had been fit although goalkeeper Tom Pass was on the bench for Forest Green after returning from a loan spell to Frome Town.

Carling Cup Fixture 20th January
Aston Villa v Blackburn Rovers (second leg)
James Collins might be rested after two great performances for Villa but I hope he isn’t. It looks like the swine flu epidemic at Blackburn is over. I wonder if Jason Brown is disappointed that Paul Robinson doesn’t seem to have caught it.

League One Fixture 20th January
Oldham Athletic v Tranmere Rovers
Oldham and Tranmere both have two games in hand over the teams immediately above them. If they win them both, they’ll be out of the relegation zone (well, as long as the teams above them haven’t played any extra games by then). But they can’t both win both games. Oldham’s Joe Jacobson and Tranmere’s Ash Taylor will be trying to make sure their team isn’t the one that loses.

Arsenal v Bolton Wanderers
Aaron Ramsey will be out for three weeks with his thigh injury but Sanchez Watt could be in the squad as long as he isn’t injured too. Bolton probably won’t pick Sam Ricketts. I’ve given up hoping now.
Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur
Gareth Bale has another go at getting his first-ever win from a Premier League start. No, forget that, let’s try again.
Gareth Bale is hoping to extend his unbeaten run with a win at struggling Liverpool. Jamie O’Hara is back from Portsmouth but he’d better not get any ideas about playing left back, that’s Gareth’s place.

Carling Cup Fixture 19th January
Manchester City v Manchester United (first leg)
Craig Bellamy might have been made to look a bit silly by Marouane Fellaini at the weekend but he has been one of their best players so I expect he’ll play. Ryan Giggs missed Manchester United’s last game due to injury and Sir Alex Ferguson says he won’t play for this match. But that doesn’t mean he won’t.

FA Cup Fixtures 19th January
Brentford v Doncaster Rovers (Third Round)
Wojciech Szczesny is ineligible so Lewis Price is likely to play in goal for Brentford – although he probably won’t be able to play against parent club Derby in the next round if Brentford win the match. Brian Stock was substituted after suffering cramp in his first game back from a long injury but he is expected to return to the starting line-up for this match. BBC Sport reports that Doncaster boss Simon O’Driscoll has denied rumours that Southampton are after Brian but Sportinglife say they’ve turned down a bid. Either way, it looks like Brian isn’t going to Southampton.
Gareth Roberts is worried that a Premier League club will come and steal Doncaster’s manager but health-wise he seems to be fine. John Oster should also play.
Brentford and Doncaster had better hope they don’t need a replay as they’re scheduled to play Derby in the fourth round on Saturday.
Cardiff City v Bristol City (Third Round Replay)
All three of Cardiff’s Welsh first-teamers are carrying injuries but Joe Ledley, Adam Matthews and Aaron Wildig could end up playing anyway as Cardiff’s team continue to suffer from illness.
Joe of course is struggling with his ongoing hip problem and this FA Cup replay could be his last appearance of the season for Cardiff – if not his last match for them altogether if he doesn’t sign a new contract. Celtic are interested in buying Joe but Stoke have had a bid rejected. Worryingly, Joe is Cardiff’s fittest central midfielder. Adam and Aaron have knocks but I’m not sure where.
Gavin Williams will hope to start for Bristol City after his brilliant goal won them a replay in the final minute of their first match. Lewin Nyatanga could play at left back again with Christian Ribeiro on the bench but I’m pretty sure James Wilson is ineligible.
Notts County v Forest Green (Third Round)
Two of the lowest-ranked teams will hope the match will actually go ahead this time and most likely with Curtis McDonald, who has recovered from a hip injury. Mike Fowler broke an ankle in pre-season so he won’t play but he’s back in training now.

League Two Fixtures 19th January
Bury v Bradford City
Michael Flynn should be in Bradford’s squad.
Hereford United v Crewe Alexandra
Ryan Green will miss this match as he is recovering from a hernia operation but Ryan Valentine and Darren Jones will be hoping to play for Hereford for the first time this year following a number of postponements.
Port Vale v Burton Albion
Craig Davies hopes to play his first game for Port Vale since joining on loan from Brighton. Fellow loanee Lewis Haldane re-joined Vale some time ago for his second loan spell of the season with the club but it will also be his first game of his particular loan spell. I haven’t heard anything to suggest Gareth Owen won’t play alongside them.
Burton are having a defensive crisis but Tony James seems to be fit.

League One Fixtures 19th January
Charlton Athletic v Hartlepool United
Grant Basey has a groin injury but is expected to play.
Huddersfield Town v Bristol Rovers
Byron Anthony again has a chance of a place in Bristol Rovers’ defence but none of his other chances ever came to anything. He should be in the squad though, along with Ben Swallow.
Leyton Orient v Yeovil Town
This should be Nicky Adams’ first game for Orient since signing on loan from Leicester. Yeovil have a Welsh loanee of their own - Shaun MacDonald is in his second spell of the season with the club but is yet to make his second debut (if such a thing is possible).
Stockport County v Swindon Town
As far as I know, Owain fon Williams hasn’t left Stockport yet.
